MADMAB'S TO DO LIST:

QUOTE
General To Do
* Synopsis
* Ability to display documentation (.jpg)
* Commercials
* Change directory browse code so it can be told to "ignore screenshots/streaming media"

Requests
* Enhanced Favorites Screen

To do for AdamX
* Finish overlays
* Setup autoconfiguration system

To do for Atarixlbox
*  Add some type of pallette selection option
*  Possibly increase pokey volume
*  Create configuration data for new "auto configuration" system
*  Add VAPI support (yeah right!)

To do for A7800x
* YAP (Yet Another Palette) to add.  This one is supposedly even more accurate.

Questions
* I thought it'd be kinda cool to modify the record/playback system so the user could "continue" a record session at any point (including the end).  What do you all think?
* With the current screenshot position "override" option is it ok for me to remove the "copy current configuration over all configurations" for screensize/position?  Or should I just leave it?
* Still need to decide directory names for Game Manuals, TV Commercials, Gamefaqs, General Text Files.

Interface Changes
* Movies!  The ability to display movie previews!
* Sound for movies can be turned on/off
* Box/Cart art can be displayed in seperate window
* Movies display over screenshots so if you want you only see screenshots when no movie exists.
* Can now stream videos and screenshots from Samba or Relax.
* Screenshots are now sorted and displayed in proper order.
* Screenshots/Box/Cart art can be named anything (as long as it has .png extension)
* In Game Options Screen can be sized and positioned now.

* New option to "Force Game Screen Size/Position". There are two configurable screensizes. (To deal with multi-core systems like MekaX and XboyAdvance). This will be useful when switching from HDTV to SDTV or vice versa. It will save the user the trouble of resizing the screens for something that is likely temporary.

* Numerous changes to menu system see above (current menu configuration layout)
* Sprites can now be named for easier manipulation.  Directory names must be of the format "0_spritename", "1_spritename", etc.  Do not use underscores for the spritename.  It is a delimiter.
* Changed "Seconds before auto-advancing Screenshot" to "Seconds Before Auto-Advancing Artwork"

Here's what I think about the menus, as they are stated here (I didn't have a chance to really look at the emu this weekend... I got too wrapped up in the Xtras again!)

I like both of the options.

Personally, I think the "Screenshot/Movie" preview settings belong exactly where they are in the 1st option.  Show Screenshots, Show Movie, Play Sound From Movie, Sizes and Positions and Transparancies for all these options, Seconds before auto-advancing artwork, and showing screenshots while scrolling all are directly related to controlling how the Game Select Screen functions and I feel that it belongs right there where you control the rest of the Game Select Menu through skin manipulation.

I also put "Browse TV Commercials" in this color under "Utilities".  If we put it here, we can scroll through any commercial in the "D:\TV Commercials" directory and watch them full screen from there.

Alternately, we can also control the ability to view the commercials within the Game Select Screen as well, like Gilles suggested.   Something along these lines:

---->---->Game Select Menu Settings
---->---->---->Screenshot/Movie Preview Settings
---->---->---->---->Show Screenshots? Yes/No
---->---->---->---->Show Movie? Yes/No
---->---->---->---->Show TV Commercial? Before Movie/After Movie/No
---->---->---->---->Play Sound From Movies/TV Commercials? Yes/No
---->---->---->---->[Screenshot/movie/boxart] Size/Position
---->---->---->---->[Screenshot/movie/boxart] Transparency
---->---->---->---->Seconds Before Auto-Advancing Artwork
---->---->---->---->Show Screenshots While Scrolling
---->---->---->Sprite Settings
---->---->---->Background Settings
---->---->---->Text Settings

With this, we can display the commercial in the same window as the video previews as well, and decide whether we would like it to display before or after the video preview if we'd like it there.

I think it's just fine to put these options here too if you'd like.  I still think that we should keep it where you have it now though as well in your first option.

Ahh ok.  Well maybe we can have it in both places and remove the "other video/skin settings" from the skin editor since I think that is what Gilles9999 found so confusing.  Also I forgot he felt that the "Other Menu Settings" should fall under the "skin editor".  Like this..

--->Skin Editor
---->---->Game Select Menu Settings
---->---->---->Screenshot/Movie Preview Settings
---->---->---->---->Show Screenshots? Yes/No
---->---->---->---->Show Movie? Yes/No
---->---->---->---->Play Sound From Movie? Yes/No
---->---->---->---->[Screenshot/movie/boxart] Size/Position

---->---->---->---->Seconds Before Auto-Advancing Artwork
---->---->---->---->Show Screenshots While Scrolling

---->---->---->Background Settings
---->---->---->Text Settings

---->---->General Settings
---->---->Main Menu Settings
---->---->Popup Menu Settings
---->---->Loading Screen Menu Settings
---->---->All 'Other' Menu Settings

If we did that and moved "other video/skin settings" underneath the "utilities->video settings" as "other video settings" as in the proposed alterations he should be happy.  Could you add the above menu into the proposed menu changes?  I forgot it in my initial post.

Thanks

I changed it.   I believe that's how you wanted it.

I'm a little confused as to what changes you/gilles are considering though.

it sounds better, and really less confusing
do you have an opinion about the commercial videos madmab?
add an option if the user want to see them or not?(before/after the in game video?)

I have not really had a chance to think about the best approach for commercial videos.  But we will definetly do them.  It's just a matter of haggling over how.  laugh.gif

Posted this last night before I left, but I guess there was an error so it didn't post...

Hey guys,

I'm off to work, but I'll get your stuff straightened out sometime tomorrow hopefully when I get back.

So madmab... you just want me to completely replace the directory structure post you had before with the stuff above?  Just want to be clear on that.

Gilles.... did you guys have a banner or something you wanted to put on the first post?   Let me know how you guys want this thread introduced and I'll put it all in the 1st post.  I gave you so many posts because I figured you'd want to use pictures and stuff when you started releasing the emulators and skins.

...... and I still think that the video preview/artwork preview stuff belongs exactly where it is since it's all part of manipulating the game select screen.   cool.gif

Later,

Perfect then  cool.gif

I'm really confused about the menu thing when we're all talking about it her I guess.  It's a shame that we don't live right down the street from each other and can't have a sit down on this.  I guess we're not expressing things as good as we could in person, or understanding their meaning.  I was under the impression that you wanted to remove those settings from that place you posted above and put them somewhere completely different.  I'm fine with those options being in the Configuration settings as well, but thought that since it's a very big part of how the game select screen is displayed it would be best if it was right where it is where you posted.

Truth be told, I still haven't really looked at where things are now in depth so maybe there not there now and you were just asking if they could be put there.  I'm a bit confused......  uhh.gif

..... that being said.... Commercial previews in the future too!

So... what were you guys thinking as a thread introduction?  You have been working very well together on this and I think that you should have a kind of team-thread where you can show off all your work in the same place and update it as new things come out.  Sorry you guys can't be in direct control of it (I did try), but I plan on being around for quite a while and would be happy to facilitate it for you.  When we get it looking good and get some content together I will make a very predominant link to this thread in the Xtras thread for all of the skins and any updates on the emus and whatever else you guys would like.

Let me know,
~Rx

oh, and DON'T use the default "settings.ini"
choose your favorite setting, rename it "settings.ini"
and replace the old settings.ini BEFORE FTP it to your xbox (if you want to use this skin with snes9xbox)

Do the skins with the named directorys actually work with older non-dual-preview x-port emu's?

Sweet man.  It will be nice when SNES9XBox gets the dynamic emu treatment down the road.  I didn't know what a good emulator it was since I always used ZSNESXBox before.  Z's still my favorite, but you can't play Star Fox II there  cool.gif

Let me know if you have a "Team Banner" or something you'd like to add to the top thread and how you guys want to present it and I'll get it done.  I will try to get your newest skins posted to the top as well Gilles.  Which ones are ready for prime-time?  Just Coleco and SNES now?

And don't worry if you want to add or change any text that I post on the threads when I get your stuff up there.  Just let me know how you want it to read and I'll fix it when I get a chance.  I would have started after work, but I didn't feel very good and I just pretty much went to sleep after I got home.

And thanks for staying focused on perfecting the Colecovision emu first madmab.  I know it's really exciting thinking about porting this stuff to the other emus now, but I'm thinking it's best to get a bulk of the work done on one emu you really like and then being able to port the changes to the other emus afterwards.

Later guys,

I've put stuff in the top threads for you guys.  Please just quote the posts and change what you'd like and PM me with it and I'll update them.  I know it's difficult doing this way and it's a shame you guys don't have total control over it, but it's the best I could come up with.  Feel completely free to let me know of any changes or updates you want.

damned, rapidshare said me, only 10 peoples will be autorized to dl the skin, so madmab, be sure to have it
someone here with a web site to host our creations? (skins, rezx Xtras etc...)??

main screen (yes a msx looks like this)

the gameselect screen (big movie big boxart, with metal gear banner, note by default it is the msx system banner; it took me 5min to set this, disable the buttons and change the banner)

Oh, and madmab, YES the skins with the named directorys actually work with older non-dual-preview x-port emu's  laugh.gif  really good, all the sprites folder of all xports emus should be named like this

Hey gilles,

I have absolutely no idea how long that megaupload keeps files unfortunatley.  I've wondered that myself.  I've got all my work (in the zips that I have provided) backed up on my hard drive and also on a 16GB thumb drive, so they're pretty safe.  What a pain it would be to have to re-upload them again though if these files were removed.  When you get to the point that your skins are complete and our work is done, I plan on packaging your stuff up in a single zipfile too so if anything ever happens to our work I have it all backed up in several places.

That's about the best a poor guy like me can do.  I can't afford a server and the ability to host all these downloads for everyone.  If anything happens to them, I will just have to re-upload the work.

I will also be releasing and hosting this stuff on torrents, but I can't say here where the sites are located since they undoubtedly have other stuff that is against forum rules.  This will be a much better option for a lot of people though, because then they can just pick and choose what Xtras they want instead of having to download the entire zipfiles.  That's a long way off in the future though and would have to be spread by word of mouth at the time outside of the boards.

FANTASTIC madmab!!
Rock and roll attitude!I see you are using an old colecovision dynamic skin, be aware because on the new coleco dynamic skin, i used a thiner font for the sdtv settings
2* genre:, little bug or have i wrote it twice in the colecovision synopsis.txt?
As it is it's excellent, perheaps could we centered the text to the left?
AdamX is the best and most complete colecovision emu of the planet now smile.gif

Hey Madmab, talking about "virtual keyboard" - I wonder how the
actual virtual keybaord is built? Does it use some kind of PNG images
for the keys that are compiled/merged within the XBE on each build?

Or the virtual keyboard on Xport's emus is build dynamically from some
kind of file who dictate the color of the keys, color of the text,
borders, sizes, etc etc? (Just like the CSS file on a XHTML set)

Just curious...
(I really don't like that WHITE/GRAYSH virtual keyboard with SERIFED fonts.)

Thanks!

Hey guys,

I just arrived back home (it is past midnight here) and tomorrow I will
be able to create some new VIRTUAL KEYBOARD artwork proposals.

I will do it in the morning, as soon a possible, this way Madmab could include it
on the new compiles (if he finds out suitable, of course). I will make some
different proposals, colors, etc.

It could be perfect if the virtual keyboard could become part of the skin,
on the same way as all the other backgrounds and so on... just one idea.

(We are experts on suggesting things... ha ha ha!)
Cheers,
Cospefogo.

QUOTE(madmab @ Nov 12 2008, 08:28 PM) View Post

Well after getting the synopsis stuff, my new keypad/keyboard code going.  I got the following to compile with the latest changes/updates.  AdamX (of course), Atarixlbox, A7800x, Z26, and MednaFen_Lynx.  Presumably MednaFen_NES and TG16 should work as well.

Of course the record/playback code will have to be tested on the Lynx, NES, and TG16.  But so far it has not seemed to create any issues with other emulators.

Hey madmab,

I've got a few questions for ya....

What order are you planning on releasing the emus in when ADAM is wrapped up?

Will all of the changes that you made be easy to bring to the other emus as well?  (Minus system specific stuff like the overlays, of course)

I'm just asking because I would like to add a few things to your release.  I wanted to add text files for each system that are formatted nicely for viewing within the emulators (however you decide this will work the best).  They're basically the Wikipedia history of the systems with the images and references stripped out, and the text formatted to look good in a standard .TXT file.

I would also like to add a skin configuration or two for the skins, and if Gilles doesn't mind, I'd like to re-do his sprite folders a bit (Like using capital letters and also grouping them somewhat, probably by name, so similar types of images can be found next to each other).

Oh... speaking of that, I don't think you answered this question I had earlier.  When I was testing the spacing out of images, I had hundreds of empty place holders between each other.  Although there were a ton of empty placeholders, I couldn't find any other problems (such as pauses, lock-ups or any other memory issues).

So I was hoping there could be a way to make the emu automatically skip through empty placeholders if there is no folder.  (Say, if you went from 1_, 2_, 3_ to 11_, 12_, 13_ with no current folders for 4_ through 9_).  I was thinking this is a good compromise and fix, given that we can't make the skins system as sophisticated as I proposed before without a major rewrite in code.  This way, we could have 10 or 20 empty placeholders between "sprite type" where we could add new artwork to an existing Dynamic skin without having to rename every folder that comes after the ones that you added.  (Since you've already encountered the problem of memory issues just by having artwork, you'd be the best judge at how many sprites a skin can ultimately use before there are memory issues).

I'll try that out sometime this weekend.  I'm going house hunting, so I don't know how much I'll get around to this weekend.

Later,
~Rx

No particular order but most likely it would be AdamX, A7800x, then Atarixlbox (out of the ones I worked on).  Once I add a few new things to those.

I still have a good ways to go for Z26.  A few things for WinstonX, Kegs, Oddysey and BlissX.  A minor thing for DosXbox.  Have not decided what to do about Winuaex.  I have something I wanna do but that puppy has memory constraints.

Outside of re-working the rewind system and possible new mappers for the NES (someone asked about that)?  I don't have anything particular I wanted to do to the Medna stuff.  So they should be easy to kick out the door.

As far as adapting other emu's.  It only took me less than an hour to do Medna so it should not be too bad once the time comes.  Although I have noticed I usually endup re-arranging things in init_console.  Something I have not documented real well.

I see you're releasing a few first that I haven't touched in the Xtras department.  Maybe I'll get around to looking at them when you get to that point.  Glad it should be easy for you to carry over the new stuff you've done that isn't system specific.

Just let me know when something is just about ready for a release and I'll get you those text documents.  I've probably got about 10 of them almost done.  Just need to clean them up a bit.

QUOTE
Well that's because I really don't know.  The memory management of C is a complete mystery to me.  I do not know where in memory these un-initialized variables are pointing at.  So if I change them (to keep track of which ones are empty) I could be altering part of the program itself.

Memory allocation is not something I know a whole lot about in C.  But I do know if your not careful it is very easy to overwrite other sections of memory which can cause weird things to happen, lock-ups, and general chaos.

I'm not asking for you to change anything like that internally in the code or anything.  I realize that messing with that could cause a ton of other unforseeable problems.  I'm just asking you to put a simple little code in the front end that will automatically scroll to the next folder.  So if there is no 4_ through 9_, it will skip from 3_ to 10_ without making you scroll through 7 empty slots.  The slots are still there, and you're not doing anything to change that, you've just put a simple mask in the front end that skips the numbers for empty folders when creating your skins.

QUOTE
Although I do see the benefits of spacing things out.  I'm not sure if it will be easily possible.  I suspect this is why X-port was very specific in his instructions about keeping the folders and any animated sprites in a very strict numeric order.

Most of this would be done by hand by Gilles and I.  If the mask was put in, it would be easy for us to set up the skins in a way where there are empty placeholders that would be utilized only when the folder was used.  I've tried it myself and it doesn't seem to cause any problems.  The only problem seems to be that when there is no folder for a specific number, you have to scroll through all of those empty sprites by hand until you get to the next number.

The end result is if we find out in the future this doesn't work, after you've put in that small bypass code, we just won't space out the folders and you wouldn't even have to change any code back since we wouldn't be spacing out the folders anymore.

QUOTE
It ultimately depends on each emu.  Some emu's consume more memory than others.  As far as I know dosxbox and Winuaex are the two big memory monsters.  Unfortunately like I said I barely understand how all the memory allocations stuff works.  I slept thru that part of my C course...... Oh wait a minute. I never took a C course.  laugh.gif

Guess we'll have to trial and error it then.  I took a C class about 10 years ago at a Jr College.... not sure if that counts.

~Rx

EDIT:  Here's the Colecovision FAQ

When I use "View Text File" option in the "Utilities" menu, it does word-wrap the document, but quite a bit is cut off on the edges.  I can move the end of the right border in or out, but all that does is black over more of the text (it doesn't re-word-wrap).  I couldn't seem to find a way to fix the way that the text viewer displayed the files.

Any ideas madmab?

Gilles,

Any chance you can hook me up with the synopsis that you've done so far?  I can't test out the new synopsis code without it.

EDIT 3:  Wow.... I'm trying to make new skins now with the new names and it's really a bear.  Now I'm more convinced than ever that we need to have this feature in the skins because re-organizing sprites after adding new ones is MUCH more work than simply renaming them and FTPing them over.  You basically have to rebuild from scratch.  I'm going to be working on a prototype, but it won't be quick.  I'm not nearly as familiar with this stuff as Gilles is.  I have a new appreciation for how much work he's put into this, besides just the photoshop stuff.

Later guys,
~Rx

Well I was really just listing the status of everything.  It does not really matter to me what order we release them in.  Although I still have to add documentation and commercial viewing, etc.
The problem is not reading the "empty" indexes.  It's writing to those indexes so that I know they are not in use that is the problem.  A write can easily corrupt memory.  A read does just that.  It reads a memory location.

I'll be here working any way you want to do it.

But I'm still looking into it.

I'll upload my skin (an alteration of Gilles ADAM) when I get it as far as I can go with it.  That should make testing easier if you can see firsthand what I'm talking about.

I have not really looked at the view text file code.  I assume you have your text file screen sized properly to fit your tv??

As far as I know, yes.  I looked everywhere I could find for editing the text size of the screen.  Also, the "blackness" immediately comes from the right of the screen when I move the right joystick, leaving me to believe that the text is sized perfect for my TV, but more of the text bleeds into the blackness.

If you get some time, download the system FAQ I posted above and try it out for yourself.

ok after reading up on MFC CArray classes which is what the sprite routines use I think I figured it out.  I guess this makes my first lesson in C++ and the Microsoft Foundation Class library.  laugh.gif

Anyways if you could send me this experimental skin you are working on I'll run memchecks on it while it is loaded to see how much RAM it is sucking up.  Since these are "dynamic" arrays it should be ok.  Just dont go picking ridiculously high upper ranges.  The size of the array is gonna equal the highest value used.  Luckily it does not allocate too much RAM.  Maybe 100-200 bytes per entry (whether it is used or not).

No need.  I have a sneaky suspicion that the code that calculates how much space a font uses is slightly flawed.  Seems the longer a line the less accurate it is.  laugh.gif  I ran into this problem when working on the synopsis code.

That's freakin awesome if you guys can get a visual to work.  Nice image man.

My only suggestion is that there be different artwork for the different controllers depending on the system and maybe a setting in the emu to choose which one, or better yet, maybe when you're viewing them if you press a button it would scroll through the different layouts.  I have several controllers, most of them official US 2nd gen controllers and the black/white buttons are located on the right, under the right analog stick.  I know some of the third party controllers have them different too.  I've honestly never seen a controller with the layout you're showing me, although it has the same amount of buttons in different spots.

I guess Cospefogo really should have made it Gilles, since he's the one using the controller. But I think randomly deflecting it on madmab made it nicer in that randomly funny way. As long as no one gets there feelings hurt tongue.gif

Hey Gilles,

Question: Are you planning any more rumble packs for other emulators? (or already made ones I just don't know about) If so great. love.gif  I tried to mess around with an SNES game without rumble yet and It wouldn't work no matter what I tried. Is there a place I can learn more about configuring rumbles? Or maybe you can help me with your own experience, if it's not too much trouble. Thanks

Yeah madmab, the enhanced help screen should be very great for the kids (or the Xport emu users newbies)
They didn't knew they could adcance the screenshot by pressing the left thumstick on the right(too bad for them ph34r.gif )
With this in mind, i think the best solution would be to replace the:
"pressing the left thumstick right/left to auto adcance screenshots" displayed in the top of the gameselect screen by :
"press start for help" since all is well explained in the enhanced help screen

off topic: to create rumbles you must be familiar with the change in the hexadecimal adress
I have a lot of rumbles for the xport emus i have created for myself, i should release them one day tongue.gif

I don't like it there, matter of fact, I don't like it anywhere.

I vote for getting rid of that line too.

Press start for help or something like that would be pretty good I think with the controller picture.

Good idea Gilles,

Yeah I think we can change it to "Press Start for help".  I actually use "start" for other hidden things, but that's a secret.  wink.gif  tongue.gif

I say use the "s" controller since it is supposedly more widely used.  The original controller did not really last long.

Gilles,

In my opinion you should remove the "smoke" effect from behind the S controller
in the latest help screen. The is no need to overload the image yet more.
We have ten thousand text boxes floating all around and ten thousand guide
lines.

LESS is MORE, people.

What do you guys think about having multiple songs for an emulator?  I thought it might be cool if you could easily choose which song you wanted to play when it started up and if you could have it randomize which song it starts up with.  (maybe we already can do this?)

EDIT:  Wow.... I'm messing around with the NES video after moving all my directories around and you really don't notice exactly how much madmab's tweaked the ADAM emu until you try configuring another emu that hasn't been tweaked yet.  I pretty much forgot where everything used to be.

EDIT2:  Madmab....... HUUUUUUUUGE favor here man.  I've made a ton of room on my computer, but I need to clear a lot off my XBox.  I have about 200GB that I can clear off when I remove PSX games off my emu.  The only problem is, it takes a ton of work to unzip them and send them over and everything.  I'd like to test them before I send them back.

I had a big problem with the emulator when I switched cores and it would seem to "dump" the skin and all of its settings after you exited the game after changing the core.  It also starts you in the "D:\" directory when you go to start a game as well (the default14.xbe and default16.xbe are in that folder, so I imagine that loading up the alternative XBE file for the different core somehow messes this up and since it's the last action that you've taken the directory is stuck there)

I know you said one of your newest fixes for ADAM was getting rid of that nasty little bug that would default all of your directory choices to the last directory you used.  I was hoping that you could apply your new changes to the PCSXBox for me so I can better test the games before removing them.  Alternate cores work on occasion, but it just gets to be such a pain in the ass to test them because of this huge glitch.

Thanks man,
~Rx

It is not a glitch the ps1 emulator has 3 ini's. One for each xbe.Look in the saves in the emulator you have to set all 3 up there is one for each core.Whatever core you launched out of last will be the one that will show up when you exit the game.I dont know how this could be simplified into 1 it most likely cant since it seems it is kind of like having 3 different emulators wrapped up into 1.Anyway unless it can be changed just set up all 3 ini's and it will cure your problem.

Post by: run088 on November 29, 2008, 05:43:00 PM
There could be a possible upside to this setup. Some games go from working to unworking core to core.If a game worked on earlier cores but does not work on the newer cores in the emulator then it might be possible to add those cores back into the mix as well to get that compatibility from them. This would increase the amount of ini's that you have for the emulator but you might be able to get more games working for your collection.

I think a long time ago I copied the newer ps1 build over an old ps1 build and if I am not mistaken it would allow me to choose all the different cores.I could be wrong it might be my imagination.

Sorry guys.  I think you misunderstood me.  I looked at it what I said and it was a little confusing.  Let me clarify...

I wasn't calling the three .XBE's a bug.  I understand that they are different PSX cores and that they allow for greater compatibility.  In my testing I actually have several games marked that work better with different cores.  The only problem is that when I test each new core on a non-working game, the skin gets all jacked up on me when I exit the game.  The only way to start a new game then is to restart the emulator or navagate back to the roms folder.

You guys gave me an idea though.  I wasn't aware at all that there was a separate INI for each core.  I'm going to look for the alternate INI config files and see if I can just copy the skin settings from the working one into there.  Maybe that will fix it.

The bug I was actually referring to was the directory saving itself for everything in the emu based on the last folder you were in.  I just wanted the emu to stay in the current directory for each setting and choice.  (maybe not technically viewed as a bug, but if you improved this in ADAM, I could sure use it here)  Maybe I can find the "initial directory" setting in the .INI if there is one and set that to the folder to the images in the mean time.  That would eliminate the problems I'm having if it works.

Thanks guys,
~Rx

EDIT:

Hey guys.  Fixed a big part of my problem.  Here's what I did....

I went into the pcsx14 and pcsx16 INI files and Changed: rom_dir=D:\PSXCDS To: rom_dir=F:\Roms\Playstation

Now I don't have to navigate to another directory when I exit a game anymore.

There were a lot of other settings changes that I had done that didn't show up on the others, so I eventually just copied over the entire INI's from the original one.

Here's two suggestions I'd make on fixing the PCSXBox emulator madmab:

1)  Make it so that when you change settings in the INI for one core, it changes them for all cores by default.  There are way to many things to change 3 times over everytime you want to make a change to the skin.

2)  When loading up another core, it shows a few screens from whatever skin you have set to the default in that core's INI file.  It would be nice to remove that and just have a black screen until the game shows up.  (For example, with the default skin that shows Castlevania SOTN, it shows the loading screen with the moon, that separates from the middle to the top and bottom of the screen leaving the screen with the "Save game room" and music starts for about two seconds, then it shows another loading screen with the "pink" loading letters.  Just looks pretty rough and would be nice to eliminate that if it can be done.

EDIT 2:  I was just thinking about the FAQ that I will be providing for all of the emulators in a text file and then I got to thinking about all of the other text files and I came up with an idea.   What do you guys think about a textfile viewing screen that looks like any other screen in the skin?    I was thinking, what if there was a way to make a text file viewable in a emuskin screen?  Wouldn't it be cool to be able to view the help files right on a screen we configure so we can completley control how the help and information files work?

What do you think?

EDIT 3:  What do you guys think about making alternate settings for foreign languages?  Gilles could do a French language setting, right?  Be pretty cool to see if other people would work on other foreign languages to add to it so more people can enjoy this.

QUOTE(madmab @ Nov 30 2008, 03:22 AM) View Post

The easiest solution is to just have all three cores write to the same .ini file and store the game configs in the same directory.  I'd have to look at the code but I do not remember any of the cores having different options to chose from so the config files should be the same across the board.

All three cores have an individual ini file with a matching name.  When you make changes to an individual one, it doesn't make the changes to the other two.  The only two ways to sync them now is to copy over the other two with your good one and FTP them over, or to load up a game with each core and configure it with the emu.

EDIT:  Everything, and I mean, everything has to be done three separate times.  No wonder when I was using this back in the day I thought it acted so glitchy.  If I was currently on a different core, it would behave differently for me.  I bet I was fixing things on one core that weren't fixed on one or two of the others all the time.

This one desparately needs your help madmab.  There's got to be a way to save most of this stuff between the three configs at the same time.

Thanks man.  Sounds great.  I wont' be able to do too much more on it until Wednesday anyways.

One other thing I notice is that when you flip between cores one too many times it will lock up when you're starting a new game.  When you reset and try that game again it works fine.  I'm not sure if there is some memory not being dumped or what happens here, but it means that if you happen to bounce from core to core while starting games, you may have to hard boot your XBox on occasion.  Not a problem if you're only playing a game or two though.

I was just thinking today that we will also need a help screen for the "favorites select screen".  Since the white button "removes game from favorites".

We may also need one for Vice64, which for some reason makes the Y button "save to favorites" and the white button "display game details".  I might just switch those two anyways because it is counter intuitive.

What did you guys think of:

1) A multi-language menu

2) An in-skin text viewer where the user could view text files in a nicer screen than green on black.

3) A way to randomize music on startup for emus that gilles finds multiple good songs that fit the platform.

Oh.....

4) Any ideas yet for the "enhanced favorites" screen yet madmab?

Hey Gilles,

Thanks for getting that done so fast bud.  I don't even have the beta yet  cool.gif

I updated your post in the thread.  Please check and make sure that I have your newest releases for all of the skins you've provided so far.  I believe I do, but since I fell a little behind I'm not completely sure.  Also, if there is more information or pics you'd like me to add for any of them, just PM me or put it in a post here and I'll edit it.  I took a lot of the info you put into them out because with newer versions it was looking pretty messy and some of that info was outdated or conflicting.  I figured I'd just clean it all up and give you the option to add whatever you wanted.

Hey Madmab,

I never heard back from you.  What exactly did you mean by this question "RessX did you ever finish up that alternative game select menu you were working on?"

Whenever you get a chance with that emu I'll be around.  I only have to work 1 day out of the next 7, so I plan on getting a lot done on my last big chance to do it before Christmas.

Later guys,

Hey guys.  The PSX beta looks and acts great.  I did notice a few bugs though.

Bugs:

1) Screenshots only seem to show up when they want to.  Sometimes when I change a setting they won't show up anymore.  For instance, they were showing up and scrolling through the box/action/title/cd just fine until I edited the filename filter and now they don't show up on their own.  I can press right on the left joystick and make the 0001.png show up, but it won't scroll through the other images.

I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get them to work again, but then I got it.  It seems that I have to "Browse Screenshots", look at a few screenshots, back out to the game list and now the screenshots work fine again (Unfortunately, this somehow deleted the file extention filter, so I have anywhere from 1 to 4 entries for each game in the game select screen now again)

2) Sometimes when I exit a game, the XBox just locks up on me at the "In Game Options" screen.

3) Whenever you select an option, it always goes back to rom directory.  Is there a way to save the last directory to each setting?

4) There are two boxsizes for PSX, so separating Boxart from screenshots doesn't work very well like it has for the other emulators.  Many of the smaller boxes show up at the aspect ratio of the screenshots, while about half of the CD images seem to do the same thing.

Not a bug, just an observation: Rewind does not seem to work.  I enabled the rewind and mapped it to the White button and it never did anything.

New ideas for options on all emulators for future release:

1)  Lock Favorites.  A setting that will make it so you can't add or delete any favorites from your favorite list unless you turn this back off.

2)  Disable Delete Rom.  Same Idea as the Lock Favorites option.  Keeps somebody from accidentally deleting a rom.

I'll hold off on my PSX testing until you get a chance to look at these things madmab.

Thanks guys,
~Rx

EDIT:  Gilles, there are some typos in the sprites:

1) BOTH OF THESE HAVE AN EXTRA SPACE AFTER [BUTTONS]
20_[BUTTONS]  A
21_[BUTTONS]  B

2) ALL OF THESE NEED THE OTHER WORDS CAPITALIZED:
40_[PM3] Cursor main menu
50_[PM3] Rombrowser blade
51_[PM3] Rombrowser half blade
60_[TEXT] Madmab edition
61_[TEXT] Splash screen
(There are many more with this problem, just didn't list them all out)

3)  I think the "by Gilou9999" looks messy and uses extra spaces when we're already short on space. I think the way I did it in my edit of your ADAM works much better.

Example:

73_[BANNER] Breath of Fire 4 by Gilou9999  would be 73_[BANNER-Gilou9999] Breath of Fire IV
(Note that I also changed 4 to IV because it looks better and that's how I'm naming all of the Xtras so they match across all aspects of the emu if we do this to game names in the future)

I don't think it was, but it's been about a year or more since I've done PSX testing.  It doesn't happen a ton, but as you know it's annoying when it does.

QUOTE
3)  You lost me here.  What options are you selecting that go back to the rom directory?  Did it do this with the previous pcsxbox?

I believe the old version acted just like ADAM did, where it saved the last spot you were at for any other option.  This is definately an upgrade to that system, but I was hoping that there could be something that wrote a directory to an .ini file for every single option where you need to navigate to a directory.  Is that more clear.  I know this is a tough one to illustrate.

QUOTE
4)  Could you send me a couple samples so I can see if I come up with something?

Sure.  I'll put it on my to do list.

QUOTE
Rewind ->  Not sure if it is even "hooked up".  I know that the Vice64 emulator does not have it hooked up as well.  Chances is are it wont be possible.  The rewind code is a huge memory hog and it doesn't take much to lock it up.  The PSX has pretty large memory compared to the other x-port emulated systems.

That's one feature I never use.  No loss to me.  You're right.  It's probably not possible.

QUOTE
Lock favorites and disable delete Rom.  I take it we would shove these in the general settings?

Sure.  Or we could put them in the regular configuration menu for easy access.  What do you think?

1)  Although I think it would be possible the amount of work that would have to go into it would be pretty substancial.  On top of that maintenance would be pretty high if I needed to move or add menu options around.  Something that seems to have been happening ALOT as of late.  tongue.gif

I didn't know how much work for you it would be if somebody made the translation for each of the options exactly where they are now.  It was just an idea, if somebody who is fluent in another language wanted to change the english text to another language for all of the options.  Didn't know if Gilles would like seeing the emus in french too.   cool.gif

QUOTE
2)  What?  Green on black not your choice of color?  laugh.gif  Where do you get green on black from anyways?  When I went into the text viewer it shows white on black.

Sorry.... the ZSNESXBox is Green on black.  I forgot that XPORT is white on black.  Maybe that's the only way to really view it so it's readable.  I thought maybe we could get a cool looking page on the emu to display it on a nice background though.

QUOTE
3)  Add it to the wish list.  laugh.gif  I do have to admit it would be nice to have the song change up from time to time.

Cool.  I'm going to really have to start keeping track of the ideas.  I hope you are.

QUOTE
Going back to the "delete file" question.  I thought it defaults to asking the user "Are you sure?".  If that is the case couldn't we just do the same for the Favorites thing?  Just asking.  I still think they'd be better under "General Options" maybe we could just have them default to off.

We could just have it ask the question, but I suppose this goes all the way back to the "Dummy Proof" mode we talked about like a year ago.  I'd like these things to default to off (Although adding games to favorites is something that people will generally want to do from time to time I'm thinking, that's why I suggested that it be put in the configuration options so you can get to it through one sub-menu instead of finding it buried in two pages on the general settings page)

Well based on how I've seen other programs do it (which would be the proper way) by having a file with the alternative menu text, allowing the user to "pick" a language.  It would take alot of internal restructuring to accomodate that.  Maintaining it when moving stuff around would increase proportionaly to how many languages were supported.

Bummer....  Maybe something to think about way down the road when everything else is perfected.

I just don't like cluttering a menu that should lead to other menu's with specific options, if you know what I mean.  It just comes across to me as too cluttered.  That's the big thing and as we come up with more ideas that just means more clutter and less flexibility.

Well.... More ideas and more flexibility, but I see what you mean.  I think these options are pretty important here though.  Maybe we can have one option "Dummy Mode" (or whatever more user friendly name you want to give it, like locked mode) and when you chose it, it will turn off these two options, and any other options we'd like to see frozen when the kids are playing it.

Yeah.  I'd say it should probably be last on the list, since a revision would need to be made on any menu changes down the road.  We'll put it on our idea lists and talk about it again way down the road.

QUOTE
Actually this gives me an idea.  If "disabling" certain options is more important than "removing them from the menu" I think I got an idea that could work feasibly.  We might have to nitpick a little on how to "activate" st00pid mode, but I think my idea will work.

Yeah.... I just came up with that as I was replying to you.  I think that disabling a bunch of options and then flipping them all back on like a switch is a pretty sweet idea.  That will keep a lot of people out of trouble, and keep me from getting so many calls from my brothers who accidentally did something they can't undo.  The "Locked Mode" option could also then be placed right in the main configuration menu without cluttering it up at all.

Man it's cool having you guys around to bounce these ideas around off of each other.

Well assuming we leave the menu option present but "disabled" it would be fairly easy to setup the code to just ignore that feature if it is listed as being a "locked" option.

I love that idea.  By disabled, do you mean "grayed out"?  That would be a really nice touch so somebody knows that the option is set to unusable instead of dealing with a nasty bug.

QUOTE
It's just a matter of drumming up a list of what options we want "lockable".  I can then create an internal list which would be referenced.  The user could go into the "Locked Mode Settings" or something like that and define which options they want to be lock when "locked mode" is active, or something like that.

Now that I know, I can start thinking about it while I'm using an emulator.  If this is really doable, I would think that we would benifit greatly from adding a whole ton of options to this.  Now that I think of it, let's take it one step further.....

1) We make a "You know when you were fumbling around with your sasquach hands and deleted some shit you shouldn't have [DISABLED]" mode.
2) The option right beneath that could be for a text file that explains exactly what the option shuts off/turns on.
3) We make a second disable option which would pretty much put everything except for romplay critical menu options.   A "Total Lockdown" option, if you will.  Or "Unbreakable Mode" maybe.  I would have to go through the menus and think about what exactly would go into it, but I think we could probably just do the following with it....

Main Menu:
Select from Favorites
Select Game
Skin Configuration
Configuration
Utilities
Return to Launcher

NOTE:  As I was looking at that above, I came up with what I think is a great idea.  Call it "Configuration Lockdown" and put the option in "Utilities"  When turned on, the only options, as seen above, are Select from Favorites, Select Game, Utilites (to get back to it to turn it back off again), and Return to Launcher.

 lurk.gif  TOTAL DUMMY PROOF!!!!!! flamethrower.gif

QUOTE
The only other thing is deciding how to let the user "activate" this functionality.  Whether it be by an INI setting or some other less "obvious" manner.

That's more up your alley man.  I don't know much about that stuff.  I guess that would be weighed out between what's easier for you to do and what takes up the least system resources.  I think the INI is descrete enough if you're worried about somebody changing things there.  Most people wouldn't ever even notice it either way, I think, and those that do would probably know enough to know when they've messed something up and gotten themselves into trouble.  "Delete and reinstall the emu" as quoted by me and probably a thousand others in here over the years, right?

and I go to POWER OFF in the XBMC. I hate to shut it off pressing
the power button in the middle of my game or something...
looks too... brutal... ha ha.

It reminds me when we need to force a shutdown on a frozen
computer. I don't like it... I prefer to go through the correct ways.
Pressing a button ---> Turn off.

SO ----- I WONDER?

Can we have a SHUTDOWN XBOX/POWER OFF in the Main menu for
the emulators? MAME has this, FBA has this...
It could be nice to have Xport with this too.

Just an idea...
C.

Well I wasn't exactly thinking graying the text but I whipped up something that should do the trick.  Right now it is coded to cut the brightness in half of the "locked" menu option.  Or I could just pick a nice shade of gray and stick that that.  Or even RED.. muahahaha

For GOD I swear...
If you use RED I will hunt you and stick an APPLE into your mouth!
And shot you with a crossbow!

Hahahahaha.

Cut the alpha to 50%... or even 25%.
Don't use a solid color.
This can be aggressive to different skins out there.

Thanks bróder.
Cospefogo.

PS. Just remembered something that really annoyed me in the past, but in the
end I got used to it --- The color flashing titles in all Xport emus. For a long time
I really wished to be able to set the titles on a SOLID single color to better
acomodate them on my skins... I even wrote to Xport talking abut it.

But in the end... nevermind.

Sweet..... out of that whole post the only thing you brought up was the "grayed out" thing.

You like the rest of it then?

I was also thinking that it would be nice to turn off the screenshots and aspect ratio in the basic lockdown mode as well.  I'm always accidentally taking screenshots or fudging the aspect ratio when I play.  Of course it's pretty much all shut down in the Total Lockdown mode.

In lockdown mode you can't even play games.
It locks the Game Select screen as well.
All you can see are the screenshots.

Well if your talking about accidently activating that stuff from within a game.  All of that stuff can be unmapped in the "UI Joypad Mappings" section of the Controller Configuration.

Items include..

Sfx Volume up/down, Bgm Volume up/down, Fast Forward, Save/Load State, Change Save State Slot, Screenshot, Options Menu/Pause Emu, Change Gfx Filter?, Music Control Menu, Start/Stop Recording and Playback, Auto-Screenshot Capture Mode, Virtual Keyboard, Text Browser, Turn On/Off Rewind, Rewind, and Turn On/Off SlowMotion.

Yeah.  I know you can control each one individually.  I've done it.  Again, and again and again.  Everytime I get an emu update I have to re-do it since I'm not sure if I'll break anything by picking and choosing which files I want to bring to the new emu, so I just start from scratch.

Many of those things mentioned above are regular annoyances while playing the game, and I think this is why the lockdown modes will be a very great implementation.

I would like Sfx Volume up/down, Bgm Volume up/down, Screenshot, Change Gfx Filter?, Music Control Menu, Start/Stop Recording and Playback, Auto-Screenshot Capture Mode, Text Browser (Assuming this is an automatic "button combo" way of bringing it up we're talking about), Turn On/Off Rewind, Rewind, and Turn On/Off SlowMotion.

So nice to be able to control all of those with a "breaker" like the lockdown modes instead of flipping each switch on and off manually.

Don't get how that applies to what I was talking about madmab.  I'm just talking about the ability to lock all that stuff down with the flip of a switch instead of having to reprogram this stuff every time I have a new version of an emulator.
Title: Madmab And Gilles' New Releases Thread

I was always under the impression that the idea of a lock down mode was to prevent users who are unfamilar with what they are doing (like kids) changing things that they shouldn't be accident, or doing things that may be harmful or cripple the emulator.  In particular MENU options.

If you are clearing out all of the configurations everytime you updat to a new version it sounds to me like your doing even more work reconfiguring all those games.  Compared to disabling the UI mappings.  Would a "clear all UI mappings" option make more sense?  With the exception of keypad, keyboard, and "in game menu" of course.

I got a bug.  It's on the NES emu, but it's probably on all of them.

I'm making some of my own configurations, mainly changes to the game-select screen, and I have this problem.  Every time I load a different configuration that has movie previews after I've been using one without movie previews, I have to turn the previews back on.  I also have to turn the movie previews back off when I load a skin config that doesn't use them.

Any way we could have "Show Movie Previews" be one of the things saved in the configuration?  Or am I missing something here?

ALSO:  PSX: when you scroll left through alter movie/screenshot previews the list goes on forever with garbled titles.

Not really a bug.  I just don't save that information with the skin.  Kinda figured it was something the user would want to set themselves.  But it does kinda make sense.  Maybe what I'll do is have it store that information when you save/load a configuration.  If it doesn't find that "parameter" in the skin config it will just leave it to whatever the user set last.

I don't see any benefit for it not to save this at any point now that this has been pointed out.  Truth is, aside from Gilles and Frank and anyone else taking up the Dynamic Skins, nobody is really going to have a "fresh" start where this wouldn't be selected.  Any of the configurations that I have made were just edits based off of Gilles previously made skins (I would pick the one most similar to my particular desire for that config and having the screenshots/movies on or off with the config would be perfect)

So sure... if there isn't info on it because it's a brand new Dynamic skin, I would probably just set it to default on, until the user set it and saved it.

Guess it wasn't really a bug, but it would sure save a lot of frustration changing this.  I'm really surprised that Gilles hadn't brought it up with all those configs he's had to do (probably hundreds before we got all the sprite names identical)

EDIT:  I've started a document on my computer.  It has ideas I've come up with, things we've discussed in the past that haven't been done yet, and any bugs I find along the way.  I figure at this point you already have your hands full and if I post them here it will probably get lost along the way. This is on the list, so I won't forget about it.   I can cross off that PSX bug now though.   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

EDIT 2:  This will be on the list too, so no big deal to fix just this second.  When you get a chance though could you do some testing on the PSX emu?  It seems to lock up on me quite frequently when exiting a game.  I tried playing Evil Dead today and it was just a black screen for the title and the action and I know that it worked before (I don't know if it is due to the emu or because my configs are screwed up yet because I gave up in frustration after Evil Dead locked up my box on exit before I could check the settings).

I am using Gilles newest skin for it, if that helps.

Until this is fixed (or until I revert temporarily to an old build) I won't be able to do any PSX testing like this.  What I did yesterday was clean up the games from A-E (in the small collection I've already gathered artwork for and tested) a few weeks back.  Even though I am keeping quite a few games on the Box, I was able to remove 16GB of them now that I got the artwork for them.  I don't want to remove any more games until I can grab screenshots for them.  I don't think I'll ever have a full PSX artwork pack for the Xtras, but it should have all of the artwork for about 500-600 games when I'm done.

What do you guys think about a "Kid Friendly" mode?

Something that parents could set if they wanted to limit the ability of roms that could be accessed in the emulators....

Wow.... way down the road I know... but wouldn't it be cool to consolidate the configurations by having a base configuration for all emus in one directory and any addendums that are emu-specific for the emu to launch?

This way, if you were to set "Kid Friendly" mode on one emu, it would open all subsequent emus with that mode on until it was turned off (I wouldn't even make it an option easily found or even misname it on purpose to seem like some boring and useless emu function, but it's really the key to open "Uncensored Mode 1 which would show all games that have even adult content that were sold to a mass audience.  "Uncensored Mode 2" could be if you wanted the emu to show the Pr0n games as well.

Of course... this would be dependent on somebody adding a "Rating:" field to the synopsis to work right...

Just a few premature thoughts....

Please, don't take these too seriously guys. We are messing with the betas, so there must be some bugs.

All tests has made with MednafenX-NES v10.03b (Madmab ed)
These aren't any order.

________________________________________________________

1. Configure Skin/Select Skin brings up odd popup message:

Change to the directory and press START  (Flashing title)
Press B  (Normal line)

Skin switching itself works fine.
________________________________________________________

2. In my opinion adjusting volume with right thumb left/right is way too slow. It takes ages to raise volume from min. to max. (Now talking gui volume, but afaik this issue appears in game too.)
This have bothered me since 2004.
________________________________________________________

3. In help/synopsis/game select screens volume can't be adjusted at all. Is it intended?
Main menu/all 'other' menu/popup screens volume adjusting is working. (Slow)
________________________________________________________

4. In Skin Configuration Menu can we have period_period_period suffix for these lines:

Save Skin Configuration as
Load Skin Configuration

It should be:

Save Skin Configuration as...
Load Skin Configuration...

Normal menu structures have those dots. It's a rule.
________________________________________________________

5. Gilles, in your PM3 skins you have separated different aspect ratios 4:3 and 16:9 for tags like SDTV and HDTV. Right?

Why?
We both know that definition and aspect ratio are totally different things.
So why don't you use tags like 4:3 and 16:9 instead of STDV and HDTV?

The fact is, that there are SDTV's in both aspect ratios you know.

FATX do not support :::: characters, so you may need to use tags like 43 and 169 or something like that.
________________________________________________________

7. Skin Configuration/Skin Editor/Popup Menu Settings we have option called Sprite Settings.
It's useless 'cause popup menu can't have any sprites.

EDIT:
QUOTE(madmab @ Dec 3 2008, 03:07 AM) *
I was just thinking today that we will also need a help screen for the "favorites select screen".  Since the white button "removes game from favorites".

We may also need one for Vice64, which for some reason makes the Y button "save to favorites" and the white button "display game details".  I might just switch those two anyways because it is counter intuitive.

I know you have hands full already, but any decision for that?

EDIT2: And just forget about that keyboard transparency! You have a lot more greater things to do.

Glad you think so highly of the emu so far man.  A lot of brainstorming and work have gone into this so far.  I can't wait to see a synopsis-based sort/filter function!

It's funny when I go back to one of the non-beta emus I have that haven't been updated at all and how frustrated I get because the menus are completely different than what I've become used to.  Soon everyone will understand just how different and streamlined everything is becoming.

Don't sweat the English man.  You're doing muy bien  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

People shouldn't be putting two things on the buttons that control movement or the gamepad "in-game", and even if they do for things like "save game" or other options, they definately wouldn't use two buttons in place of the NES A button.  If the emu looks for just the values contained in the "A Button", "B Button", "Select Button" and "Start Button" for the NES this shouldn't be much of a problem.

And about the color, yeah that's kind of a bummer that we can't use the color if we're pulling this info from the config, but I think that being accurate is more important than asthetics in this case.

The controller configuration screen is a nightmare to navigate for me and I've done it tons of times before.  Nobody would go there to see what the "accurate" button configurations were.

The help screen for the controller should show accurate information, which would changed based on what the user has set the controls to.

I've been playing MAME CoinOPS a while now.  I hate the standard they chose for the buttons which is the use of the XBox A & B buttons for the 2 button games.  I feel more comfortable using X & A buttons.  If we had a static screen made for that one right now it would be inaccurate after I changed the configuration.

I'd almost rather just leave this out if we can't pull the config information since it wouldn't be accurate.

Hey stupot1,

The only problem with that is that the arrows do serve a purpose when navigating directories.  How to distinguish a legitimate directory from one housing your games?

One good fix I used for this was making the CD's I'd ever play a favorite.  Then it shows up just fine on your favorites list.

Whenever we finally get "multiple favorites", you could make a favorites list that only contained the Sega CD games and that would eliminate your problem all together.

I really think the ability to call up multiple favorites lists is going to be a very much used feature in the future.

Because if you have 100 CD games and you throw them all in one folder you have to scroll through every mp3 and other file to go through the games.  If you have the extentions turned off (which I do because it looks a lot cleaner) it's a guessing game which one to pick.   You still have the guessing game problem when they're in folders, but that's why I put good CD games as favorites so it's easy to start the game.

How do you decrease the width of the word-wrap in the "View Text"?  I can make black go over the text by using the right thumbstick, but itjust covers up words, it doesn't actually bring the words to wrap within the width of my screen.  Really a bummer because the synopsis looks pretty cool in the "View Text" but I can't read about 1/8th of the text that disappears over the right side of the screen.

EDIT:  What do you guys think about putting the "Configure Skin" menu under the "Configuration" menu?  I was thinking the other day that may be a good idea, but now that I'm looking at Genesis and I see that the "Launch Inserted CD" option is there it makes arrows and scrolling necessary and I think it doesn't look so great.  I know if we did this, then on most emulators the bottom button would be empty, but I think that's okay personally.  What do you think?

I haven't used the ZSNESXbox ones yet, but you won't be able to do any of that on XPORT skins until the beta is released.

I made a Surreal 64 PM3 style skin myself to hold me over until the pros make one. It actually turned out pretty good but I wasnt sure how to change the text from red to green (or yellow). Check it out..

It's hard to create a good skin for surreal, because you can set.... Almost nothing!
"ingamebg.jpg" and "bg.jpg" and that's all! ,You can't set the size/position of the text nor the romnames.
And the gui is still 640*480 bkg (like in Xports emus) but in Xport's emus, you can set a lot more things, that's more fun.

Thats what I thought thanks for the reply. I guess I will stick with the skin I made.

Sorry Gilles.  I was pretty rude yesterday.  I just needed some time to cool off.

We'll work it out somehow.  It's more work than I'd like to be doing, but we'll get it done.

Maybe we should just keep building ours as we are doing now.  I'll keep updating the thread on what needs to be done and what needs to still be fixed in the emus.  Even though are setups are different, you'll need that artwork updated as well.  When we're all done, we can upload each others whole packs and merge them how we want then.

These skins are Dynamic, right?  Who says that we both can't have different settings on them.  No reason to force each others stuff on each other.

I love the work you guys are doing.  I noticed somewhere in a thread that someone said they were having a hard time finding high res images of some systems.  I have a LOT of different systems and most of them are in mint condition, so I can take pictures to help out if needed.

For the Atari 7800, I greatly prefer the look of the NTSC system over the PAL system.  I had trouble finding a good image on the web, so I took some pictures myself.  I'm not completely satisfied yet, but I'll post a few pics to give an idea of what I've been toying around with.  I took pictures of my Odyssey 2 and Intellivision boxes as well.  I don't see any work being done on skins for those 2 emus, but if you have plans to do them, I thought the box shots made pretty good main menu screens.

One more thing, I noticed the box-shot of Water Ski for the 7800 had messed up shrink wrap.  The only good image I found on the net for that game was the same one in your artwork pack, so I made a scan of my own box.  Feel free to edit and use it if you'd like.

Thanks RessX, there are so few "active" members; we must be unite and keep a solid team, even if i am doing some mistakes sometimes. Like you see it is easy when it is just one new skin"
But in our case, it is 25 skins multiple 16 configs (15*16), it becomes easilly a nightmare when you are changing "just" one little thing. I think this kind of stuff must be done by one personn finally.

For Excalibur 007, that's it man, i want to have our skins "neutral" as they are today, a good quality pic of the system in the main menu is a good example of "neutral" style.
They are dark, because theyr goal is to display boxarts and movies at the same time, and most of the time, the boxarts are "flashy" laugh.gif . So, the pm3 background provides a good contrast.

For updog, yes the zsnexbox skins are a different beast, and aren't full customizable as our new dynamic skins.
I will update indivudually a big pack of dynamic skins saturday

I have a request, I am sure you are very busy but I figured it was worth a shot to ask. I am using surreal64 v1 (due to stuttering of games in new versions), but I was hoping you have a blank emuloadbkg image with no systems picture blended into it (or a n64 console I know that is a stretch) but just having that same black mesh style. And then having the popupbkg remade three times with these dimensions 415x244, 450x362, 208 x 171.

I know this skin would be very basic and not really up to the standards you have set with the rest of your skins but I am trying to keep a very clean look on my xbmc.

These 4 images are basiacally all that make up surreal64 v1, and I've tried to do it myself and it came so-so and was hoping an expert like you could create this.

Thanks!

I'm just getting overwhelmed again with all the things that need to be done on my front.  I just took a break from it all and got some stuff done on my Box I've been meaning to do forever like get some of those DOSBox games working.  It was like every time I was ready to sit down and upload the skins individually something new came up and I just wanted to get that done and knock one more big thing off the to-do list.  It's too late for that now without some serious work/testing.

I say we just keep making them the way that we want them separately.  We've already pooled a lot of good ideas together with it and some of that wouldn't have been possible if I haven't been following behind your work and polishing up some stuff.  When they're really all done, we can share what we've both come up with and merge what we like.  If we still want certain things different I don't see any problem with releasing both sets... Kinda like a Director's Cut and an Rx Edit.   That's what makes them dynamic.

Sorry about that again.  I'm overextending myself here and I'm just getting impatient for us to complete our work.   I didn't think I'd still be doing this when I was 30 and unless we got about 10 more helpers in the next few months it looks like I will be.  Here's hoping I'm not still obsessing over this project when I'm 32.

I'm not sure I understood you about whether or not you were interested in picture contributions and I'm not sure I was clear in my previous post either.  Basically, I was offering to take pictures of any of my systems where you may need good shots, or would prefer better shots than what you can find on the web.  I could take a slew of pictures for a given system from different angles and with different accessories and upload them for you to parse through and see what you like.

However, I hadn't seen some of the new skins in the "other" thread when I made my post.  It looks like you've got some pretty good pics for some of the systems that are missing in this thread.  (I check this thread often, but not the other... I thought the other thread was older, but it looks like this one is out of date).  It looks like you've got it pretty well covered now, but if you would like anything, here are some things I could contribute.

Some of the systems I own that have xport emus:

Apple ][c  (mint, but no accessories... you're better off with pics on the net)
Apple ][e (with monitor and some boxed games, but it's kinda yellowed and ugly... you're better off with pics on the net)
Atari 2600 (classic wooden model/aka heavy sixer)
Atari 2600 Jr. (with many various joysticks, trackball, many boxed games, etc. etc.)
Atari 2600 Jr. (with smaller rainbow stripe)
Atari 5200 (with many games, trackball, original box)
Atari 7800 (with Control Pads, Proline controller, TAC-2 controllers, many boxed games)
Atari 800XL (with various drives etc.)
Atari XE Game System or XE GM (with various games, lightguns, etc.)
Atari 130XE (with various drives, lightguns, boxed games, etc.)
Atari ST (with color monitor, tons of boxed games, etc.)
Atari Lynx (with original box, many boxed games etc.)
Colecovision (with various controllers, driving wheel, Atari 2600 converter, etc.)
Commodore 64 (with tons of drives, accessories, boxed games, etc etc.)
Commodore 64C (with several drives, and same as above)
Commodore Plus/4 (with original box)
Commodore 128 (with drives, and same as above)
Commodore Amiga (with original box, some boxed games etc.)
Intellivision (with original box, many boxed games, voice extender etc.)
Intellivision II (with original box, etc.)
NES (with boxed power pad, boxed games, various controllers, etc.)
Odyssey 2 (with original box, many boxed games etc.)
Playstation (with original box, etc.)
PSOne
Sega Dreamcast (various models/editions, boxes, various controllers, dreameye, tons of VMU's etc.)
Sega Master System (with lightguns, boxed games, etc.)
Sega Genesis (with many boxed games etc.)
- Converter to play Master system games (with original box)
- 32X addon (with original box, many boxed games)
TI-99 (with original box, many games, but my actual unit is beige rather than silver & black... actually, I don't know if this emu is xport as I've never used it)

I may be missing some things, but it's late... and I'm not at home to look at my stuff.  Also, I have many more systems, but I left out ones I didn't "think" were xport emulated.  Pretty much every system except the Apple ][e is mint or near mint condition.  Many boxes are mint, but not all.

Hey Excalibur007,

I'd love to see some pics for the more unknown systems you have like the Odyssey and the TI-99.  Not a lot of good high quality pics for stuff like that floating around out there.

I am about 99% sure the TI-99 is an XPORT emu.  I'm not by my stuff now to try it out, but I think the only two emus that I have kept on the box that aren't XPORT, ZSNESXBox, N64 are the Thompson and the Vectrex.

I grabbed your Water Ski image BTW... I'm okay with the artwork for the most part on all the stuff that I've collected for everyone so far, but I'm always down with upgrading anything that somebody brings to me like that.

Thanks,
~Rx

EDIT:

Hey Gilles,

I'm going to get around to updating this thread with your links to the new skins and add any 4-in-1 images you've done that aren't up there already some time by mid-week next week (hopefully by the weekend)

Were you planning on making 4-in-1 previews and the B/W console images for the synopsis' for all the systems?  I'm hoping you were.  Of all the emus I've tested so far, I've remarked which ones still need the pics.

Hey madmab.  Sounds good to me.  Is this going to break all of my configs I have now?

EDIT:   I just took a look at Gilles new previews and they look GREAT!  I couldn't get them to work on my Box though.  I'm thinking I didn't get the beta that plays this yet, right?

Infedility....

Doesn't matter what the file name is as long as it's a png, so that's not your problem.  You probably aren't pointing to the right directory.  Make sure you're pointing to the "Screenshots" directory, and not the "Screenshots\NES" directory, or else it will be looking in "Screenshots\NES\NES" and you don't have any artwork there.

Man.... that's always been a confusing bitch of a thing for me to wrap my head around too.  I have no idea why it was implemented that way, seeing as how nothing else for the emus are.  I'm betting that this is your problem.

you kind of have me confused there with the directory comment

I know that my SCREENSHOT folder is on my E drive, so do i have to manulay edit the settings or something in the skin/emu itself?

Now for multiple boxart games, how would this work??

is it something like....

E/SCREENSHOTS/NES/SUPER MARIO BROS 1/pic.png
E/SCREENSHOTS/NES/SUPER MARIO BROS 2/pic.png

am i in the right direction??
Title: Madmab And Gilles' New Releases Thread
Post by: ressurectionx on April 29, 2009, 06:55:00 AM
You should just download the NES pack from my thread in the banner below and it will be all set up for you.

They would be like this:

E:\\SCREENSHOTS\NES\SUPER MARIO BROS I/0001.png
E:\\SCREENSHOTS\NES\SUPER MARIO BROS I/0002.png
E:\\SCREENSHOTS\NES\SUPER MARIO BROS I/0003.png
E:\\SCREENSHOTS\NES\SUPER MARIO BROS I/0004.png

You would point your emu to:

E:\\SCREENSHOTS\

Don't point your emu to:

E:\\SCREENSHOTS\NES\

The emu creates the "NES" directory on its own, so if you put it to the one I told you not to, it will look for the screenshots in:

E:\\SCREENSHOTS\NES\NES\ and obviously you won't have them there.

Just grab my pack and dump it into the screenshots folder like this and you'll be fine.

I understand that, but I feel that your missing my point

I've mentioned that I have working screenshots for my games

The problem is my boxart doesnt appear in the special spot off to the side of the skin

You have photo previews of the skin in action, and you have a screenshot of in-game play, AND the boxart of the game appearing off to the side of the skin

So again, I have working screenshots, but how can I also have my boxart appear, along with my screenshots?

I have no idea how to have 2 images on my skin at the same time. Your pack doesnt explain that, which makes it very confusing for newcomers to your skin. How can I have my boxart showup while having the regular screenshots show up???

Thank you smile.gif

also, all of my photos, screenshots & boxarts, are all png format

Hey infidelity
You can't have box art and screen shot viewed at the same time. It just doesn't work that way. Although it would be nice.

Hey madmab,
how far is this out of the question? To have boxart and screen shots viewed as a substitute (option) for those who don't have videos.

discrepancy...? huh.gif Hmm.
I am just talking about implementing the ability to view box/cart and screen shot at the same time. Opposed to, box/cart and video. or screenshot and video simultaneously. For those who don't have videos.

Since this is the most active Xport related conversation in all the world by the moment I have a quick question:

Are the Xport emulators running fine on 720p resolution?
I just found many topics from 2005 and 2006 saying that a lot of guys were not able to launch the Xport emus on 720p. I tried to find new replies but was not able. Today Mr. Blackbolt said on his XBMC Skinning topic that he runs the emulators on perfect sharp screen with no blur and no filters at all - at 720p!!! I am really eager to know more about!

I still don't get how a Genesis screen (320x240 * 2 = 640x480) can run as 1280x720 size --- inside, for example, a 1368x768 LCD television without any interpolation!!! GOD. The mathematics go mad in my head!

I mean, no slowdowns or problems in the games, right?

I'd still like for someone to figure out the best screen sizes for xports emu in 1080i. i get tired of people telling me to just use the 720p settings found online. I didnt pay over a grand for my lcd hd to play my emu's in 720p. If i can play them in 1080i, that's how i want to play them. I'm no good at math, if I was able to figure the screen setups out for myself, I obviously wouldnt be asking so many times.

Sorry for the rant. And thank you MadMab for telling me that the boxart feature isnt even available for the skins yet. I'm glad I can stop going crazy trying to get this going.

BB's making a program for me that will do the following....

Convert all of my 0001.png into the game name (the folder name) and put them all in a "Boxart" folder.

Then I can go in and do the same for 0002.png (title shot), 0003.png (action shot) & 0004.png (cart/cd/disk).

(I'm assuming we could do the same for 0005.png and up and put them in some sort of misc. folder for the games that I've included alternate artwork)

My intention here was so I could use a "file lister" program and create a database of known artwork.  That way, if anybody wanted to work on getting missing stuff down the road it would be easy to find out what is still needed.

Bonus is, I think it will make the artwork in the format that Gilles was talking about.  Personally, I can't imagine it would be harder/easier to code this either way, but now we will inadvertantly have an alternate pic-file-structure to work with.

What do you think madmab?

Use 1280x896 when running Genesis in 1080i.

EDIT: Some games, like Midnight Resistance uses 256x224 resolution, so in these games you need to change it 1024x896.

It's in one of the threads around here.  RessX wanted to go the boxart is 0001.png and cartart is 0004.png route, and Gillles suggested something else (I forget what), etc, etc.

Lol, I copy/paste my answer for those who have forget:

For the users without big hard drives, it would be cool to display a boxart AND a screenshot at the same time.
(like they are doing in a lot of pc frontends in fact) ph34r.gif

Yep! We need an Xport inverter!!
All the best emus of the world (mame, Zsnexbox...) and all the pc front ends are working with "boxart", "titles", and "screenshots" folders; unfortunatelly it's not the case of the Xport emus sad.gif .

Perheaps a coder out there could create a programm to convert all our "Xport screenshots" into "classic multi folders screenshots"

A programm that could convert:
Mario/0001.png, 0002.png, 003.png, 0004.png INTO
Boxarts/mario.png , Titles/mario.png ,Screenshots/mario.png , Carts/mario.png

Like this it would be SOOOOO MOOORE EASY :
- For the USERS, to display any screeenshots/boxarts/carts/titles in the desired order.
- For the CODER, to display what he want in the General User Interface

I don't know if such a wonderfull programm should be hard to create madmab? Peheaps Bomb bloke know how to programm such a thing?

Madmab answer:

I think I wrote a batch file to do this some time back. I'll have to dig around and see if I can find it. It had issues with directories with certain characters in their name (& comes to mind). But still makes for a good timesaver. I think two directories (one for screenshots and the other for boxart/cartart) ought to work just fine.

the Xports screenshots conventions aren't standard at all and cause us a lot of problems:

- For the USERS, to display any screeenshots/boxarts/carts/titles in the desired order.
- For the CODER, to display EASILLY what he want in the General User Interface

I really think you should join a batch program with your news releases to FINALLY have a "standard" screenshots/boxarts/titles conventions with separates screenshots/boxarts/titles/carts folderts like all the best emus of the world (mame, zsnexbox, pc front ends, etc...)easy compatable with all the screenshots/boxarts packs websites

Such a programm/batch file would be a dream to FINALLY GET RID of that annoying system (other than that the Xport/madmab edition emus are really perfect for me (and my friends))

I never thought this could be a change, but I like it just like I like the feature on Zsnexbox. smile.gif

Actually yes it is.  I've been working on this the last few days and having the files named a certain way and in the same directory of the screenshots was a bit of a pain.  To say the least.  laugh.gif

Drat if I woulda known BB was working on something it would have saved me some time and pain.  laugh.gif tongue.gif

Just a directory with a name like "BCart" (Box and Cart art) would be be good.  Then the user could just point to it... like E: or F:\BCart.  So the pictures would be in "userdrive:userdirectory\gamename\"  This will probably make another user specified directory name to store though.

Anyways it would be far easier to implement, although I've run into a little snag with the xbox not properly de-allocating memory..  sad.gif

On a side note I won't have to worry anymore about figuring out how to "autodetect" the boxart for systems where the boxes and carts are a little more "squarish".  laugh.gif

You won't be able to display two separate pieces of artwork until you get the new beta and you download the new NES artwork pack that isn't uploaded yet.  Otherwise, you're stuck with just the screenshots.

When the beta comes out you can show just one artwork, just movies, one artwork and movies, or two separate artworks.

The beta should be out soon.  Thank you for your patience.

1) Always, On the gameselect screen, if you press the right thumbstick right( max volume limit), the background music stop to play, and no way to play it again (unless you keep the right thumstick right for almost 10 seconds).

2) When you adjust the "set game screen size/position" and press the "X" button, you won't see the ingame screen while you are resizing the screen.

3) When you select a "pre made config, the previews are showing up, but...it's more slow than the previous build (like if the box was running out of memory), in the previous build, the scroll between the pre made configs was faster

4) Don't really know what happens here, but sometimes the movies simply stopped to work! I must delete the ini to show them again

1) stop deleting your .ini file.  laugh.gif  Actually this was happening after deleting the .ini file and changing the skin.  It is now fixed.

2) fixed.  Good 'ol cut -n- paste got me!

3) got it!

4) Still looking

Finally crushed a bug where the file filter was being set to "x".  This one drove me crazy for a long time!

Changed default skin name to "[gilou9999] Dynamic NES Skin", "[gilou9999] Dynamic PCE Skin", and "[gilou9999] Dynamic Lynx Skin" respectively.  That's the name I picked and I'm sticking to it!  tongue.gif

That just leaves #4 which I'm still not sure about.  But it would be nice to know what Gilles and megaman are doing before the movies stop.  Are you browsing around games, playing a game, browse some more, etc?

Hey RessX... The view text file help screen only displays while actually viewing a text file.  I modified the title bar so it is a little less misleading when selecting a text file.

Hey madmab.   If you say that the same problems sprung up for NES that did with TG16, there were a few more I mentioned that you didn't cover here.

1)  BGM Volume likes to reset itself when you start emu. Doesn't happen every time.  (But it is a real shock when you start the emu and have the volume of the TV up expecting the volume to stay at the lower setting you had it at)

2) Videos for CD's display when you have the folder highlighted. However, artwork only shows up when you have the actual CUE file highlighted. Sometimes, Videos stop showing up altogether.  (Guess this doesn't matter on the NES lol)

3) Skin and Skin Config Previews Don't Display in the artwork preview box.  (EDIT:  I see above that they did work, but slowly, for the NES.  They plain don't work for the TG16.)

(I guess I really haven't used the NES one too much yet since I was wrapping up the TG16 yesterday with pCe's new videos, so these may or may not be happening with the NES.  I just posted them here since you said in PM that the same issues crept into the most recent NES build).

Well.... now I need to think about adding a few new Japanese games after looking at Gilles synopsis for the TG16.   Hey Gilles, you don't know off hand the games I'm missing based off your synopsis, do you?

Oh..... and to answer your question about what I'm doing when the videos stop working (on the TG16), it seems to happen after I've been scrolling around checking artwork and videos for games.  All of the sudden I go from one game to the next and the video previews are gone.  Resetting the emu fixes this until it happens again.  Leaving the game select and returning doesn't fix it.  I'm not sure if they start up again if you play a game and exit (I didn't test that).

Yes, I will be uploading the converter program once I've used it and figure out if it works.  It's based off of .ini files, so I will have to make sure they are working too before I put it up here.

Although, I wouldn't recommend using them with old sets, since I've added images to practically every set since posting them on the main thread.

I'm going to make a real attempt to get the new NES set up before I go to bed tonight.

Later,
~Rx

I'll be getting new boxart up there for the TG16 when me and pCe have everything sorted out.  I thought that would be this weekend, but some things I read about games in Gilles synopsis has me thinking there may be more additions first (like the Japan Bonk games are noted as being different enough from their US counterparts to warrant some curiosity).

FDS games didn't run so slow they were not playable, or even that noticable to me.  Some people have mentioned that before, but it didn't bother me.  I'll have to try one out with the new build and see if there are any signifigant slowdown problems from when I originally tested them.

My movies are on my Box F:\Media\NES\Movies\

They stop working from the drive itself, so it doesn't surprise me if they did networked either way at this point.

EDIT:

I've just verified that the videos stop displaying from the drive on the NES as well.

I just went into the US games and scrolled down to the "E" games slow enough for the video to start on each one before I went on.  By the time I hit Excitebike they were gone.  (Entering the game and leaving doesn't work either.  The only way to get them back seems to be to leave the emu and come back).

~Rx

EDIT 2:

Okay.   I see the text help screen now.  Funny thing is, when you try to adjust the width of the text display it says "Do you want to use these settings globaly?   Selecting Yes will overwrite all existing Game Screen Size/Positions for all games".  Is this really linked to game screen size now, or is that a copy-paste mistake?

Also with the text.  Is there a way to get the word-wrap feature working?  I've never had any luck displaying a text document in XPORT's emulators without manually putting in line breaks myself.  They always go off the right side of the page no matter how much I fool with the settings.

I tried and tried to get the movies to stop, but they just don't wanna for me.  Maybe you guys are using ultra-hi-res boxscans that I'm not, who knows.  I just know I have the older set that RessX released.

Other than that, everything else should be fine and dandy now!

I haven't transfered any of the HD images over.   There may be one here or there that is larger than what you have, but nothing new on the image front that should be causing this.  This problem was not occuring several releases ago towards the end of May.

Are you testing it in debug mode, or in the actual working emu?
Title: Madmab And Gilles' New Releases Thread
Post by: ressurectionx on June 08, 2009, 09:17:00 AM
When I scrolled through and it happens, I am pausing long enough to see the video play.  You said above you stayed long enough to see the boxart.  (Maybe if you put the emu to show screenshots while scrolling it will happen to you too).

~Rx

EDIT:  Just tested it out in the new beta and it did it again to me.  This time I just went straight to the US games and scrolled slowly down to Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and then there were no more videos until I exited the emu and came back.

I'd try it with the screenshots "ON" during scrolling and see if it happens to you too.  Remember to wait until the video has started playing.

Cool man.

How'd you finally get it to happen?

EDIT:  Hey Gilles.  I'm also done editing the TG16 synopsis for now.  I'm going to upload it later today and put it in the hotpotato thread.

Also, I changed my ~FULL TILT Skin configuration.  I think it looks awesome now.   I'm going to upload that to you too.  In the future when making skin previews, could you use the new config for the shots?

Thanks!

1) Yeah, that tg16/pce synopsis was a bitch to complete (there's not many website with good reviews/synopsis for all the obscure games on this system. It worked well for you ressX? I mean, it showed synopsis for a lot of your roms, or you have to add a lot of crc's into the synopsis.txt?

2) For the full tilt, send it to me tomorrow, i will give you all the link to the 2 updated tg16 and pce dynamic skins (with pre made previews; and all the 4/3 settings updated for the tg16 skin (tg16 boxarts aren't exactly the same size as the pce boxarts))

3) About the "movies suddenly stop working bug", it hadn't appened to me with the new beta yet; but perheaps i'm lucky (it happened to me with the previous one). I'm running the beta in both sdtv and in my hdtv (720p), i always set "show screenshot while scrolling to "no" since years! (more fluid, more fast to scroll through your roms), i always use personnal HQ boxarts for all the systems (HQ boxarts i dl on the xbox emulation repository years ago), my boxarts are 300kb max in general wich means (400~500 pixels max IT LOOKS FANTASTIC on a hdtv!)

1)  Yeah... it worked great.  I re-arranged them to be in the order by category that my spreadsheets are, just like I've got all the other synopsis'.  I also did a little light editing here and there.  And I added about 15 CRC's.  Overall it had most of my stuff.

2)  Cool.

3)  Madmab hasn't gotten back to me yet, but I suspect it's because I have so many games in one folder.  It wasn't a problem before, but it may be a problem now.  I think Madmab splits up games by letter so he wouldn't have seen it.  I don't know how you set yours up, but I suspect you have many less roms than I do and prefer to just put the "best" on your system.  This would explain why you aren't seeing the problem and why madmab wasn't seeing it before, if that's true.

Haha!  That's what I figured.

I'm betting that's where the problem lies.  Just waiting to see what madmab had to do to get the problem to surface.

I plan on making it very easy to get to the best stuff when all is said and done.  All of the rest of the stuff will be there waiting for the more adventurous types to discover  cool.gif

The screenshot directory and the enhanced media folder are defaulting to NES in the PCE emulator.

My guess is Madmab just imported the changes from Mednafenx_NES to Mendafenx_PCE and forgot to change some things.

Aside from that it works pretty awesome! My crash bug is gone!

Huh.... I didn't notice that myself, but I also wasn't using a fresh emu since I've just been dropping the new default.xbe over the old one every time.

Perhaps this is the result of a fresh perspective that none of us would have seen had we not ever bothered to start the emu from scratch with the newest build?

QUOTE
when launching the games the screen is zoomed in so far that is only displays the upper left hand corner of the screen and the color is all jacked up and the colors are inverted with green LCD like pixels all over the place.

and this is without touchin any setting... started from scratch with no ini settings.

doesnt help if i try and adjust the screen size or change the resolution.

Now I didn't see this problem at all either, and thought at first that maybe he was doing something wrong, but the more I think about it this could be due to a new setup without our personal configs at work.

I'll test that theory in a few days if nobody else looks at it.  I never thought to start from scratch and make sure everything works until now.

1) The screenshot directory and the enhanced media folder are defaulting to NES in the PCE emulator.

Gilles mentioned this but I have no clue what is going on.  I just tried loading my latest compile after deleting the default .ini file from "e:\settings\mednafen_pce\" and it defaulted screenshots to "e:\screenshots" and media to "e:\media".
yes it defaults to those directories, but it creates "e:\screenshots\NES" and "e:\media\NES" instead of "e:\screenshots\PCE" and "e:\media\PCE".

I even redownloaded the last one I sent you (dated 6/9/09) and still no issues.

2) when launching the games the screen is zoomed in so far that is only displays the upper left hand corner of the screen and the color is all jacked up and the colors are inverted with green LCD like pixels all over the place.

I've only tried two roms.... both were US games and I didn't see anything odd.  Even after deleting the .ini like above and trying with both versions.

So I guess the only questions are..

Does he have the right version (6/6/09)?
Yes thats the version i'm running.
What resolution is he running at?  I typically use 720p.
Ive tried 720p and 480p and the same result on both
What game is he trying to play that is doing this.
It happens on every game I try. Its almost as if it was trying to output VGA over Component or something. I'll take a pic of it when I get home.

Other than that they only thing I can think of is to delete the configuration file.  Also keep in mind that if he is using your save settings (which I think you provided) it's gonna use whatever screen settings you had that game set for on your TV.  Although I would typically think that would not cause anything he described (except for the zoomed in part).
Originally I had just replaced the .XBE and kept all of my previous settings. It looked all scrambled so I cleared the .ini's and its still happening.

I will test it out on my other xbox after I get home from work tonight.

I have 2 boxes both running @720p... a 64MB and a 128MB.

*EDIT*
If you need to me to test anything let me know.

Ok I recieved the latest build with the latest skin from gilles999 and its pretty damn impressive!

All of the bugs I was experiencing are gone.

I do have a question though...

In the previous build I recieved (the buggy one) I could place my movies in E:\Media\PCE\Movies and they would work. But now it seems as if only the artwork is read from E:\Media\PCE\Artwork and I'm forced to use D:\Movies.

Was this changed on purpose? I liked the E:\Media dir being the place for all of the RXtras.

I have a bug that might be in the Madmab edition as well.  There seems to be a bug in the public mednafnex-nes build.  My little sister was playing some games and when she went to the in-game menu she accidentally left clicked a few times and the music control menu came up a few times (as many times as she clicked).  Anyway, I had to push B to back out of each menu individually.  I was just wondering if this bug is still in the madmab edition build.  If so, could you look into it Madmab?  Thanks.

Hey pCe,

Right now my NES media folder looks like this....

\Artwork\
\Game Faqs\
\Manuals\
\Movies\
\Roms\
\Saves\
\Strategy Guides\

Yes.... I even have the Roms and Saves in this folder now!  Can't remember if there is a trick now to get the movies to display from Media\Movies\, but I got them working just fine there.

Pretty much the only thing not in the Media directory for me anymore on any of my emulators is the Emulator folders and skins themselves.

Xmodder deluX,

I'm pretty sure that was removed.  I've never seen that happen, but if madmab saw it he surely would have fixed something like that.  We'll have to wait and see what he says about it.

Go to the setting in "Change Default Directories" that says "Media Directory".

Select "F:\Media"

It will ask you "Point the movie directory to Media\Movies?"

Select Yes

If your TG16 Movies were in "F:\Media\PCE\Movies" it will work perfect.

My 128MB box has the larger HDD and stuff in it, but thats in the other room and I have people visiting from out of town. They watch kids crap on it so I can't just take it from the room dry.gif

All my roms are stored on my server and shared via SAMBA. So I only need space to hold the videos and 6GB covers that nicely. And if I wanted I could just set the videos to SAMBA or RELAX too.

ARE YOU ALL SEEING THIS PROBLEM!!!?

Seriously, I still have not experienced this bug yet.  Good for me, right?

Well, good for a sane person anyways.  I can't give any input about it if I can't experience it.

Did you get my PM's man?  I re-wrapped up Gilles skin/emu packages with some minor fixes.

I also:

1) Added in 2 or 3 Static Skins in them so Gilles could make skin preview images for them to work when you're choosing a skin.

2)  Deleted any thumbnail images that always seem to creep back in there when Gilles releases a skin update....  jester.gif

3)  Capitalized All Words in the file names (mostly images) that Gilles had in small letters.  I also changed things like "text help 2" to "Text Help II" (I know there's not a text help pic, I'm paraphrasing because I'm not by my Box-PC).

4) Changed the name of the skin directories to the format I have settled on about 2 months ago.  (I hope this one is alright with you Gilles... I wanted to get to that point before on these with you, but our work on these things veered so far apart from each other a while back)

5)  I have integrated all of Gilles new pics and configs onto my own box, and decided that for now I will treat his prefered Synopsis style as the default (It's kind of grown on me, actually).

So... right there, you both have the NES emu/skin setup that I have, folder for folder and file for file.

We really need to concern ourselves with getting all of this stuff in sync with each other now.  I will hopefully be hosting torrents somewhere in the near future on NES and TG16 with my exact setups.  Kind of like BP's 4.5GB setup is meant to play on one DVD, my setup will be designed to play from a large hard drive.  Eventually my hope is to have a place where people could just FTP the files they want from an online mirror of my own Box, because a lot of the configuration stuff like the favorites lists will demand that people have their roms in the same place on their drive that I do (unless madmab finds some wizardry around that.... but I don't really think that's possible)

(Disclaimer.... As per forum rules, I will never reveal to anyone here in a post or a PM where these are torrented, when and if they are)

Gilles,

I need you to take a look at those missing/incorrect images.  There are only about 5 to 7 of them that are still needed between the PCE,TG16 and NES skins.  About 5 to 7 more if you include Previews for the Static Skins I included.  (I think it's important to have some good static skins from before included, not only to show their limitations compared to the Dynamic Skins, but also to possibly encourage somebody to update them.  I would LOVE seeing a Dynamic Skin version of the two SMB skins and the Bonk one someday!)

Don't forget to add the new preview images for the updated ~FULL TILT Skin Preview.  I'm really proud of that one.  Words cannot express how good the emus now look on my TV with the Madmab Edition emu upgrade, Gilles' Dynamic Skins and thousands of videos and high quality Boxart as I slowly scroll through my games just admiring the fruits of our labor.

Don't it feel good to give it all away for free too?

Been great working with you guys,
~Rx

Sadly, you won't be able to use .CUT files on your setup if you are using the network share.

Removing that was the biggest-ticket-item for cutting the load times for .CUT files straight from XBMC in half (from 15 to 8 seconds).

Seriously man.  I know shit's tight with financing now, but newegg.com has 500 GB hard drives for 60 bucks or less with free shipping now.  You should do yourself the favor of having one box that can have all of this stuff with about 50 PSX games and still have room to have XBox games on the drive.  It's totally worth it.

If I like a game enough to launch it directly from XBMC I have no problem putting it on my XBOX.

As for the HDD... I'm going to setup a RAID array on my server and that should free up a few drives. I have 3TB total combined among 6 drives on my server currently. When I get my new drives I'll be adding a few 1.5TB SATA drives and pulling some old IDE's.

But as of now I'm only testing so I should be fine  wink.gif

Cool man.  If you want to do it manually, I definatly know you have the skills to.  It's just such a pain in the ass in my book.  Network share was great when 200 MB drives cost 200 bucks but I can totally do without it now for emus.  I do use it for Movies and TV shows though and it's great for that if you don't have 1080 HD stuff.

LOL... I recycle drives in XBoxes too.  It's just now I'm hating the two Xboxes that have 120 and 180 GB in them because to me they're as useless as the 8GB drive.

I've got 6 XBoxes right now.  I only work on one and have the other set up as a debug box for now.  When we get all this stuff done I'm going to get a bunch of 750 MB drives off of newegg and start hooking everyone I know up with these as birthday presents.

Hey madmab,

I've been doing a ton of testing and working on the Atari 2600 synopsis and spreadsheets today.  I plan on fufilling a long time goal of yours and finally sorting out the 2600 stuff.

Sweet, smile.gif i was wonder about the Atari 2600...

Hey Gilles,
I tried some of the rumbles for nes.
I noticed in "super mario 2", using the rumble, it takes away a health point right when I start the game, and every time I get a health point (like a heart or a mushroom) the added health goes away, right away. This is an energy rumble, right? It only rumbles when I gain or loose energy, I'm guess...

Could you check this out for me?

Thanks

Yeah..... but does it REALLY support paddles?  There actually is a lot of paddle games, but I can't get them to play right.  There are a few that have been converted to Joystick like the Atari Circus game but anybody down for a good ole' fashioned game of Beat 'em and Eat 'em is just plain out of luck.   cool.gif

Atariage.com does a good job pointing out which games use each controller.  I'm putting all of that in the synopsis so whenever we have the sort/filter feature you'll be able to sort by controller and see which ones use which.

Later,

EDIT:

Man.... Now I know why I waited so long to work on Atari 2600.  What a freakin mess.  5 different names for some games since every company who ripped off the game made their own title for it.

Synopsis is over 600k so far, with all the alternate names I've figured out posted in the headline info.  About 90% of the games so far have synopsis' now.

I think I may have discovered some unique games that weren't released in the US that I missed too.  I imagine I'll be working on this one for a while.

It will be soon.  We've experienced a few bugs and technical difficulties.  I know we've been teasing it out there for a while, but it really shouldn't be long now.

It will be worth the wait  cool.gif

Gilles seems pretty adamant on using MaGiRx instead of MGRx.  That's cool.  I think whatever way we do it MM? should have some recognition too for all of his previous help plus the Cheat Code database he's working on now.

Since the "?" doesn't work with file names, I was thinking MaGiRxQ or MGRxQ.  Any ideas?

Gee thanks Rx, smile.gif
Maybe Gilles and Madmab aren't aware that, along with the suggestions, testing and overall lingering I have done with the project, that I also probably made more than 700 videos, personally for the Xtras, (and counting) along with the alt-dats, synopsis work, cheat data base, plus my hunting and gathering of a ton of crap. tongue.gif

I don't want to push my self on anyone, but I have put in countless hours into this project. Some kind of recognition like this would be nice. It will probably (superficially) motivate me to just help out even more in the future of course. rolleyes.gif like I said, I don't want to step on anyone's toes, I know there have been other helpers here and there, but my efforts into this project and time, must be getting up there and/or equaling that of your own, gentle men.

"Q" seems nonchalant enough biggrin.gif
And hey...
MaGiRxQ... that is no worse than "mednafen" laugh.gif What the hell does that mean anyway...?
Unless you want to make a completely different style name all together, say... one that is more ambiguous, like "Project Awesome" tongue.gif

All right.. enough of this crap.

yep a team name should be cool
At least we have a "project name": mednafenX nes -madmab edition-
It's the name of the project since the begining and it's show in the splash screen.
Madmab is the boss and the one who started it all
Don't worry megaman(?) it's been months you are credited in the official readme (as well as franckmorris, crash1235, pceslayer, and the others of course).

For a team name? I suggest something like "Team green Dick X"
sounds cool?

Mega_Man_(?) for being crazy enough too volunteer to enter tons of gamegenie codes.  Only (#-J) right now.

Thanks to all involved for doing the missing movie previews and filling out the Synopsis for the NES.  Rx, Gilles, Justgoonies, and Mega_Man_(?).

These were NES only.  Has PceSlayer been doing stuff?  Or is he working on TG16 at the moment?

Yes RessX those 2600 games are full of clones under different names and just because a file has a (!) in the goodset doesn't mean it's a functional one.  laugh.gif  If you go to www.atarimania.com and look in their database I think they actually distinguish between what is the original and what is not.  I think the set I have on my Xbox has about 98% of the junk filtered out.

To answer the question about being on the front news on release.  Yes it will be there.  I know I keep on saying thist but anyways I had some PC issues over the weekend that took up most of my time.  So I was pretty much busy tweaking around in the registry so I could get windows updates to run, and then had to uninstall and re-install a bunch of stuff, then that screwed up the media center so I had to back out of it's update.  What a headache.   blink.gif

So yeah whenever I can get back to the code and fix those few lingering changing screenshots issues it should be out.

pCe and I wrapped up the TG16 stuff already (we didn't do cheatcodes, so I don't know if he's going to do them or not.... he never said to me he would), and Gilles did the synopsis.  (Still need to add the CD games, but since we haven't figured out how to get the emu to use them without the CRCs it's a moot point right now anyways).

Yeah... Those 2600 games are a freakin mess.  I did a lot with them before, so I had a great base to start with.  I've eliminated a lot more clones this second time as well.  I know there is some good hacks out there like Combat AI and Combat Rock, but I don't think I'm going to find the patience to go through 11,000 roms in the goodset to find them.  Maybe when you want to take a break from coding you could take a look at my list and see if I'm missing anything good that you have in your set.

2600 Synopsis nearly complete!

~Rx

EDIT:  There probably won't be too many videos that need making when I'm done here.  I'm still going to do some searching for some cool hacks and other stuff I missed, but I really reduced the number of games by weeding out the clones.

Any 2600 fans have any suggestions for additions that I missed?

EDIT 2:  I'm adding a lot of self-published and XYPE games to the Xtras as well.  Lots of great stuff there that has been created in the last few years.

Hey madmab.... I really need to get the text viewer fixed.

Is there a way that you can adjust how wide you want the screen to be before it "word-wraps"?

Adjusting the width of simulated fixed-width font, (according to Gilles help image) does nothing but black over any text towards the right edge.  It does nothing to actually adjust the word-wrap.

Also.... do you know if there is a way to get "Courier New" as the TXT font (or something similar that every character is the same width?  That way if people made images using Ascii text, it will show up correctly.

PLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLEASE HELP!  This thing has been driving me crazy for a year now.

I propose you get cracking on the synopsis work or doing some data entry for the Game Genie Database so MM? can get back to making movies for the project.  If you had started doing some of the work you could have had beta updates months ago.

Love what you're doing with the cheat codes MM... but I sure miss your help with the videos.  Fortunately Stupot1 and pCeSlAyEr have been cranking out vids in your absence.  Aside from the vids that stupot is always making for additions to he NES library, now stupot1 wants to make vids for Commodore 64 (a project I might not support since it would require an insanely LARGE amount of work configuring the controllers), and I'm not sure if pCeSlAyEr is taking a break or if he's done creating videos now that the TG16/CD work is done.

Until Gilles made the Dynamic Skin for it, I don't believe it even had a skin.  All you're seeing is a black screen, right?

You can download Gilles Dynamic skin and it should work well enough to play games for you.  It will be a while before Madmab gets a public beta of the update for that system out there.  Still a lot to do on that one.

I have been following this project off and on since it started, but I'm still a little confused on one thing:  Do you have to have a new release of all of these emu's for the dynamic skins to work?  Or do they work in all existing ports?  If they only work in new releases, is there any kinda timeline of when the might get released?
Title: Madmab And Gilles' New Releases Thread

Though there has been development on 15 of XPORT's emulators, NES is the only planned public beta at this time.  I think we'll need a lot more community effort before the other stuff starts going public.  Everyone seems to really want the betas, but a majority of those people don't want to help out with the project to make things go along faster.

Anyways, I believe madmab and Gilles are ready for the NES release now, but it's on hold until I can fix and finish updating the synopsis.  I'm hoping to have that done by Saturday.

Hopefully the release inspires some more much needed help in here.  Some of the people making videos have dropped off the project and it's pretty much just Stupot1 and pCe making videos now when they have the opportunity.  I was really hoping that we'd have at least 4 or 5 people working together to wrap up the GB/GBC/GBA videos.  In the scheme of things, there really isn't that much more video work to be done compared to what's already complete, it just seems like a lot since there are only a few who have taken it upon themselves to shoulder that burden for the rest of the community.

Just know as much patience you've had to show for this beta I've had to show much more trying to get people to help out with the project.

Hey there guybird, long time no see.  I was wondering what you've been up to.

The dynamic skins can be used in currently released x-port emulators.  But none of the "dual preview" features will be available.  Nor is the "load/save skin configuration".  All of that is specific to the code changes I've made so far.

At the moment we are kinda playing it by ear.  I'd like to at least get a few more "interface" related changes in first before beginning releases.  Although I've been steadily working on porting each old emu over.  Unfortunately there have been a number of issues causing delays.  Some due to unforseen bugs, others due to real life interference.  So no, there really isn't any "timeline" so to speak.  It's just one of those beasts where just when you think you got it done some new ideas present themselves...

Well if the nes beta ever comes out I might start helping out with the project.

Actually man, quite a few people who haven't even helped with the project have had the NES beta at the invite only forum for a few weeks now to kick around for some extra beta testing.  It's almost exclusively been your attitude which has kept it from being released at the usual place for everyone at XBscene while we worked out more bugs.

It's comments like this that make me want to postpone it another few weeks, and after that comment it definitely would be if it were my project and my decision.

No... I don't believe for a second that you'll help out with the project when it's released.  You've been told time and time again that if you helped out that you'd already have a beta for more than a few months now and you haven't contributed anything except a smart ass comment every couple of weeks.  When you've been told that you have to work for it, you disappear and never reply to those posts.  So... I'm calling you on your bullshit.  I wouldn't normally talk to somebody like this on here, but I'm under no illusion that you will ever find a way to make yourself useful around here so I really don't care much about what you think about me.

The only reason I want the beta to finally be released here now is to put an end to your whining and selfishness.

I appreciate your reply there TM3.  Good show.

I also saw you made a few icons in the wide icon thread.  Certainly not enough to garner a free peak at this point, but your actions have been enough for me to not feel any hostility towards you at this moment.

To answer everyone's question about the NES release, it should be within the next 7 days.  Hopefully the next 3 or 4 if I can kick some ass on this synopsis thing.

Madmab and Gilles are ready, and Mega_Man_(?) is finished adding all the official Game Genie codes (to the best of my knowledge).  I just need to clean up and update the NES synopsis.  I want it to work right when this comes out and there are still hundreds of games I need to add/fix.

There will probably be some CRCs that aren't picked up still with roms used outside of my personal set (which I want people to tell me about and mention the CRC of the rom that isn't working), but if you can get the roms in my new datfiles that I will add to the package when it's ready you shouldn't have any problems with it.

After the beta comes out, if you really want to help when it's done, we have a few hundred Gameboy videos to work on (Stupot1 and pCeSlAyEr are working on them now).  I'm sure when you see the beta you'll see the value and importance of having a video for every game included in the Xtras/dats.

Trust me... the wait was worth it.  Just a few more days.

Meh.... it's just the changing of the season....

That and the same old story of the same ol' shit...

Nobody knows about this yet.

I'm telling you man, between all of our combined work this is something amazing.  Just don't go taking your own work for granted and that of the team's.

In any marketing, you can never expect to get anyone to sign on more than about 2% of the time.  That's why it's a bitch of a business.  I think with the help we've gotten so far it's been at least that.  If your beta's were our the whole time, I don't think we'd even get that much help.

Been some pretty cool folk up in here.  That's why I like this site more than the other place.  I know I can't say whatever I want to here, but there definately is a much larger base and nobody on the other site has helped us out physically on anything like they have here.

I just attribute this to most people being lazy and the weather being nice.  Even lazy people will help out when it's 20 below again.

And likewise, the only reason I've kept up with this publically is because of the work you've shown you can do and what we've been talking about.  That and the other people helping making videos and such.  I really don't want to be doing this until I'm 50 and you guys are making sure that doesn't happen.  Glad to give away my work for that....

I have been "off the grid" for the last, jeez, 7 months because of the job I had.  Lots of time out of town, getting up at 3 in the morning, etc.  Didn't really leave much free time for stuff like this.  Now I'm enjoying unemployment for a bit, and have some time to invest in this kinda thing again.  Unfortunately, my XMugen revival site and supporters kinda disappeared, probably due to me not being around.

Dunno if you hear it much here, but I know I really appreciate what you guys are doing, and I'm sure plenty of others do too.  I've tried for years to get something like this made (crc based info, dual previews etc) but could never convince Xport to do it.   I need to finish getting all the ResXtras so I can get my rom sets straightened out, and maybe be in a position to help you guys out.

Yeah.... I know you had a lot to do with the scene Guybird.  I was around long enough to see the repository before it went kaput and read a cool article that I think you wrote about how to make rumbles for XPORT games.  (You don't still have that anywhere BTW... do you?)

I wasn't trying to be a bastard to you specifically in that reply earlier, so I apologize if I came off that way.  I know you've done your share of work around here.  It was more a blanket statement and venting my frustrations a bit.  Sometimes I just can't believe that more people haven't jumped on this project while we're here working on it and making great improvements.  We're not going to be around forever doing this, so it would be nice to have more helpers to get the work done while we are.

Sorry to hear you're sitting on unemployment now.  I know this ain't the best time to be there.  I do look forward to anything you've got going here in the future though.

Yeah... on the NES synopsis I've still got around 500 US games to go through.

Europe, Japan and Translations are basically done (with a few stragglers I need to get finished)

About half of the prototypes are done.  I need to see if I can find a site with information on the more rare and obscure ones, or there will be quite a few of them with "No information available online for this game".

FDS is probably more than half done, but I haven't cleaned them up at all.

I haven't even started the hacks yet.

Right now the document is 1,964, just shy of the 2MB mark.  I'm guessing it will be 2.25MB or so when it's completed.... maybe a bit more.

I've REALLY cleaned it up.   It definately needed a final edit (although it won't be truly final until the sort/filter feature is working and I get the rest of the headline stuff done, mainly the # of players and Genre fields).

I had to replace about 50% or more of the work that people here have done since a lot of entries didn't have the website URL on them or other sites were used before ConsoleClassix (which has the best info for synopsis by far).  That's what's taking so long with the US stuff.

I hope to get it all done in 3 days or so.

Then I will integrate it into the pack you sent me madmab and see if any images are missing from that or if there needs to be any slight editing to file names here or there.

Then we're all set...  cool.gif

Yep....

Probably be adding a few more cool games like a Chinese pirate of Final Fantasy VII converted to NES and a Chrono Trigger pirate.

I'm pretty much done making the synopsis.  I just have to now re-arrange all the roms to their proper categories since I had a lot of them in the wrong spot.  Once I get that done, I will go through one by one and make sure that the synopsis works if you have the roms I've got.

Then I'm going to make sure everything is good with Madmab/Gilles pack, add the synopsis and it should be good to go.  Hope to have it done by Sunday at the latest.

Then it's off to updating the artwork again and putting Gilles "generic" boxarts on the games that don't have boxart.

From my understanding (its been about 3 years since I talked to him)  he was willing to release parts of his code to emu authors.  Not all the source, and certainly not the complete core.  I do think that getting enough code to re-port it to the xbox is in the realm of possibility or I wouldn't of mentioned it.

My favor may be enough to get the ball rolling with a programmer of enough "street cred" as I definitely wouldn't be involved in porting at this time(I'm  working on some other personal projects).  I think that may be the edge that X-port might not of had, but I don't know what or how X-port might of asked and why he was rejected.

Well considering the amount of emu's x-port has "ported" over to the xbox.  I would say that he has the most experience.   unsure.gif  Although he is nowhere near as active on the xbox as he used to be..

As for me... outside of updating cores and importing specific sections of emu code on x-port's emu's.  I have not really done any direct "ports".

Nes6502 has ported "snes9xbox" and some other stuff?  Did he do all the Doom, Heretic, Hexen, Descent, Quake 3, and stuff?  I honestly don't remember who did those.

There may be a couple more oddball emu's out there but I don't remember off the top of my head.

Nes6502 has ported "snes9xbox" and some other stuff?  Did he do all the Doom, Heretic, Hexen, Descent, Quake 3, and stuff?  I honestly don't remember who did those.

A600 did Heretic, Hexen, & Descent.   biggrin.gif
