StepmaniaX - Stepmania for XBox - v10

What's New :

 - Core updated to Stepmania 3.9 Final

 - SM-LAN support (see instructions below)

 - Better support for running from a DVD (see below)

 - Should be able to accommodate around 700-1000+ songs depending on how
   large the stepfiles are and on how many extra themes you have installed.  
   I tested it with 700 average-sized songs and there was still enough space
   for another few hundred.  I imagine this will be sufficient for 99% of the
   people out there.  If you're part of that 1% with 239873298324 song files
   and claim to like/play all of them, then pick up a 128MB XBox.


Important Notes
===============

There have been some miscellaneous updates since v5 and I can't
remember what those were or what version numbers they were, so
I've just jumped to v10 to avoid any confusion as to what's the
most recent version.

I started over from scratch with the 3.9 Final sources.  All of the
previous XBox-specific updates were already merged into the main codebase.
There were some new alterations that needed to be made to get the XBox
version working.  The full source should be in a separate package alongside
this distribution.  If someone on the official Stepmania team could update
the main codebase with these changes, that would be great.


Movies
------

Nope, sorry.  I had something almost working, but the additional code chewed
up about 15MB of memory which is better used for song storage.  Since it
was using up so much memory and it wasn't working anyway, I decided to just
abandon it.  


Themes/Characters/Announcers/Etc Packages
-----------------------------------------

Place your SMZIP files in the PACKAGES directory just like you would on
the PC version of Stepmania.



DVD Support
-----------

All of the files that Stepmania writes will now be written to one location:

E:\SAVES\STEPMANIAX

All the cache files, configuration data, scores, profiles, etc will be written
there.  This means that you should be able to just unpack this distribution
to a directory, add songs to the SONGS directory, burn it to an XBox-compatible
disc, and be good to go.  I have not tested it myself yet - I'm sure I'll hear
about it if it does not work.



SM-LAN Support
--------------

The first time you run StepmaniaX, it will create the following file:

E:\SAVES\STEPMANIAX\NETWORK.INI

To play over a network, edit this file in the following way:

To connect to someone else's Stepmania-LAN server use these settings:

[Network]
Enabled=1
Server=###.###.###.###

Where "###.###.###.###" is the IP address of your friend's Stepmania-LAN Server.

To have your XBox be a Stepmania-LAN server so that other people can connect to it,
use these settings:

[Network]
Enabled=1
Server=127.0.0.1

Setting the Server to 127.0.0.1 tells StepmaniaX that your XBox is to be the server.


To start the PC version of Stepmania so that it will act as a server, do this:

stepmania.exe --runserver=myservername --netip=127.0.0.1

To start the PC version of Stepmania so that it will act as client, do this:

stepmania.exe --netip=192.168.1.10

Where 192.168.1.10 is the IP address of the Stepmania server you wish to join.

I recommend trying to establish a connection between the XBox version and the
Windows version running on your home PC.  Once you've got the particulars down
for a basic connection, you can try something more sophisticated like an Internet
connection.

What is a 128 MB xbox....im assumeing its talking about the ram...did MS increase ii with 1.6b  or are u talking about soldering it on yourself?

And could someone with alot of songs please make a torrent or just contact me.  Thanks

I know this is probably a stupid question but i thought stepmania has xbox support built in to it or somthing........ ok i just read the site and i guess theyve stopped doing that i clearly remember getting my version from the offical site. either that or my years of drug use has severly damaged my long term memory

I would say the latter rather than the former seeing as like most homebrew apps for the Xbox, this was compiled with the MS XDK...which to the average layperson means for the most part, developers are only going to distribute something like this at the "usual places" for fear of facing the wrath of MS.

In other news, great job XPort, can't wait to give it a try!

Please add gif/jpg support (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

gifs lock up StepmaniaX completely, and jpgs show up as the transparent hot pink color.

Otherwise, this (minus the video comment) is a perfect port of 3.9F.

In what way? I have found that I can not map to the white or black buttons, or even to a USB keyboard.



I was going to edit my last post but I figured it was worthy of another... random lockups when backing out of a song in progress, and random lockups in jukebox mode.


Still a much better version, if even JUST for the smzip support. No more FATX worries. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

re: patching the SM codebase with the fixes
Sadly, the 3.9 branch is frozen, so any patches would have to go towards the new 4.0 CVS. I'll see what I can do about adding them though. Hopefully things won't break. :x

re: the random lockups - does it happen on every song or just on certain ones?  Have you looked at the log file it generates after a crash?  (log.txt or info.txt - it will either be where your XBE file is located or it will be in e:\saves\stepmaniax).  Did you change any of the graphics settings?  (Like enabling 32bit texturing or increasing the texture size or toggling the display of banners or whether banners are held in memory.)

If it's just for specific songs, please upload the entire song package somewhere so that I can investigate.

i loaded some characters and they work, but if you don't play right away, and it goes to the demo screen/ how to play stuff ... it always crashes.  I think it has to do with the png files of the dance pad or something with the dancepad in general.   But, Characters seem to work just fine!

It physically "doesn't" crash, it just sits there on a black screen (when it's doing the transition), so I assume it crashed (I mean I leave it there for a good minute at least). It never happens on the same song, as I can reboot it and it'll be fine again. The only thing that isn't random is the songs that have a .gif banner (damn you japanese simfile makers). As soon as you scroll to said song, before the banner cache can even load, the music begins to loop (similar to the transition into select music), and never stops.

I have played with the graphics settings a bit, but I also went ahead and deleted the ini from the saves folder, and leaving the default settings doesn't really help the crashes.

My exact XBE filepath is F:\Games\Stepmania\default.xbe.

I'll test out it some more later today in about 8 hours from now, but I at least want jpg/gifs to work. I don't want to go and convert everyones work I have accumulated, yet I want to be able to play their stuff.

Thanks for the update. While it sounds like movies are out of the question, I'd like to quickly ask about your findings. I don't quite understand how SM deals with memory, but is it possible at all to have an option to enable movies with a smaller song list or less themes/characters or something? I would understand that the game needs only 1 mp3 in memory at once...so if the remaining memory was > 15Mb would movies not work then?

Provide links to the exact character packages you have installed.  If you can't remember where they came from, you need to upload them someplace so I can test.

You didn't mention looking at the log.txt or info.txt files.  These would contain useful information after it black-screens like that and you have to reboot.

Xport, here is a link to the characters. http://www.andrewarsenault.com/ym_ccr/   These characters work, but it crashes at (right before) the how to play screen.  ( I think it has to do with the dance pad .png's)  It just goes black and then instead of going to the how to play sceen, it crashes with a black screen.... I did take the time to upload other characters from http://www.stepmania.com/download.php?file...s_DancePC.smzip  ... None of these worked.   It will load about a second of the song and play like a broken record, and the screen is black.  This isn't a huge problem with the characters that do work, it's just that sometimes i have to sit for a minute before i can jump up and play again lol ... which causes it to crash.  I'll upload the log files, but i'm not really sure where to upload them to.  just let me know.  One other question.  do you know if uploading stuff to their respective directories is more memory intensive than just using the .smzip packages?  Thanks again for all the ports

Please point me to where I can get one of the gif banners that freezes for you.  I made a couple of GIFs and they work for me, so I'll need the exact files you're using.

You can upload them to some free-hosting service like megaupload or something similar.

re:upload - see above.  Using smzip packages makes loading a little slower.  The memory usage remains the same for either.

Im getting crashes on loading songs from smzips at the start, so i have got it down to 20 songs. (80's mix) and most of them crash, hang on a black stage just after it says STAGE ONE. Backgrounds are off. Pal is set to 1. (im uk). Here is the log.

I have an  SMZIP of the DDR collection 1- 10 mix. But it wont load them at the start.
I really want an XBOX in my DDR cabinet, and not a PC. So any help would be greatfull.

Um.... i have a 128 board in my xbox and it locks up as soon as i pick a song list (JUST like all the other versions of stepmaniaX) i thought this version has support for a 128mb xbox ...or did i miss somthing?

I have a couple quick questions.

1) Does this work with the official Pump it Up (for Pump mode) pad?  If so do I just try it, or do I have to specifically configure it?
2) Are the background movies a work in progress?

I haven't been able to play it though.
It crashes as soon as my announcers says First stage :-/
Although, I see the improvenmts, it more responsive.

I think the problem is my characters, I'll turn them off and see what happens, although it a good bug to look at.

Hi guys, sadly stepmania doesn't work for me, I've got two consoles each with the 128 MB Ram Upgrade, SmartXX v3 and ind-bios 5003, both xboxes are 1.0, i have not flashed any other bios on the smartxx because I never have a problem with a emu before, so i think its not something the ind-bios is causing. first i tried with too many songs on it but it didn't work, so i started to delete songs, then it loaded faster but always froze just before you get to the to start playing, it let me choose the game mode, the difficulty level, all music or separated albums, song, and then it freezes, I deleted every album except for 5 of them and it didn't work, I tried everything except a different bios, so if any of you could help me, that would be great, is it because of the bios or because the 128 MB of ram?

For all the people who are experiencing crashes - try deleting all files related to characters (packages, everything in the /Characters directory) and restarting.  No characters work in v10 and they will always crash it.  This is fixed in v11 which will be out soon.

I have no idea if pump-it-up controllers work, and as I've already stated, I'm not going to work on movies anymore.

XPort, any chance you can get XMV movies to work? I heard a silly stupid rumor from somewhere that there was a custom StepmaniaX hack that had support for XMV movies, and then we can just drag & drop our videos from the Ultramix/Unleashed series into RandomMovies (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

By the way, for the upcoming v11 (glad to hear you're releasing another one), will the Character icons work correctly? I find it strange you say no characters work, yet I was able to use them just fine, minus their selection icons were corrupted...

the first time I loaded everything, characters, note skins, themes, but it didn't work, so deleted everything from the characters, note skins, themes, announcers directories and tried with only songs added, but didn't work either, like I said, only 5 albums were left in the songs folder, but once again it didn't work, the thing is that I tried in a 64MB Xbox and it worked, so I assume its a 128MB Xbox issue, could you look into it Xport? thanks in advance

"didn't work" means what exactly?  StepmaniaX will load and get to a certain point and crash or it never even starts?  If it's getting to a certain point and then crashing, that does not seem to be a 128mb issue since, if anything, I would expect it to just crash right away when launching the app.  As far as I know, nothing special needs to be done for apps to make use of the 128mb.

I'm getting similar crashes to the one I just posted when finishing a song, backing out of a song, etc...same OUT OF MEMORY errors.

I am using the same characters that have been posted earlier in this thread. All character files are bitmap, and they seem to be almost inverted, but not quite, like Robo 2001 is pinkish instead of bluish...characters run fine otherwise tho, which is why I'm surprised people are stating errors.

Edit1: Have you looked into the jpg hot-pink issue?
Edit2: I should mention that I run everything in .SMZIP, just as it's easier to archive and move around, and not worry about filename lengths, this shouldn't affect songs like the one I posted crashing, right?

I can't make absolute_one crash.  I'd like to think that it was fixed with whatever changes I've already made, but I can't think of why it would crash when you select it with the music wheel.

Yes, there will be lots of out of memory errors because of the way things are configured in v10.  This will be fixed in v11.  The bmp character files being offcolor will be fixed also.

ok, the last part of the log is here, just the last part because the complete log its more than one post.
stepmania was delted since it was not working for me, so I tried again just a few minutes ago to post the log, this time it stucked choosing the album, I did have this problem before, but if some albums are removed it continues but always freezes just before start playing the game. I hope that helps xport, I'am going to post other log with less albums.

Less songs, and I can get pass from where it froze last time, but if i press start on "All Music" it pass from there but then again it locks up.
by the way if when choosing the album up or down on the pad its pressed it locks up too.
