Title: Dosxbox Current Discussion
Post by: XPort on August 28, 2004, 11:17:00 AM
This is the main discussion thread for the most recent version of DOSXBox.

Use this thread to do any of the following:

Ask a question about DOSXBox
Report a bug about DOSXBox
Submit a feature request for DOSXBox

Do not use this thread to post about projects other than DOSXBox.
Do not post questions/bug reports/feature requests without first reading the FAQs for DOSXBox.
Do not ask where these projects can be downloaded.

Rule violators will get one warning. After that, you will be temporarily or permanently banned depending on the situation.  I'm sorry if that sounds harsh, but it has taken me a cumulatively long time to write the FAQs for these projects.  If you cannot do me the courtesy of taking the time to read them, then I do not want you posting here.

This thread will be pruned/cleaned periodically.  If you had a question in this thread and it is now gone, then it was either in violation of the rules or your answer can now be found in the FAQs section.

DOSXBox 286/386 PC Emulator port for XBox v6

http://xport.xbox-scene.com

http://dosbox.sourceforge.net

What's New :

- Every file gets a unique configuration regardless of whether or not
the filename is unique.  This fixes the configuration problems where
different games have the same executable filename (e.g. play.exe ).
This also fixes the screenshot filenames.

- Added configuration option to enable VSync.  This should fix the screen
tearing but performance will suffer with it enabled.

- Added ability to map the following keyboard keys:
     + Num Lock
     + Scroll Lock
     + PrintScreen
     + Pause/Break

- Added ability to use light gun as a mouse pointer

Stella, Gnuboy, SMSPlus, FCEUltra, HUGO, NeoPop, DGen, Bochs, HUGO-CD,
FMSXBox, Bliss, WinSTon, Gens, Z26X, StepmaniaX, PCSXBox, XBoyAdvance,
DOSXBox, AtariXLBox, MirrorMagicX, KoboX, MaelstromX, MarblesX, Vice64X,
Vice20X, VicePETX, KegsX, XPired, AdamX, WonderSwanX, BeatsOfRageX,
PowermangaX, LynxBox, BlueMSXBox, GladiatorX, AmphetamineX, StarfighterX,
PachiX, BlobWarsX, OdysseyX, ArnoldX, X68000X, WinUAEX
what's next?

Enjoy!

Thankies for the VSync option happy.gif

One other thing though, would it be possible to speed up the mouse controls when using the analogue stick? Games like Wolfenstein 3D and X-Wing use the mouse for analogue movement but it's way too slow ATM.

Great work, just the additions I was hoping smile.gif  I don't know what kind of twisted person makes Scroll lock a mandatory key, but unfortunately that kind of a twisted individual also made a great game like Tankkk...

But a couple of guestions about the new configuration files. Does Dosxbox v6 "automatically import" configurations made with v5, or is there a GUI option to do so? Or can this be done manually by copying/renaming/cut&pasting files (haven't tried it yet, so I don't new mechanism)? I spent some time specifying the mappings for a few games and would hate get them destroyed in the update.

Cheers,

Cheers,

It will first search for the old configuration filename and if it finds it, it will copy it over to the new filename.  The old configuration is then deleted.

Let's say you have two games launched by the filename SIERRA.EXE and they are both configured the same way.  The first time you load up the first SIERRA.EXE, it will copy over the old configuration and delete it.  After this, if you load up the second SIERRA.EXE, it will not be able to find any configuration files and will default to whatever the current configuration is (which is the configuration of the last game you loaded.)

This is an easy way to copy one game configuration to another, if the need arises.  Load up SOURCEGAME and then exit back to the game selection menu.  Then highlight DESTGAME on the game selection menu and press the BLACK button to delete all configuration files for DESTGAME.  Then press A and it should bring you to the game configuration screen where you should see that the settings are the same as SOURCEGAME.  The keymappings will all be the same as SOURCEGAME as well.

I have a problem with V6: it only runs games that have a config file from V5. If I copy a new game to the harddrive, V6 can't execute it. I have delete all game configs but didn't work until I used V5.

Any idea?

What do you mean by "can't execute it"?  Describe exactly what is happening and what game you are trying to run.

So have you actually run Xwing on DosXBox, Likklebaer? That's the one game I really really want!!

If you wouldn't mind, can you tell me which version you're running, and any special measures you had to take to get it to install? I've got the Xwing Collector's Edition CD, but I couldn't get it to install at all with DosXBox V3. I'm not sure whether it was a problem with the old version of DosXbox, or whether my Xwing CD is just plain incompatible with DOSBOX. It won't install on Windows 2000 either - I get an error saying something like "the program is trying to directly access the harddrive". Well duh! It's trying to install the game!

I'll get the latest version of DosXbox at the weekend!

Yes, with a little tweaking both X-Wing and TIE-Fighter run quite nicely.

However, I haven't had to install from CD. The files I'm using come from an installation I did on an old PC years ago and it wasn't from Collector's Edition disc. So I'm afraid I really don't know what to suggest.

I'm pretty sure I know what you're trying to say now.  It's not that v6 cannot run the games, it's that it no longer automatically sets up the autoexec.bat lines for you (which you can edit manually on the game configuration screen.)

This is fixed and will be out in the near future.

Hi again,

V6 (haven't tested v7) seems to suffer from a strange slowdown whenever the right trigger is pressed. This happens even if it's not mapped to anything, and left trigger doesn't seem to be affected. This happens at least with Slick 'n Slide, Pinball Dreams 2 and Pinball Fantasies.  Let me know if more detailed information is needed.

Cheers,

I have this at the emulator forum, but I think this is a batter place for it.

Would there be any way for you to add more options for the Game Mappings?

I've got V6, and in the game mappings area there's no way to map the Up, Down, Left, or Right arrows to the controller. There's also no way to map anything higher than the letter a.

If there's any way you could add this, it would make playing some of my older games with an Xbox controller work much better.

Sorry if I'm over looking something, but is there a way to swap the mouse to the right analog instead? I was playing Hexx which runs VERY well BTW, but it kinda gets old having to let off of the directional pad to look around.

Seems like there is some sort of speed increase since version 5? I would not know why, but now Alone In The Dark 2 is running great!

I went to the Game UI settings. It's not there. I looked through every controller setting for it, and it's just not there.

edit: And I read the Dosxbox FAQ in the sticky. It's not mentioned there, either.

XPort maybe you could help me.

I've read the FAQ, the help menu in the emulator, and I've looked at the readme.

I keep getting told that I can map any button to the controller for the game, but I just don't see the option anywhere.

I'm using v8, and here's my normal process to get to the controller settings:

Open game>right thumbstick click>Configuration>Controller Configuration>Controller 1>Change Joypad Mappings>Change Game Mappings

In this screen there's nothing for mapping the keyboard up/down/left/right, or any letters past A. I can't change pages or anything by pressing right/left on the d-pad, so it's not like they're on a different page.

I've also tried all the other controller 1 menus, and there's nothing there to map keys I need to the controller.

It's not like I haven't tried figuring this out. I've looked everywhere I can, and I'm being told I haven't and that it's 'right there' and stuff.

Can you help me?

Post by: XDelusion on November 12, 2004, 04:50:00 AM
Configure Controller 1...

...then Change Emulator Definitions.

At which point, you manually add in the keys you want in your Joy Mapping list, then goto Joy mapping, and assign those keys to your controller.

i am sorry.. i didnt know that..

im not used to developers checking in regularly to talk to the masses..

and ehm. WHAT??? you dont mean to say that all these emulators are being created by one person?? that is impossible.. .. isnt it??

anyway.. i finally got this thing under control.. it runs beautifully.. exept for some games.. but im guessing i would need a 486 emulator for that.. lol.. (doom2 High seas trader..) ive read that you are experimenting with a dynamic core.. which should speedup the emulation.. or something.. im not a programmer so i wouldnt know..

the control setup is not that difficult however i find that the whole interface structure is a bit chaotic..  a lot of features i inversly proportional to a intuitive interface, i guess..

naturally i have some some suggestions..

the controller assignment is a bit cumbersome.. first having to define what i want to control with my controller.. and next actually putting under speciffic controller buttons..
my idea would be to make a menu where the buttons of the controller are listed and you just have to choose what keyboard(or mouse) key you want under it..
(and a advanced button so you can make those nice dual controller combos  for frameskip etc.. which would work like it does now..)

and i have a couple other ideas.. but im tired right now.. also i can understand that you get a lot of suggestions from everybody and get a bit irritated with them.

couple of questions to finish though..
how can i upload my configs?
how can i delete a config? or has that been answered in previous messages.. ill go check after posting..
how can i put 2 keyboard keys under one controller button.. hold on..  with your somewhat cumbersome controller setup.. that shouldnt be that hard.. ok it does have its advantages..

ooh im tired.. im off to bed..

Couple questions for anyone that might know.

I have been able to get most games to run with dosxbox.

I'm having a problem with NBA Jam TE, Duke Nukem 3D & Rally Championship Racing.

They will execute to their DOS loader and terminate back to the dos prompt.

Has anyone had this problem and resolved it?

Also, will it be possible in the future to run a DOS based Windows game. What I mean is AGD revamped King's Quest I but it needs Ddirectx to run.  So if you try to run the executable, it gives you the famous error 'Cannot run in DOS mode'.

Is there a way around this as well?

I haven't tried myself but don't bother. DosBox is a 286/386 emulator and according to my tests, the Xbox port is comparable to a 386-25/40 MHz so those games even if run, won't be playable.

Ok, thanks for the speed information I will have to keep that in mind.

Is it possible to emulate 486dx50 systems with DosXbox or is the emulation speed maxed out?

Also I found a great site for DOS games if you have corrupt 5 1/4's and need the downloads. I won't post it on here in case of legalities. Now, I don't need to mess with the ADG releases because they have a lot of SCI based Sierra releases available.

The only one I couldn't get to run properly so far is Police Quest 4. ALL the others work perfectly and look excellent. PQ4 loads up and displays the Sierra graphic, I have sound but the mouse doesn't respond, and then it freezes at the menu. Not sure what is causing the problem with that.

Any ideas?

This is a great app, I have ressurected a ton of my old DOS games, it's like having 10 different machines in the Xbox now. I'm glad I went this route instead of a PS2!

I even tested Windows 3.1 on it.... ha ha. It runs, I was shocked!

Just the other day I got dosxbox v8 to run, and it worked like a dream. Commander Keen 1 and 4, Jazz Jackrabbit, Supaplex, etc.

Now I just reinstalled XBMC 2004-11-15 (and set the auto temperature control to checked, which makes the fan spin less, thus the noise less), and ever since that, no dos game starts, every game -properly installed and working before- gives me a black screen... IGR seems disabled, the xbox hangs.

So I restored my previous XBMC (2004-11-11), set the temperature and fanspeed control to default (unchecked), completely removed all dosbox settings from E and F, reinstalled Dosbox, restored the testgames back on my hdd, reconfigured them, and still the black screen of death.

Any suggestions to fix this?

Hey Debikkel,

Make sure to double check the configuration for each executable, because you have to make sure it's using the proper video mode, ie: Tandy, VGA, or CGA.

Robocop did that for me when I tried to use the Tandy emulation even though it's the CGA version. I had to change the emulation to VGA and then it worked no problem. I was dissapointed though because I have the EGA 16-color version of Robocop but it has that stupid copy proctection and I can only find the CGA version on the net.

But once again, make sure to double check the configuration on the executables.
Are you using a favourites list or executing your games directly?

NOTE: Also make sure you have XMS and EMS enabled as well.

guys i've been using dosxbox for a few months now, and i have to say, its extraordinary.

however i am to understand that it emulates a 386 pc, which is something like 33mhz. but when i look at the pc dosbox

http://dosbox.source...php?show_news=1

it doesn't emulate just a 386, it emulates a general x86 pc running dos. why is it that the xbox version only emulates a 386 running dos, and not all x86 pcs.

or are these two completely programs i have mixed up???????

dos shell, thats what i meant yeah.

thanks.

xport, it would be nice to have a tab on the menu to take you to the dos shell. or even an option to always boot straight into it.

just an idea, up to you whether you choose to implement it.

have you thought about putting save states in dosbox, there are quite a few games that i would need that for

and im pretty sure this is a bug

each game shares the same configuration, if i change any settings for one game, it will do it for the rest of them, this also happens with the controllers
this is all very annoying
because of this your download configuration from your web site would be worthless since it would configure every game

and can anyone help me with this, every other time i enter a certain game i get some type of error
i'll use the game raptor as an example
i played the game for the first time and it ran perfect, i turned off my xbox and came back later to play that game and it said something like
16 meg error (15) protected against 386 and 486 or something like that
this also happened with alot of other games

i restart my xbox and those games work but now other games get that error
why the hell is it doing that, and is there a sure way to fix it

one more stupid question
on the virtual keyboard, is there some way that i can press more than one key at a time on it
its probably a no, but im just wondering since i would like to get some of those codes working for some games

I just have a real quick question/request.  I'm sure everyone here has read on the main page about the new Magic Box FXPS.  It is a product that allows one to connect a ps/2 keyboard and mouse to xbox.  Though it was designed for first person shooter games, I was wondering if it can be used for games in dosxbox?  So I guess the question is can it be used and if not will support be added in a later version?  No pressure.

I've got a v1.2 xbox, original 10GB HD, I'm running a late december build of XBMC for my dashboard and I can't get DosXbox to work.

I have a wireless USB keyboard combo too (gyration) but I unplugged it.

It just goes to a black screen. I installed to f:\apps\emulation\dosxbox\ but tried it on E as well. I fiddled with the .ini file (not much to do there, really) and tried loading avalaunch first, then DosXbox, still no go.

Any thoughts?

the xport of the commodore 64 emu works perfect, as well as Gentoox and other things.. bochs works too but it is not as well designed IMO.

Help?

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is possible, but could a custom config.sys be configured for each game? I'm trying to do a LASTDRIVE setting in order to try and get my X-Wing CD and Tie Fighter CD to work.

I installed the games to my pc harddisk, copied those installed files over to the Xbox and ran install.exe there. It found the soundcard settings and everything is looking good, but it can't find either -original- cd in the drive (all further emulator configuration ie cdrom mapping is done properly as far as I can see).

I would like to set LASTDRIVE in order to give it all one last try with fakecd, and see if X-Wing or Tie Fighter understands that. But fakecd doesn't work due to no driveletters available... which... can be set using LASTDRIVE in config.sys smile.gif

Or have I completely lost track here somewhere? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I have also just started playing Legend of Kyrandia on my XBOX but I find that its a little annoying to have the original cd in the drive when I am running it.  (It may also be the cause of the stuttering).  I have tried all different methods to get DOSXBOX to run the cd off the hard drive.  The problems I have encountered is that in DOSXBOX the mounting of the cdrom does not support sub dirs (well anything that's not your actual cd rom).  I also tried creating an iso image of the CD and then running IMGMOUNT this goes to a black screen and froze.  In desperation I tried copying FAKECD across and running but then I have the dilema of no LASTDRIVE in the config.sys.  Any one have any ideas....

Having said all that I think this emulator rocks!!!

Go to the dosbox official website http://dosbox.source...php?show_news=1 and browse the forums, there's tons of help there.  You should also have an .nfo or readme.txt or something with it that will tell you the basics, it's pretty easy once you learn a few basic commands and Xport's interface makes everything SUPER easy on the Xbox (as opposed to the pc version).

just got malcolm's revenge running on dosbox for xbox after alot ini hacking  biggrin.gif

its the first game i got working.
all the other gave my problems with the sound install. (7th guest, under a killing moon) gobliiins worked disk version  sleeping.gif
I loved this game so i wanted to get it running on my xbox.

how did i do it.

i first installed it on my pc.

first problem xp will not write the player.ini file
so i made a one from MALCOLM.INI
then i installed it without sound. the player.ini file get updated.
so you will have

[Game]
RunStyle=DOS
[Player]
SoundEnabled=false

and transferd it to my xbox but got a error. FILEDATA.FDT not found or something like that the file is on the cd.

but the xbox says found soundcard gravis. so i used my edit to change player.ini to
[Game]
RunStyle=DOS
[Player]
SoundEnabled=Gravis

transfer player.ini  to xbox.

because it will not find my cd i used a no cd crack
put all data from malcolm (CD) in the malcolm install directory.
gave it a try running main.exe and it worked only no movies need to fix this.
maybe if i burn a copy to a cdrw my dvd will read my cd and i dont need a nocd crack.

but first gone play malcolm abit.

if some need the player file for xbox just make a player.ini in a text edit and place
[Game]
RunStyle=DOS
[Player]
SoundEnabled=false
in it. save it and your done.

Greetz and good luck

ps anyone got 7th guest running?
dosbox is cool just like scumm. love the old games they are better then doom 3 tongue.gif

This emu is great.   I've been playing my Dungeon Hack and Dark Sun I and II on it, and it runs way better than it did on my real 386 dx 33 and my 486 dx2 66 (both with 4, then 8, and then 16 megs of ram...with a 520 megabyte hard drive!)

Okay, no bragging material these days...

Xport, is there any hope of save states in the future?   Or is it just too complicated to get the machine state, or require too much hard disk space?   I'm hopeful, you see...

Dungeon Hack can't be completed in one sitting, and it keeps giving me a, "...couldn't open savegame directory for reading..." and then a prompt when I go to camp and save.

I tried this in Dark Sun, and it seemed to save fine, so that isn't a big issue.   But a romp in DH and I always have to restart from scratch.   It's not life-threatening, but save states or a resolved save system would be cool.

And if I haven't said it enough yet, Xport, you rock.   I love Neogenesis and DosXbox.    In fact, I only really use those two emus.

To all those who want to map the cursor keys - numeric keypad MAY be the answer.   I was reading a lot of faqs and docs about DOSXBOX and somewhere I think it said that the number lock key is mapable.   SO you map the NUMLOCK then map 2, 4, 6 and 8 to buttons.   Shut off number lock and you have your cursor keys, right?    Did anyone try this out?   And no, I don't know how to map NUMLOCK.... smile.gif

I may be mistaken... huh.gif

I'm not sure how this wireless desktop works exactly, but I assume you have one USB plug for both devices?   While this may work in Windows (with help from special drivers) it shouldn't work on your Xbox.

I made a 'home jobby' USB adapter, and instead of cutting off the XBox controller end, I left it on.   So I have a cable that splits in a "Y" out of the controller port, and I can hook up USB devices or a controller, but not both at the same time.   I actually tried it and it will not work.   Controller, yes.   Keyboard, yes.   Both, no.
If I hook up both at the same time, the controller wins over the keyboard.

So it could be a simple thing like it won't work without specific drivers, or it could be two devices on one USB line.   Maybe your keyboard is 'winning' out between the two devices and you should try them separately to see if they work with DOSXBOX at all....

I cannot speak for the Linux Xbox community, and as such I have no idea if it would work in Linux on Xbox or not.

I hope this helps you out.... smile.gif

For those asking (Klownie), yes it is possible to map the arrow keys to the dpad and it is very easy.  However if you're using a keyboard (which if you were then you wouldn't be doing this) it would take functionality from some keys.  I went in the the controller config, then I believe emulator config (at work so I don't have xbox in front of me to clarify).  Find a few keys that you won't be using and select one.  You will be given a list of all of the keyboard's keys that can be binded to the emulator's keys.  Towards the bottom you will find either arrow up, down, left right or cursor up, down, left, right.  Assign those four keys there, then go back into the game controller config.  You should see where you assigned the cursor keys on the left somewhere and you can now assign the dpad buttons to the corresponding keys.  Hope that helps.

OK, I got Fallout to work, but it's unbelievably slow, so scratch that.  I'll wait to see what happens with the 360 (if anything DOES happen).

Still absolutely no luck with keyboard/trackball combo, separate keyboard & mouse , or otherwise.  I'll give up on that, or dig further into it from a hardware viewpoint.

Incidentally, any rumblings about any of this stuff going to the 360?

jameslkight :

All I was actually saying is that I think the combo won't work and you'll need two separate cables - IE : Keyboard in Port 1 and Mouse in Port 2.

I could be wrong but I could never get two devices working on one joystick port.   Unless someone coded it into the emulator specifically.   It would mean something to the effect of Xport programming the emulator to specifically use a combo.

All I would ever do is use two separate joystick ports, with two cables, one for the keyboard and one for the mouse.

guybird :

Thanks!   I haven't seen that, but I have to try it!

I haven't read this topic, but Keyboard support for controlling the emulator (before the game is selected.)

It's a bit annoying having to swap between controller to keyboard (share the same USB slot), especially when I have to do it fast so the keyboard is picked up before the game has been started.

If this is already implemented (haven't checked), or can't be done (my keyboard works flawlessly in XBMC, and everything else that supports it), then sorry.

Btw, Since the sega cd version of rise of the dragon dosen't 100% work I've been playing the Dos version and it seems pretty good so far. The voice acting in the sega cd version was horrible, although the graphics were alot cleaner. Also, I heard there were many things censored out of the sega cd version.

Is there any way to have dosxbox bypass the gui and directly load a pre-defined game? I know that with v4.01-HCl you could set up mystuff.bat to act like an autoexec, but that version doesn't support mapping the mouse to the sticks and also doesn't have a working dynamic core. I realize that version was based on Xport's v4, not actually done by him...

I tried editing custom_launch_params.cpp using the examples in its comments, but with no effect. Am I doing something wrong? Can this be done?

What I would really like to see is a default.xbe along with some sort of .ini containing emu settings & joypad mappings... no gui, no global saving settings to an external folder, nothing. Slapping these 2 files in a folder along with an old DOS game would launch it on the xbox. Edit the default.xbe title in a dash and u have an instant port. Is it just me, or would that be really cool?

Does the "Xport method of command-line launching" apply to dosxbox?

Since I can't seem to find a definition anywhere of this method, am I right in that it is an unleashx menu item with an Arg1=? <item="c:\dosxbox\default.xbe" Arg1=.... >game title</item>

If that is the case, is the syntax the same as for dosbox .62? (dosbox [name] [-exit] [-c command] [-fullscreen] [-conf congfigfile] [-lang languagefile] [-machine machinetype] [-noconsole] [-startmapper])

If so, which options apply for the xbox version? (guessing name, hopefully -conf, and maybe -c command for xbox)

If so, do the command-line switches all get put in Arg1= as a single string or does there need to be Arg2= etc for each option?

Also, if these options do work, will it auto-mount the folder [name], or do you need to use -c MOUNT [name]?

When specifying a path, will a path relative to the xbe work, or does it need to be an absolute path?

If it will only take an absolute path, can it be defined as E:\games\blahblah or does it need to be \Device\Harddisk0\Partition1\games\blahblah?

I apologize for all these questions, but I have searched the forums and docs inside out for anything relating to this with no results whatsoever.

I'm trying to set up Phantasmagoria to run in DOSXbox. I'm having some lockup problems which I just can not figure out. I think it's sound related but the game doesn't let me choose no audio from what I can tell so it's hard to diagnose. Phantas runs fine in PC DOSBOX, and the game compatibility page says that 0.61 is good enough for it. So I'm a bit baffled.

Anyone else run it?
Here's my thread over on VOGONS http://vogons.zetafl...p?p=83436#83436.

I downloaded 0.62 for Win32 and messed with it a bit. It seems that the Sound Blaster emulation was a lot less complete at this version and in Phantasmagoria most audio is missing in the game. There is no FM music, no video sound, and a lot of in-game sound effects aren't playing. That and the Normal core is FAR less efficient in this version compared to newer releases. My 2.6 GHz Opteron can't hack more than about 15,000 cycles. Of course dynamic core would run a lot better, but the 0.62 dynamic core is bad and DOSXBOX doesn't have it at all so I didn't test it.

We REALLY need someone to get this emulator up to speed. DOSBOX has gotten a ton better since 0.62. And we also really need dynamic core to make it in this time. The little P3 in Xbox would be very appreciative.

Please 'o please tell me this can happen!

Hi  new to the board.  Quick couple questions.  i want to check to see if some of these FMV games will work or if anyone has tried.  Ripper, or any of the Tex murphy games like undera  killing moon or pandora directive.   Also I take it you cant mount  iso's  like in the windows version?  can i use a burnt disc of the game?  I know ripper is like a 5 disc game.  can i still run it and swap the discs out?

Thanks for any help.  I have gotten these to work on the windows version of dosbox.

A burnt disc would either have to be in XISO format or CD-RW in order for your Xbox to read it.  Just like any other CD.  A real CD though, would work just fine (assuming it has no copy protection).  Most Xbox drives though have difficulty with CD-RW so XISO is your best bet.

Sad!  Especially now that ver. 0.65 can now run Windows 3.1 (as far as I know).  It would be cool to see Windows now emulated on an Xbox through DosXbox.

Patience little ones.  Xport has already stated that he's going to update each of his emulators before heading back into retirement.  I'm sure he's well aware that Dosbox 0.65 is out and how much Dosxbox would benefit from it and the recent additions to his GUI.  Even if Dosxbox is the last project on his priority list, it'll still get done because that's just how Xport is.

A few question about controlling:
Is it possible to mount the keyboard direction buttons to the xbox pad (i didnt find a option). My pad doesnt seem to work at all. Wolfenstein i.e. detects it as joystick but doesnt react at any input (just starts, when i map "Enter" to my Start Button).

No.  You have to extract the files and ftp them over to the xbox..  Then you point DosXbox to that directory and the file that starts the game (or actually any file will do).  Me... I use dummy .cfg files named after the game and point it to the directory the game resides in, then I set it up to "Cd C:", and run the proper file.

I bind the keyboard direction keys to the xbox pad all the time and have never had a problem.

Hmm, okay, so just stumbled across this place, and I'm pretty interested in the DosXbox program, though I cannot seem to find it readily available for download, and I'm told not to even ask where I can download it.
Since I can't ask "where," I'm going to ask "why."

I can understand that for most of the software here, a lot of emulators for console systems and ports of specific games, I understand that these *might* be questionable in the legal category, since they would only be used to play illegal copies.  But why would this program?  It's emulating DOS, so the games I would run would have to be the actual and original versions,  I don't see how that would be illegal.

I'd really like to check this program out, especially since the whole reason I modded my box was to get it to play old PC games (though that hasn't gone over very well just yet) and even though the 386 era is a bit too early for most of the titles I am interested in, there are still a few games I'd like to run on it.

So seriously now, why is none of the software on this site readily available for download?  If someone is worried about the legalities of having ports of games I want to play available, why do they still list information about them just to taunt me and mock my inability to play these older and cherished games?

And moreover, why would there be no download for DOSXBox, which is unquestionably legal?

Sorry , but because all that software has been compiled with MS SDK we can not link to the software due possible legal issues.
The best way to get the files is irc & newsgroups.

If you are a programmer , please support the OpenXDK project  (http://openxdk.sourceforge.net/). This will make it possible to distribute xbox homebrew software legally.

Now go here and get your dosxbox.

and damn that was a long post you wrote..

I'm having difficulties getting DosXbox to work.  It runs, but it stops at the DPMI screen.  Presumably because I can't give the xbox input.  The adapter I have to run a keyboard is the SmartJoyFrag which seems to input commands from a ps/2 keyboard as controller buttons.  That's the problem tho, apparently dosxbox doesnt recognize controller buttons as valid input.

So i figured i'd go around this by setting up a custom config file that mapped the controller buttons to keyboard keys....  it sounds difficult but it's the only way I can think of.

Following that course I searched for sample dosxbox configs and found none so i downloaded DosBox and have looked at that config file....now I have the problem as to what the differnces are between the two.

I would just generate a config file with the dosxbox config.com HOWEVER i can't type in that command to get it to do that.

Any help would be appreciated.

I believe that Yserbius is awesome... Basically the worlds first mmorpg and better yet, it was the early 90's! The game play is pretty good for the game being so old. I think that its actually more fun than alot of newer rpgs. I got 3 pc's running dosbox so we can play but I wanted to see if i could get my xbox running yserbius online too biggrin.gif

i fpossible i like to see dosxbox runs mugen at full speed. at first i though
maybe it's the graphics thats causing this lag. but when i tune it down to
8bit color. the process time was alot slower, just like that simpsons episode
when the comic nerd trying to download this women picture on his monitor
with his dialup modem.

if mugen can run at full speed and joystick support, it would be perfect for mugen players.

That was an oversight on my part.  I had removed all the SDL stuff when I moved to my UI instead of just a straight SDL port, but then when I added IPX Network support, I added in the SDL-Net libs.  The xport_common.zip package has been updated with these items, so re-download it and you should be good to go.

Talking about the sources and compiling them: Are there any tutorials how to do it and once you have the VS.NET and XDK installed, is the process not too difficult? I have a few experiences with compiling under Linux (configure/make/make install) but only did it there if there was no binary to find, otherwise I don't know a lot about programming.
However I would like to see some of my favorite see translated into other languages and would like to ask if this would be a task possible if you don't know a lot about coding. I would like to translate the menus and pop up window information and help section; could this be done by simply translating the text/words in the sources and compiling it again? And would special characters like the Ä or ß in German be supported?

Install VS.NET and XDK
Download xport_common and a project file, unzip to same directory.
Open SLN file in VS.NET
"Rebuild Solution"
If it works, then you have an XBE in the "Debug" or "Release" directory.
"xbepatch" (utility found on xbins) the XBE to make it suitable for non-debug xboxes
Now the XBE should be just like the most recent one released - make the text changes and try it out.
Those German characters may or may not print - I'm not sure.  If they do not print, then replace the skin TTF file with one of your choosing and it may yield better results.

Thank-you Xport, I got your dosbox source to compile.
Tweaked the blocksize sound buffer to 128 from 2048.
The sound is now closer to realtime, rather 1 second latter.

Now to tweak the volume control, it's too sensitive.

Hi.  I have a quick question.  I have been using v8 of DosXbox for a while now but finally updated today to v13.

I was so happy because I thought that the background music would finally work...  but it dosent sad.gif

There is a option to select the music file you want to use but I cannot get it to play not matter what I try.  Is it a problem with the emulator or something I am doing?  I think this same thing happened when I first started using v.8 and I posted in either this thread or another asking about it.

Is there a way to fix this?  I would really love to have the music to accompany my handmade skin.

Please let me know and thanks for all the great stuff Xport!

was'nt this something to do with lack of memory, but not really, ie if you were only going to use small dos games you would be able to have music, but it is purposly not played because there would be bigger games not having enough memory and causing people problems so it was cut ? winuae is the same I think ?

im not talking about playing music while in game nessacarly.

Im talking about background music while you are in the main menus, game select menu, and other menus.

All of Xports other emulators support this feature just fine.  There is even the option to select background music for the menus in Dosxbox but it dosent work.  You can select the music you want to use but it will never play.

I even tryed manually editing the ini file to no avail.

And it shouldnt be a memory issue because when you load the game you want to play it should just kill the music as it does with all the other emulators.

I would really love to have this feature back as I like to skin my emulators and my Matrix theme for DosXbox would be much better with some kick ass rock playing in the menus and stuff.

Rubarb is correct.  It was intentionally omitted to decrease the memory footprint.  It's not simply a matter of stopping the music when the game starts playing.  The MP3 engine itself (the code that plays the music) takes up memory.  There are ways to dynamically load and release code (examples of such can be found in MAMEoX) but it's very finicky and hard to get working just right.  The MP3 background music never seemed worth the effort to me - but maybe someone else will feel like doing it.

Or if someone doesn't care about losing the extra memory, they can always recompile the project after commenting out the "#define NO_MP3" line in the dosxbox.cpp file.

I'm just wondering how DOSBox has been around on the Box for as many years as it has and I've never seen any t0rrents for XBox configured DOS games.

XPORT's idea for scraping automatic configurations was genius in a way, but serve really no purpose for the DOS emulator.  There are just far too many variables.  One single thing off and a config won't work.

Anybody who has gotten games working in DOSbox and know where all the relavant files are located would benefit the community greatly by getting into contact with me.

DOS happens to be one of my favorite old school gaming systems, but I just have had far too much to do to even look into it other than about 10 games.

Later,

I've found that sometimes if a game wont "install" in dosxbox alot of times you can at least run the install on a pc.  Once the files are extracted you can copy them over to the xbox and then run the config program to get the sound and music working.
