Thanks for the info. It's not that I had a bad rom, it's just one of them's not supported, there's 2 ghoul school roms for the nes.
Ghoul School (U)
&
Ghoul School (U)

Only "Ghoul School (U) )" seems to work properly. When trying to play "Ghoul School (U), you'll see bricks in the background throughout the duration of the game.

I've been playing the non-b version for about 20 minutes and sure I see bricks, but I don't see anything that looks like graphic corruption - the walls are made out of brick.  It's a solid brick texture.  Anyway, are you saying that your version works but for some reason you have to have the non-b version to work?  If so, why?

No, I don't need it working. If it weren't for you, I'd still be thinking that that game's unplayable with the emulator. After you gave me the heads up above that it works for you, I did a quick search and got version which works just fine. I was just stating that the version I had wasn't how it was supposed to be. Anywho, thanks  happy.gif

Thanks for another great update, Xport!!

By the way...I'm having a small barbecue/party for the Memorial Day weekend and you're certainly invited.  We're having steaks, boneless chicken breasts and all the chips, dips, side dishes and what-not you could imagine.

Please show up and bring 1 six-pack of brewskis.  You da man.

**disclaimer**  I'm not urban, hip, hop, cool or whatever.  Just wanted to voice my thanks to Xport and would honestly invite him over to have some barbecue as well as relations with my attractive wife to repay him for his work and dedication to the scene.

Good god. I've been wanting to play Ghoul School for so long and did not know it was a rom problem. Every single update to a Nintendo emulator of Xports, the first game i would load would be Ghoul School to see if it would finally work. Thanks for that. And thanks to Xport for making a port better than I thought it could be.

If there are other games that don't work in MednafenX-NES but do work in other open-source emulators, let me know and I may be able to implement them.

Regarding mapper - select the mapper line, then immediately cancel with B.

Xport, one reason that games will not run correctly in an NES emulator is because the ROM's header is incorrect.  Auditing tools such as GoodNES do not check to make sure that the header has correct values for all fields for a particular game.  Nestopia solves this problem in a manner similar to MAME, i.e., it keeps its own internal database for automatically correcting headers.  In fact, it doesn't even need to change the actual ROM file, as it can simply ignore the header info in the ROM, which is most likely incorrect anyway, and instead when a ROM is loaded, it looks up the correct header data in its database.

Hence you might want to port Nestopia's internal ROM database into Mednafenx-nes.  You'd be surprised how many games that didn't run or that didn't run correctly will run perfectly when using an internal ROM database.

Really though, this is a NES-specific problem, mainly do to the fact that the NES ROMs floating around the net have bad headers.

Couldn't you somehow use a DDR Dancemat for this?  Seems like the logical thing to do.

yo Xport, forgot to mention that since you've helped me rekindle that magic I used to have for Ultima: Exodus, I named a character after you. He's A Human, Class a Druid (Best Class In The Game IMO).

I'll try posting the save here tomorrow. The save's near the end of the game, all that's left to do is go to the king palace that's surrounded by this snake (Choose "Tools" and play The Flute To Make It Go Undersea), Make it to the Altar to the far north, Pray, and choose the cards in this order or you'll instantly die.

This one just keeps getting better & better.  I'm glad PowerPad support has finally been added.  I've always thought it was a good idea that could be easily implemented.

@Jagasian: Great suggestion.  I didn't even know about internal ROM databases.  Sounds like it'd help out a lot.

There is a problem with dragon ball z 4-1 [p1].zip mapper.

Fceultrax is able to play all the 4 games in the cartridge, but mednafenx nes is only able to play the last game  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Here is the information of the rom.

Dragon Ball Z 4-in-1 [p1][!].zip

 PRG ROM:   64 x 16KiB
 CHR ROM:  128 x  8KiB
 ROM CRC32:  0x9c42e662
 ROM MD5:  0x1ba9cd23068df4d7e982c951753b66af
 Mapper:  83
 Mirroring: Horizontal

I know its marked as buggy in the documents, but is there any reason why all games in this cartridge are playable in fceultra and not in mednafenx?

Another question is that if its possible to add all those mappers supported in mednafenx that are not supported in fceultra because fceultra seems to be less resource demandant.

See u (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I finaly got the powerpad stuff to work, but now the only game that I wish to play doesn't work.  Well, half of it works, but the half I want to play doesn't.

Short Order - Eggsplode (U).nes

Eggsplode works, Short Order freezes whenever you press "9" to go into it.  I dunno what's up with it, cause I don't know about all this mapper stuff or whatnot.

For starters, I've confirmed that I'm running v8...it would suck if I tried to give you advice with an older version.

I just booted up v8 and played the first level of Kung-Fu to see if there were any problems.  It played perfectly in 1080i/NTSC (IIRC).  That's a great game BTW.

So...with that in mind...I'll ask a few more questions to see if I can help you or jog your memory.

- Did you do a clean install of Mednafenx-nes v8?
- Did you delete the prior save file / save states / cache remnants that might cause problems?
- Did this rom work fine on prior NES emulators?  Is it tested to work?
- Have you tried wiping everything and then re-ftp upload again to see if it works then?

Let me know and I'll try to help out...later.

this is a late reply,

i found more games that don't work, paperboy 2, and then some ninja game its called zen or something like that

but i did do a clean install, and then reinstalled it again
i deleted my cache in e: and the saves folder for the games that don't work
and all these games did work on fce v16

it might be the bios i use, but i don't have alot of options on a 1.6 xbox
and ever since i started using my 1.6 alot of games haven't been working
like i think all my dos games don't work anymore, and some n64 don't work either

any advice anyone?

This could just be semantics and that I'm misunderstanding you, but I normally go into Micro$oft Dash and then find and delete the prior save file for the entire application in question (in this case FCEUltra and/or MednafenX).  Or, I just navigate to the TDATA and UDATA folders via FTP and trash the saves in question.

Then, using my Chris Farley Ninja Skillz ™, I completely delete the offending folder of the misbehaving application/emulator - be it in your E, F, or G partition.  Then, when no one is looking, I rub my rosary and do a completely "clean" install.  This way there's neither a save file, .ini file, nor offending remnants of the prior emulator left behind to piss you off.

Granted, with emulators, I always leave the rom folders behind so I don't have to re-up them (too time-consuming).

You may have meant this, but perhaps not.  It certainly won't hurt to try.

Let me know, mang.

First of all sorry for my English  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

I'l try to explain myself, i'm trying to play duck hunt with my light gun on mednafen nesv8 but i can't. I can calibrate the light gun, but i didn't find the way to play with it during the game....At the beginning of the game, when you choose the game configuration, in the controller 1 or controller 2 i cannot choose "light gun".

If anybody knows how to play this with the light gun please help me.

Not sure about the Vs, version. That's the one that requires you to input a coin? Or is it the Play choice 10 version? Not sure, but for the console one, you set controller 2 as the light gun and controller 1 as the controller I think. If you did it the other way around, that would explain it. Someone else could probablly answer this better.

In Mednafen config select gamepad in port 1 and Zapper in port 2.
It works great with Duckhunt (haven't tried VS and PC10 versions).

Mednafenx seems to be more taxing then fceultra was.  In a handful of games, with supersai2x filter and at 720p, there is slowdowns (drop from 60 to in the 40's fps), whereas there were none on fceultra.  Is there any truth to this?

As far as I know, Mednafen is more accurate than FCEUltra, which means you are going to pay with more CPU cycles.

@Xport

In 720p the only software filter i can use is superscale2x to get smooth frame rates.  When i use super2xsai (my favorite filter for the NES) the framerate drops in most games.  Is this normal, or is there something wrong (i need to fix something or delete something)?  Neogenesis, Zsnexbox, and FBA-xxx, all more advanced systems, have no problem running games in 720p in any software filter besides HQ2x.  Also there was none of these problems with fceUltra.

@Xport

Thanks again for all your great emulators.

MednafenX-NES does a lot more under the hood than FCEUltraX.

the emulator works great, but most games have crazy colors.  i tried using the auto palette option, but it didn't seem to make a difference

That auto option palette does work man, the default settings are just like a NES. The only problem is if you adjust it there is no way of getting the default settings back again, and that's exactly what I have done doh!

Can anyone tell me what the default settings are for the auto pallete please?
