Title: Xboyadvance Current Discussion
Post by: XPort on August 28, 2004, 11:15:00 AM
This is the main discussion thread for the most recent version of XBoyAdvance.

Use this thread to do any of the following:

Ask a question about XBoyAdvance
Report a bug about XBoyAdvance
Submit a feature request for XBoyAdvance

Do not use this thread to post about projects other than XBoyAdvance.
Do not post questions/bug reports/feature requests without first reading the FAQs for XBoyAdvance.
Do not ask where these projects can be downloaded.

Rule violators will get one warning. After that, you will be temporarily or permanently banned depending on the situation.  I'm sorry if that sounds harsh, but it has taken me a cumulatively long time to write the FAQs for these projects.  If you cannot do me the courtesy of taking the time to read them, then I do not want you posting here.

This thread will be pruned/cleaned periodically.  If you had a question in this thread and it is now gone, then it was either in violation of the rules or your answer can now be found in the FAQs section.

I've mentioned this before but didn't get a response so I'll mention it again happy.gif. In the original GBC Pokemon Pinball whenever the screen switches to the other part of the table (upper/lower) the music messes up briefly then returns to normal. This doesn't happen in the Windows version.

I've tried just about everything in Xboyadvance to fix the crackling sound problems in most games but still no luck... In the windows version there is significantly less crackling in games. Will this be addressed in the near future?

It'd be nice if having the R-trigger tied to fast forward would default to OFF on this fine emu.

Dual Gameboy Advances support. The source code for the VisualBoyAdvance emulator is Here Sure, I know that the xbox isn't fully compatible with one game running. But I want this feature included in the emulator just for multiplayer purposes don't matter how slow it would run. I'm sure there are others who would like this feature included and there are some who don't. If they don't want it, they don't have to use it. But the ones who do could use it on their own free will.

I would really like to see the motion blur filter implemented into the xboyadvance emulator, it is avaliable on the windows version of visual boy advance and helps with games that have bad flicker such as ballistic. Without this filter the game is almost unplayable. I have tried every other combination of hardware and software filtering avaliable (on pc and xbox) and motion blur is the only filter that will get rid of the flickering. The game is one of my favorite and i am sure it would help other roms with the same problem. Any reply would be welcome.

I have had a small problem running Astro Boy- Omega Factor, and Advance Guardian Heroes.  I've tooled around a bit with Savefile types, and BIOSes.  Otherwise, I have no idea what to tweak.  All I get is a white screen.

Thanks for the great emulators.

Question about using xboyadvance:

I downloaded the emulator & some roms. I placed them in the main directory & burned them to a cd-r but was unable to use.

I was looking for a tutorial or Faq on how to use or install but havent had luck.

any help or pointing in the right direction would be greatly appreciated thanks!!!

The pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, Fire Red & Leaf Green games don't save right.  Can this be fixed?  Whenever you save and load the game, it says Save File corrupt, loading backup.  I think this is because both games use a 1mb flash but I could be mistaken.  Either way, it doesnt work biggrin.gif.

I'd asked before the game came out, and just tried the ROM. Mawaru: Made in Wario (Wario Ware 2,) uses a motion sensor, not unlike the GBC Kirby Game. I see that motion is mapped in the configurations, but Mawaru doesn't seem to support it.
I'd be really grateful for this to work. I've got the actual game, but for a party, a GBA is a little small, and the Gameboy Player... well, I don't wanna rotate my Gamecube... rolleyes.gif

This is more for pretty much all Xport emulators than just XBoyAdvance.

Is there any way to turn the game's music off? Like, the actual rom's music/sound effects.

I know people have complained about the music in the menu playing while the game goes on, but I occasionally would like to listen to an MP3 playlist while playing a game, and the only problem is that the games music gets in the way.

I had a good look around and couldn't find any way to turn it off, so, am I just blind and it's right in front of me? Or if it's not there, is it possible that this could be added to Xport emulators?

Thanks.

for ruby n sapphire its the clock, you have to set enable real gba cl,ock or something like that to ON when you first run those games, as for leaf green fire red, search on emulator section.. i explained what you need to do to get those running..

i got a hold of the latest xboyadvance and noticed there was no xboyadvance.ini file to setup everything myself.  was it taken out?  how would someon go about setting up the saves, screenshoots, roms, etc. directory?

i actually noticed the same "problem" in some other xport emulators ... but im not going to post a reply in each xport emulator topic.  i am going to assume that the answer i get here will roughly be the same for the other xport emulators.

I've looked around, so hopefully this doesn't get me an instant ban.  Is the network mode in XBoyAdvance intended for playing GB/GBC games across two Xboxs?  Because that's what I tried, and for some reason both of the systems are controlled by the server system.  Anyone have a clue?  Thanks for any replies.

Oh, if it means anything, I have tried this with both the same game and different games.  I tested NeoGenesis, it works without problem.  The games seem to be connecting as if they were console games :/.

I forgot one other thing.  I also tried two of DBZ: Goku Hishouden and DBZ: Goku Gekitouden on one machine with Dual Gameboys turned on, I got the same problem.  To my knowledge, these games were linkable.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe XboyAdvance has network play at all.
It has a split-screen function for original Black & White Gameboy games, as well as Gameboy Color games. Not Gameboy Advance games.
I could be wrong, but I believe the two games you mentioned were Gameboy Advance games. If not, I apologize, I don't follow DBZ too much.

Those two are original GB games.  I'm not sure if it has network support.  I got two Xboxs to connect and run two different games(Pokemon Gold And Silver).  They are just both being controlled by the first controller on the server system.

Something else I wanted to add.  I don't want to get banned for this because I know alot of people have asked about it before, but I haven't seen this particular question anywhere.  If it is possible to connect two Xboxs and play the games separately over them, then would GBA link support be possible by networking two Xboxs?  I looked up some info on the GBA link and found that at max speed, it'll go about 110K/sec.  Normal network cables go about 10 Mbit/sec, which is over 1000K/sec.  Anyone else see where I'm going?  I'm not asking for this to be implemented, I'm just curious.  I don't know the specifics on the GBA Link.

Sorry for double posting.  I think I understand the purpose of the network functions now.  Is it meant to play games over a network share?  So, you wouldn't need them on your Xbox?  Or, was it indeed intended to play on two systems?

Well, it  can play games over a network share and it can link two xbox's t play.  Depends where you go wink.gif.

What's the point?  If they were all jammed together it would make everything confusing, bulky, and possibly slow things down.  There are already emulators that do these things great on their own.  Having them all in one would be a pain in the ***.

I love to use the XBox controller to play the games in my big TV.

But i hate to navigate between folders checking CROPPED names of my games, I like the file listing options of Xbox Media Center (i use it as dashboard and main player).

It list the files order by name, date & size, it allow me to view files as thumbnails or a list of files (rotating the name of the file if is bigger than the text area).

The file listing of Xboyadvance isn't customizable, the default skin waste half screen to show not so useful info and in bold format make the game dificult to read.

Please, add a 'windowed mode' of the game running, so, we can check for options or read the text file while whe're playing (adding controls to handle that  shouldn't be so dificult)

And for last, there's a way to run xboyadvance with a game withouth showing any menu?
and map the 'switch to menu' as 'switch to dashboard'?

Like:
default.xbe f:/path/to/game.gba menu=off load_save=yes

or something like that.

Saludos

It is customisable. You can edit up your own image and replace it (to get rid of the Screenshots box, for instance) and you can edit how wide it displays the names.

For example, with my skin the default rom selection screen looks like this:
http://img.photobuck...mino/select.png

My own edited image looks like this:
http://img.photobuck...select_edit.png

I took the image from the main menu, coloured over the GBA image in the background, and copied the small one from the original roms menu image and made it smaller to place at the top center of the edited image. Then using the skin configuration in the emulator I changed it so that the rom names display right across the lighter area in the middle. It takes a little trial and error to get that set correctly, but there you go.

Hi there.   I installed Xboyadvance for the first time last night and I have to say I was impressed.  We've used the PC version for a while now and it works well but the XBOX seems to do an even better job.

I do have one question though.   When copying my ROM files to the XBOX (via FTP) it stopped after 256 ROMs had been copied and refused to do any more.   Is there a 256 file limit in a single directory?   It seems a little low but given that 256 is a significant number in binary I thought it may well be the case.  512, 1024 etc would have been nicer :-)

If there is no way around the 256 file limit I'm assuming I can create multipe ROM directories and just select the one I want at startup.   It was getting too late last night to try that.   Maybe tonight ......

Hmmm.  That is interesting.  I wonder why it wouldn't allow any more than 256 ROMs to be tranferred via FTP then.   I'll have to play with it some more and see what I can come up with.

re: uploading failed after 256 files.  The problem is most likely that you are trying to upload a file that has invalid characters in it (such as "+", "/", etc.)  Search other forums for the list of valid XBox filename characters, but you can probably figure it out via trial and error by just removing non-alphanumeric characters one at a time until it goes through.  The filename length also must be less than 42 or 43 characters.

Any plans for 7z support? The huge space savings from GoodMerged ROM libraries are a wicked thing for those of us with smaller hard drives, even if the memory footprint is large. Maybe using the cache partitions on the HD would offset any memory issues?

Personally, I wouldn't mind a signifigant delay in game loading if I had the ability to load from inside a 7z'd file.

in my dash board , unleash x , the xboy advance icon is showing up for all my other xport emulators.

i have the xport emulators for gameboy advance , genesis , nes , and apple 2. my emulator  icons used to work properly , before i added xboy advance, and my nonxport icons still work. i modded four other xboxes and put the xport emulators on them too and they all had the same problem. i have tried deleting the game save from the u data folder and it takes away the icons but as soon as i use one of the emulators they all go back to xboy advance. this is not a serious issuse , just one of asthetics , any one got an idea or a link?

is this a bug or is there a fix for this xport icon problem?

I've noticed some sort of a memory deficency. (I think)

Basically, I'll play the metroid games, get pretty poor FPS and the game will only get about 75% speed, and then after playing for about 15 minutes, swapping around rooms and saving, it will suddenly run 99% speed (very few frame skipps) after entering a new room.

I'm guessing maybe the menu takes up a lot of memory and doesn't get flushed, or some process is taking up processor cycles.  I'm sorry that I can't give you any more specefics to debug.

my Xbox, but I feel it may not help much:

1.0 Xbox
Smart XX v2 chip
Evox M8 bios compatible IGR enabled
80gig Non-lockable HD (WD)
Only tried from Avalaunch .52 beta, have not tried other launchers.

Pangacow, the problems with Metroid aren't really Xport's fault. If you try out recent versions of VisualBoyAdvance you'll notice that the Metroid games have been getting slower with each update. The same thing has happened to the Xbox port when the source code is updated. It seems more of a timing bug to me as the emulator reports that it's running at 100% even though the game is clearly in slow motion. I assume it affects other games, but I couldn't say which.  If you want a  consistent playable speed on either Metroid GBA game use version 9 of XboyAdvance. With few exceptions the game remains full speed at 1 frameskip on that release (prior to the implementation of the 1.7.2 source code). Yeah, it sucks using such a feature deprived version, but unless VisualBoyAdvance itself starts getting speedier, I wouldn't expect XboyAdvance to do so either.

I've read the FAQs and cant seem to find the answer to my Q. (Although Im sure its been asked thousands of times)

If I were to burn an ISO of the Emulator onto a DVD-R with some Roms, Would it be able to run on my XB? If so, Would I be able to save straight to the HDD?

Also, Do more graphic-intense games run at normal speed? (RPGs like Final Fantasy and others liek Fire Emblem etc)

Thanks.

Do you have a Xenium modchip? I had this same problem and it turned out it was because I was transferring files while the Xbox was in the Xenium OS instead of another dashboard. Use the Evox or XBMC FTP servers to transfer files if you have a Xenium.

Hello. Sorry if this has been asked/answered already.... I didn't really have time to skim through all 5 pages. Anywhoo....

Let's say I had a Link to the Past/Four Swords ROM on my xbox. Would I and a friend be able to play the Four Swords aspect of it by simply plugging two controllers into the xbox? Or, is there another way, or no way? Please let me know. Thanks.

Also, let's say I had both the Golden Sun and Golden Sun:TLA ROMS on my xbox. If i were to beat golden sun, would it then be possible to transfer my game save over to the lost age, like the actual cartridges would?

Hi, I've tried the new No$GBA emulator for Windows...it has a cool feature you guys should consider adding. Having 4 games going at the same time...a GBA link on a single box. Is that possible to do on the Xbox console? If you could do this we could all finally play Four Swords! Lemme know

Is there a way to enable Real Time Clock so you can play Pokemon Emerald?

I've already used the IPS and SRAM patcher so it plays and saves on the PC version of VBA but you have to enable the RTC within VBA (options>emulator>real time clock) to get past that "Internal battery is dry" message when you start Emerald.

Can you enable RTC in XboyAdvance?

Thanks.

I remember seeing the 'real time clock' option when I started up a new game, that might fix your problem.

Anyways, here's mine: I cannot find any possible way to play Boktai. Is there a way to trick the game into thinking there's a solar sensor there?

For the sound bug thing, i believe the xbox is just not powerful enough to emulate the gba properly without frameskipping. If you check the readme again, i think it was refering to gb/gbcolor and not the gameboy advance for the sound timing fix. Im not sure, but every gba game I've tried to run always skipped on frameskip 0. Also, I read somewhere that the visualboy advance (which xboy is based on) has been getting slower with each new release. This I am sure of since some games that ran perfect with frameskip 0 on older builds started skipping when I got the latest version(i.e. golden sun 2).

A new VBA beta was released this week which finally corrects whatever timing bug was causing Metroid Zero Mission (and other games, I'm sure) to play slowly in areas even as the emu ran at "100%". With that in mind, this would be a really great update. I'm actually using V9 because that's the release before the bug was introduced, so of course I'm missing out on a ton of cool features I'd love to have access to. I know it's been asked before, but if you're still around Xport, do you intend to update the sources when the final 1.8.0 gets released?
Title: Xboyadvance Current Discussion
Post by: yodanut on October 09, 2005, 07:43:00 PM
Well, I don't know if anyone else has tried this new VBA release, but it is unquestionably a significant leap in performance. While frameskip is still required, slowdown and stutter are now rare at frameskip 1 and basically gone at frameskip 2. I can't find the link to the official source code, but I do know that it's out there since it was integrated into an unofficial (and seemingly now unnecessary) build. In any case, this would definitely be a great update for the Xbox build, so hopefully Xport hasn't lost all interest.

In XBoyAdvance there is two extra lines at the top of gba screen and two lines at bottom of gba screen is cut off. Top of gba screen also has white block about 16 pixels width and 2 pixels height.  Two games atleast have this problem Advance Wars 2 Euro multi 5 version, Tactics Ogre USA. Tested with version v17 and v15 same problem with both. White block and lines cutted are in screenshots taken too. Tested with VisualBoyAdvance and no problem.

Seems that problem i was talking about happens with every game. Screen is shifted two lines down so last two scanlines of gba screen are missing (cut off) and two top lines are black lines. These clipped&black lines are in screenshots too so it's not any kind of screen calibration thing hope this gets fixed too because some game puts stats & stuff so low eg.Ogre Tactics that sometimes hard to make out what they are because text that are printed to very bottom of the screen have two lines cut off from it's fonts.

Okay, here is a little problem my little sister started to play Pokemon Emerald again and i sadly got hooked up again (i loved red/blue in the old days) but the game needs a 128k save file i heard (i googled for the problem on vba forums) but is there a way to convert a 64k sav to a 128k save game?
I tried deleteing the .sav and changing the save game options to autodetect and 128k then starting a new game and saving it, i booted back to xbmc and i saw the .sav was 128k
I went back to xboy advance and loading a savestate a bit before when it needed to save.
after it saved i exited and returned to xbmc and i saw the .sav was 64k again!
Is the size stored in the savestate or something?
Or are she and I supposed to start over again?
I already clocked a nice 40h in it sad.gif

The known bug is when, you are playing a rom and the music skips continuously as if the game is messing up, But the music skips and the game flows nicely, It happens to every rome I play.

Not sure what's happening here, but if you can't get it to SRAM save, just use savestates instead. The savestate should just be the contents of memory, so it shouldn't included the rom settings. Check the game ini and see what that says. Just in case you don't know, you need to exit the emulator via the menu option to correctly save SRAM files. If you use IGR, it won't save.

Sounds like a frameskip option. Check what you have yours set to. I use the default of 2 and most games work fine, sound is fine. A few the sound will still skip and you need to change this figure (the new final fantasy games come to mind). If it's happening on every game I'd say it's some setting you have, since most work fine for me.

If you're unsure if you can play xboy on the xbox then you have a long way to go, so best you start reading. Start with the stickies in each forum, and the tutorials on the main page. Esp the xbins tutorial - that's where you'll get the latest versions.

Since you're "dumb" and "REALLY new to all this", let me give you some good advice...

Don't create posts like this - posts asking someone to explain everything to you.  There are numerous FAQs and help topics created for this purpose.  Posts like this will generally result in you being burned alive on the forums and/or having your questions completely ignored.  Do your homework like the rest of us did.

I've looked through not only the FAQs, but other questions as well and have had NO luck finding an answer to this problem. I've been playing The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX on XBoyAdvance and can't access the secret dungeon (which requires the game to be played on a gameboy color). The gameplay uses the game's GBC color scheme, not black and white, and yes, I have completed all game-related requirements to access this dungeon. From what I can tell, the game doesn't think it's being played on a gameboy color. I set the "Gameboy Type" to "GB/GBC" and tried again, but still, no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No, it is xboyadvance and it can be found on xbins. Google "how to access xbins" and you'll soon be on your way. You'll need a chat client, I use mIRC.

As far as the ftp thing, google how to ftp to an xbox. I usually set my X-Box IP to the same as my computer's IP except the last digit is one different. It makes things really easy to remember. (Go to Start...open run...type cmd...in the black box type ipconfig to find out your comp's IP.)

Use Flash FXP, it's much better than explorer when it comes to FTPing.

I hated having to figure out how to FTP to my box too, but once you get it you're golden. Of course at the time, I didn't even have internet access so I couldn't just google a solution.

If you have XBMC burn your apps to a CD-RW and copy them over that way if you don't have luck FTPing.

Feature Request:

First, a brief explanation: I HAVE read the FAQ, 3 times in fact (the 3 links confused me haha). I have read and understand your explanation to the question: "Why can't I get rid of the E:\SAVES\ ??"

Here's what I'm looking for, hopefully something you won't take offensively but rather as a way to help make Xboy Advance more tailored to meet different user prefferences:
Instead of ONLY having a E:\SAVES\*.ini file, can it be made that there be a default.ini file in root directory of the default.xbe file that directs to 1 of 2 options: a) tells the xbe file to reffer to E:\SAVES\*.ini for settings OR cool.gif tells the xbe file to reffer to [base_dir]\xboyadvance.ini

The default.ini file would be something very simple, for example:
     direct_to=E:\SAVES\xboyadvance\xboyadvance.ini
OR
     direct_to=[root_dir]\xboyadvance.ini

OR an even more simplified version can something as easy as:
use_root_dir=1   (where 0 = use 'E' drive, 1 = use [root_dir]\xboyadvance.ini)

So what I mean is, default.xbe would FIRST read default.ini which in turn would reffer to either the E: drive or the root directory.

I feel that this would accomodate:
- those that wish to burn xboyadvance to a CD and allow them to change their seetings and have them remember,
- those that wish to burn xboyadvance to a CD with the settings exactly as they like so they cant be changed,
and
- those that would like have xboyadvance installed on their HDD without needing the xbe file to refer to any external files other than those within it's own folder.

Please please PLEASE can you do this??? PLEASE!!!!! smile.gif

p.s. while your at it, is there anyway to make a save/load settings feature? I noticed if one is to manually edit the xboyadvance.ini file the app doesn't load and just freezes on a blackscreen. This sucks when I want to set it up on my friends xbox but instead of being able to just copy the settings over, I have to manually change everything again :s...

I hope you don't feel offended, I LOVE YOUR EMULATOR!!!, I just thought these two requests of mine would help tweak it in a small way and make a world of a difference for a lot of people. Thank you!!

That's because x-port set the emulator to default back to 2 (only occurs on games without save configs).  Probably to reduce complaints about games running to slow.  However the downside is it causes people to wonder why it resets back to 2....  blink.gif

Some people have upgraded motherboards with (I believe) twice the processing power.  A more common upgrade is upping the memory from 32MB to 64MB, but I've heard that other than arcades, there isn't much benefit to this.

Not something I'd ever bother with, but would probably be a cool option to put in there for users like DM.
