Title: Stepmaniax Current Discussion
Post by: XPort on August 28, 2004, 12:24:00 PM
This is the main discussion thread for the most recent version of StepmaniaX.

Use this thread to do any of the following:

Ask a question about StepmaniaX
Report a bug about StepmaniaX
Submit a feature request for StepmaniaX

Do not use this thread to post about projects other than StepmaniaX.
Do not post questions/bug reports/feature requests without first reading the FAQs for StepmaniaX.
Do not ask where these projects can be downloaded.

Rule violators will get one warning. After that, you will be temporarily or permanently banned depending on the situation.  I'm sorry if that sounds harsh, but it has taken me a cumulatively long time to write the FAQs for these projects.  If you cannot do me the courtesy of taking the time to read them, then I do not want you posting here.

This thread will be pruned/cleaned periodically.  If you had a question in this thread and it is now gone, then it was either in violation of the rules or your answer can now be found in the FAQs section.

I would like to see an update to StepmaniaX. Even though its not really necessary.. it would be great to see it with video support and using virtual memory so that more songs can be used without the program freezing or being laggy. Also support for disabling the analog sticks after configuring the screen size would be a nice feature also (maybe having to click on the analog sticks to enable/disable). There is another person working on another port of stepmania if you are interested in helping him heres a link to his blog site:

to be honest, i would like an update too, i'm not really that interested in upgrading the version, it just would be nice to have a few speed optimisations (characters, animations and announcers do lag the game quite a bit)

sorry if i'm asking too much, it's just it's one of the games i play the most  <

I am about to install version 5 and some more additional songs.
The issue I am not guite aware of, is the file syntax = naming.
- Is there something I should do for the file names ?
- Are "()#[] or such a special chars working ?
- Are the files MP3 or should I convert them to something else? (wma)

All advices welcome. Thanks

I'd like to see support for Pump it Up.   I can select it from the Select Game menu, but it doesn't seem to have any keys mapped by default and it hangs as soon as the How to Play screen would normally come up.  <

I would love to see an update to this as well...perhaps it would make more sense to wait until stepmania 4.0 is released though.....either way, an update would rock  <

I love StepManiaX, but apparently there was a bug fixed in 3.9a8 and above of StepMania about arrows missing for no reason. That bugfix is the main reason I'm humbly requesting an update to StepManiaX.  smile.gif   <

they were talking about the pc version of stepmania as its at 3.9 alpha 22 right now. the xbox version of stepmania used the 3.9 alpha 7 sources (which is stepmaniax_v5)  <

Bhaa, that different then as I thoug this was for Stepmania Xbox version.

Anyway I am right now uploading the songs and those brackets are
an obvious problem except () e.g ELECTRICAL PARADE (Retro Future Mix)
had no problems to be copied.

Well for those who are doing this first time a hint. Sounds (dirs) have to be
copied to under songs/sample/

Well that's it

its been known that stepmaniax v5 has had a problem with too many songs when loading for the first time (i had 683 songs and it would freeze after some songs would be written to the cache) the weird thing is that if you use stepmaniax v2 (a clean installation) for the first time with a lot of songs it doesnt freeze at all (thats also with 683 songs). now im wondering since v2 was based from the pc versions alpha 6. the problem probably lies in alpha 7 (currently in stepmaniax v5).

xport, maybe you can redo stepmania 3.0 fix the nasty bugs that plagued stepmania v1 (making a 1:1 port of the pc version with no probs), instead of waiting for the newer stepmania alphas or even 4.0 to come out for pc. that would be good enough i think. Sorry for asking too much, but your ports seem so flawless. playing stepmaniax is the only reason why i shunned my ddr ps2 versions.

Has anything been done in StepmaniaX to solve the problem of accidently stepping on letter spaces of the pad during a song? Like in DDR games, they've got an option that turns off those buttons during songs  <

to disable the other buttons on the dance pad you can just remap the buttons in the options menu.. but make sure you have a usb keyboard that can work for your xbox (theres tuts to show how to make an adapter) because you cannot map the buttons without one.  <

I would also like to disable the buttons, without using a keyboard.  I already spent money on the pads, I don't want to go out and get a keyboard and all that too.  <

You can find several prewritten keymaps.ini files on the net. Once you have one that disables the buttons, FTP into your xbox and put it in StepmaniaX's Data directory, I believe.   <

Screen resize in the Stepmania X

Is there somewhere an option/menu that would directly disable
the screen resizing? Reason is that my daughter, 5 years of old
always manages to change it to unusable and locking it would be
best solution.

The biggest feature I'd like to see is loading songs and stepfiles from a samba share.  That's one of the nicest features in the other XPort emulators since the Xbox hard drive is so small.

Solution for 500-600 song limitation ?

I just came to idea that when I have so much songs that the size
of the StepmaniaX + all songs are going to stuck the XBox (due
the lack of memory I quess) - I will simply burn a bootable
StepmaniaX DVD
and erase those burned songs from the HD.
- Then put the new songs to HD and when they are going to reach
the limits then buurrrrrrrrn a new DVD again.

If and whenever needing those older songs, I boot the StepmaniaX
DVD 1 and if needed others ones, well you got the idea.

That sounds like an awful lot of work that's unneeded.  I just made 3 seperate folder for Stepmania, each with its own category of songs.  (Arcade, Originals, Video Game Songs, etc.)  Each folder has from 50-350 songs and I haven't had a problem yet.

Hhmmm... am I now in the wrong tracks but isnt Stepmania X (XBOX) version
loading all the songs to memory at once ? You can, ofcource make own folders in
the XBox version also BUT they all are loaded to memory at the same time.
If you know another solution for this, please tell

Now if you are talking about the PC version, that might act in a defferent way like
it does with the filenames. As mentioned earlier {[]} are not understood in XBox
but are fine for PC.
Also, as PC'd has usually more memory than 64 MB it can handle those additional songs.

I would like to know what Platform/hw you are using (PC/XBOX/MAC/other)

On the Hard Drive :

Limitation solved I think! I pitched in every single mix I had (MANY songs), and it still works! Song loading is zippy too!

I have a keymaps ini file that disables the buttons and also includes the pump keymaps (not sure if alpha 7 supports it, but 22 does). I have nowhere to host so anyone who wants it or has somewhere to host it just PM me. The new version allows remapping the controls using the xbox controller, but you still need a semi-functioning keymaps file to access the option at the moment.

The new version has a separate option for resizing the screen and the analog sticks will not resize the screen by default.

I think if you check the CVS logs you'll see that I've "pitched in" quite a bit already.

It's nice that someone else has finally managed to compile the Stepmania project on XBox for themselves, and I can understand your perfervidness.  However, please remember to maintain some amount of deference to the actual Stepmania developers :

If more songs load now before crashing it is almost certainly because either A) there was a memory leak in the core code that was corrected by the Stepmania developers or cool.gif Each song requires a smaller memory footprint than previously due to changes in the core by the Stepmania developers.  Every song still has to be loaded from the cache during startup and some amount of information for each song needs to be stored in memory.  Therefore, there will still be a memory constraint issue.  More songs may be able to be loaded in this version, but there will still be a breaking point.

If song loading is any "zippier" than before then that is also due to core changes by the Stepmania developers.

If you were to do something like implement some form of virtual memory (the code I wrote for this is easily obtainable in the current MAMEoX sources) so that there would truly be no limitation to the amount of songs one can load at one time, then that would be a notable accomplishment.

Similarly, if you were to get movie files working (AVI, etc) then that would actually impress me because it would show that you've done more than recompile the project and possibly tweak some things here/there to get it running on the XBox.

Xport:

Thanks for the tips. And don't take our speech as "WE DID ALL OF IT", cause it's not what we want. Yes, we are VERY happy, but we don't want to take credit for anything we did not do. We only made small patches to the actual tree, and we succeeded in running step! Again, we don't want to take credit for anything we did not accomplish. We did not do anything THAT BIG.

So, to everyone : you may well thank us for having worked through the initial updating of the tree so that Step works on Xbox as of the recent versions. BUT, you may not give us cookies for anything else. Xport is the one to thank for initiating the idea and making the initial port. And the Stepmania developers are to be thanked for the other bugs.

Finally, I am not the one to thank. I am the one that THANKS. tvStatic is a skilled guy, because he actually updated features, where what I did was, up to now, only debugging jobs. I'm not skilled in C++, I do it for fun without any solid background. So if there's something new as in a cool feature, thank tvStatic, not me.

Just to make sure I'm not misunderstood - my previous post was not about me.  I don't claim much credit myself.  The Stepmania developers, in my book, should take full acclaim.

lp2000 - Well, it's not so much about the songs for me as it is the steps.  I used a program called Dancing Monkeys to automatically generate some stepfiles for some of my favorite tunes.  It actually works quite well.  Some specifics I like - Black Cat, Love Tropicana, Butterfly, Candy, Orion 78 (Civ mix), Asereje, Ari Ari, Be Lovin, La Copa De La Vida, Tsugaru, Afronova Primeval, Exotic Ethnic, I Like to Move It.  (Most of those are redone by Dancing Monkeys, though.  I find that I like a lot of tunes and feel that have great potential but then the stepmakers just make something silly.)

Did you completely miss the last few posts?

Anyway, as I stated on my webpage, I'm waiting for a milestone release of the Stepmania project before doing another port.  I've heard from one of the Stepmania developers who tells me that a release candidate will be appearing soon, so it looks like another "final" will be up in the near future as well.  When that happens, I'll work on porting it again.

No, sorry, I have absolutely no interest in trying to coordinate work efforts with other people.  I also have no interest in porting more "alpha" releases since a RC/final version is not too far off in the distance.

HAVE NO EVOX, WANT TO PLAY STEPMANIA X ?

I dont know, seems to me that people here are having guite a
tight discussion and speaking/writing is done in a way that it
sticks always an other.

Well I let you consentrate to your big issues making big solutions
and try not to disturb you. For those who agree with me and possible
does not have Evox stuff on HD or other setups in the XBox I will tell
some things I found out from Stepmania X v5. Hope this helps you
to get this nice program to work.

Xbox seems not run Stepmania X v5 if yoy have more than 75
songs on the CD/DVD media in one set.
- I had 145 songs, in 6 groups. Program froze before all songs where
loaded.

- Finally I game to 82 songs in 3 groups. Now program started and all
songs were loaded but the aplication crashed so I am guessing 40 might
be fine. 30 songs did not had any problems and dealy was minimal in the
menus too.
If you clearly can see the delay in the menus while navigating, then
it is a sign of borderline and decreasing songs might be good.

Most possible this is Xbox issue, not Stepmania X issue Just a note
for those who disagree because on HDD this problem is not appearing.

Again, how to fix this ? Sound dummy but make on the DVD identical copies
of Stepmania with Startmenu, but adding only a limited amouns of tunes
under the songs directory.  wink.gif

I got the impression that in the last weeks or so the stepmania team (?) got Stepmania working for XBox. The CVS says it works (although only on an evox m7 bios or something). I've downloaded the CVS but haven't had the time to compile and try it.

No more issues with the amount of songs biggrin.gif

So Will XPort be the official candidate for release Stepmania/StepmaniaX on the Xbox, or are we to asume that its now developed by the Stepmania team... Exscuse my confusion, but I'm not sure, just curious

[EDIT]

Nevermind, re-read some posts and understand better, cheers.

(Still going to try compiling that CVS)

Just make multiple copies of Stepmania~~~~~
  1)  Take the base files of Stepmania and make 3 copies of them.  Stepmania1, Stepmania2, Stepmania3.
  2)  Put a chunk of the songs in the first one.  Put another chunk of songs in the second one.  Repeat for the 3rd.
  3)  Put a seperate link for each Stepmania xbe into your dashboard menu.
  4)  Play

It won't let you play with all 2100 songs at once, but with each copy of Stepmania holding about 500~ songs, you should be able to live with it.

Installed StepmaniaX today on the X, have a few questions ok?

My characters don't have any textures too them, whats wrong?

Whats PUMP? when i select it my xbox freezes with a looping sound!

What tools do you guys use to rename the song files and directories to work with FATX (remove: , + over 42chars etc) i have over 100 songs and some can't be copied.

Is it easy to make your own song files, are there any tools etc?

Video would be lovely but i'm sure it's coming  beerchug.gif

Here are some of my feature requests:
Video Support
Being able to make and save preset controller schemes like being able to have a control pad mode and and a dance pad mode so it's more like the DDR home versions.
Ability to save/read profiles from memory cards.
Making editing stepfiles and courses controller friendly.
HiDef Support (1080i *drool*)
Better ability to take screenshots, like being able to use a controller on port 3/4 and being able to have it at the resolution that the game is currently running (if HD resolution is used, then it takes it at HD not the default 640x480 etc)
Support for the SmartXX LCD and Xecuter3's XLCD that shows various stats etc etc.

I know that's too much but that's my wishlist.
Thanks for the great port.

I have a similar problem. Occasionally my second pad will stop recognizing button presses altogether...even when it *is* still plugged in. Unplugging the pad and plugging it back in does nothing, and the only remedy for this problem that I know of is resetting the stepmania.

Another problem I have, is that once you change your arrows so that they are hidden, you cannot change them back without resetting stepmania...it appears to not save the setting, unless I am missing something.

(using stepmania 5 and a bunch of songs.)

i have a shortcut in evox directly to stepmaniaX.  when i pick it, it hangs on the loading screen.  if i go to avalaunch (from evox) and go applications->stepmania, it loads fine.  when in stepmania, if i exit it (using the menu option) and go back to evox, the menu shortcut works fine.  if i use the in-game-reset or the power button, the shortcut doesnt work after booting.

this doesnt happen with anything else, so it seems like a stepmaniax issue.  anyone experienced this and have a fix?

thank you.

as the Random Movies or Visualizations don't work, i do (what i think to be) the next best thing. i take the little movie AVI files, and cut them into PNG frames. 640 x 480 frames per image. e.g., if i need 4 frames to make it look a movie, the png image has to be 1280 x 960, called something like "1 Tile 2x2." this works for a lot of movies, but i have to turn the resolution down really low to keep it from freezing. well, low, but it's nothing terrible. if anyone knows a better way to make a png image fill the entire screen ONE AT A TIME, i want to know how.

what i ask is that if the movies still can't be run as movies in stepX, maybe you could allocate more memory so the larger sprites can run at a higher resolution or use more random sprite folders per song. if necessary i'd send you five of the folders i made so you can see what i mean.

on a side note, i said most of this before, but my post disappeared. i wish that didn't happen, but it does

I have some problems getting StepmaniaX to work on my xboxes.

I got StepmaniaXv5 from Xbins, so it should work i guess.
Even a clean install doesn't help me.

The program works fine in demo mode.
But when i want to play myself it locks up just after choosing the demo song.

I have tried it on 2 xboxes, both with the same problem.

The only difference is that both Xboxes have 128MB RAM installed. But this has never been any problem with MameoX for example.

The logfile shows that stepmaniax even has support for it.

the 128 shouldn't be the problem, but try a normal xbox and see if it works there. someone's gotta have one, right?

there are tons of reasons why it could lock up. maybe you have too many songs being introduced at once. i know that i can't seem to throw in more than two "mixes" at a time when i have a new HDD. talk about what things are in your stepmania folder. animations, number of songs, characters, etc.

FuzzyLogic: You could also try creating those two missing files by copying one of the other png files (say ScreenSelectMusic stage 6.png) and naming it stage 7 and 8.

I too am having a problem with Stepmaniax.
After months of trying different things, I finally just redownloaded the archive, adn installed it fresh, and it solved my problems.
and replaced them with completely new ones.

Only one of my Dance Mats is working with Stepmaniax. Only one of them is mapped I suppose. Is there a way around this? I live in a dorm with many people who love DDR, and I wopuld love for Stepmaniax to be working two at a time.

Has anyone had any success in adding characters to stepmaniax?  I found some to install online, and put them in, but it doesn't apply the textures.  Its just a big white ghost bobbing around.

Is there a fileformat other than .bmp that the textures need to be converted to?  I will check the stepmania changlog to see what they've changed in the character section since alpha 7, but if someone else has got this working and knows how to fix it, it'd be a big help.

Thanks.

Edit:

I tried changing the images to png and jpg, and changing the ini and txt files to reflect the filename changes, but the issue persists.

Any help would be fantastic!

characters are fine. they do work as bmp's. you probably need the bones files. google'll probably work.

Weird.  I have the bones files.

Let me know if I've got it setup right, if you may.  I'd really like to get these working.

I just got the smzip files, installed them on the PC, and copied the Characters folder over to the xbox, then enabled characters.

My characters folder:

http://www.d8i.com/Characters.txt

Thanks again, and thanks for your reply.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, they seem to work fine on the PC.

for some reason, every single character folder you have has a space or a "." in the name. i have 49 character folders, and they're all fine except for some glitched up ulala character i need to fix. pick one character folder and fix its name. take the others until you find out if that's the problem.

i don't have this file. probably doesn't matter...."Characters\default\CVS\Tag"

ok, ignore all that. seems like it's the model.txt files. perhaps the folders you have are too new to work on a version this outdated. sucks, but you'll have to find older characters for now.

[Edit] yes, the model.txt files in your folders use a "vram" bmp sheet. it has all the color character parts on it, and i guess the vram sheet is cut up where it's needed when the new stepmania accesses it. the older character folders (like mine) don't do this. it does it the hard way. it seems easier to program, but it's totally useless for this port.

Can someone tell me if the USB adapters that work for the computer version, such as the EMS PS2 to USB adapter with two Playstation 2 ports, will be easily compatible with SMX? If I get a modded Xbox with a USB port or two in the back, can I just plug in my current PS2 to USB adapter or do I have to go buy some PS2 to Xbox controller adapters?
Title: Stepmaniax Current Discussion
Post by: xechoxx on December 28, 2004, 09:44:00 PM
I don't think you'd be able to plug them into a USB port onto the xbox, but maybe drivers to support USB pads could be made, I don't have enough knowledge to know what the process is for that.

but you can find a list of compatible PS2 to USB converters on the stepmania website.

Is there any particular reason why they wouldn't work? It's one of the most highly recommended adapters for SM on the PC, which is why I got it. It works with every version of DWI or SM I've tried it with to date, so is there any reason why it wouldn;t work in the USB port? I'm looking for the cheap solution to hook dance pads to my Xbox, see, and I already use the adapter for my computer with SM....so will I absoutely have to buy PS2 to Xbox converters??
Title: Stepmaniax Current Discussion
Post by: tagler on January 04, 2005, 10:37:00 PM
it's cause the game itself doesn't have usb support for the pads
Title: Stepmaniax Current Discussion
Post by: Skippydzg on January 05, 2005, 08:04:00 AM
Just to clarify...it doesn't have USB support...you mean SM doesn't? Or just the Xbox port of SM? And from what I understand, aren't the Xbox controllers just modded USB ports? *confuzzled* It's sad if it won't work, though. Then I'd have to buy the freakin expensive adapters...where can I get cheap ones? ^^ Are there any that have like where you buy only one adapter and can plug two PS@ controllers into it, instead of buying two single adapters?

So just to nail this down, the current only solution to playing a large number of songs on Stepmania is by creating Stepmania1, 2, and so on with ~500 songs in each? But the final version will be ported soon, and will not have the song limitation?

In theory, it should. But for some reason, it doesn't. The pad will have all of the lights functioning properly and everything, but not recognize any inputs. Can't imagine why that is, though, maybe someone can update the keyboard mappings on the OS to support USB game pads? That's be nice.

You were running it off of D? Meaning, the DVD drive? Why's that?
Anyways, don't load them all at once. Go in and load about 50 songs or so so they're in the cache, then move another 50 or so in there at a time until you've loaded them all. It takes a little while, but usually works.
You overloaded the Ram by trying to put about a billion songs in there simultaneously, when usually it reads most of the songs from a cache file and just scans for new ones.
Title: Stepmaniax Current Discussion
Post by: kilokahn on April 23, 2005, 11:31:00 PM
Actually newp, didn't load from D, put them into the normal directory.  I dunno why it shows D.

So essentially put a directory in there at a time then go from there?  Will it build the entire list once it's complete?

Also, is there a way to list all the songs in A, B, C order or do I have to make the directory list show that way?

Thanks,

Chris

I've been hearing people say that there are revisions of keymaps.ini floating around on the net that will take care of the problem of ABXY being mapped to arrows (when using dance pads). I didn't find any, so I submit this quick and dirty fix for y'all: http://plautus.kundor.org/Keymaps.ini  Just drop that file in the "Data" folder under your StepManiaX folder, overwriting the file that was there.

This makes it so only the arrows on the pad map to the arrows in the game, and the B button maps to the upper left arrow, and A maps to the upper right arrow (that's how all XBOX pads are laid out, right?), so you can play Solo mode on pad 1 or pad 2. In modes besides Solo and menus, the buttons ABXY don't do anything.

I'd be glad to know if this works for other people.

I really like StepManiaX to Xbox, that was a extremly good idea. But ONE thing is bugging me.
In Alpha 7, there were a keyboard support (I'm using the little adapter you got when you ordered Xenium Ice S.P.), but the sync were terrible.
But later, the sync become really good, perfect I must say. But why in the **** world did you took away the Keyboard support. I'm a big fan of DDR and StepMania, have played DDR for almost 4 years now and StepMania with keyboard 2 years. So i'm just wondering why you took away the kyeboard support, I can spare like 0,1 MB of text or more if necessary, just so I can play StepManiaX with keyboard.
So Pleeeeeeeeease, add it back again, I must have it!

Hi.

I downloaded and installed Stepmania X, and when I launch it from Unleashed X (latest version) I get the startup screen (the yellowish graphic) for a moment as it initalizes, and then it immediately quits back to unleashed x.  I've tried this on three different xboxes all modded with a xenium and varios versions of the MB, and same probelm.

(I've loaded songs, removed songs, used support files from a mac and PC version, and now reinstalled a virgin copy.... no luck for me at all!)

I have two questions:

1.  If I buy a ps2 to xbox adaptor for my ps2 pads will they work without lag?
2.  I need an xbox renaming tool that does recursive directories.  All of the tools only do one directory at a time and my stepmania folder has over 2000 folders in it.  I have tried using Prexboxcopytool but I get a runtime error each time.

Neither v4 nor v5 work AT ALL for me. Both simply freeze the Xbox at the "EvolutionX" splash screen. v1 worked perfectly. I've tried deleting everything from the HD before I install the new version, I've tried burning to DVD instead of FTPing, I've tried running from the .XBE file instead of the Games menu, but the Xbox just doesn't want to know. Any clues?

What I would like to see in StepManiaX is a customizable song directory. As in, you can change the default "Song" Directory to be in in D or F or C drives, instead of just as a subdirectory of SMX. That would make DVD Drive playing easier to handle, at least.

Post by: rbgrn on September 11, 2005, 07:59:00 PM
I tried StepmaniaX 2.9 alpha5?(I think) out today on a friend's xbox over at my place and observed the following problems:

1) I had to step maybe 5-10 ms early to hit magnificents (I know, I can probably calibrate it but xbox is standard hardware so it should be set correctly in the binary as default)

2) We couldn't remap any keys without a keyboard (come on guys, that's an easy fix)

3) We couldn't enter any profile names without a keyboard. A simple solution would be to have a simple A-Z text entry scrollable via up/down arrows for now.

4) We had problems with stepmania crashing when either there were too many files (we think) or maybe it didn't like some of the sm's or filenames, not sure right now. I didn't mess with this personally, but the guy who did claimed he just had to delete the first few songpacks and then everything worked.

5) It doesn't save Song-play options (I kept having to repick 1.5 solo, etc..)

6) It doesn't save which song you were on last, or what your sort order was

7) There's no way to specify default difficulty (this isn't in the pc version either, but it really should be)

Overall my experience was ok, but I'm not going to go out and buy an xbox and mod it for this as of yet. I'd say that for this game to be solid on the xbox platform, the developers need to fix the lack of saving, go through all the areas where it's assumed you have a keyboard and come up with pad-based input methods, and make the song loader a little more crash-proof.

Remember guys, it's the little things that make software really feel polished and give users a really positive experience.

I tried re-install it, completely fresh with no modifications, but it didn't work.

I read somewhere that StepmaniaX might not work with certain bioses, so I tried different versions EvoX and Xecuter bioses, but still always the same. I try to start the stepmaniax.xbe, but nothing, just hangs up at the loading screen.

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. It should work, I'm using the latest version of StepmaniaX with only one song for testing purposes,Xbox ver 1.5, DuoX2 chip and I tried both bioses. Can't figure anything else that could be wrong. I'm tired of playing DDR with it's lame songs, so please, any suggestions would be helpful.
...and please don't say I just have to wait for the next version and hope it works.

Done that. Tried to boot it off from XBMC, Evox and even boxplorer. Nothing, just freezes.
Strange thing is, stepmaniax works on my brothers Xbox. It has exactly the same bios that I've tried several times, the same chip and all. The _only_ difference is the version of the box, which is 1.6.
Still, I'm keeping up hopes that the next version of StepmaniaX would somehow magically work.

Try going into the MS dashboard and verify your system clock is set correctly.  I have this same problem every time my clock gets goofed up.

hey xport, i just recently picked up v12, and i must say, great job with it! i pretty much looked at every stepmaniax thread and found that there's a memory issue with running themes and such. i tried running techno fiend 3/3.1 because that's what i use on regular stepmania, and it obviously locked up...but when i went to the log file there was nothing referring to the memory as the issue.

i havea 64mb xbox because i don't think i'm capable of doing a memory mod, it's kinda too much for me, but what are ways i can free up memory? i tried disabling my announcer and turning the resolution, color quality, and texture resolution down.

if there isn't any other way, what skins have been tested to work?

Hey, I'm a newbie to Stepmania, I'd like to ask a couple of questions.

I have Stepmania for PC and I've only recently learned that I can put it on my soft-modded Xbox. Now, is there a difference in files in the PC version and Xbox version, or are they from the same download package off the website? Is stepmania 3.9 the same as Stepmania X v5?

If they are different, how would I get the required Xbox files. I read that there's a Stepmania.xbe file required to run the game. I can't seem to find the file online. Perhaps look on IRC? Or if someone here has that file, PM me.

Any positive feedback would be greatly appreciated. Have a good day.

I have a few questions about the new StepManiaX v12.

1. How can I move the arrows so the first & the second player arrows are aligned? The second player's arrow are too far to the right, so I wanna know how to fix this.

2. Is there any way to get rid of the "Hold start to exit" while playing a stage?

3. How can I change the difficulty on the Extra stages?

4. How can I get rid of the "Toasty" animation & sound?

5. How can I map the A button to press start, have it as a down arrow button & access the options menu like in the DDR series? Is it possible?

I hope these questions aren't to much. Thanx

Question for a yet newbie guy,

On DDR ultramix song selection:
I just press right or left to select my songs, and the game
shows me a sample of the track every new song I select.

On Stepmania:
I press right or left to see the next track, and the game do not play
this track, instead it plays a defulat music or something like that.
I need to press right, then start and right again, to see "really" the
next song.

So, I need to keep pressing right, start, right to change (and listen)
what wil be my next song, for all 100 sings I have installed.

Is this some sort of configurable issue?
Sorry for my poor english, folks!

Cheers,
C.

Background videos are not implemented in the XBox version.  This is not something I'm going to be doing.  All the XBox code has been merged into the official CVS, so anyone can do what they want with it.

If you have changed the screen size/position then the character placement will not work correctly.  Reset the size/position to the defaults and they will probably appear.  If they do not, then I do not know what the problem is.

I'd really like to get 12 to work since I can center the screen with it, but not 5. If anyone has suggestions as to what I should do here... by all means, suggest.

I had the same problem, and it turned out that I had copied BGAnimations and Visualizations from my LInux computer into the StepmaniaX folders on the XBox.
So in order to get the game playing I had to go into the options and make sure that animations and visualizations were turned off. As soon as I did that the problem went away.

I think I read (I might be wrong here, my memory isn't what it once was) on an Xport moderated forum that these features aren't supported and he isn't planning on updating StepmaniaX beyond the V12 release. So you may also want to just delete your animations and visualizations off the XBox to save yourself the time and headaches.

Hope this helps!

Still no luck despite cleaning out all the folders and doing a reinstall, then turning off animations/etc completely.

All songs continue to crash 5-30 seconds in, usually with a loop of the last half-second or so played, and I have to turn off the Xbox as a soft-reset via a controller does not work.

Since others are not having the same difficulty, there must either be a problem with your XBox or with your StepMania installation.

Basic troubleshooting:
Try starting all over again. Delete your StepManiaX folder from the XBox and then re-decompress and reinstall the files out of the StepManiaX distribution from wherever you got it.
Make sure it boots.
Copy in one song or a small songmix and try it out. If it fails, delete the songs and add a different small selection. If it still fails, re-download StepManiaX from wherever you got it and reinstall again.
Once you get to the point where StepmaniaX is functional, add one songmix at a time until your symptoms reappear or--perhaps!--don't reappear.

You'll either be home-free or will realize that your XBox is somehow very subtly hosed.

According to the FAQ, StepmaniaX isn't supposed to be used on X2-4977. This happens to be the version I'm using, and I don't seem to have any problems related to that (I'm hitting RAM limits though). This is driving me crazy

I downloaded v12 from the normal place

I downloaded StepMania 3.9 from the site.

I took the stuff from 3.9 and put it into the folders in v12

I put in 1 song just to make sure it would work

I deleted the stepmaniax on my xbox along with the stepmaniax in the saves folder and everything in my Tdata and Udata.

I ftp over the brand new fresh copy.

Every single time it hangs at

"Loading courses.... Samples Tournamix 4 sample crs"

Doesnt' even write an error to the log file, it just freezes

I deleted the sample courses out of the dir and it still hangs trying to load a course that's not there.

I didn't think courses were even necessary if you have the songs set up right?

WTF am I doing wrong?

Please help, I have been trying to find an answer reading threads for hours.

You don't need anything from the Windows version of Stepmania.  Just unpack StepmaniaX v12 (exactly as it is) to a folder on your XBox - then run the XBE in that folder.

Hey everyone, I recently whooped out my xbox dance pads again and decided on installing the StepmaniaX 4.0 CVS package that is available on the web. However, unfortunately I have the following problem:

The first time I use the program, no problem whatsoever. However, the second time I start it, the game gives me a blank (black) screen after the song loading screen.
When I reinstalled the game, it would run normally again, but only for a single run.

I used the linux utility 'diff' to compare my game files after it's initial run with the original files I downloaded, and I noticed that the following setting is automatically changed in my preferences.ini:

CODE
alexander@odyssey ~/Desktop/StepmaniaX4CVS/Save $ diff Preferences.ini Preferences2.ini
52c52
< DisplayHeight=576
---
> DisplayHeight=480

576 is the amount of lines on a PAL monitor if I'm not mistaken, but resetting the file to it's original "480" value solves my problem. I've tried changing my programs PAL/NTSC settings, and tried starting the game from both EvoX and XBMC, but nothing seems to help. I wrote a little script to manually reset the file before I want to play, but I'd prefer to solve this problem instead of work around it.

I'm running an Xbox 1.6 on a PAL widescreen television using XBMC Atlantis as my primary dashboard.

Anybody have a clue? Or perhaps a guide for building a xbox release from the latest stepmania svn. I really enjoy the changes that 4.0 brings, so I'd hate to have to abandon it.
