Title: Fceultrax Current Discussion
Post by: XPort on August 28, 2004, 11:10:00 AM
This is the main discussion thread for the most recent version of FCEUltraX.

Use this thread to do any of the following:

Ask a question about FCEUltraX
Report a bug about FCEUltraX
Submit a feature request for FCEUltraX

Do not use this thread to post about projects other than FCEUltraX.
Do not post questions/bug reports/feature requests without first reading the FAQs for FCEUltraX.
Do not ask where these projects can be downloaded.

Rule violators will get one warning. After that, you will be temporarily or permanently banned depending on the situation.  I'm sorry if that sounds harsh, but it has taken me a cumulatively long time to write the FAQs for these projects.  If you cannot do me the courtesy of taking the time to read them, then I do not want you posting here.

This thread will be pruned/cleaned periodically.  If you had a question in this thread and it is now gone, then it was either in violation of the rules or your answer can now be found in the FAQs section.

Heya, Xport. I'm rather glad you now have your own separate forum, so that combing through the Emulators section just to find people who want to talk to you is now a thing of the past. I do have a question for you, regarding FCEUltra and the lightgun support.

Just as MAMEoX once had difficulty with dark zones, so does FCEUltra. Well, maybe. You see, I wanted to ask you if you had problems with dark zones and/or certain colors when trying to target. Haven't been able to figure out if it's my model of gun (X-Gunner Mark II, the Cheapass special) or the state of the lightgun engine. I must say, after your recent MameOX lightgun upgrade, I have had no problems with calibration or keeping focus, whereas whilst playing Gotcha! on NES, The cursor would veer right at the sight of orange, and would be completely irratic in darkness ("Adventures of Bayou Billy," as an example).

The reason for this post was my general curiousity as to whether or not we were gonna see a lightgun upgrade for FCEUltraX next. If not, that's entirely up to you, I suppose. Perhaps you have some other upgrade in mind, like some sort of VR thing where we jump into the game like some sort of twisted Captain N plotline. I learn not to doubt the power of the Xport.

Keep the peace.

I have not heard of any problems people were having with light guns in FCEUltraX in the most recent version.  I have not tried those games you mentioned, but I'll get around to it at some point.

Just upgraded from ver 15 to ver 16, and tested the lightgun. Except for being able to change the color of the crosshair in the targeting screen, not much has changed. Still cannot hit reliably in Gotcha! (not that this is my favorite game... but it was a test subject), and Bayou Billy has improved slightly.

Again, MAMEoX works great, so I'm sure that fine-tuning in spare time will fix it. I have faith in you.

I would like to request two things.

1. Reset Function

2. When you exit a game from your favorites section, it should go back to the game you exited, not to the beginning of your favorites list.

I've noticed #2 in your latest xboyadvance release. Are you planning on adding these features to this emu, or maybe, to all of your other classic emulators?
And if not, why? Thank You.

I would also like a reset function. Could you also release the newest version of this emulator from the PC version, version 0.98.12?

first i would like to say that xport, this is awesome, your finally taking requests  biggrin.gif  love.gif

these are things i would like to see, they kind of speak for all your emulators though

all the things that infedelity said and a flicker filter

actaully i could care less about the flicker filter but it would be nice to have for the other people that actaully like it

and definatley could you please, please get around to porting the latest fce ultra thats been out for awhile, there are a whole bunch of games that the version thats out already doesn't support maps for alot of the games ex. donkey kong country 4

these are mostle hacks

Reading your notes, I understand that you'd probably have to "start from scratch", but this is an emulator definitely worthy of being brought up to speed with it's PC cousin.  Besides being able to play more "hacks", the sound is massively improved (listen to the battle music in FF3j on the current Xbox version and then compare it to the PC) MMC5 fixes that will enable Just Breed to play correctly (works now but is buggy - you gain levels after every battle, which is not the way the game is supposed to work - this has been duplicated on the equivalent PC port, but works fine on the latest source) I'm sure there are a few other good reasons, and having the GUI brought up to the level of your latest emulators would be much appreciated.  Since you probably have bigger and more interesting things being worked on at the moment, maybe you could save this until there's a .99 release of FCEUltra, if you ever do get around to updating.  Great job in any case!

I agree that it is worthwhile to have the Xbox FCE Ultra brought up to date with the PC FCE Ultra: huge sound improvements, additional mapper support, bug fixes, and emulation accuracy improvements.  It is easily one of the best, most accurate console emulators EVER!  Most other emulators don't even try to obtain the level of emulation accuracy that FCE Ultra has.

This problem is compounded with the fact that the current Xbox FCE Ultra has some technical benefits over the PC version, especially with regards to ultra-smooth, flickerless, shearless, tearless scrolling and graphics.

So I guess people want the best of both worlds, Xodnizel's recent improvements and XPort's improvements.

On another note, what about a flicker filter option in the XPort FCE Ultra?
Also, is it theoretically possible to add USB HID game controller support to homebrew XBOX software?  That would let people use the recently made NES to USB adapters and modifications:
http://www.sealiecom....com/retrozone/

Using the real NES controller has advantages as the XBOX controllers have a D-pad in which it is far to easy to accidentally hit the diagonals when you intended to hit a pure left, right, up, or down motion on the D-pad.  In Super Mario Bros, for example, this causes problems with crouching and sliding.  Diagonal down doesn't result in a crouch.  This typically isn't a problem with NES and SNES style D-pads.

Anyway, Xport, thanks for the great software... I am going to keep my fingures crossed hoping that we all someday see "the best of both worlds".

There were a few things that I was hoping would get implemented, such as a native resolution of the NES (or close to it) so it's not blurry or scaled (I think it should also line up on the screen like a real NES, no stretching or moving... maybe a "native" mode in the scaling options is needed).

And also there is a need of a palette that is closer to what a real NES outputs (I realise you say you haven't implemented a "custom" palette feature in your faq... but, even if you didn't allow for a custom pallete file like the PC version does, at least replace the one you use). IMBNes already does both of those things, and it looks quite nice on a TV (s-video NES!)... even if IMBNes lacks a lot of features/mappers FCEUltra has. Sadly, not even NesterDC for Dreamcast does these things, either. It's just, as a side by side comparison... the colours look nothing like a real NES, and it's not as clear, either... (even with simple2x)...  Just take a look at SMB, the colour is way off.  I just thought, since the NES ran off the TV, it could be easier to closely imitate on another system that runs off a TV.

There were a handful of palette files on the net that tried to be as close as possible to the real NTSC NES... but only one, I noticed, was the most accurate. My main computer is down at the moment, so I can't pull it off my hardrive or tell you which one it was.

Anyways, just a thought.

Just a note, the xbox can not create the same native resolution as a NES.  I think the lowest it can go is 640x480 (anybody?).

But...  If you resize your screen and pay attention to the horizontal/vertical resolutions... Wala!  Perfect aspect ratio.

Which makes me think.  Maybe a neat feature (for resizing screens) would be a "keep apect ratio" option.

Hi Xport, great emu!

Is there anything in the options for the emu that will show the full pitch for soccer and badminton. They're fully playable but was just wondering if theres anything I can set to fix them.

If not, I'll gladly wait until the next release.

Thanks

I agree that the new version is DEFINITELY worth porting over...on top of everything that was already mentioned, they fixed up the sound problem for the FDS games! This latest version is becoming closer to the definitive emulator for NES/Famicom!

Great job on all your work, thanks!  smile.gif

Hey,

The emulator is awesome!  Thanks guys.  I read all the faqs, I apologize if I missed something.

Contra is not working on my xbox.  IGR is turned off on my bios and the same file works perfectly in windows using FCEUltra v. 081.  I'm using the emulator v16.  The fault is that the player and enemies show up normally, but the background is all black.  I'm using the xecuter BIOS 4983.

Is this some kind of bug?  Did my IGR settings not take effect?  Sorry if it's something stupid, I did try.

FCEUltraX v.16
xbox 1.4 with Aladdin

Evox dashboard

Contra is the only game to exhibit the problem; Double Dragon, Mario Bros, etc. work normally.

Cool.  I went in, played with all the video settings (don't think I actually changed any), deleted the saves, restarted and tried again, and it worked.  No idea what the glitch was, but if it happens again I'll know what to do.

is this a bug or something or is this the way it is with the filepath and all

that`s because the XBOX can`t allows some characters in the filenames (roms, videos,etc..).

. , + / " and others....

also, if you want to save roms (or whatever you want) in the XBOX HD, the rom filenames can`t be longer than 42 characters.

nevertheless, you can burn roms in a CD or a DVD with those characters, but you wont be able to save screenshots or save states.

if your roms doesn`t have this characters but they are longer than 42 characters, you can save states and screenshots as well, but if multiples roms have the same characters from the character number 1 to the character number 42, the XBOX will cut the folder filename due the 42 characters limit, that means a same screenshot for multiples roms.

Example...

if you have multiples roms like

Ike Ike! Nekketsu Hockey Bu - Subette Koronde Dai Rantou (J) [b1].nes
Ike Ike! Nekketsu Hockey Bu - Subette Koronde Dai Rantou (J) [b2].nes
Ike Ike! Nekketsu Hockey Bu - Subette Koronde Dai Rantou (J) [p1].nes
Ike Ike! Nekketsu Hockey Bu - Subette Koronde Dai Rantou (J) [t1].nes

this roms will have just one screenshot for all the 4 roms, this is because the XBOX will cut the folder filename due the 42 characters limit.

/Ike Ike! Nekketsu Hockey Bu - Subette Koro/

Xport can`t fix this, and nobody can..

the background music on FCE is way too loud. I play any game, then when I exit the theme from SMB2 is blaring out.

Could the sound level be reduced for future releases please?

you can moderate the background music volume pressing the right thumbstick (left and right)

you can also default the music to 'off.'

you can also use a sound editing program like 'cool edit' to reduce the volume yourself.

one of those things are far more likely to happen than xport messing with j-red's skin himself.

Hi,
Read a lot of good things about this emulator, so I downloaded v16 and put into my xbox. I simply unrar the package and copied every files to F:/apps/fceultra. However, when I tried to invoke it, it kept going back to my dashboard with no error displayed or whatever - nothing. I've tried tweaking path to the skin and saves in the .ini file but nothing changed. Any help appreciated.
My xbox profile:
- v1.4
- softmod - UDE
- bios - X2 4982 BFM
- dashboard - evox

So far, the only NES emulator that works on my xbox is XNES, but its features are very limited and I have to reboot my xbox just to change games!

Heya.  I was having trouble with my save states.  When I pushed the buttons, it said "state X saved" or loaded, but never actually loaded anything.

From searching, it looks like I need to manually create the filepath for the saves, and the problem is that the emu doesn't know where to write (I made my own file structure).

I am just writing to suggest that for the general faqs.  Seems like an easy pitfall to stumble upon and it isn't documented anywhere.  And if my solution is wrong (I haven't had a chance to do it yet), what should I do?

just like i said before, you can`t save states if your rom has characters like . , + " ,etc. This is because the Xbox keeps   the save states in the hard disk, and the XBOX file system can't allow roms with that characters that i have mentioned before. i bet that you have your roms in a DVD or a CD, don't you?

Another reason can be that save state folder has reached the files limit (over 4000 files by folder), so try erasing some files from that folder.

Just a quick question about high definition video modes.  I noticed that FCEUltraX does not save the high definition mode that is configured.  The general FAQ mentions that by saving the video mode it would make more problems for most people than solving problems for high definition users.  Ok, no problem... now I figured that XBoyAdvance wouldn't save high definition modes either but to my surprise, it actually did save it.  So I'm wondering if both are using the same GUI code, why does one save the mode and the other not?  Is it a bug that XBoyAdvance is saving the video mode?  Or is FCEUltraX a little behind with the generic GUI code?

No new *official* releases of FCE Ultra will be made. I mean it this time. :b

The forum has been closed, as I will not be available to moderate it any longer, but the old posts will be viewable indefinitely.

Crazy people may download http://fceultra.sour...pre.src.tar.bz2 which was intended to be 0.98.13. It should be stable, and fixed several major bugs present in 0.98.12, but I have neither the time nor desire to do thorough tests for regressions, and thus it will not be an official release.

http://fceultra.sourceforge.net/

So now is the best time to start from scratch with the latest official FCE Ultra source code, as there is no longer a need to worry about forking of the code base.  There have been many significant improvements in the official source tree, and it is one of the most popular XPort projects.  I realize you would probably have to start from scratch, but then again, once the new port was finished, all that would be needed from then on would be a rare bug fix release every now and then.  Oh, and doing a new port would also raise your karma biggrin.gif

EDIT: oops, I gave you the wrong palette!  sorry

I've found great documentation for a palette that works in FCEU that looks closer to the original than any other palette available.  This would be perfect to implement in your emulator that actually displays on a TV.

for NTSC: http://bmf.rustedmag...com/goodies.htm (final revision 2 seems more accurate, at least for super mario bros.)

for PAL: Matrixz's palette (can't find the url), also maybe this one.

Also, in FCEU, a pixel aspect ratio of 1.212 would be exactly like the original NES.

Thanks for the great emulator, and thank you for your time.

OK -- I just installed this emulator yesterday.  I want to use it in my xbox mame cabinet.  I am having a very odd issue with the emulator.  The green/A button works fine as expected to make menu selections when I have an xbox controller plugged in.  When I try to use my MAME cab, and here's the odd part -- the green/A button works fine to make selections on every menu EXCEPT choosing the game to play from the favorites menu!  This is really bizzare.  unplug the mame control, plug in the regular control, and I can selected, plug back in the mame cab control, and that button works in the games themselves.

Any clues?

As for feature requests -- I would love to see the ability to remap the controls for menu navigation.  My mame cabe only uses left thumb (stick) for up/down/left/right, the "auto scroll" feature of this emulator is a workaround, but isn't it kind of odd?  Why not make every flavor of "up" (i.e. both left and right sticks) do the same thing as up on the pad?  Its just for menu navigation in the emulator.  Then you can eliminate the auto scroll thing which is just plain annoying.

Just for fun, here's my cab:

I have two quick and simple questions.  :-)

1) I read that FCE supports ZIP files.  Is this any zipped file, such as .7Z or .rar?  Or is it only .zip files?  Also, can there be multiple roms in a zip file or will it only recognize single rom zips?

2) You mentioned to never change the .ini by hand.  Does this include paths and such?  Don't see how changing the paths could throw things off.  Also, I read that the .ini file is stored on E:.  Is this path adjustable or is it coded in the .xbe?

Thanks.

Is it possible to get more information on the ZIP file handling?

Many rom packages such as GoodNES, etc all package a ton of roms into compressed files. Each zip has various versions of the same ROM, varying language, versions, hacks, etc.

A great feature would be once you select the zip file, the emulator would give you an option to select an embedded ROM. Right now it autoselects one ROM, you dont have a choice.

Anyway, Xport will figure this out, the dude is a PIMP.

I finally figured it out.  I had to Force reload *.ini from the Configuration Menu.  You have to go to Configuration->General Settings->Force Reload D:\*.ini Settings, then Return to Launcher, then restart the emulator.  It IS in the fceultra_v16.txt but you really have to look and figure it out.

Phew, that problem was really bugging me.  I figured it out all by myself.

i've got 2 requests:

1.  add option to remove file extentions (this is already available in xboyadvance)

2. this is more of a request for all ports that support cheats...  would it be possible to add quick buttons below the on-screen keyboard when entering the descriptions for cheats?  using the controller takes forever.  it'd be nice to have buttons for comonly used words like infinite, lives, weapons, ammo, start, level, health, points......

or adding phrases like "start with" or "player 1" or "start on level" and simply finishing the cheat description with the keyboard.  its would really speed things up.

What's up gentleman,

I have a question and I hope I'm in the right place.  I have FCEultra on my xbox and when I'm playing the roms I like to listen to my own music.  After I select the song I want from the menu it keeps repeating.  What if anything can I do to make all the songs in my music file play continuously without constantly going into the menu and changing the song.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Alright so I have done more searching and I found this.

MP3/M3U Playback
================

Simply select the MP3 or M3U file from the game-selection screen.

The M3U file can also just be a regular file with one songfile per line.
For example:

d:\songs\song1.mp3
e:\moresongs\song2.mp3
smb:\mp3s\song3.mp3

If you are making a playlist of songs on your SMB share, then please note
the format:

smb:\mp3s\song3.mp3

The smb:\ tells FCEUltra to read from your SMB shared directory. Do not
put the SMB share definition in the filename.

----------SMB shared filenames are case sensitive!!!----

I'm not even going to pretend to understand this, but is this the answer to my earlier question?  I think I just need some spelling out....It takes me a while to get things but once I do I never forget them.  If someone could give me an example screen shot it might help me.   I'm new to all the tech stuff, but I am trying my best to catch up.  Any help is much appreciated.

Does anyone know how to set FCEUltra v16 to where it boots up in 480p and saves that as the default?  It sends a corrupt video if 480p, 720p and 1080i are enabled but when I enable 480p, 720p or 1080i it works like a charm in the FCEUltra menu but when I exit it and relaunch it, it defaults to 480i and the corrupt video.  I checked the .ini file but can't find anything for the life of me to change the default to 480p.

Also when I launch games using FCEUltra it just shows a black screen but I can hear the audio of the game just fine.  Can anyone help? Please this would be greatly appreciated.

in the original casing and everything. If this is possible and isnt too much work could you please do so?

Is there anyways to have FCE Ultra automatically load and play a rom upon startup?

I found this in the Readme file, but can someone help explain it to me a little better?

==================================================
Command-Line/Auto-Launching and Return to Launcher
==================================================
FCEUltra can be started with parameters to automatically launch a game
at startup.  Example code can be found in the custom_launch_params.cpp file.

All games tested with latest version of PCSXBox.

I'm going to be going into more detail than most. I just hated looking through the list and just seeing a couple of words here or there at the most. Assume all graphical fixes and CPU fixes are OFF if not mentioned. Assume BIOS mode unless otherwise mentioned. Percentage is my estimation of how close the emulation is to the real thing. Throttle button is always unmapped.

Arkanoid 2000 (J) - Intro music slightly skippy. Perfectly playable. 99% (Lazy screen updates, old frame skipping)

Castlevania Symphony Of The Night (U) - Konami intro's sound ever so slightly skippy. Perfectly playable. 99% (Frameskip, Framelimit)

Firepro Wrestling G (J) - Intro music rarely skippy, story mode sounds skip a little. Perfectly playable. 97% (Frameskip, Framelimit)

Guitar Freaks (J) - Intro stops and akips right when it reaches the title screen after the video itself is done playing. Music at selection screen slightly skippy. Seems to stay perfectly in sync on the songs I've tried. Unsure if disc change option works, I don't have the append disc. Perfectly playable with the right controller configuration. Disable CDDA needed, unless you enjoy having your ears blown out as soon as you start the game. Don't worry, the game doesn't actually USE CDDA to begin with. 95% (Frameskip, Framelimit, Disable CDDA)

Jumping Flash! (U) - This game is listed as not working, but it works with some.. er.. work. Music all the way through the game is really skippy from the intro to in-game, so you might as well turn it off and gain a bit of speed. With the default game setup, Jumping Flash! freezes the X-Box upon entering a level, right as it's about to draw the game world for the first time. This game requires use of the CPU interpreter which freezes the X-Box upon using the Exit Game menu item, at least it does here. Fully playable, but a slight bit on the slow or choppy side depending on what's happening onscreen. 75% (Old Frameskipping, Dark Forces, Disable XA Sound, Disable CDDA, Use CPU Interpreter)

Jumping Flash! 2 (U) - Everything about Jumping Flash! applies here.

Gunners Heaven (J) - Doesn't appear to be any music in the middle of playing, but I'm unsure if that's intended or not. Seems to otherwise run perfectly. 99% (Lazy screen updates, Old Frameskipping, Framelimit)

Rapid Reload (E) - European version of Gunners Heaven. Everything for it applies here

Sheep Raider (U) - Does not appear to work whatsoever, regardless of settings. 0%

Persona 2 Eternal Punishment (U) - Slightly skippy music in FMV intros. Perfectly playable.99% (Frameskip, Framelimit)

Persona/Revelations: Persona (U) - Perfectly playable. 100% (Frameskip, Framelimit)

Grand Theft Auto 2 (E) - Works perfectly except for the fact that the radio stations constantly play and there's no way to stop them, even on foot. Turning down the music volume in-game simply does not work. Perfectly playable, though I'd recommend some button remapping. 95% (Frameskip, Framelimit)

Harmful Park (J) - Goofy side-scrolling shooter in the Parodius vein. Works perfectly. 100% (Lazy screen updates, old frameskippnig, framelimit)

RPG Maker (U) - Works perfectly. 100% (Frameskip, Framelimit)

San Francisco Rush - Extreme Racing (U) - Developer intro is somewhat graphically messed up. Slight graphical anomalies that are barely noticed. Perfectly playable. 95% (Lazy screen updates, old frameskipping, Dark Forces fix, framelimit)

--

More to come a little later, including getting past the Wipeout 3 freeze when crossing the starting line at the beginning of a race.

But good finds, though.

Question regarding saved games. According to the documentation, I need to exit to the FCE menu before turning off the Xbox or my saved games won't actually save.  However, I have no idea how to do this.  I'm sure it's a simple fix, but I can't seem to find the answer... can someone help?

blink.gif  Ok...I cannot figure this out.  I have looked everywhere I can think of.  First, FCEUltraX is awesome.  I have it installed and it most everything works.  The one problem I have is that it only sees about half of my roms.  It shows from N-Z.  File Manager shows the roms are all there in the same directory, from A-Z, but the emulator only shows N-Z.

I have tried re-copying everything via FTP a few times to no avail.

Any ideas?  Thanks!

Dammit. I have FCEUltraX V16 installed on my XBOX V. 1.0 with Matrix Modchip flashed with Xecuter 2 (4981). Each time when I wanna enter a 8 digit Game Genie code, the system hangs and I have to restart the machine. The problem occures when I press the action button on EDIT Code option in the Cheats menu. It means that I'm not able to use ANY Game Genie code on my SO CALLED Emulator. I wonder why NO Improved versions are out since the long time ago when v.16 came out. Somebody please explain to me how should I fix my problem? I appreciate it.

So Long,

Upgrading to mednafen-nes is the best fix there is for your problem.

im a newbie, i made my account today, i just want to know how to burn
the fceultrax emulater to a disc, and do i need a mod chip

why would you want to burn fce to disk when mednafenx-nes is the new current emu to use? Fce is no longer updated by xport as i'm sure most people on here do not use it anymore.

use some google skills and find mednafenx-nes v8.  ph34r.gif
