Title: Is There Still Interest In Xbmc?
Post by: eH9116 on October 04, 2007, 11:35:00 AM
I only recently got into the new XBMC after I finally got the balls to solder down my matrix chip (I've never soldered before) and installed the new XBMC. Anyways, I created this poll to see if there is still any interest in development here, or if people have really started to move onto other projects or consoles.

As far as skins go, most can be downloaded from the SVN. It's an excellent system as you can get up-to-the-minute updates whenever you want them, and an SVN client only downloads those files that have changed since the last version.

For XBMC Scripts, we have, well... XBMCScripts.Com.

And there's also a site somewhere which has a ton of wide icons. MediaIcons or something like that, never payed it much attention myself...

Even if XBMC development were to stop today, it would be years before people stopped downloading it, perhaps decades before it fell out of use entirely. We're talking award winning software here!  laugh.gif

YES !!!!!!

I love this project and will follow it to the end.  I can't wait for the next release, and look forward to xbmc linux for HD.

I have 4 xbmc xbox's in my house all at 720p, and many friends and family have them too.

right now I'm using pm3mod skin

http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=615237

LOVE the modern home screen, slightly darker shades, and better amimations. .. I'd love for Jezz-x to incorperate alot of these mods into the standard pm3 skin . ..

XBMC is awesome, not sure what i'd do without it smile.gif

yes alot of my friends and relatives have gone otu got a xbox and it only for xbmc,
anyone that sees my xbmc with tis wide icons and good gui and they imediatly ask alot about it. only thing that has put a handful off is lack of HD play back thou it upscales quite well. is the lack of pvr option.

the linux port will help it evovle when it comes out

My thought would be that if I was new to the forum I'd wait a bit before posting a somewhat poorly worded and possibly offending poll.

Lots of people have very keen interest but aren't exactly set up to work and develop new content.

I know at least 20 people who need another option "Yes, I use XBMC everyday, without it life is incomplete"

There is a ton of regular users who dont vote on this pole (including myself) simply because this pole wasn't well thought out.

I think he means if there is still interest in new content/features for XBMC, also you can see someone else has edited his post, for all we know he softmodded his xbox...

Anyway people use XBMC every day and it's getting better by the second, people are still working on making it better and the community is working on skins, themes and so on, i would say people are still interested in XBMC, but everyone knows that tongue.gif

At first his post was asking whether it'd be worth setting up a website for skins and scripts and the like, and contained a link to his current site.

The first mod edit removed the link, the second mod edit removed the website idea completely.

There is no appropiate choise in this poll, XBMC is the central hub in my HT(PC) setup, i'm using it everyday, my main use is with lossless media and i have totally eliminated the need for any CD's or DVD's thanks to XBMC.

In short, XBMC will live as long as there are Xbox1's around.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/love.gif)  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pop.gif)

Get over yourselves.

Sorry to the people who weren't acting like spoiled little children, I just though I'd point out the pettiness in some of the replies I read.

Over the years it has went from the main living room media player into the bedroom due to HD content recently but still my old favorite.  I'll use it as long as the xbox lives, easily makes list of top 5 "free" software of all time.

OK look I have to say this is a stupid poll that will only go to the "yes" side why

1) Its in the XBMC section of the forum (Guess what 99% of people who come here probably use XBMC regularly)
2) People reading general non tech support posts are probably very interested in the community

If it wasn't for XBMC, I wouldn't even have a XBox at all! I'll keep on using it until the XBox dies and is not fixable. In the meantime, I'll keep updating it with new releases.

I'm still very interested in XBMC, I use it daily. I'll admit, since the 360 came out my interest has slacked off somewhat. Thats just because I've been having so much fun playing all the badass games. I've still been making builds here and there though. My 360 recently got the 3rlod so my interest has peaked even more now. I updated to the Oct 26 svn and am currently getting todays source updates. I love all the new options! The MC360 skin along with some of those sweet themes is the best. I love it! Really helping me get over my 360 withdrawals. The MC360 skin has really come a long way since I last used it. The fact that there is even a MC360 svn is just perfect. Rounds for everyone involved with XBMC and MC360! Hopefully one day soon we'll all be using XBMC on our 360's!

Oh yeah.. I dont like the choices in this poll so I didnt vote.

Mentioned it before somewhere around...

I would buy literally any hardware if XBMC runs on it!!!

After going through several (nightmare) mediacenter experiences from the good old Show Center 1000 up the latest Kiss 1600 and Rapsody N35, nothing compares with XBMC.

My biggest fear is, that once we got more HD content we still have no other hardware to run XBMC accordingly.

Give my a hardware which can do 1080p,  supports Analog and DVB-C AND is based on XBMC -  you'll get all my money *gg*

I'll stick as long as I can with XBMC, because it's the first MediaCenter I wasn't disappointed after the first 2 days. The only installation which comes close is MythTV, which I still use as PVR in the backend.

Once more thanks to all contributors!

This has been HANDS DOWN the best reason to MOD a xbox for years. I just hope they get a chance to run it on a 360 one day to take advantage of the much better hardware and HD.  hell I would love to see a port for PC, its much better than media center edition ever dreamed....DONT LET THIS APP DIE>>>>EVER!!!!!!

well I got to say I love XBMC and I hope soon there is a way to run it or something like it on my XBOX 360 because it can actually play HD content

the only and I mean only problem I have with the XBOX running XBMC is it is to slow for HD content mostly

I know this isnt the place for this but...

I dont even care if I can play games anymore on my 360 if it can do what this XBMC does for the XBOX 1 like play every format out there, I will be all over that again    the 360 is a cheep media center extender

I just LOVE the xbox.

I own 3 of them so I can watch my video's every where in the house. And one for the sound system in the house. This last one is running in party mode all the time.

And the last days I have been creating a mostly textbased web interface. So i can use it on my new Nokia n95

check it out on
My XBMC Web remote for symbiam or Pocket pc

Keep on the good work.

Thats my worry. Where would I go if my XBox died a death ? Sure I could find a second hand unit at a game store but i'd feel happier if I found a product that wsa more readily available like a small shuttle PC or something that is still in production. From what I understand though XBMC cannot be installed on  aPC so I would love to hear of alternatives.

Thanks I did.

http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/wiki/index....ux_port_project

And according to the link above it is still in development and is not only a long way before it is released but it also sounds like they are grabbing casual passers-by in order to get any headway on it.

Is tht article out of date, does anyone have know of it being completed and available to the end user ?

Cheers..........

There is an entire forum for this on the XBMC site with up to date progress logs.  Honestly given the initial response to the new dev request I had some doubts but it's looking pretty good right now.  From what I see, they are releasing builds (still early) but it looks like they are more finished than not at this point.

I used to use XBMC as my music player but when they ruined the playlist functionality for playing music I gave up on it (I'm not the only one).  The old functionality which toggled back and forth between your music and your playlist (with the black button) was perfect, they replaced it with a very limited poor UI for playlists and 'Now Playing'.

Just picked up a second one inc dvdkit for 60 bucks.
Have modded it myself, put in a digital coax output, xir for remote on/off and an old HD.
Best mediacenter ever. And fully controllable with my universal remote control (Sony RM-VL600).
The second one will be put in my parents livingroom on a 1080i resolution.

most definiatly, after spending the better part of the last year search for a good media center front end solution for my library of music and videos I came across XBMC. I started using it only a week ago and just recently found this froum and upgraded to the latest T3CH build. This system is by far the best available and easiest to use and modify.

It has given new life to my old XBOX and has me even considering setting up a second in the guest room so my friends and family who stay over can privately access my media library.

Dont give much creedance to those who whine and complain, at the end of the day you will never make everyone happy and despite some features that a minority may not like overall this is a great system.

XBMC is superb, definately my media centre of choice, and a lot of the reason why I still use my XBox (although various XBox games and emulators also consume a lot of my free time).

XBMC allows me to play DVDs, downloaded video files and view pictures. And it does so flawlessly and in an easy to use fashion, and I'll continue to use XBMC as long as I can.

Many, may thanks to everyone involved in it's production.

I'd been using 'home theatre' pc's for years from mythtv to myhtpc to btv to showshifter to meedio.

And in my opinion the PC theatre softeare packages are now becoming way to complicated, and only bought my first xbox about 1 year ago for the sole reason to install xbmc and see how it was. I have revisited the PC HT front end several times, but always sitting there ready to go ( and use for everything) is my xbox with t3ch xbmc build running perfectly every time I press the button.

I now have 2, 1 downstairs (modchip) on projector/surround, and another upstairs (softmod) on TV & stereo.
(Just added the xbox upstairs that had myhtpc sw on it with tv tuner remote, but sometimes goes wonky when the pc comes out of standby), now xbox is instant on. and the kids can use my old laptop on the bench for playing pc games, instead of mixing the tvpc with media & pc style games.

Oh and the XBMC win32 port does actually work quite well (albiet a tad slow), and is OK for testing out your skinning skilz. :-)

May XBMC last for my lifetime...

Uh, recently soft modded my Xbox after reading a crap load of tutorials (I used the Splinter Cell game save exploit)...now I've been running XBMC for a couple weeks (currently running 2-10-2008 build), I love it, I got sick and tired of watching/listening all the videos/music I have on my PC, I hated sitting in this chair and then dealing with them tiny speakers...now I can watch/listen them all on my tv along with my stereo system, man how I missed the bass... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I also have all my emulators and ROMS on here, also upgraded the HDD no more having to run games from the disc, yay!  I can't express in words how much I enjoy XBMC...I'm a huge nerd so I was pretty excited to say the least when I was done soft modding my Xbox and installing XBMC...

THANK YOU TEAM XBMC!!!  MUCH LOVE!!!

I'd say there's a ridiculous amount of interest on xbmc..

I've been selling them on ebay and well lets just say business is so good i've had to stop for a week just to catch up on orders..and i've cleared out all my local stores for Xbox remotes. Alot of people seem to be buying more than one and many are buying their second or third.

I never expected there to be so much interest. I wish i did it years ago.

it's an all in one entertainment system. nothing out there can compare. not the 360, not the PS3, nothing!

now, what would be really nice if we could hack out the 360 like we have with the xBox. all the same capabilities, just more juice under the hood. now, that would be awesome!

Keep up the XBMC development, it's simply the best software there is for media center.

I use it every day. Its way better than the 360 for sharing media.

+Infinity

using it right now, playing music, which I'm basically always listening to XD.

XBox Media Center is the best!

My mate is always using it for listening to music. It's a fantastic stand alone device.

YES! The only reason I own a xbox is for XBMC! I don't even have one single game for it! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Been using it for years and will continue to do so. Also can't wait for the t3ch releases - they make my month!

yup daily, I have my X3 v1.0 Halo Edition Xbox with X3LCD (250GB) inside my car with XBMC and xbox classic with coverflow on. So as soon I turn it on it goes straight to music! I also have videos and stuff but only when friends are in the car!

DVD Player + Xbox in the car = best thing for music/media

I just installed it this weekend.  It's fantastic.  My wife, who was skeptical and rolled her eyes every time I said I was going to fix an old xbox and make it out media center, is totally "sold" to use her word.

I'm still exploring features and learning the ins & outs, but we love it.  Best $15 I ever spent (for Splinter Cell to do the softmod).

A couple of questions if NE1 wants to answer:

Some people in this thread said they canceled cableTV or DirecTV now that they have XBMC... why?  Are you able to get full network TV streams via XBMC?

@ 6stringkng: What's "XD"?

I have been using XBMC for years, I LOVE IT.  I runing it as my dashboard.  Its the main reason to mod a xbox.  It even supports mkv files!!! To bad the xbox doesnt have enough horsepower to push them sad.gif

Long live XBMC  smile.gif

What do you mean by "push" mkv files?  I play mkv files on my xbox all the time, does 'push' mean something else?

I should have said HD quality matroska files.  Something in the 1080/720 flavor.
