Title: Trouble Installing 120gb Maxtor Hdd
Post by: Badger6 on March 21, 2004, 06:35:00 PM
hey ive had a maxtor 120gb hdd for quite some time now (since christmas) and ive been having trouble installing it (ive made practically NO progress).  its a brand new hdd and ive put it in and put in my slayers evox disc (cd-rw and thomson dvd drive) but i keep getting error 09.  i know i burned the disc properly and that my dvd drive can read it because it works about 1 out of 5 times with normal hdd.  ive tried with new hdd's jumper on master, cable select, and slave many times, but it just doesnt wanna read the disc.  i didnt do anything to the hdd b4 putting it in xbox and trying to use slayers evox.  does anybody know why it wont work and what does error 09 mean?

heres some other info:
v1.0 xbox
thomson dvd drive
trying to install 120gb maxtor, not sure about the product number
i believe that im trying to use slayer's evox 2.5 and its on  a memorex cd-rw
i usually use an xecutor2 bios that is red and orange
xbit chip with pogopin install
thats all i can think of

also, something i tried was booting slayers evox off of disc with normal hdd, then once its in slayers evox, i unplug normal hdd and put in new hdd and then i try formatting with slayers evox.  it spends about 8 seconds saying its formatting z: then it says its done.  is it working?  i then tried using slayers evox to install ms dash, evox, and all the apps and stuff and it instantly said it was done.  i dont think this works at all lol.  can someone please confirm that it will not work to simply boot slayers evox off the cd with normal hdd in, then swap the hdd's while xbox is turned on?

also, my normal hdd has the jumper on cable select.  does this mean my  new hdd will have to use cable select also or is there still a possibility that it needs to be on master?

i would greatly appreciate some help  smile.gif

btw if u need to know anything i didnt post, just ask and i'll do my best to inform you better  wink.gif

edit: after trying slayers evox with new hdd like 25 times using evox d6 bios and jumper on master, i kept getting error 09, then on one of them it paused for a while before giving me the error, then i got error 07.  neone kno wut that means?

Error Codes:
CODE

07 = HDD timeout
09 = HDD parameters (PIO/DMA/or size {debug}, certain size minimum is required for debug)

Try not using slayers, I personally hate it because it always Fu*** up my hard drive. Try creating an evox hd disc, or just a regular one and do ftp raw commands. Check in the tutorials section under evolution-x at
http://www.xbox-scene.com  also if you should try a different media, maybe your dvd drive just does not like the media any more. And try putting the hard drive in your computer and reformating it, the space might be used up.

Hope that helps,

I would take a strong guess you are running any early X2 bios like 4976 or 77

if so you ain't got no chance of getting it boot from slayer evox disc on a totally blank unpartioned new h/d

these early bios had the advantage it will boot without dvd but if there was a h/d problem it would just sit there

the D6 bios would boot everytime from a evox in dvd tray on a totally blank h/d, but would fail to boot if dvd was unplugged/removed

using your present working setup & old h/d

use slayer 2.5 to boot hopefully and flash your mod through the slayer disc / evox

think you best use M7 - just a normal M7 will do
(slayer has M7 ef which will do just fine for h/d install)

then after it reflashed the bios to M7 I bet if you set 120gb jumper to cable select and plugged that in - still with the slayer disc in ya dvd it will boot slayers evox installer

then my personal choice is rebuild retail - think option 4
then go to format options and format up F to 112gb
(I use retail option coz if owt goes tits up then I can just rebuild retail and hopefully not lose 112gb of ergh hum data on my F drive)

reckon this X2 bios is where ya problem is

of course after you done the h/d install you can go back to an early X2 4976/7 if ya want

I prefer atm M7 non eject fix over all X2 bios's including X2 4981

best of luck

thnx for the help guys

pyro, theres no way im making a normal evox disc, b4 i modded box i tried this like 10 times but i have no cd burning experience and i just couldnt figure it out (yes i did make an ISO first, im not that dumb  wink.gif )  its a miracle i burned my slayers disc rite.

xgeek, i used the normal xbox ide cable and im positive its been plugged in properly, and the hdd did vibrate, although i dont believe the ide cable has to be plugged in ifor it to get power.  and i DID have the jumper on cable select although i also tried master and slave.

pizza pizz, thank u for the detailed post, i'll try the M7 bios

well i DLed the M7 bios and when i unrared it, i got two bioses : EvoxM7.bin and EvoxM7_ef.bin.  i used the xbit flashing software to reflash the chip with the EvoxM7.bin bios and i also verifyed it to make sure it was written correctly.  i tried bootin xbox like 10 times with new hdd and slayers evox with jumper on master, then on cable select and each time it gave me error 09.  it didnt even pause after the animation as if it were trying to read the cd-rw  sad.gif .  i then did the same with the EvoxM7_ef.bin and got the same results.  ne other ideas?

thnx for helping

if you have a thomson drive then a dvd-r evox is best option
cd-rw is fine on certain brands but not many brands will work 101%

some philips won't read cd-r's either

best way is to burn using rec now max - slowly say at 4x on cd-rw I found

or what you could try is plug in a dvd-rom drive from pc
plug the dvd ide lead into the pc dvd drive and use a power splitter from h/d to fire the pc dvd up with ya xbox

boot the xbox up via on/off button with the slayer disc already inside, cd-rw or a cdr should work on the pc drive

it may work

if not try leaving the yellow lead in the old xbox dvd drive and with an original xbox game in there so the xbox knows a game is inserted

hopefully - it should boot the evox/slayer disc in the pc dvd-rom

uhm it should be a pc dvd drive as I have found a number of pc cd-rom drives don't work at all - so just borrow a dvd drive from ya pc and try it out
It should boot as the hacked bios will run the default.xbe

if not and you had all the files it should of been compiled as a udf 128 8+3 format and of course closed disc

well i think you should get familiar with burning things, it will help u out in life. On the ide cable if you really think thats the problem pop a new one in, grab it from radio shack. It doesent sound like the problem though. Id suggest a differetn cdrw the expensive ones tend to work the best is what i have found out. if you need any help email me and i can help you burn stuff. The bets program that works for me is Nero. I think its the best burning program there is. Hope that helps, pyro88

i do not think the ide cable is the problem and i know i burned the cd-rw with slayers evox correctly because even tho its only 1out of 5 times, my thomson drive WILL read the disc with the normal hdd in.  i have a friend that sent me his evox cd in the mail and when it arrives i'll try that and if that doesnt work then i dont know what to do because i dont have a dvd burner.  thanks for helping tho

btw i use memorex cd-rws and i hear that those r good

edit: pyro88, u mentioned using raw commands through fxp to format hdd, do u know where i can find out how to do this?  ive done some searching in xbox-scene, but i havent found anything mentioning it.  ive been searching tutorials, but there are way too many tutorials to just read through each one in search of the ftp commands.  do you have anymore info about this?

well, i got my friends slayers evox cd that he used for installing a bigger hdd, and everything i have is the same as him, we both have xbox v1.0, xbox thomson dvd drives, and we both got maxtor 120 gig drives, but it worked for him and doesnt seem to like me.  sad.gif   today i just happened to be at radio shack so i bought a powersplitter thing and plugged my comps cd-r/rw drive (not a dvd-rom) and i followed the tutorials but i had no luck reading the cd.  im just wondering, will it work to use a cd-r/rw drive from a comp?, cuz the tutorials say to use a dvd-rom but they dont mention cd-r/rws.

well, is there anything else i can try?  could there be the possibility that i messed up my hdd or maybe it just wont work?

Is the Drive Lockable?
Title: Trouble Installing 120gb Maxtor Hdd
Post by: Badger6 on April 06, 2004, 03:38:00 PM
ive looked on some charts and i believe its lockable, although i dont completely understand what it means to lock or unlock a hdd and i dont understand what u would lock or unlock a hdd for either.  im not sure but i think the product # is 6Y120L0 and that number is lockable on the lockability lists ive looked on.  that # i just said is the first few digits of a longer number with a bar code under it.

so yes i am pretty sure the new hdd is lockable

you need to use a dvd-rom drive not a cd-rom drive to obtain less hassle free results.....

I know some peeps have got cd-rom's to work but I tried n tried a few drives - really wanted a black LG CD-ROM drive to work so I could just use 1 xbox with a busted drive as a vcd/svcd/divx player

but could not get the LG cd-rom to read jack $hit

trust me - beg / steal or borrow a dvd-rom for 5 mins

wired up the same as you did with cd-rom

IT WILL WORK

DVD-ROM MUST BE SET AS SLAVE ON JUMPER SETTINGS

MAXTOR 120GB - PLUG IN JUMPER J48 = CABLE SELECT
NO OTHER JUMPER SHOULD BE ON THE MAXTOR DRIVE

the maxtor 6Y120L0 will work sweet - got 1 in mine 2mb cache, 7,200 rpm
(also got a 6Y120P0 is the 8mb cache version)

plug in the ide lead, power it up via the splitter on the h/d

put in slayer disc & reboot
(or as long as disc is in pc dvd drive when you power up using the on/off button)

my dads getting a new laptop soon and he wants one that plays dvd's, so do u think i would be able to figure out how to get the dvd drive out of that?  do laptop dvd drives have normal IDE hookup?

well im gonna be visiting my cousins in san diego so im gonna be gone for a week, but thnx for helping me as much as u have!

ok, first, my dad said theres no way im using his laptop's dvd drive, so im not sure where to get one, cuz i dont wanna buy one since im not 110% sure it will work.  second, im positive i properly burned my evox cd because my xbox reads it 1 out of 5 times with the normal hard drive, so i dont think it has to do with reading the disc.  well im gonna be gone for a while starting tomorrow so dont expect me to reply.

thnx for the help

If the evox/slayer disc works in ya m8's xbox then use ya m8's xbox to prepare your 120gb

just set the jumper to cable select

that would be the easiest solution that go through burning a xbox disc with udf 128 8+3 in rec now max on a media that your drive would like

ok ill talk to my friend about trying that.  if that doesnt work do u think the problem could be that i somehow messed up my hdd or maybe it just wont work?
