Frosty's XBOX Rescue Disc v1.0 and Dual-Boot VGA Softmod v1.0
Posted by XanTium | May 18 19:36 EST | News Category: Xbox

FrostyTheSnowman released 2 useful discs for the Xbox1.

* Frosty's XBOX Rescue Disc v1.0:
Quote

NOTE: This Rescue Disc REQUIRES that your XBOX is either Softmodded, Modchipped, or TSOP flashed. This disc WILL NOT WORK with an unmodified retail XBOX.
NOTE2: For softmods, you NEED to have a hard drive that is locked and has a functional 'C' drive to work.

Features:
- Supports all current Softmods, Modchips, and TSOP Flashes
- Entirely DVD based!
- Full support for ALL XBOX versions! (v1.0-v1.6b)
- Full, unrestricted FTP access to the XBOX hard drive partitions! (C,E,F,G,X,Y & Z)
- Allows full access to the REAL C drive on Softmods! (overrides ShadowC drives)
- Supports F & G Drives
- Supports Custom Partitions
- Includes DVD2XBOX and XBpartitioner(info) (both are entirely DVD based)
- Allows LOCKING and UNLOCKING of XBOX Hard Drives! (This disc will only lock and unlock hard drives with the same key as the EEPROM on the motherboard.)
- Changes 'Ring of Light' to RED to confirm the Rescue Disc is running

* Frosty's Dual-Boot VGA Softmod v1.0
Quote

NOTE: This softmod is intended ONLY for v1.0-v1.5 NTSC XBOX consoles! If you have a PAL XBOX console, you will need to use a NTSC/PAL switching utility to change your PAL XBOX to an NTSC version before you can use this softmod. (Enigmah PAL-NTSC Switcher can do this)
NOTE2: This is a softmod, not a BIOS. This softmod requires a RETAIL XBOX BIOS to run, it will NOT run with any hacked BIOSes or Modchips.

Known Bugs
- Not compatible with PAL XBOX consoles (VGA cannot be used on PAL consoles)
- Not compatible with v1.6/Xcalibur XBOX consoles
- Not compatible with 3944 BIOS consoles (Must be running Microsoft 4034 or higher)
- Not compatible with Modchips (Unless the chip is flashed with a retail BIOS)

Features

- 100% FULL VGA SUPPORT! ALL GAMES/APPLICATIONS ARE 100% COMPATIBLE!
- Force480p (VGA mode only, forces 480i games to run at 480p)
- ForceGPUReset (VGA mode only, fixes all 'green screen' games)
- Supports Conexant Encoders
- Supports Focus Encoders
- F & G Drive Support (LBA48)
- Custom Partition Support (Supports up to 750GB HDDs w/XBpartitioner)
- IGR Support (In-Game-Reset, done by L+R+BACK+BLACK or L+R+BACK+START)
- ShadowC Drive (Protects softmod from being damaged)
- VirtualCDROM (Allows mounting of ISOs with DriveImage Utilities(info))

I have a softmodded XBOX using the AID 3.
Are there any advantages to using this mod and can this mod be installed over or additionally to my current config?

Thanks a heap Frosty!
I'm wondering will there be support for 1.6 xboxes in the future revisions of your softmod? If not, is this an issue that will probably not be able to be fixed? If so I'll just find myself a an earlier version xbox.
Thanks again! My friends and I now have uses for all those CRT monitors sitting around!

Honestly, I would run my softmod over AID anyday, but that is just my personal opinion.

If you decide you want to try it out, boot up your XBOX with my Rescue Disc, and then wipe your C and E drives entirely, and then transfer over the files in the 'C' and 'E' folders in my softmod to your C and E drives on your XBOX.

NOTE: You can leave your F drive alone, it will still work fine with my mod. But, be sure to back up your TDATA and UDATA folders on your E drive first so you don't lose your saves.  wink.gif

At the moment, there is no support for v1.6 XBOXes, and I don't see it being possible in the future unfortunately...

Use a v1.0-v1.5 XBOX with my VGA softmod though, and you will be set.  happy.gif

Both my Rescue Disc and my VGA Softmod are available in the 'usual places'. (a.k.a XBINS) Just hop on to google and search for 'xbins tutorial' and it will help you get where you need to go.

Once you are on the XBINS FTP server (through the above method) you can find my Rescue Disc and my VGA Softmod here:

Rescue Disc - /XBOX/Console Based Applications/apps/utilities/Frostys XBOX Rescue Disc/

VGA Softmod - /XBOX/Console Based Applications/exploits/_Packages/Frostys Dual-Boot VGA Softmod/

hey again Frosty, i have tried your dual boot vga softmod and it worked but I'm running into a problem, the problem is that i can't get to the ms dashboard anymore, it just freezes when i try it, and i could not completely copy over the shadowc.img to the c drive, I'm testing this mod on the original hd in the box witch is only 8gb so I'm wondering because the drive is so small, i think that theres no more room on the c drive to put that file in there and thus is causing my problem, does that sound right, or I'm i missing something?

I've actually seen this issue before, a friend of mine pointed it out to me. It seems to be related to how the mod is originally installed. (Example: using Splinter Cell instead of Mech Assault, etc.), the fix is to boot with my Rescue Disc, FTP into your XBOX, and TOTALLY wipe everything off your C and E drives (although you might want to back up your TDATA and UDATA directories first), and then re-transfer my VGA Softmod over to the C and E drives again.

Using my Rescue Disc is the safest way to install my VGA Softmod.  (Although Splinter Cell/Mech Assault/AUF usually work fine too.) happy.gif

NOTE: The 'shadowc.img' file actually contains the Microsoft Dashboard, which is why it isn't working at the moment. happy.gif

ah ic so i should have done the following

1. softmod the box in general so i can use your rescue disk
2. use your rescue disk
3. recopy your vga mod back into the xbox
4. kick back with a slurpe and enjoy

ah so due to the fact that only about half of the file was copyed over the ms dashboard can't load and thus i get the freeze. I see i will try it again but i'm going to wait until i get the bigger hd that i want before continuing. thanks Frosty!

Yes, unfortunately it is kind of a drawn-out process. However, most people that are using my VGA Softmod are usually switching from NDURE or another softmod anyway, so it's not usually such a process.  happy.gif

But, you CAN use my VGA Softmod with XboxHDM if you like. (in conjunction with your 'eeprom.bin' file) So when you upgrade your HDD, you can simply use XboxHDM to prepare your hard drive with my VGA Softmod.  pop.gif

Just backup the directory for your current dashboard (UnleashX, Avalaunch, etc.), and delete the files in '/E/Dashboard' in my softmod and replace them with the ones from your old dashboard backup.

And your set!  happy.gif

hi and hello smile.gif

i've installed ur application and run into some minor problems, my Dash is wayyyyyyy to dark, and games seems ok so far(the ones i've tested) but have the green screen problem, they are mostly PAL games, could this be the problem? the only NTSC game i tested so far is called "Black" and it also has the Green Screen problem.

for my setup: i have a PAL Box v.1.1 switched to NTSC, with ur Softmod running at 720p, i've tryed 480p also and my Dash seems ok, but also have the Green Screen Problem(games also, the same i tryed on 720p), 1080p is a no go.

hope for help.

Thanks in Advance
sucht

(edit: sorry for my bad englisch, and i hope u can understand the stuff i wrote up there)
(edit2: i forgot to mention i've used the 680k-Ohm resistor, and the only other one i have here is a 340k-Ohm resistor)

It sounds like you didn't install my softmod properly.

To install my softmod, boot your XBOX using my Rescue Disc, and wipe your 'C' and 'E' drives completely, and then copy the files from the 'C' folder in my softmod to the 'C' folder on your XBOX, and do the same for the 'E' folder too.

Now boot up your XBOX using the eject button and it should work properly.

NOTE: If you had a softmod before you installed my softmod and you used Enigmah's PAL/NTSC switcher to make your system an NTSC system, then it did not work. Enigmah's PAL/NTSC switcher is not compatible with softmods.

Sounds like the softmod is installed properly now, but your VGA cable might not be in the right mode.

What diagram did you use to build your VGA cable?

I think your XBOX is still in PAL mode. Until you switch your machine over to NTSC in the 'real' eeprom, (softmods don't use the real eeprom, which is why Enigmah's doesn't work with them) you won't be able to use my softmod.

However, I do have another option for you if you like... you could beta test my new Rescue Disc, v1.1, which has the ability to switch NTSC/PAL with both softmods and modchips.

Let me know if you are interested in trying it.

EDIT: Oh wait, you just said that your DVD drive doesn't work... you won't be able to use my Rescue Disc without a working DVD drive... do you have a spare PC DVD-ROM drive laying around that you could use? (if you leave the yellow plug connected to your faulty DVD drive, you can connect the IDE cable to a PC DVD-ROM drive and use that instead for burned games/applications discs.)

i have it up and running thanks to You smile.gif

this Enigmah was the problem sad.gif

but now its ok so far a bit to bright but its better than before smile.gif

the funny thing is if i start up my box with eject then i have no green screen at all, but a bit to bright picture, and when i use the power button to start up my box then i have the green screen problem but the picture is ok, not to bright and not to dark.

i truly thank You for pointing me in the right direction smile.gif

thanks

ps: sorry for my bad englisch

(edit: i would if i could but i have no spare drive sad.gif  but thanks for asking me to betatest, i think it will work just great)

Awesome, i'm glad you got it working!

But yeah, as far as the eject/power options, the eject button starts the XBOX in VGA mode, and the power button starts the XBOX in normal NTSC (Normal TV/HDTV) mode.

Also, the brightness issue is an incompatibility with your monitor. I recommend trying another monitor and see if it works better. (In my experience, LCDs work a lot better than CRTs do with the XBOX in VGA mode.)

Do you have a PAL XBOX?

Your XBOX will need to be in NTSC mode for my VGA softmod to work.

Also, does that adapter convert component to VGA already, without software? If so, then you might not even need to use my VGA softmod, all you might have to do is make sure your XBOX is in NTSC mode.

You shouldn't see anything on the disc if it is in your PC, because it has the XBOX DVD filesystem, which PCs cannot read.

Have you tried booting it in your XBOX?

Hello Frosty,

I too am from different country, and i hope you can help as i am having difficult with this VGA mod of yours truly.

First off many taps on the back for your efforts, this thing u have done is AMAZING, im saying this because i bought 2 of those X2VGA things, and this virtually would have saved me lots of money, money i allready spent, so my great gratitude for your efforts indeed.

OK, here's the story:
-I had the xbox set up with your pbl metoo loader, and seeing all this green screen stuff and 100 percent figures give my attention to this totally to try for myself.
-I ran in2 same problems as SUCHT, this user didnt get it work because of wrong switch with enigma.

This is what i did:
-boot with SC and proceed to softmod menu(krayzie1.1), this give me access to the files on HD virgin-style.
-Then i put the softmod pack up there with ftp(could i copy those 2 the disc you made and copy them from there to hd for faster workings?),the C on C and E folder on E drive( i wiped it all)
-so far so good, so i turn of as per the sayings from your nfo, but wether i boot with eject or pwer button i always get the error screen for service the microsoft support.
-after build from scratch in xboxhdm i try again, this time after complete softmod, i boot your rescue disc, i ftp enigmah app and run it , and it says the xbox is ntsc mode.
-Now i return to your disc, and from there i wipe everything using dvd2xbox explorer.
-I ftp the softmod to c and e, and i turn off xbox, and still i get service error (12 or 13 i think).
-Now i again unlock my hd in the PC with xboxhdm i made, and make from srcatch again the xbox hd.
-This time i just boot into the MSdasboard and in settings i can see the highdef enabled  (all the modes).
-So again i think my pal xbox is certainly the NTSC machine now?
- i used a component cable with vga2rca plugs for least hassle-free workings.

I dont know what else to do, i have been softmodding for long time, i have 4 xboxes and 3 of them is focus/conexant, i want to really have LAN-party on the vga monitors(1 my room,1 down and 1other room) with your amazing VGA softmod.

The files on C are just xboxdash.exe and the fonts folder, i am feeling i am missing some stuff there, can the xbox boot just from these files? Is there meant to be a pointer to the e:dasboard?

Do i start some xbe on there after i have ftp the files using your rescue disc?

My understanding is this:
-just get the files there on the hd real C and E and for pal user convert pal>ntsc and just reboot and it should work right?

I have 1.1 xbox converted to NTSC with Enigmah videomode switcher, when i check with your disc in evox info it shows also the north american system too....

kernel is 5101
dash is 5960
the above is not offending for the softmod not to work right?

Please Frosty, or anyone else as learned, advise me as to what i must do for to make these things work, so my life can be ended in this torment i am having, not being able to work it...

Many thanks in advance, hope no1 fell asleep sleeping.gif  reading this, as i was loudly crying laugh.gif  while typeing this up, my keyboard was like the famous Falls from the Niagara, the keys is sqeecky clean biggrin.gif

Hi all

I'm just having the same problem. I have a v1.4 xbox, in NTSC mode and HD enabled, with a frozen cable from divineo, and I installed the dual-boot vga softmod because I was having some problems with the colours. I did it by using xboxhdm, not by ftp (should be the same... shouldn't it??), and it just starts with an error 13 or 14. I copied back the old softmod and everything is ok again, but with wrong colors, of course... Any idea? Maybe some missing file?

TIA

Hi, So I was able to install the VGA softmod, got it working and everything. However when I boot Unleashx (not my primary dash, just something I keep for various uses) I get the 'green screen'. another problem is when I try to boot the Linux distro "XDSL" i am unable to, my led just flashes orange and then shuts the machine down.
I'm using a v1.0, kernel 4034, and XBMC.  Also I use a samsung 19" LCD monitor and Frozen cable from divineo.

Thanks
Zeb

Hey Frosty,

Just wanted to say a big thank you for your rescue disk. I have a soft-modded (ndure) xbox and had upgraded my version of XBMC. I edited the dashboard shortcut but I pointed it at the wrong file which put my xbox in eternal booting loop, never getting past the green xbox logo before restarting.

I thought I was in for hours of pain. I was going to have to take out the hard drive and hook it up to a usb enclosure and find all my old xbox hdm tools and track down the eeprom key and hope I could get into it to fix it....but after quickly coming across your disk, I had it burnt and in the xbox. Honestly I didn't have much hope that it was going to work, but when I saw that ring go red and then you startup screen come on I was pretty f%$#&^ happy. After a quick ftp and edit of the dash.cfg to point in the right place all was sweet and my xbox was working again.

So, thank you again for this awesome tool which saved me potentially hours of stuffing around. Love your work!!

Cheers

A double post, I know, but I found this thread after my fist post and wanted to spread the love wink.gif

I just wanted to throw some thanks Frosty's way for making a disc that rescued me from an otherwise borked Xbox.

I was in the middle of upgrading my XBMC installation, by FTP'ing over the new files (I was in Evolution so I wasn't running XBMC) when my FTP client (Filezilla) blew up and the transfer failed, whilst transferring the main .xbe file!! Argh, as I have XBMC as my default dashboard, this was NOT good news - rebooting would lead to the Green Logo followed by a blank screen.

After pishing around for an age trying to mount the Xbox hard drive in Linux (no go for me) I came across a post mentioning Frosty's Rescue DVD, I burnt it and BAM, it works.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU, I was able to re-FTP my files over and it now all works like a treat again.

So, props to you for making a truly awesome tool and to those who dissed it, you clearly know nothing, since it rescued my Xbox from death.

Good day,

I am new to this forum, but i am kind of desperatly looking for help here.

I am in the possesion of a modded xbox ( duoX2 chip) with working bioses.
So when i power up the xbox i do get a blue X logo, with underneath it saying Xecuter2

Then when i try to boot with the rescue disk, the led lights turn red as they are supposed to do.
But then the xbox simply reboots. in a continuous loop.

i do have 1 additional point here: I do have a new fresh 120 gb harddrive in this xbox with NOTHING on it yet. The reason i tried this resque disk is because none of the autoinstallers has worked for me so far.

I have burned all of these on CD-RW DVD-R and DVD+R. My philips dvd drive does make some sounds, but then simply reboots again for god knows what reason.

IF there is anyone that can help, please do, because i have litteraly tried 8 brands of DVD, all burned in different modes, i even hooked up another DVD drive to my xbox, and im just getting desperate...

Tnx in advance

If I have an effed up hard drive from another xbox, and a working modchipped xbox that has an Aladdin modchip with xecuter2 installed can I use this disc to change/fix the files on the busted hard drive? The busted hard drive is also locked, and I don't have the HDD Key for it. Is this possible or am I way off?

Thanks

No. You need the eeprom from the old Xbox to unlock the disk. You might be able to use atapwd and one of the master passwords to unlock the disk - see this post for details.

But I can't even read the HDD or put in master passwords, I'm pretty sure my computer can't I think I've tried it before, and when I try the locked HDD in the modchipped xbox the Frosty disc won't load up, it just goes right into the error code 6... Grr.

Use xboxhdm 1.9 or xboxhdm 2.1 to get access to the disk. Then try unlocking it with atapwd or mhdd and one of the master passwords.

Yes, you will get error 6 with a disk locked to another motherboard.......

Use Kingroach's Ndure 3.1 for VGA support instead. Select RGB in the menu.

Change the network settings to Static. Configure your PC's IP address to the same subnet: 192.168.0.2.

What does that exactly mean : "Configure your PC's IP address to the same subnet".Please give some more detailed info.

Frosty's Rescue Disc cold boots fine but for the life of me i can't change the ip it appears on T.V. : 0.0.0.0;

I looked everywere on the forums and i don't understand why the changhes i make in in the "settings" submenu on Frosty's disc won't remain saved (they change as they were once i leave the settings/info scrreen).

Do they have anything to do with me trying to ftp.

What does it take for me to ftp using Frosty's disc namely changeing the ip from that dreaded 0.0.0.0.

The temperatures appear on screen so i don't have a v 1.6 Xbox.

Please help me, i'm starting to lose any hope here...

The settings aren't saved because you are running from DVD, which is read-only, so Evox can't write to the settings file. It has nothing to do with trying to run FTP.

Same subnet: the first 3 numbers in the IP address should be the same, only the last number should be different e.g. if your PC is 192.168.1.65 then your Xbox should be set to 192.168.1.x, where X is any number between 2 and 253 apart from 65.

Temperatures will appear on the screen with a 1.6 Xbox, so your deduction about not having a 1.6 Xbox is incorrect. Having said that, it makes absolutely no difference - Frosty's Rescue disc works on all Xbox versions.

The problem might be the cable you are using to connect to the Xbox, or possibly the network port on the Xbox might be broken. When you plug the cable in, is the green LED above the network port lighting up? If not then check the connection at both ends of the cable, or try a different cable. If you are connecting your Xbox directly to your PC then you might need a crossover cable.

Once you are seeing the green LED then you have two options to make your system work as you want it to:

1. Connect your Xbox and PC to a network with a DHCP server. With a broadband network connection you just plug the Xbox and PC into your broadband router.

2. Unpack the Frosty's Rescue disc iso with Qwix on your PC. Edit evox.ini to give it a fixed IP address (change it from StaticIP = No to StaticIP = x.x.x.x where x.x.x.x is the IP address you want), then remake the iso with Qwix, and burn that to DVD-R.

After a long night sleep the first thing i did was to slap my forehead hard, thinking : "Boy you're stupid."The settings aren't saved because you are running from DVD, which is read-only, so Evox can't write to the settings file.""

Then, and i assure you this IS the truth, i thought about unpacking Frosty's disk, as i did this with countless iso games (xiso more precisely), and trying to change the evox.ini "to give it a fixed IP address".
Now, "x.x.x.x is the IP you want" means my xbox IP right, wich i know, fortunately;THAT IP right?(i sound like a 5 year old stupid kid, i know unsure.gif   )

I have FTP ed games to my hdd before so there are no pbs with the crossover cable or the network port on the Xbox as the green LED is lighting up, and i just checked the connection-it works.

I have mapped a network place on my computer to my Xbox so there is a direct link through the crossover cable 'tween my Xbox and my comp (with win xp professional as OS).

Thank you so much for your time.

And Victory!!!Now i can change the dash and experiment my sanity to hell...
