Title: Xbpartioner
Post by: Osirls on January 14, 2007, 07:13:00 PM
Hey guys,

I stupidly started playing with XBPartitioner thinking I could give my F:\ partition some free space from my E:\ Partition but this has caused both partitions to appear blank now!

Thinking about it now, I realise that not necessarily the free space would be taken from E:\ meaning that some data might be lost, but I still don't understand why F:\ now appears empty even though I have only enlarged it.

Is there any way to recover the files that were on both partitions?

Is just a stupid mistake i've made at 2:40am and is a huge pain as my xbox is now functionless and all my files/games/saves are gone!

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Help!

You can't resize the partitions without formatting them. If you just changed the sizes and saved the changes in XBpartitioner, it will have formatted *BOTH* partitions for you automatically, thus they are now both blank. If you changed its mode to just write a new partition table without formatting, then your xbox is just looking in the wrong place for the BPB/FAT for the partitions now, and you can get some/all of your data back.

Either way, try the following:
1) Load up XBpartitioner
2) Change the mode (displayed in the top right) to just write a new partition table, not write + format
3) Change the partition sizes back to exactly how they originally were
4) Save the partition table without formatting, then reboot

If you don't get your data back from that, then you are just stuffed (it would require proper data recovery tools on a PC host).

but I still don't understand why F:\ now appears empty even though I have only enlarged it.

The E partition is before the F partition on the disk. Making E smaller opens up a gap in between the two. Making F larger then extends the *START* of the F partition into that gap. The space is not added onto the end. The start of the partition is supposed to contain the BPB, FAT and root directory, so even if you managed not to format F then the xbox is now looking for those vital data structures in the wrong location.

There is no non-destructive way to resize the partitions on the xbox at this time. If you want to change the partition sizes, you need to back up all your data to the PC via FTP (or xboxhdm) and then create new partitions, format them all, and copy all the data back.
