its a risky buisness tho, one small bug in the code can fuck the data on the HDD, so it will be a long time coming :P

Not an entire load of balls, separating cache and data partitions does contribute to a lesser-fragmented drive.

I dont often move stuff round on my hdd, but its still getting noticably fragmented.
It happens, obviously its only really a problem for modded xbox's, i was assuming thats what were talking about, since thats the only way you could run a defragger.
By that i mean you are much more likely to move/swap large amounts of data in and out on a modded box, games/movies/music and the likes.
My weekly updates of media center arnt doing it any good i dont think.
Still, i look forward to the defragger, when it arrives :)

That being said, an XBOX is a specialized PC that utilizes the same concepts, fundamentals and hardware of a "normal" PC. It would stand to reason that file fragmentation on an XBOX hard-drive would have similar, if not identical, effects on performance.
The XBOX community has taken the time and effort to modify and tweak all aspects of the original XBOX for functionality and speed. They have also been able to create some amazing software.
I have a FriendTech - DreamX-733. The memory has been upgraded to 128MB, it has a 200 GB WD2000JB, and it includes an upgraded ATA cable. I'd like to squeeze every ounce of performance out of it I can.
I don't believe that I am alone in my quest for improving the speed of my XBOX.
I think that it would be a great benefit to the XBOX community if someone created a file defragmenter similar to Executive Software Diskeeper Professional 9.

Caching makes no odds, thats merely a buffer and nowt to do with the file sector allocation. Having a seperate patition / drive for the cache or virtual drive will increase performance by some degree..
Sadly, if the drive is fragged to hell and increase will be well and truly lost.

I have an 1.6 crystal and so does my friend both with the 8GB WD drive, both do the defragging noise when idle (no not in the ms dash as it loads the background sound off the hd constantly). I recently swapped my WD for a 80GB seagate and it does it too, the sound is just weaker and quieter than the WD. And NO, its not the seagate inbuilt disk check as this drive is 2 years old, not new.
What say you to this?
Oh yes and please note, if NOT playing from the DVD any menu bg music will also use the HD so no defragging is possible.

No defragging is actually happening.
Short of FTPing all your stuff off, formatting, and FTPing it all back, I don't think there is any other way.
Do you really need to format though? Wouldn't simply deleting all your files off your partition work just the same?
