Title: Play Dvds Off Hard Drive
Post by: deweyhewson on August 23, 2004, 10:37:00 AM
hey guys,

first off, i'm sure this question has been asked in another topic and/or forum, but i haven't found a reasonable answer, yet. So please no replies of "dude, it's in another topic". thanks  :D

Ok, here's what I want to do: I back up all of the dvd movies that I own on my PC with DVD Shrink using as much compression as possible (to shrink them to like 2gb so I can save space on the HD and thus hold more movies), then I transfer them to my xbox so that I can just select a movie and play it instead of looking for a disc and whatever. XBMC, as has been stated elsewhere, plays the "movie" fine, but since I ripped the entire DVD i want menu support, which is basically why DVD video was created in the first place (along with better quality), otherwise it's just like having VHS. So my question is this: is there a program that can play dvds off the hard drive with full menu support? The documentation for DVD-x states that it can play off the hard drive, but for the life of me I can't figure out how. I was thinking maybe there was an Item command I could use in Evo-X to open the ripped DVD with DVD-x (Item "Better Off Dead","f:\movies\Better Off Dead") would that work? and if not, does anyone have any ideas?

thanks for your help!

No, there isn't a player that plays dvd's off the hard drive with menu support. You need to install Linux (Wine) for that at this time...

Why not just encode to xvid, save a bunch of space, and say "to hell with the menus".  :jester:

Seriously though, we all keep hoping that XBMC incorporates support for the menus, or someone else creates/ports a dvd player with hdd support...  <

hey, thanks for your reply and advice. I guess what I'll do for now is stick with XBMC to just play the movies themselves, but i sure hope someone creates some software that can do this (maybe DVD-x3?). I wonder why the documentation for DVD-x said that it could play off the HD. Typo maybe? Anyway, if anyone else has some advice as well I'd be anxious to hear it. Thanks.

Could you post the readme.txt? I am not home right now to look at it and I am curious  tongue.gif

I am thinking it was a planned feature that never came into fruition...

It must be pretty difficult to make a dvd player for the Xbox since no one has done taken this task on (like any of the dashboard teams).

hey,

it was my mistake on the whole DVD-x HD issue. I misread the info on www.xbox-scene.com about it that said it could "run from a CD-RW or from the HD" and I mistook that to mean the movies. I was mistaken. Thanks for responding, though.

What program's out there that lets you encode .vob files to .xvid. I have dvd movies like there's something about mary on my xbox harddrive that I ripped with DVD2Xbox that takes up 7.3GB's. Can I FTP these files and encode them one by one. huh.gif
