is there away of extracting a tar file on your xbox?
what util do i need?  <

Well of course the is. But you need a way into your xbox. If you have a modchip - no problem. Otherwise a game save hack, or the audio/font exploit would do.
Run a mini-linux, like the one in the MechInstaller from xbox-linux, or check the last link of my sig.
Find a way to run this mini-linux, by using one of the exploitable games, or just from you dash if you have a modchip. Once the mini-linux is running, telnet to your xbox from a DOS prompt. Then navigate to where you tar-file is (or ftp to the xbox first), and extract :
tar xv -f yourfile.tar

omg i dont know if there is a util to extract compressed files on my xbox, jeeze i must be a noob.

i knew you could do it on linux or course. but is there an actual .xbe app that i could run from my dash that can do it? thanks 'Idots'

I don't know about .tar's but I believe the latest of unleashx can now do .rar and .zip  <

Another program you could try would be Complex Tools 1.60

EDIT: I have never tryed a TAR with this
