But XBMC can read the DVD... just not other programs.
How would I turn it into an ISO?

It took ages 
but at least I have my roms on the HD now, only trouble is I have to go through and delete all the dross i don't want which could take days!Still love to know why only XBMC can read the DVD at all.

use something like simplexiso
that will make it into an xiso so your xbox can read it

I've noticed the same thing. I just use Avalaunch to copy files from DVD/CD's. Works like a charm.
