Post by: ysbox on March 06, 2004, 08:55:00 PM
Here it is folks:

LinksBoks Homepage

There are screenshots smile.gif

A binary should be available for those who know where to get it (i won't tell you).

Any feedback is welcome. Epecially those of you who have HDTV, please report whether it works or not.

Enjoy.

Yes good job.  I should be testing it out on my 55" Mitsubishi HDTV here in a bit.  Very good job indeed.  Glad youve answered this question for the masses who just HAVE to browse the WWW on their XBox.

Well great work! it is amazing to see this finally being worked on. Props for that.

There are a few things missing but it isnt like im asking for them right now, but
maybe you could give it a thought for the future? ;)

-Java Support (That would be cool)
-USB Mouse & Keyboard Support (Multi-lingual)
-Mp3 / OGG / WAV / WMA Playback & Player Frontend
-Filemanager & Downloading Files (hell yeah!)
(I like to listen to music while browsing)
-Flash Support (not too important)
-Screen Resize, you know the whole screen like in XBMP, so you can calibrate it
to fit 100% to your TV, thats something i love about every application that has it.
-Bookmarks Editor Double click on the bookmark closes bookmarks and goes to
the link, this only works by selecting the link, then hitting start.
-Startup Page, heck yeah i would like to turn it on and immediatly have it show up
a website.

Well it's a bunch i ask, but you did already quite a bit, and i'm really impressed.

Somehow i do not get it to start using a PAL Xbox, 1.1, running Avalaunch / Evox
in NTSC mode using the Advanced AV Pack, yet in PAL videomode it works.
(The browser just hangs, verified using eject and the xbox reboots)

Anyways, congrats congrats congrats, i'm really happy with the result, and wish
you good luck on further versions, i'm still astonished it came out without the big
hype usually such stuff gets.

Thank ya, and keep it comming! ;)

Yes, keyboard/mouse support would be kick ass, top priority IMO.  After that, the ability to d/l files.

This is good, I like it.

One thing, I assume the sockets are blocking currently and this is why it freezes up when loading pages etc. Well, since it's tabbed it would be nicer to have it non blocking so we can continue to scroll etc. while loading

Yes, this is definitely an issue, because it actually shoudn't. I must admit I haven't really looked into it yet, but I hope to get that fixed without too much pain.

CrayZEE, I don't have a clue about your problem. One solution would be to revert back to regular 640x480 resolution (currently it does 720x480 for NTSC) which works everyhwere but that would be too bad, a 80-pixel wider screen is quite useful.

Don't worry, you'll get your downloads tongue.gif
The code is there but commented out (see http://atrey.karlin....hots/shot7s.png - it's in text mode though, and you already have the menus etc.). I'll reactivate it and make it work when I have time. Remember this is just a pre-release.

As stated in the VERSIONS file, I haven't plugged any input devices in my Xbox but controllers (must be old school...), so I guess the support for keyboard, mouse, IR and so on would be difficult to implement and debug without them - and I don't like to code blindly smile.gif I'll glady accept any patches for this!

As for the audio player, I second snowbladenerd on this; I can imagine how nice listening to your MP3s while browsing would be nice, but let's concentrate on the browser for now smile.gif

I thought of an embedded HTTP server too, with some CGI support... you could have a page listing your games/apps/etc. and click on a link to launch them. That would make a funny (and highly & easily skinnable) dashboard replacement. Well, it's just an idea heh, you're not gonna get it any time soon... But now that we have a working HTML engine, why not make a more "advanced" use of it...

Anyway, what do you think of my text input method? Would you prefer a regular virtual keyboard? (please say no! I don't want to write one! tongue.gif) Is it actually better?

Thanks for the props everyone.

Awesome work... just tried it out.. and I'm severely impressed.  The only thing I can see missing (that could be considered urgent) is usb keyboard support.  Beyond that, I'm just happy to see it released and with open source even better, now some of our favorite dashboards will possibly consider adding this right into the dash... Great job again.  a sweet bit of work.. out of curiosity.. how long did it take you to port the code.. and is this a one-man project or a group project...??

Well, although I begun experimenting on this last August, it was for no more than 2 or 3 days, and I put this on hold until last month: it turned out to actually display things, so that motivated me and I worked a couple more days to put it together. In the end I think it was no more than say 6-10 days of effective work. No kidding! Wasn't that hard, really, at least way easier than I thought. If you don't believe me, grab a copy of links-hacked and do a diff. There is some work, I won't deny it, but most of the files are not or little modified. The Links code's quite a mess, frankly wink.gif, but it turned out to be highly portable, even designed with that in mind (Links already exist on multiple different platforms).

What's disturbing me now are all these people with NTSC boxes who can't get it to start; I think I've spotted the bug. If I'm right, that is related to the adv. AV pack. Perhaps you can make it work in low resolution until it's fixed by disabling 480p, 720p, and 1080i modes in your original dash. Or use a standard AV cable :/

Did anyone but me ever managed to make it start in NTSC mode without the advanced pack?

i have a ntsc box and i have no problems at all using the standard av pack. all in all you did great work with the port and it will just be a little time before i get used to the key input. what i did is i used an html editor and added all my favorite links in the bookmarks.html so i don't have to type it in when ever i want to go to a site i frequent.

Hey, thank you very much for LinksBoks.  Regarding the text input interface:  In the
beginning I thought that it was a bit slow (comparing it to a virtual keyboard), but after
a couple of hours of usage I can type a lot faster than with any other pad-based
interface.  Excellent!

A small note:  I cannot save the options I have modified (proxy, font size, menu colors),
when I try to from Setup -> Save options I get an "Unable to write config file" error
message and upon a restart all options are gone.  Is this a known bug/behavior?

I hope to find some time soon and go through the code, maybe even contribute some
patches.  Thanks again!

The text input method isn't too bad, but what slows me down the most is the fact it switches the image to the Xbox buttons layout when you highlight a part. I think it would be better to keep the rectangle of buttons (the colours tell you which button to press) and just highlight whichever rectangle the user is "pointing" at.

I just think it'd be easier on the eyes and quicker since you don't have to refind the letter on a second image.

Your DNS server isn't properly configured. If you get newsfeeds in Avalaunch that's probably because the site is referenced by its IP address so there is no host name resolution. Just give Avalaunch the IP of a DNS server, your gateway probably works, else try one of your ISP's.

Wishi, you're right, but while I'm not a expert ergonomicist, I think some people recognize the buttons by their colors, and others by their position on the pad. I also wanted to make the current active group pop up on the screen. Maybe i'll make this customizable later. Thanks for your input though (the same goes to everyone, btw).

nihilistic, I got this behavior too (damn it worked before) :/
However my settings get saved anyway. That needs fixing too, I guess.

doeboi: People said it would be years to write a web browser upto the standard of IE/Mozilla ... and they were right. This browser is nowhere upto the same standard, and it hasn't been written from scratch but ported so obviously that would be quicker.

I'll fix those HD bugs ASAP, it's just flags that I forgot to set. Also spotted a bug with PAL-60 (wrong screen resolution) that might prevent it from running in this mode.
I'll also make it fall back to reliable 640x480 on failure so it hopefully won't hang anymore when starting.

I'm making up my mind right now whether I'll make a quick fix just for that or make another release later, maybe with some features (re)enabled - keyboard support, downloads...

Ok. I am very eager to get the new linksboks program to work on my xbox to browse the web.

Problem:
When I try to access a site i get 'Host not found'

I realise this could be for amny reasons. But I'll go through what i have done. Im also using Evolutionx latest version.

1. I can already FTP so all them settings are up.
2. As i have a USB modem i've setup the Internet Connection Sharing and everything is linked up nicely.
3. I have the DNS settings for Freeserve setup.
4. I DON'T have the defaultgateway setting up as I dont know what it is for 512k Freeserve Brodaband. Appreciate if someone could tell me!

Ok. SO help would be GREATLY appreciated

*Update* Trying to type in freeserve proxy (www-cache.freeserve.com:8080). But theres a prob. How do I get the keypad up when typing in this box?!

*Update* Managed to get it in. Still same error. All firewalls are off etc.

Thanks for reading,

Adam

Out of interest i typed in ipconfig /all

I found out the defaultgateway for freeserve. Put it in my xbox. Same error.

Im getting quite annoyed.

Wow. Thanks for the info. Sorry to be annoying but could you make it more simple.

i'm using Internet Connection Sharing with a normal USB ADSL modem sad.gif. It does not have an ethernet port on it. just USB and phone soket.

Out of interest i typed in ipconfig /all

I found out the defaultgateway for freeserve. Put it in my xbox. Same error.

If you are using INTERNET CONNECTION SHARING... are you shure that it is configured properly on your PC.. and I'm guessing that you are using a CROSS-OVER cable to connect your XBOX to your PC.... BTW.. even though you may be able to FTP to you XBOX from your PC... this doesn't have anything to do with internet connection sharing, so the FTP would still be able to work even if the internet connection sharing didn't... ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) works well, but it can be a bugger to get it working properly.. and transfering ports with it is just a nightmare (well.. not for everyone, but for the average user).  Anyway.. try to configure your computer as following (it probably already is, if ICS is setup properly)..

IP: 192.168.1.1  SUBNETMASK: 255.255.255.0 GATEWAY: (should be left empty)

then on you xbox use the following values

IP: 192.168.1.2 SUBNETMASK: 255.255.255.0 GATEWAY: 192.168.1.1
DNS: 4.2.2.2    DNS2: 4.2.2.3

make sure you have your dashboards network configured for static and not dhcp in this case.. (how ever if ICS is working properly.. you should be able to use DHCP on you xbox without a trouble)

Just out of curiosity, why would you make the dns addresses 4.2.2.2? I've never heard of such a thing.. or is that an actual dns server out there? Maybe, cause I can ping it. But I've found that the pc can can handle all the dns requests, as long as its has the right dns from the isp.

ok. I had the gateway box filled in on the pc. so i deleted all in there.

But someone is taking up tv at the moment so i'll keep you updated later.

I know the SUBNETMASK is already 255.255.255.0 on the xbox but the DNS is not that number listed. May I ask why that number?!

My current ip on the pc is 195.168.1.4
And on the xbox  it is 195.168.1.5

Can i leave them alone (just out of interest). If it don't work ,obviously i'll change them to what you said use.

Also, i changed the proxy in the actual program. Shall i change that backl to nothing?

I've got to say to all who has helped me, THANKS!! Wouldn't of got this far without you especially you ilonely2

I can't get LinksBoks to run either. It locks when loading.
Running this on a PAL box without the HD-pack, and PAL-60 set to no. Bios is X2 4977, with EvoX. Only program I've had any problem starting - even Surreal64, that a lot of people had problems with, runs without a hitch.

This looks very cool and I am very interested, but I am having some problems setting things up.

In EvoX dash, I have my IP address set to 192.168.2.102, as assigned by my router. For the DNS values I used 64.59.176.13 and 64.59.176.15, which are ShawCable's DNS servers (checked their website). Here's the rest of the info out of my router config menu:
Cable/DSL:  CONNECTED
WAN IP:  24.78.***.*** (hidden)
Subnet Mask:  255.255.252.0
Gateway:  24.78.212.1
Primary DNS:  64.59.176.13
Secondary DNS:  64.59.176.15

The Xbox connected directly to the router.. not through a PC.

I basically have the app working, but every site I try to visit gives the error "Error Loading http://www.website.com: Host Not Found". I don't know what to look for next.

First of all WOW!

Works fine on PAL-60.
Text input is good once you get used to it. However, key repeat is needed, especially for del and backspace. I was editting the bookmark description lines, and my thumb turned black.
Mouse support will be great.

Noticed redraw bugs when scrolling the options. Just scroll down over the bottom, only the last two lines are redrawn. It also crashed when I saved the options from the menu (red box), but I could not reproduce it. Same goes for bookmarks.

Finally, WOW again.
Thanks

Yup, I know. I think I even know how to fix it, this involves being non-lazy for 15 minutes smile.gif It's probably true for the "can't save options" msgbox as well.

Yesterday I made the first downloads working. However the partitions aren't mounted currently so you can't download everywhere. That shouldn't be hard, I looked into the MXM code to know how to do it.

I also looked into examples of mouse and keyboard support. Seems rather easy to implement, but as you may know, i don't have any USB to Xbox adapter but I guess I could put the code in without testing. I don't really like this and I'd prefer having this contributed as a patch, but hell... You'll have to pray for it to work, as far as I'm concerned, as long as the gamepads do... tongue.gif

Then I'll finally make a bug-fix release, which'll address those not-starting-because-video-init-is-f*cked-up problems as well (expect *working* HDTV support wink.gif). However I don't have as free time as I used to these days, do it could happen this week... or not smile.gif

I used the method described in How to add 2 USB ports to a Joytech XBOX controller to connect USB devices. I used USB female connectors from a USB extension cable.
USB keyboards usually have a hub so you really need only one port. If you do this, make sure you use thin wires, otherwise it can be very difficult to close it up.

I'll check this out, thanks

And are you too broke to buy a USB adaptor for the xbox??? I don't understand why you can't get one of them??

I'd send you one for free (if it would help), but I live in the US.. and from my understanding, you are in France... don't know if I could ship it there or not...

laugh.gif
I'm not broke thank you very much!
I could buy one by myself, but the "problem" is I never felt I had to use a keyboard on my xbox... though I understand perfectly it will be useful in this case. I'm still considering it like a cool console and an awesome media center, but plugging a mouse/keyboard in it sounds more PCish to me.
Besides, my last keyboard is my trusty Keytronic which is still PS/2 smile.gif

But as I see emails and posts and stuff about "when will there be kb/mouse support?" keeping coming I'm beginning to consider this "investment", so relax wink.gif As I said earlier this looks obvious to do anyway, I have a very clear idea on how to do this, so I'll add the code -providing it doesn't break things- and it might actually work out of the box.

Hmmm, I get an assload of errors when I try to compile with VS.NET.

ysbox,

Is the conversion to .NET breaking the source?

Can you offer any version info on which compiler I should use?

Thank you for the first XBOX based WWW-Browser! It is truly appreciated! Once you add keyboard/mouse support ( I know it has been asked for many times ) it will really rock.

Downloading files will also be very helpful, so the user finds something they want they can simply download it straight to their XBOX.

I am truly amazed that we now actually have a first WWW-Browser because so many people said it could not be done, others said they won't try it because it takes too long to write one, etc. You proved them wrong - THANK YOU!

Everyone else seem to be able to use it, I do not know what is wrong, I am also using the Advanced AV pack with an HDTV, any help would be great, as I'd love to see how this looks in high def.

i have a similar problem, i have tried it on evox, avalaunch, with xecutor 4981 bios, standard av pack, and v1.0 xbox, but it still freezes on the loading screen. is there something i did wrong?

it starts out fine, but whenever i try to connect to anything, it says "Error : www.website.com - Directry/File not found" I tried with both evox and MXM.
what does that mean?

Sorry if this has been repeated

Yep.. it has been asked.. if you read through this thread you will find that question asked and several different suggestions on how to fix it...

Basically.. it's more then likely a DNS issue...

hey this is a really great tool but i want to actually use it!

i keep getting a "Host Not Found" Error for anything i put as the url and i even used wat was in the preset bookmarks....i dont know why it says this because in mxm it says im connected fine...ill tell u wat it says..

IP: 192.168.0.26 DHCP
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS1: 68.80.0.6
DNS2: 192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

i cant ftp to my box also...

From your readme file:

NETWORK CONFIGURATION: In order to browse the Web, you must have your network settings properly set up, especially the gateway and the DNS server(s).
**LINKSBOKS DOES NOT CHANGE THOSE SETTINGS**. That means it will use the
settings your dashboard has configured. So make sure you can access the Internet from your dashboard before running LinksBoks. If you are able to get RSS newsfeeds for example, you shouldn't have any problem with LinksBoks.

i havent tried newsfeeds but i am able to ftp like i sed b4 and play on xlink...any suggestions??
Title: Coming Soon To A Xbox Near You
Post by: ysbox on March 14, 2004, 05:08:00 AM
Being able to ftp your xbox and play via xlink doesn't mean your DNS settings are correct. If you have a DHCP server on your LAN these settings are normally automatically configured... maybe you can tune them on your router somehow. For example, your gateway probably acts also as a DNS forwarder; you could try to put 192.168.0.1 as your DNS1.

In other news, downloads are now working fine, and keyboard/mouse support is on the way (nearly completed). HDTV modes should be properly initialized too so it will hopefully start in progressive or 1080i mode instead of crashing. I plan to make a video calibration/mode selection screen, but not now...
Expect a new version soon (next week?).

Hi,

Think I've found a bug...I seem to be able to do it quite often...

When I visit a page, I click the white button to get the URL input screen.  Then i enter rubbish by simply pulling the left and right trigger buttons.  Then I hit the "start" button which is "Enter" for linksboks.  Anyway, that usually causes it to crash.

I've been reading and havn't seen any help on this subject with people using two nics, rather than a router.

I'm using two nics (two network cards). My dash is Evox, and MXM is linked within Evox (Evox is my startup dash). Yes I'm having trouble getting Linksboks to pull up a web page. I'm getting the host not found message (I think, I remember host in the message). It goes through the "looking for host, about 10-15 secs. Then host not found.

OK this is what I have.

Cable modem
From modem, ethernet cable to PC.
From PC, crossover ethernet cable to Xbox.

Evox
SetupNetwork   = Yes
StaticIP                   = Yes
Ip      = 169.254.140.165
Subnetmask   = 255.255.255.0
Defaultgateway   = 0.0.0.0
DNS1      = 0.0.0.0
DNS2      = 0.0.0.0
SkipIfNoLink   = No
SetupDelay   = 10

I've tried some of the suggestions mentioned in this topic, but none seem to work, so I put the .ini file back to the way it was in evox.

When inputing ipconfig /all, I get this. (these aren't my actual #'s, but we'll use them as an example).

PC ipconfig /all ===

Windows IP Config:
Primary Dns Suffix.................... : Blank
Node Type................................ : Unknown

I wasn't sure whats important, so I gave it all.
How do I use this to get my copy of linksboks working?

--------------------
Also I guess I should add.

Firewall is turned of (Norton)
Nic 1 = Reltek - PC
Nic 2 = Aopen - Xbox

I'm able to FTP, and play system link games over the internet with Xlink and xbconnect with the way it's set up now.

My Aopen Nic for the xbox is setup like this on my PC. Using Win XP.

"Use the following IP address" option is checked.
IP Address:------------  169.254.140.1 (real #'s)
Subnet Mask:---------- 255.255.255.0  (real #'s)
Default Gateway:------ 0.0.0.0            (real #'s)

"Use the following DNS server address" option is checked
Preffered DNS server----- _._._._        (no #'s here)
Alternate DNS server----- _._._._        (no #'s here)

The easiest option you have without messing everything up is to run a proxy server software on your PC (quick googleing returned this one which looks good enough), configure it properly and fill in the Network>HTTP proxy>HTTP proxy option in LinksBoks with 169.254.140.1:<<whatever port you chose>>

You may have to reconfigure your firewall to allow incoming traffic on that port (but only from the "Xbox" network interface!)

Good luck...

OK, I downloaded the program, and enter the IP inside of Linksboks like you said. I'm not sure what settings I need to change in the proxy program to make it work. Here are the options in the program. Just tell me what I need to change.

One more thing. I was looking around on the proxy website from the download, and came across this. Do I need to do this?

If it doesn't work even without the firewall, I'm stuck. Try to configure the proxy in IE like your last screenshot said, just to check that the proxy server works; for HTTP, server is 169.254.140.1, port is 808. Remove this afterwards.

Then make sure your proxy in LinksBoks is something like "169.254.140.1:808".

Put it in exactly like that, so it reads "169.254.140.1:808" in the  Linksboks file.

Ok, put it in exactly like that within Linksboks. I disabled my firewall at the moment for testing. Now when I try to access www.google.com from xbox/Linksboks, I get error message " ERROR LOADING PAGE http://www.google.com" and "ERROR READING FROM SOCKET". Looks like the host not found message I was getting before, just different message, but same graphics.

I also tried that last step your suggested (config proxy in IE). Once I do this, what am I suppose to do to see it helps. I tried connecting to the web through linksboks afterwards, with no luck. The reason I ask is because in your post you say "just to check that the proxy server works". Not sure if there is a step there I haven't taken to see if it works.

I apologize for being so stupid, and I'm not going to make up any excuses like, " I'm half asleep". When it comes to this I'm stupid. Also thanks YSBOX for your time and help. I appreciate it.

At this step ( pic below ), I put my IP in like you said, but when I went back to double check all the steps. I noticed the IP wasn't there anymore.

The thing I didn't do is, that little box to the right of the IP area. I should have put a check in there to save that setting. Also, I opened port ??? on my firewall. Is that going to be a problem?

Glad you made it work, congrats.

What I meant by "opening the TCP port 808" is: you should keep your firewall on but find a way to make a rule that says "allow traffic coming from <xbox ip> to 169.254.140.1 on port 808 (TCP)". If you can also choose the interface (that is, the NIC) where the traffic comes from, allow it only for your Xbox-PC link. That way there won't be any additional security threat to your system.
