It's not really that dumb. I too would like to see one of these, but with the ability to read to the user. It's some good entertainment having Windows read books to me while I lie in bed. Sounds like a robot, but you get used to that after a while.

I think he's just asking about an eBook (PDF) viewer, rather than a text-to-speech engine. It would be useful... find an open source PDF viewer, and you may have a shot.

There is a program I use in Winblows called Text Aloud, which will take any text file and convert it to MP3. You can download a lot of voices for it, and alter the voice to have a higher or lower pitch, faster or slower speed ect. Sounds kinda robotic, but with enough tweaking it comes out quite kool!
As for an actual EBOOK file format reader, I would imagine that there are plenty of those for Linux, but of course using Linux for something that simple is going a bit over board, infact using Linux for anything is going a bit over board unless your a system admin. Regardless if you wanna use that route you can do that, and download a screen zoom tool and you'll be all set.
I am sure once WinCE for the XBOX becomes more up to date that you could find the same thing under that which would be a LOT better because it is smaller, faster, and less messy.
The last thing I was thinking of is using UAEX. I am pretty sure there has to be at least one EBOOK reader for Amiga OS, I know there is a PDF viewer for sure, and there are screen zoom tools so you would be all set and not have to take up any space on your hard drive at all! The only problem is that those file formats can take a while to load and until we have JIT emulation added to the XBOX port of UAE, things will run quite slow. That and without Picassso support the image may or may not look so grand either.

I forgot to mention, there is a little app for the GBA which I use on my Gameboy emulator that works as an E-book. You can take any text file and convert it to an E-book which will load up under the GBA emu. It reads fine, and have customizable back grounds as well as a way to save the spot you left off on.

Here is a quick and dirty example of how the Gameboy E-Reader works. I took the Gospel Of Thomas and copied it from a PDF file, included a simple intro from the Gospel Of Thomas web page, and here you have it:
Basically Jesus's enemies could not control the impact and hysteria he created during his life, so as they say,"if you can't beat em', join em'". Only in this case they needed to maintian control so they simply destroyed scriptures that did not fit there plan, edited the remaining scriptures where they saw fit, and for a about 20 centuries (ecspecially in the early years when "Christianity" was being invented) kept the people in fear so that they had to choose between "Orthodoxy" or death.
What you generally assume to know about the times of Jesus, those that led up to him, and those there after, was all organized and put into place during this time period. The Church of today may be VERY different in that it does not kill those who do not follow its belive, but it still worships a book as the word of God, which they know full well was written with the blood of many innocents. Nothing sacred about that.
Another thing is people will tell you that the Bible has never been added to or taken away from, as if it has God's blessing or something. Well first off, the Bible like I said was put together under VERY inhumain cercumstances, by small group of people with "special interests", one of them not being to reflect the teachings of the Heretic Jesus as best they could.
Secondly, I can prove to you that people still do it to this day, take the King James Bible for instance. Check out the version that Catholics read from, then check out the version that all over sub-divisions of "Christianity" read from. All non-Catholics cut out 4 books, from the same version of the Bible that the majority of "Orthodoxed" Christians feel is the most reliable translation to date!
Funny shit there!
So as you can see, if you are sceptical about these books, then perhaps you might want to be sceptical about the history of the "Holy" Bible as well, and question the history behind its construction, and what things might be like if Jesus really had touched the hearts and minds of the Evil empire he fought against.
Anhow, back on subject, enjoy the read, if you like the GBA EBook viewer, please take time to contact the author and let him know what a good job he is doing. If you like this concept, then we should all start submitting books to read on our GBA Emus, I've got a TON to share, and no there not all scriptural and what not, I do have a lot of Horror, Sci-Fi, Comedy, and other stuffs which you would otherwise have to pay for...
Set those Ebook pages up, and post us some links!
