Title: xISO xFER FAQ
Post by: Shafted! on February 07, 2003, 01:25:00 PM
I downloaded the program, and i must say, the GUI interface is nice. The input boxes are intuitive and straightforward.

However, i cannot get it to work!

I have filled out the fields properly, ie, ip addresses, login/pwd, and it won't connect to my xbox.

I can get it to extract an xiso to a temp directory, but trying to extract on the fly doesn't work.

Under xbox partition i have tried "f" and "F" and "/F" and so on various combinations.

Under folder i've tried "test" "/test" "/test/" and other various combinations.

I get the error msg "request action not taken"

BTW, "test" is just a folder i created in the root dir of my F drive. Am I doing something wrong?

A good feature to add on to your program would be a "stop" button. While it was extracting a rather big game, ~4 gigs, i realized it was going to the temp dir and not the xbox. I wanted to stop it, and alas, i had to wait. It's not that big of a deal, but i'd still appreciate the ability to stop an extraction process once it starts.

Best Regards,
S

Post by: L!M!T on February 07, 2003, 12:37:00 PM

Shafted!

Thanks for trying it out and I did put some effort into the GUI to make it not only good-looking
but also as you say, intuitive.

Anyway, maybe I should have put some more effort into the readme.txt instead.

As stated in the readme.txt, you must enter an *existing* path in the Xbox partition textbox
and a nonexisting directory in the folder box.

Let's take your problem.

As I understand, there is a folder on your F partition named 'test'.

That is what you should enter in the Xbox partition textbox = F/test

In the game dir name box, you must enter a *nonexisting directory*, because this directory
you enter here, will be created by xISO xFER. So, if it already exists, you will get a
'Request not taken' error. Enter i.e the game name dir, DOA3, or something like that.

Hopefully, this will solve your problem.

As for the Cancel button, yes, I know, very stupid not to implement it, but it will come,
I assure you.

L!M!T

Ahhh, it's my fault for not reading the readme.txt file.

I did what you said to do, and it works like  a charm - good job.

I noticed that when you select an ISO, the program defaults to extracting to the hdd, it could be a good idea to not have the program automatically set it, thus forcing the user to select where they want the iso to go.

I say this because after i typed in my server info, i hit extract, and was like, "why isn't the space on my F drive decreasing?" It's not a big deal, just a small insignificant suggestion.

Your program is very nice though.  beerchug.gif

Maybe you can implement on the fly xbe name changing in the future? wink.gif

Cheers,
S!

Shafted!

Made the changes/additions you requested  smile.gif

The v0.2b can be downloaded from [ here ]

And yes, 'on-the-fly' renaming is something I have thought to add in a future version of
xISO xFER  wink.gif

It's raining in suggestions of changes/additions, I almost don't know where to start  blink.gif

Anyway, glad that someone found my program to be useful!

Hey, man i just downloaded it, and it's great!

Just transfered a iso to my HDDLoader dir, and it worked like a charm.

I can't do any coding, but i can write (political science major), so if you need any help with anything, lmk.

L!M!T,

Wonderful program.  You have made my life better.  I love this program.  Excellent job.  I do have a suggestion that would really kickass.  It would be awesome to incorporate the xbe renamer program, so we can upload the iso on-the-fly and rename the game all in one program.  Thanks for your hard work and dedication.

:)  :)  :)

Fellas,

I can't tell you how much I appreciate the feedback!

Anyway, I'm at a friends birthday party right now, and I am trying to get myself really drunk

It will be implemented, I assure you that. It is not that much coding to get it done, so I guess
you can expect it in v 0.3b!

If I don't reply to your messages here, you can always contact me by using the address provided
in the 'readme.txt' (if you guys ever read it, no pun intended Shafted!)   ;)

Gotta get going, dudes!

Have a good one!

Out of Memory Error,

I've been using Xiso Xfer to transfer mostly small isos, under 1GB, and it's worked flawlessly.

However, i recently tried to on the fly a big iso image (DOA XVB), and it stops and gives me an out of memory error.

I'm wondering what's going on here, as i am sure it isn't the program.

My page file / temp file, is permanently set to 700 megs. Setting it so it doesn't grow or shrink helps cut down on fragmentation.

Is that the problem?

It's more of a rhetorical question, as i'll try to get it working tonight, but if someone has the answer, then by all means, chime in. Maybe someone else is having the same problem.

Shafted!,

Where/when does this error occur? Can you specify the filename of the current file that is
being extracted when this error occur, and how much RAM you got installed?

Does this also happen when extracting locally (not on-the-fly)?

L!M!T

I have to say this is a Godof a program, it makes it so much easier to transfer isoz to the xbox, i had already notice about the speeds being faster using this, and i carried out a test using The simpsons road rage, with yours transferring the iso was going constent 2.1mb, with Flash fxp having extracted the iso it was going on average 1.8mb so i from now on am going to use craxtion (the release that had a bug to let you go over 4.7gb multigame disks) to make a 20gb disk with loadza files, i will then use Xfer to Xfer them over to the xbox.
Cheers for this app!

L!M!T,

I love your prog !
I only ran into an xFERed iso that wouldn't run with one of the previous version, for this one I reverted to the old XISO/FlashFXP method. But all the other iso I xFERed work perfectly !

May be you could implement a way to tell the program where to put the iso of the form partition:[\path]
Also you could try to 'guess' where the user wants to put his iso like pre-filling the 'dir' field with the name of the dir containing the opened iso (this would force you to also implement a name check for this field to prevent errors).

Keep up the good work bro.
Title: xISO xFER FAQ
Post by: L!M!T on February 18, 2003, 05:32:00 AM

SillYcoNe,

Thank you!

Yes, it seems that 'xISO' don't create 'true' xISO's (as also reported by other sceners), the
Xbox ISO format that xISO xFER was meant to work with. You can also see this reported
on the xISO xFER page.

I have got the same suggestions from other users regarding the syntax of i.e. D:games
instead of D/games and the 'pre-filling' of the game directory textbox. As I see it, the suggestion
of 'game dir' can, as you say, be taken from the dir where the xISO resides, or it can be generated
by taking a couple of chars from the XBE title. Don't know which approach I might take though.
Seems to me that using the XBE title would be 'better' in terms of assuming the game name
by looking at the dir.

Thank you very much for coding my request !
I just asked about it because I had to spend at least 32 seconds in the readme to learn what to type in the field. when everyone talks about the M$ everyone says drive:dir so I didn't figure out I should write in Unix style (although I prefer...)

Hey, no problem!

Try the new v0.8b, available at the usual places.
This will hopefully work better with certain xISO's that the 'infinite files' error was reported with
when using v0.7b.

Post by: akg4y on February 24, 2003, 08:47:00 PM
I dont know how feasible this is, but it seems like when you have a bunch of small files (ie Morrowind) it takes a really long time to transfer the entire archive because it has to stop, extract, transfer so many times... is there any way to tell the program only to transfer after it has 20mb or some bigger limit worth of files?

For example, if the next file is a 37mb file, it would extract and transfer

If the next file was a 1mb file, and the one after that a 6mb file, and the one after that an 18mb file, then it would extract all 3 before transferring...

I think that would speed up the process significantly.

Great program by the way!

Post by: akg4y on February 24, 2003, 11:09:00 PM
Also, it seems to hang everytime I try to xFER DoA XBV.. it hangs on the 700MB file.  I have an AMD Athlon 2000+ with 512MB of RAM and 300GB of HD space, so unless its the RAM I dont know what could be causing it...
Title: xISO xFER FAQ
Post by: akg4y on February 25, 2003, 02:21:00 PM
One other good feature would be the ability to set a 'queue'... Often times I extract 4-5 ISOs to a directory (from their rar/zip) and then want to transfer each of them, but to do that I have to be around when each one finishes.. itd be nice to be able to say 'put this one here, then this one here, then this one here' and then go eat dinner or something..
Title: xISO xFER FAQ
Post by: Shafted! on February 25, 2003, 09:11:00 PM
Darn! akg4y beat me to the suggestion!

I agree, a queue would be nice, however, it has to also have the abilty to do something else that he may not have mentioned.

It has to be able to create directories in numerical order, say pxgame001, then pxgame002.

Aside from this suggestion, L!M!T, xiso xfer has been working great. I just reformatted my 80 gigger, and been using it to transfer back all my stuffs.

A lot of us get the isos from rar files: couldn't you read directly the rars ? (sample code that may help you: jetpak.fr.st (I recommend this unpacker))

I also suggest you port your nice handy app to linux so that we can use our preferred OS.........

Your app is the SHITTTTTTTTT

I've used it pretty sucessfully lately and have only run into a problem with the infinite size iso's.  I just use Xiso and trasfer it the old fashioned way.  Keep up the good work.

Also, queue's would be a nice addition, as well as a cancel transfer in the middle button.

Thanks! Glad you guys like it!

Well, that 'infinite files' bug is a true pain in the a**. Don't know if there is any prog out there that really can create true, errorfree xISO's...

Currently slowly working on v0.9b and that version contains an errorcheck for the 'infinite files' bug, so you won't have to CTRL-ALT-DEL your way out of xISO xFER.

I am also looking into the queue/batch job function. Although, I have some bugs to hunt down first, like out of memory errors occuring for users with 64Mb RAM.

Anyway, keep on xFERRiNG, dudes!  cool.gif

Like I said earlier, glad you like it!

Have spent the last days trying to get the batchfunction to work and really got a breakthrough
yesterday, so hopefully it *is* working, but I need to test it and verify it before finetuning the
code. Can't even start thinking of releasing it before this is done.

I am also thinking of holding on to this release for a while, trying to add even more features.
Don't know how you fellas react to that, maybe you *need* the batch version and are waiting
for that release more than any other feature?

i'd vote for "release 0.9b when the batch function works well, save the new features for later"

IMHO - small, slick programs that perform one or 2 functions very well are tops. for instance - config magic. the batch function would be an excellent and logical addition to the current program, while any new features might distract away from what xFER was originally designed/used for. not sure what new features you're thinking about adding, but IMO the batch function would be more important.

LOL!

Hehe! Well, although there are some issues with v0.9b as you can read on the page, please download it and help me find the bugs. I have tested it, but since I know how the code works, I might get a little 'blind', therefore, putting xISO xFER to the test, with different setups, conditions etc., is the best way to bring them (the bugs) out. I don't like the fact that I don't have betatesters, except for you, the users, that report the bugs.

Also, I want to point out that I am not a 'programmer per definition', never claimed to be one either, I do this in my sparetime, my knowledge learned by 'trial-and-error', so please respect the fact that we all have the IRL to think of. This is also why xISO xFER contains bugs. I'm trying my best to fix'em up and adding the features you guys request, to the extent of my possibilities.

I will fix the most vital errors in v0.9b within 24 hours and update the xISO xFER download link with the updated version, so please keep an eye on the xISO xFER news page.

Have a good one, fellas!

RAR support (if possible)?

I second or third that. I have some rar files containing xISO's larger than 4 gigabytes, which I cannot  extract on Win98.  For now, I'll just have to see if I can extract them in PhatLinux onto an ext2 drive I have, then use xbiso or extract-xiso to unpack the xISO's. I don't have networking set up in PhatLinux, so I'll then copy the files xbiso extracts back to my 98 drive to transfer them to the Xbox.

Anyway, good work. It's what I use for everything smaller.

Title: xISO xFER FAQ
Post by: L!M!T on March 18, 2003, 12:36:00 PM

SillYcoNe,

The xISO would be split up in all these RAR archives and upon extracting the xISO in xISO xFER, I would have to find in which RAR acrhive the current file (in the xISO) is, where in that particular RAR archive it resides and then extract the RAR archive, then the file from that xISO chunk.

As far as I know, you cannot extract specific RAR files (R00, R01/part01, part02...).

If that isn't possible, one would have to extract all RAR files until you hit the correct RAR part file, check if it spans over multiple part files, abort RAR extraction, create any eventual directory trees where the file should be extracted (if not already exists), extract the file from the xISO chunk, delete the xISO chunk, and start all over again.

So, as you might understand, not only is it not worthwhile, it is simply not the optimal condition for xISO xFER to work in (regarding speed and so on...).

I think you would go back to use WinRAR to extract the xISO image and then use xISO xFER, or any ISO tool of your choice to extract the files.

Post by: Shafted! on March 24, 2003, 04:09:00 PM
L!M!T,

What a great time to release a new version of Xfer! I just formatted my 80 gigger, and i've never really be had the chance to use the batch feature of ver .9bu.

I'll start to xfer using v10b and its batch feature, thanks for continuing to develop xfer.

BTW, while reading the readme, i noticed you have a media check autopatcher - good job, does this patch the latest games?

Update:

When using the batch feature, i get an error msg that stops me from using it. It says:

" '4191140992' is not a valid interger value "

laugh.gif it kind of 'get out of bounds'...

If so, try to reduce the batch size by removing an xISO or two, and try again.

It will patch *any* XBE with the media check encountered while extracting/xFERRiNG.

When it comes to bug reports, y'all know where to reach me  tongue.gif

L!M!T,  i had the same problem as shafted, but with v.9bu-2. havent had a chance to test out 1.0. the problem occurred with many different combinations of ISOs. from 2 small iso up to about 7 or 8. happened when using the rename feature and without. tried a lot of different ways, but it just seemed to not want to run at all. the error comes back immediately. the single iso function works fine, but batch mode refused to run at all.

i had sent you a bug report a couple weeks ago via email. it had a screenshot included as well. once i get my xbox back onto the network i'll try again. got a bunch more ISOs to copy so looking forward to testing out the new version

Hey fellas,

I'll take a look at it. Have tried the batch mode myself, but not encountered that error.

Make sure I'll dig into it!

Just a quick suggestion:
Now we have a new bios (X2 4975) that fixes the media type, it may be interesting to add a checkbox to xISO xFER to allow the user to choose whether or not he wants to patch default.xbe upon transfer.
Personnaly, I prefer to leave the .xbe intact and let the bios do its work.
I love xISO xFER, keep up the good work bro !

I can get this to work, I did mange to make it work with 0.8 once but since than with 1.0 and 1.0bu I get this error  all the time : " CWD failed. /F/games : directory was not found".
I tried entering in the xbox part/dir F/games and f:games but both gave me this error.
Any idea?
thanks

You need to enter F/games or F:\games in the dir field and you need to tell xISO xFER the name of the dir you the game in eg: mycoolgame. This way you'll get your game in F:\games\mycoolgame
Also, which dash (and version) do you use ?

Also, your F drive must be accessible as well as the 'games' dir.

As a dash I use xbmp.
That's what I do f/games or f:games and a directory for the game which I don't already have on my box, I did read the faq you know.
I still get no results, and what do you mean by must be accessible ?

With some setups, the F drive simply isn't accessible (not used).
I assume you have checked this, or already have stuff on it, so you know you can access the F drive? Try to FTP to the F drive on the box. If that works, xISO xFER should work as well.

Does your other drives/partitions work with xISO xFER? Like the 'E' drive for example?

v1.0b contains a bug that makes xISO xFER try to enter a ' ' directory instead of drive/dir when running in xbFileZilla mode. This bug has been terminated in v1.0bU.

What dirname are you using for the game dir on the Xbox?

Since you got v0.8 to work, you should get this version to work as well. But hey, I am not saying that it is bug-free...

Title: xISO xFER FAQ

Because the directory you are trying to extract to (gamedir) already exist?
The gamedir will be created by xISO xFER, so the gamedir name you enter must be a unique, new name.

What happens, and this has happened only in 2 ISO's out of like 35, is that while uploading an ISO, the counter that counts down how many files left will keep on going backwards. That is, it will go past zero and keep going until you manually abort it.

Again, this has happened only during 2 ISOs, so i don't know if this is a big concern. Check your email, i've sent a screen capture.

By the way, the latest version is the bestest version yet!

For the next version, how about implementing some automatically directories? I mean, it gets redundant, to keep adding the same "f/hddloader" and changing "PxGameXX". I guess I am that lazy or something that i cannot do it myself.  beerchug.gif

True on-the-fly extraction would be very nice but beware of memory management problems whe it comes to extract a multi-MB file.... (I've already seen huge files in some games).
About the lack of speed: I noticed xISO xFER uses far more CPU when transferring than when extracting, maybe you can take a look at your display routines (try updating the info bars once per second, I think you should notice some perf improvement).
Just my 0.2 .....

Anyway, I'm prepping an Xbox for my brother at college (X2Pro, 120GB HD, Sammy616T).  He doesn't have a DVD-R drive and I've been sending him ISOs of backups we own and keep at home, but I was trying to find an easy way to get him from A to C, from the ISO to the hard drive.  I figured I'd give xISO xFER a go, and I was absolutely blown away.  It has a beautiful interface, a boatload of useful features, and can't-go-wrong ease of use.  Just wanted to drop a line about what a fantastic application I found this to be.

Devenic and Phiberz are the 'official' developers that have my approval to use the xISO xFER name. Who this Andrew fellow is, is a mystery to me. Since I haven't heard anything from Devenic or Phiberz, I will not approve this as an 'official' xISO xFER release.

Yeap...  True on-the-fly extraction with no memory limit is incrediable  (Did not know it was even possible...)

L!M!T u and u'r crew own XIso extraction....  It's going to be the slickest....  All in one prog....  So far the only thing it might be missing is rar support for u's lazy's that don't like to extract... laugh.gif
Well, some games are bad when release and need to be patch with more then just the media patch anyway's.....

The speed is incredible too.... and no need to mess with any FTP crap either.... If at first u don't succed...  Just extract again...  Automatically overiting the first extraction...

I would like to be a beta tester for xISO xFER if possible...  Let me know... wink.gif

Congrats to Devenic & Team xFER for all their hard work in getting this release out.  I have had the privilege of testing it in the last phases and must tell you that it is the best!

Not only does it work extremely well and use very low resources, it gets around that pesky RAM extraction problem and now transfers files directly. It also is capable of fixing most issues in improperly encoded xISO files and has a great batch file handling system.  It is truly amazing.

Enjoy it and please post your feedback on any issues here so that Devenic & Team xFER can address them.

I would like to use the new version of this program but for some reason it just hangs on the first file on the FTP session.

Have you tried a different ISO?  If not, try that and see if you still have a problem.  This is a pretty significant update to the code, so it's liable to run into problems that haven't been encountered before.

What ISO are you trying to transfer?  What operating system are you using?

FWIW, we've had 8 people work with this release and no one ran into that problem.  It's got to be something we can track down.  I'll be out of town for the next 5 days, so if you haven't figured out the issue by the time I get back, I'll try to help you figure it out.

I've used the version with "XBOX ISO Transfer 1.0 By Andrew" at the top with no problems whatsoever.  I would like to use the new version of this program but for some reason it just hangs on the first file on the FTP session.  I can extract to the local HD with no problem.   I put in my xbox IP which is 10.0.0.8 with the user/pass of xbox.  I told it to go to F:hddloader instead of F:games.  It connects then ask me what directory.  I accept the name then it hangs.  I've tried all kinds of things from to letting it FTP under Avalaunch instead of Evox, to different directories and partitions, different XISO files, different folders.  It all does the same thing.   One thing that is weird is...when I FTP to the xbox and check the directory of hddloader I see the directory it created and the first filename with a filesize of zero.   So it is connecting to the xbox correctly.

Any ideas?

(NOTE: forum removed backslash from path.)

Yep, problem solved :-)  use "F:\hddloader "  not "F:hddloader "

Nope.  The backslash is there.  Check the "NOTE" at the end of the message.  I do indeed have "F:hddloader".  I have tried multiple ISO's.  I will try a few more tonight.

I've tried just about everything I can think of.   Different dashboards.  Different paths.  Different ISO's.  The only other thing I can think of is I'm using 10.0.0.x IP's in my network.  I might try a 192.168.x.x IP tonight.

Don't assume I don't know much about the xbox mod scene just because I don't post much.  smile.gif

I Downloaded Xfer, all is running, could connect to Xbox and so. But wehen I load an .iso from an Xbox Game from Hard-Drive, and click on FTP upload all, then an new Window comes up, and then clicking on ok this text appears:

"You still have files/directorys with invalid filenames.
Rename or skip the entires, or cancel the entire operation."

Why does the Programm telling me that, and how do i change this to working perfectly?

Tried a 192.168.x.x IP and still no go.  It FTP's to the xbox, makes the directory, and writes the first file with a size of 0 and stops.  The application doesn't hang it just doesn't copy.  The clock will continue running.  I even check the task manager and the CPU utilization is nil.  I hit abort and it aborts also.  I guess I will go back to the old version for now.  BTW.. The OS is XP.  I've tried about 10 different ISO's so far that none of the other ISO programs have a problem with.  It sounds to me like there is something wrong with the FTP part of the program.

Hey all,

I was one of L!M!T's beta testers. I got an email a while back asking to be a tester again, and then several things happened.

1. no more modchip - sold it at an insane price, i couldn't resist
2. hdd died, lost the email address of who emailed me before.

I recently had a friend over, and he asked me to put more backups on his xbox. I used the new xFer, and i must say, it is totally kick ass. I had no problems whatsoever. On the fly was truly on the fly, the new version is very good. Good work guys.

I still haven't gotten a mod chip yet (sigh, waiting on chameleon), but i'm still willing to beta once i do get one.

Cheers,
S!

I am unsure what is happening, but I can tell you that this is isolated to your configuration.  I have tried over 207 ISO's laugh.gif with this program and ALL worked!!!

Maybe you can provide more detailed info about your setup. IP info for both your PC and the Xbox, complete with subnet mask, gateway, etc, as well as what ISO's you've tried, whether regular FTP software works and which one, what regular FTP settings work, etc.

The more detailed you are the easier and faster it will be to solve this.

I'll wait to see if there's something I need to do for digiblur's problem before I release the fix, to keep version chaos to a minimum.

The next feature update (new features, not fixes) will have some enhancements to output directory naming, and will address your request and also do some other cool stuff.

I'm back.  Digiblur...did you resolve your problem?

No...  I gave up and went back to 1.0.   My new mobo and Athlon XP CPU is coming next week.  Once I upgrade and rebuild I'll see if I still have the problem.  I'll let you know...  its weird that no one else is having this problem, yet this is the first piece of software I've had a problem with in the xbox scene on the PC.

Ok...  just a few things I did try...  Different Xbox...still no go...  tried it on a different PC with a Windows 2000 instead of XP.  The sucker works beautifully on both Xbox's.   But when I go back to the XP pc, which I'm not having any problems whatsoever on, it connects to the xbox, makes the directory, and transfer the first file with a size of zero bytes then stops.  The counter keeps ticking and I hit the abort button to cancel.

Are you using XP's firewall (or any other firewall software for that matter)?  I haven't tested with it enabled, but I am on XP and have no problems when connecting to my Xbox.  It has been tested with ZoneAlarm Pro without a problem.

And can you tell me if it creates an xfer20.elf file?   Please PM me.

Thank you for taking my request into account !

For digiblur's problem:
It seems to me that there is problem establishing the data socket when it comes to transfer files over FTP.
Directory and file creation are orders that go through the control connection so the 0byte file is normal. Then the xbox should connect to PC on port 20 (FTP-DATA) to receive the content of the file. If there is a problem establishing the socket, then the 0byte file will be there but nothing more.

digiblur: could you monitor the traffic on your network on ports 20 and 21 with a sniffer and post the result ? This way we can confirm my diag is correct or not. I think we'll see everything running smooth on port 21 then a SYN from Xbox to PC on port 20 and nothing more. (all ports here are TCP).

FYI:

v2.0 works fine here with XP Pro and XP Home. Both with Norton IS.

The only other thing I can think of is if he's running into an error in the transfer thread.  The user interface runs in the main thread, and the extraction/ftp stuff runs in a separate thread.  The version of the error logging system I used had problems with threading, but has been fixed with a newer version.  I've incorporated that into the latest internal build, and if digiblur PMs me I'll have him test it out.

just wanted to say, great work L!M!T!!  this is by far the sexiest looking xbox iso tool to date.  And it cuts extraction/uploading time in half.  Great work man, i appreciate it.

Thanks man!

But the v2.0 is not made by me. That's Devenic's baby, so I guess I'll redirect that appreciation to him then. But then again, if you have been using the previous versions, then I guess I can have a slice of that 'thank you' as well  wink.gif

Hey guys, i've got a suggestion...

how about the ability to shutdown your PC after the transfers are done?

Good job on the releases, xFer continues to be my most used app on my pc (in regards to xbox stuff).

I haven't checked in this forum for quite a while.  Funny you should mention ISO creation.  I have it working 100% at this point, but have some other UI stuff I need to do before it's released.

a little "bug" ive noticed is that some games are automatically created in folders with little "tm" or a copyright © symbol in the name, one of which is nascar 2004, the strange character isnt recognised in evox (or atleast not the oldish one im using) and this stops the game from showing at all
