Post by: X-eQteR on April 10, 2003, 02:32:00 PM
hi, i'm sorry if this is not the rite place to ask for this type of help, but i'll like to know if anyone knows what program i could use to encode this files to .wmv files, i own a lot of xbox dvd demos and i have lots of video files on them, but all of them are in .bik format and my interest is to convert them to windows media player files so i can use them on the new MediaXMenu dash. Hope someone knows. thanks in advance for the help.

RAD GAME TOOLS or RAD VIDEO TOOLS. can convert the .bik to Mpg or Avi then you can use windows media encoder to convert them to .wmv

Doh.... I thought I had written a complete tutorial, but it seems this is what I had actually written.

However, converting from BIK to AVI is rather trivial with the free tools available for Bink video.

Ok, I encoded a .mov to .bik, then to .avi then to .wmv, loaded it on the same folder as mxm, edited the xml file to point to the file <media>video.wmv</media> but when I load up mxm and go to the menu seletion it freezes up.  I am runing mxm .9g, what do I need to do to get this to work?

Are you using WM8 tools? Do you have a soundtrack?

The WMV file **MUST** be version 8 (though some have said 7.1 works as well) and it must have an audio track.

These are limitations in the decoder M$ provides.

BTW: There is a guide to directly converting MOV to WMV files on my tutorials page.

is media player just a command line program or is there an interface like version 9?  I have been trying to use the command line but it says that the compressed audio is not supported or something of that nature.

I use the command line app to encode my movies. Like somebody else said, Vegas Video 4 seems to work as well (I haven't tried it).

As for the audio, it's likely the audio in the source file is encoded into something non-standard. I usually try to make it a 'standard' like PCM or ADPCM when creating AVIs before the final encode to WMV.

FWIW (in my attempt to add something here) I used WM8 and afaik it only exists as a command line utility (unlike 7 or 9) and was unable to use the resulting files w/MXM.  I then switched to using Vegas Video and having that export to WM8 format and it worked smashingly!
