Title: Removing Evox Boot Logo
Post by: Manta_2005 on November 08, 2005, 06:22:00 AM
Hello all. I've got a v1.6 Xbox (kernel 1.00.5838.01), a Smartxx modchip with an Evox bios - at least I think I've got all that.. Picked all that up from exploring my Xbox and these forums during the course of today :) Just wondering is it possible to remove the pinkish EvoX symbol (displayed during the boot sequence). I've read about the EVTool (?) program which allows for bios customising and such, yet all the guides I found were for new bios installs etc. Could I FTP the bios.bin file (or whatever it's called) from my Xbox to my PC, load it in EVtool, make the changes and then FTP back the modified .bin? Would that do the trick?
Also, I'm running the EvoX dash - if thats makes any difference.

As you can see I'm as noobish as they come.
Please take pity and help me :P .
Cheers all.

Thanks heaps effbee05 and pezzar for your replies, much appreciated smile.gif .

Ok, after a little more reading/searching today I have discovered the following about my setup, and what I propose to do to edit my bios. Would love to know if it's the correct method before I do it, to prevent possible implosion etc.

OK my setup: XBox v1.6 (Kernel 1.00.5838.01), SmartXX modchip using EvoX M8 bios and the latest version of the EvoX dash I could find, v3935.

I'm going to aquire a copy of the EvoX M8 bios (.bin file) from the "usual places", which I plan to edit with EVTOOL, then copy it into my 'BIOS' folder found on my Xbox's C drive and then use the 'FLASH BIOS' option present in the EvoX dash.

Hows that sound?
I hope that's right!

Anyway, I would love some feedback.
Thanks heaps guys.

Just one more thing. Since I'm currently using the EvoX M8 bios (0xaa4d0820b932009090f780f0ee1d1b1c) and not the M8_16 bios (made for versions 1.6) I must have a different version Xbox?!

I figure if I stick with the same bios as the original (M8, for versions 1.1 - 1.5) I should be right yeah?

OK OK Just ONE more thing. Based on my serial number/date of manufacture etc. it's a v1.3 - confirming my suspicions.

Regardless, it shouldn't affect my afforementioned reflash method. I hope..

The preferred method of flashing smartxx bios' is to do it via http.  And if in fact you do have a pre 1.6 box, dont use m8...use x2 4981(256k) or x2 5035(512k) depending on how you have your banks configured.

Its super easy to flash if you already have your network setup.  Boot box to smartxx os(press power then eject when led turns red, if you have it set to quick boot, in order to access the os)  Your ip will be shown in the lower right hand corner of the screen.  Open a browser window on your PC.  Type the ip address into the url box and the interface will open up as a webpage...very straight forward...select flash bios, select the bank you wanna flash... then point it to the bios file on your PC....

AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH NNNOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

I've gone and fucked it up royally!
Really wish I had of seen the previous post sooner! lol

Being the impatient noob dickhead that I am, I went ahead and did it (it got the better of me!).
I stuck the M8plus.bin (after editing it with EVtool - EVtool would open the M8.bin) in my Bios directory in the Xbox's C drive, went in to EVoX (dash) and hit 'flash bios'. Everything seemed to go to plan.

Now when I boot up the chip as I did before (holding down the on button) - nothing. Led cycles exactly as before yet nothing comes on the screen. Nothing. MS dash boots as it did before, no worries there. When I use the mod boot method, then hit the eject button, the Led flashes (if that means anything?)
I can't FTP to from the box either (I normally use Flash FXP).

What can I do?

For the love of God, somebody please help me!!!!!!!!!!

If indeed you have a smartxx.... tap the power button....soon as the the eject light flashes red...tap the eject button, it will stay on the smartxx os screen, and will allow you to flash by http like i mentioned above.

Edit...btw on the smartxx os screen it shows what video encoder is in your box....
Conexant is ver 1.0-1.3, focus is ver 1.4-1.5, and xcalibur is version 1.6-1.6b

OK mate here's what happened. I tapped the power button (I assumed you meant continually - its the only way I could get anything to happen anyway), and the Led flashed red, on then off very quickly. When it did this I started tapping the eject button but yeah couldn't get anything to happen? Is this normally a hard process? Maybe I was doing it wrong? I
Is this the only way of solving the problem?

Thanks again.

sorry... lemme try to be more clear.... tap the power button once(dont hold it dont mutipress it) the eject led will go green for bout 1/2 second then it will turn red.  As soon as it turns red(which will only be for another 1/2 second) tap the eject button once. the smartxx os screen should now be displayed.....

So... once again

Power pressed once.....

The eject must be pressed once and only when it is lit up red....

Hope thats more clear  smile.gif

OK. When I tap the power button once it just turns green, stays green (no red at all) and then boots the MS dash. When I hold the power button (how I used to enable the Mod chip) and tap the eject button it flashes red and orange.
Perhaps I dont have the SmartXX chip? I just thought I did as that's what it said under the Xbox Media Centre 'modchip type' tab. Maybe XBMC thought it was, but it's something else?

Man I dunno, I think I'm screwed!

ok.... you dont have a smartxx...sound like an alladin or sumfin, xbmc says that in its lcd configuration, its not telling you what you have, it is telling you what lcd setup is selected...

I reccomend you crack the sucker open to verify what chip you have, and post a new topic in the relevant forum....  Good Luck beerchug.gif

I dont believe you will be able to fix it with out a programmer, or by hotswap flash on another modded box.... but maybe someone else has a solution.

What is this hot swap thing?

Thanks.

Edit: Yeah just found the tut. No way I'm opening the sucker up, I've done enough damage!

*

when you boot M$ dash and go to settings theres an info page and that gives kernel version. if it reports k1.00.5838 then its a v1.6 and dont use the evox M8Plus use the Evox M8Plus_16

to flash aladdin hold down power button for 3 sec untill it flickers at boot..  then it is open..

the reason it jumps to ms could be because u got evox.dash in wrong partition..

try install evox on f and c..

Hey Pezzar, I found this in the M$ settings - K 1.00.5101.01.

I know how to put the Aladdin into flash mode - hold for 5 secs till Led flashes then release, but nothing happens. How can I use this method to help me? Can I reflash from a CDr or something? What bios should I use then? Pretty certain the original EvoX bios was M8 (not plus or _16).

May have to return to Mod shop and get him to hook up his Aladdin programmer.

Anyone have any thoughts?
Cheers all.

this kernel version K 1.00.5101.01.
is def not a v1.6 more like a v1.4

so use the Evox M8Plus.bin not the 1.6 version
Title: Removing Evox Boot Logo
Post by: Manta_2005 on November 10, 2005, 05:18:00 PM
I think it is a v1.4. I also think the original bios I had was EvoXM8 (without the plus), perhaps this caused the problem? Another cause might be that I didn't copy the new hash thingo (givin by EVtool) to the evox.ini file, after I changed things in the bios (all I did was 'remove Evox logo')?
Is there a way to use a boot disc to at least be able to FTP to the xbox, so I could add the appropriate file(s) to the evox.ini - or is this unlikely to even be the problem?

Thanks again guys.

I'm not messing with it anymore. Took it back to the place I had it installed so they can hook their programmer up to it.
No more playing around with bios's for me.
