So after combing the various XS forums for the 4th day in a row in desperation, I think I've come to the conclusion of my answer.
There's no 480p BIOS solution for 1.6 owners right now, is there? I love my Samsung 54" but not being able to put my box on the 480p/1080i input's killing me. Anyone successfully hexedited appropriately the M8+/16 BIOS for progressive scan? Or has a work around? I'm using a Xenium Ice 1.6 chip with M8+ on it currently (like I have many options...)
