Title: Ind-bios 5001 Released
Post by: IND-Bios on September 01, 2004, 07:48:00 PM
QUOTE
Release info:
-------------

We are a group of xbox enthusiasts that just wasnt satisfied in how far BIOS
development has come, and decided to take matters into our own hands.
Basically, we went through the current bioses feature lists, and the requested
bios hacks thread on forums.xbox-scene.com, and implemented all that we could.
We are open to most feature suggestions, especially if you feel that you can
help implement them.  We are aware of 2 of the most requested features that we
have not done; xbox live hack, and embedded ftp.  The former we will not be
touching, sorry.  As for the later, never say never! smile.gif

We know how many people love to customize their bios to fit their exact needs,
and we made an effort to make every option that we could configurable.  All of
the configurable options are controlled by a .cfg file (ini style) on the
xbox hard drive.  We have included a win32 application that will edit this
file for you, which should eleminate user error for the most part.

Loading the config file from the disk requires a short delay while the IDE is
initialized. If you don't like the delay you can inject your config file into
the BIOS with our ConfigInjector tool. Note that an injected config does have
its disadvantages. Please see the ConfigInjector readme.txt for more info.

Please remember that this is our first public release, and bugs are expected.
Please report all bugs in the bios forum, on forums.xbox-scene.com, or #ind-bios
on EFnet.

A list of all the configuration settings and values is listed in the sample
ind-bios.cfg included.

Default file paths:
Custom Flubber - c:\flubber.x
Custom "X" Logo - c:\xlogo.x
Custom "XBOX" text - c:\text.x

The .x files we tested from http://xfiles.kernelbase.com/ needed their face
orientation reversed to show as logos, so if yours doesn't show that could be
the problem.

You can download/upload .x models and mslogo.bmp's from www.allxboxskins.com

Custom 'MS'
------------------
Filename:  c:\mslogo.bmp
Specifications: Size   - 200x34
  Format - 24bit
Transparency Must be enabled in the INI, MSLOGOTRANSEN=1
Default color is in RGB - FF 00 FF or Hex - 0xFF00FF
To Overide color, MSLOGOTRANSCOLOR=[hex]

LBA48
-----
Paul B's (oz_paul) full lba48 mods are featured, including support for an
on-disk partition table.

.06 uses the "F takes rest of drive" partition scheme
.67 uses the "F takes upto 137, G takes rest of drive" scheme

Please note that both builds are lba48 compatible, if you have a drive smaller
then 137gigs, it does not matter which build you use.

XBOX Live Block
---------------
We have included an xbox live patch in this build - it is, however, untested.
All games should be patched with smo's patch to disable Xblive.
All MS dash .xbe's should be patched to block the network completely,
stopping dash updates which the first patch does not.
Thanks to smo for this patch info.

Custom Error Screen
-------------------
Our error screen will give the standard error number + a brief description of
the error.  Kudos to superfr0 for the first user-friendly error screens done
so long ago.

Thanks and greetz:

this looks interesting -- could someone highlight the features that are unique to this bios, i.e. that other bioses don't have?  (in other words, what would be the reason to switch to this bios?)

The version number is bigger which should tell anyone with common sense that it's A LOT better.

Cuz its by far teh best BIOS. Specially if you dont like things stock. everything i own that is customizable is. Its just more fun too, you can change it and be like 'i did that'. Also, its the easiest to toy around with and its not really breakable, cuz you flash once and you change it with a .cfg file.

Any chance of adding FAT32 support, or failing that long file name support? This is one of the few remaining features that could really shake up the xbox scene again as big news, but heretofore no one has been willing to tackle it.

It'd be oh-so-helpful with Xbox Media Center and media files, for being able to straight backup files from a computer, and for running backup games, which more and more often are starting to have long filenames on them preventing easy backups and making it so we have to pirate a game to get it cracked if we want it on the hard drive.

i have a question similar to the ones posted ^^ other then the boot logo change (ms logo, flubber change)

lets say i dont care to have any custom logo i just like the X logo to come up purple.

xbtool can hack the 4981 bios with IGR/noDVD/No FLUBBER etc.

why woudl i use this bios over a xbtool 4981?

(great work just want to know what is "new")

like is this bios for PBL people? or people that just dont want to use xbtoom/m8tool to edit there bios? who is this the "prime" bios for?

If you don't need any of the features this BIOS adds and you're happy with 4981, then you can keep using 4981. This BIOS is gives users another option, is very configurable (without reflashing), doesn't require specific hardware, and will continue to be developed.

Looks very interesting, ill try it when I can. One question, does it check for the DVD Drive? Because X2 4983 and Evox M8 when animation is on it goes slugish about half way through because my dvd drive is fucked. Any chance of an option to disable dvd drive check.

Xb/Evtool have the option to disable DVD drive check.  I imagine that's what you want, though I've never tried it myself.

I too have no DVD drive in my machine (looped the yellow plug to fool it into thinking that the drive is connected with tray closed due to +5v feed) and have the same stuttering problem with the X2 and M8 bioses.

Haven't tried this one yet but the check/uncheck DVD option makes no difference to the stuttering in the other 2.

Seems like a nice BIOS - look forward to playing with it.

With the top "xbox live hack" they mean they will not make a bios that allows you to go on Xbox LIVE with backups.
With the bottom "Xbox LIVE Block" they mean a system that will block the xbox to access the live servers (like on the latest X2 bioses). This is useful if you accidentally connect to XLive with your modchip on or if MS implements later on a system that connects auto without you knowing it.

This bios looks AWESOME.  (haven't had a chance to flash yet, but it should all go great.)  My only suggestion would be to add a part in the config file where you can change the button combinations to IGR.  This would be useful for me because I have some really gay friends who think its fun to reset the game during LAN parties.  I made the mistake of telling him and so I would love it if you guys would make the IGR where the button combo could be changed.

My only gripe is that I have to do my colours in another program then pull the hex over to my configuration. Could you incorporate sliders or a colour picker or something? That would be polish on an already awesome BIOS and config kit.

so, Ind-bios, any plan on integrating mesh support in the injector like i previously posted? the config file is great but once you get it how you want, I think injecting the meshes and config would be great for ppl that want a fast boot.

Is it possible to make a XboxLive hack which not only blocks this Live-service; but instead REDIRECT XboxLive it to another IPadres /server???   ph34r.gif

In principle all XboxLive enabled games uses the same routing, connectionsystem and MS modchecking algoritmes.
If we could change this to a selectable private adress; which the theire connected server emulates the XboxLive server from MS, we could play online out-of-the box, without to hassle if MS is cheating on hacked Xboxes.  muhaha.gif

What I think would be cool is having the configurator tool run on the xbox itself. Use the joypad to position the 'x' logo and choose .x files, choose colors etc. Then just hit save and it saves the config. Plus you'd know exactly what it would look like on your tv straight away. No need to run a second tool on the PC and then ftp config files over and hope it looks ok.

The injection program is a command line driven program.
You must run it fro mthe command line, to see any output.

Windows will normally, run and then close the window if you just double-click it.

Ok, don't use the config injector. A late change in ind-bios causes a problem with  the internal config handling. Basically, the defaults aren't set when reading an injected config and may contain grabage data.

And a word to the wise:

This is the initial realease of all of this stuff, so I'd suggest you wait until the dust settles if you can't recover from a non booting BIOS.

May I humbly suggest a rewording in future wink.gif

I stopped paying attention to Ind-BIOS once I read the top bit of the announcement... until the other day when I was informed by someone that not only does Ind-BIOS intend to perform Xbox Live Blocking, but already has it in alpha.

the enighma modchip is a on-the-fly patching modchip.
It is the only modchip that can be considered fully legal, as it doesnt contain any bios. It only contains commands to patch the bios as it passes from the TSOP to the xbox itself.

Since you cant update the enighma, you cant use a new bios.
YOu have 2 options, use PBL to soft load the bios, or get a new modchip.

Normal BIOS : Has to be flashed to a Modchip or TSOP and will load at startup

BFM BIOS : Can be loaded to replace the normal BIOS in memory

Normal BIOS'es are for people with modchips and TSOP's, BFM BIOS's are for softmoders (ofcourse the're expections but don't bother about those)

Learn how to use Raincoat (If you don't know how already)

Download raincoat 0.7, FTP it to your xbox F drive, in its own folder if you wish.

FTP into your xbox and backup a copy of your current evox.ini file. Then make a new one with the first item in the menu, set to launch raincoat from wherever you just FTPed it to. FTP this evox.ini to your evox location so that it is the one used to setup menus, etc...

Now quick launch evox from ava, then just press a after 5 seconds or so to launch raincoat. Telnet in and flash that bitch.

Hope this helps...

I just added this in the exploits section and thought it would benefit the rest as well. This is for anyone that does not want to have to place the ind-bios.cfg file on the C: patition.

Use XBTOOL to unpack the ind-bios of your choosing. Either .06 or .67.  Once the bios is unpacked go to the folder it was unpacked into and open the xboxkrnl.img in a hex editor and search for ind-bios.cfg it will have partition information as part of the string it is in. as in Partition2\ind-bios.cfg change the partition2 to any suitable for where you want to place the .cfg file and have the bios look for it.
Here are the options.
Partiton
1 to load the .cfg from partition E:

6 to load the .cfg from partition F:

7 to load the .cfg from partition G:

Now save the edited xboxkrnl.img and repack it using XBTOOL. This can be done for both BFM versions and for chip versions.

Firstly, i have flashed it to my modchip using evox, all went well in that regard.

However, when i powered on the box, (after getting the usual 'LOADING IND BIOS SCREEN) the flubber is displayed (with the new camera angles i specified).

Once the flubber is finished, the green X and IND-BIOS is displayed as expected.. this is where things start to get weird...

Usually the flubber screen fades into EVOX.  It still does this, however it takes literally 30 seconds for the fade to complete.  Once it has done this, evox runs SO SLOW it is barely usable.

For example, when i press the DOWN arrow on the DPAD, it takes about 5 seconds for the scroll bar to select the next entry.  It is literally running in slow motion.

I flashed the .06 iND-BiOS version, and then all run at a normal speed!

I re-flashed the .67, and got slo motion again.  Also, when the .67 is flashed, i cannot see my G Drive.  I could previously see my G Drive using the M7 / M8 bios.

Would it be possible to modify the .06 iND-BiOS using XBTOOL to enable G Drive support?  If so, this would resolve the slow motion problems..

Any suggestions / help would appreciated.

Thanks all!

Could you give a little background info?

Which version of Evox are you running?

Is Evox set up to search your G drive for games/apps?

What brand and what size drive do you have?

Did you format the drive in the Xbox or using a PC?

What did you use to format (e.g. Evox, XBHDM, XBpartitioner, Xenium OS, etc)?

If it was formatted by Xbox software, what OS was running at the time?

Have you ever used XBpartitioner to write a partition table to the drive?

Have you tried using another dashboard which supports the G drive and, if so, did it work?

I know this is just a beta version of the bios but it looks great I am just having two problems with it. I set it to load unleashx on my C partition but it keeps doing somthing funky where unleashx is reset back to the way it was when I first installed it. If I boot up with x4981 it loads unleashx the correct way. Any ideas why this bios is doing that?

My other problem is I cant change the "iND-BIOS" where "MS" is on the normal BIOS. I put a mslogo.bmp in my c partition and in the cfg of the bios I set it to MSLOGOTRANSEN=1. I saved it as a 8bit channel bmp so it became 24bit like they said. I even downloaded the "XBox-Scene mslogo on White BG" from xbox skins and put it in my c partition. Any have/had this problem and how can I fix it?

Thanks,

I just put this bios on my chip and I love it.  No problems installing at all really.  I noticed a few issues with the config maker, it seemed like it would not load all of the colors for the X logo or the flubber that I had saved.  Besides having to reselect a color or 2 each time I had no issues and I love it.  The load time is a little slower but not really by that much and you only need to turn on ur xbox once to start playing....

Keep up the great work guys, I am going to continue to use this bios for awhile.  Specially since the new X3 bios is only going to work on the X chips!  This is going to be the bios that I will be following for new releases.

That major thing I would love to see in a bios is FTP or giving the ability to map a network drive.  Would be handy because I could copy over all my MP3 and still access them from my computer and play them WHILE I am playing an xbox game.

Also, this idea may seem a little out there...I had posted in the software dev forum but they said it was more of a bios issue.  Would it be possible to setup network and stream a program from a networked computer harddrive?  The gamecube supports streaming, although in a very different way but it seems to me if you could impliment network support into the bios then it should be possible to design a way that a dashboard could load a program and stream it over the network.  This would save a lot of time with burning dvds or wasting them on bad burns.  Would also be easy to deal with the whole xbox defrag issue and long file name issue if you could run all the programs off a comp harddrive since you can defrag a comp hd easy and ntfs will support such huge file names.

I dont know a whole lot about xbox hacking or bios making but I am in my second year as a CS major with some networking experience and it seems like it SHOULD be possible to do this, although a lot of work I am sure.

I thought I remembered seeing that the xenium OS 2 supported networked ability inside the BIOS so you could flash or install a dash right over the network without ever having to burn an installation cd (def saves issues with the crappy drives not reading media).

Here is another crazy idea I was thinking about and saw in a different thread....

Would it be possible to add a type of "save state/load state" like emulators use in the bios?  It seems to me this would have to be in the bios since the dash is not running at the same time as the program.  It would probably be hard to setup I am sure, but dont really know since I dont fully understand how emulators work to do it in the first place.

If you could develop a bios that has a save state support in it you would be like king of all bios I think...
Title: Ind-bios 5001 Released
Post by: QuimbyDogg on September 15, 2004, 08:45:00 AM
I dont know if you would need to see a menu necessarily... You could make it a certain combination of buttons, kind of like how the in game resets work...

Support something like 3 or 4 different save states for each game:
left trigger, right trigger, back are the constants then picking any 1 of 4 other buttons will save your state in that slot.  Each of the colored buttons could be a different save state then.  So...
to save in slot one I hit left, right, back, and x
to save in slot two I hit left, right, back, and a
to load from slot one I hit left, right, start, and x

That type of setup would work fairly well I believe.

So yeah, I guess the issue is how long it would take to do.  If states are done from memory dumps I am guessing it would take a short while to do, but I dont know if it would take all THAT long and it would be GREATLY helpful imo anyway.
Title: Ind-bios 5001 Released
Post by: d0wnlab on October 07, 2004, 03:44:00 PM
Save-state would be very hard if not impossible, I think it's been discussed before.

With an emulator of a classic system (lets say, SNES), a save-state is just that, a dump of the entire memory map as well as all the registers.

With the xbox, it'd be much harder.  You're dealing with virtual memory and caching, which to load and save exact copies would be orders of magnitude more complex.

Try using the default config that is supplied and paste in your changes.
I have exactly the same problems and have found the above to work. I just need to test more to find out what can be removed or modified.
Eventually I would like an XBMC bios with no ani, an XBMC logo and text only.
