Stupid question...Is it possible to flash the stock bios or do you have to buy a mod chip???

you can use an exploit in 007:AUF to boot raincoat (or evox, but evox doesnt work with all TSOP's), and flash the tsop.
You'll have to wire a couple of points together first though.  As duudfromnorway, do some looking around on this board, especially the pinned topics in the tsop forum.

hmm.would it be possible to extract TSOP bios information and edit it a tiny bit so it boots to a hacked dash instead of xboxdash.xbe? I think if you could modify it to lboot Avalaunch, you could play backup games off you H.D. and still be able to connect to live...

once you edit it, the checksum changes, and you will get banned from live.

I think that's pretty much what the hacked BIOSes are.

1) Take an original M$ BIOS
2) Break all the bits that force the console to only run software that's been "signed" to run
3) Break Macrovision
4) Alter the XBE filename it looks for when booting up, to load a different dash
5) Optionally replace the naff M$ logo with an even naffer logo of your own

You need software running that can flash it and that software is unsigned.

You need to either use a software exploit method to flash it or borrow a modchip.

This tutorial may help.

Do you mean flashing the TSOP, the chip containing the original bios, or flashing a chip with the ms bios itself?

Both are possible, but the second one doesn't seem like it would have much of a purpose...check out the TSOP flashing discussion topic.
