Title: Flashing Bios Success Rate

Hey, I have a xecuter 2.1lite chip in my xbox and I have the x2 4977 bios installed.  I want to make it so that the cromwell bios are on one of the banks and the x2 4977 bios on the other so that I can reflash the second bank in the future when new better bios come out but still be safe knowing if somethign goes wrong I always have the second bank to flash with.  How often do bad flashes occur and also how would you recommend me flashing into the two banks?  Should I use evox to flash them or are there any better, more stable apps that will flash them?

I've flashed my modchip and tsop many times.  I've modded 14 boxes and had to flash all of those, and i've never had a problem.  Bad flashes do occur, but not that often.  It's good that u have a backup like that.  Evox is ur best bet for flashing.

Thanks for you info but I also have another question.  I have been searching all over the forum's for a tutorial on how to flash multiple bios with a x2.1 lite chip.  I haven't been able to find a good tutorial though.  Some people say that you have to put both of the 512k bios into a 1 meg file and others say that you can leave them both just as 512 bios.  Do you know of a tutorial that will walk me through flashing multiple bios?  I have been searching all day but nothing has come up.  Also people have said that FlashX is the way to go instead of using evox to flash.  Is it more stable or something than flashing with evox?

What you are going to need to do is to fit the external switch bank on the front (if u haven't done so) : http://www.worldxbox.co.uk/X2-1.jpg

Then, make ur 2 bios 512k each and put then in ur bios folder on c.  Then, flash ur chip with one of the bioses, then switch to the other bank and flash the other.  I mainly specialize in tsop flashing, so I want someone to verify this.

::EDIT::  I think you just make a 1 meg bios with one half being cromwell and the other half xecuter (use x2 bios manager).  Again, i'm not 100% sure, so could someone verify the info i'm giving?

Ok thanks a ton for looking that up for me.  Let me verify though just to make sure   (better to be safe than sorry  biggrin.gif ).  From what I have read you can basiacly do it either way.  Make a 1mb file consisting of  2 different 512k bios.  And when you flash that it will put both of the 512k files into their banks.  Also many ppl have said that they flashed one with a 512 and then went to the other bank and flashed with a different 512k file, not making a 1mb file at all just 2 different 512k files.  Correct me if i am wrong.  I dont want to try it and then have a giant paperweight.

Yeah, i'm glad I could help you.  I think you would be better off flashing one 512k bios at a time, just in case you have a bad flash with the 1024k bios.  Let me know how it goes.

Hopefully sometime this week I will have time to try it.  I got way to much school work.  O well    Oh before I forget, should i use the newest verison of FlashX or evox to flash?  I was also looking at the comparsion chart for bios and they dont have anything for cromwell bios.  I am guessing they aren't really good for much.  So should i go with x2 4977 with the hack that lets me get a harddrive over 137 gb's and then the newest version of the evox bios?

The only reason you would want to use cromwell is for linux, but you can still run linux with the other bioses.  Most people do a split with the latest xecuter bios and the latest evox bios.  In my opinion, the X2 4978.03 is the best bios out there, and for me, splitting my tsop with x2 4978.03 and evox d6 would have been pointless, so I flashed my other half of my tsop with a debug bios to run the developers stuff.  Anyway, if the purpose of this is to be able to flash the other half in case one goes bad, then your best bet is to run andx2 bios and an evox bios.

yeah i am thinking about running linux on one of the bios.  I want to stick with the x24977 jsut because i have heard that a ton of ppl with x2 lites had problems with the newest x2 bios.  Oh and also what is the best and newest evox bios.  From what i have seen on the bios comparsion chart they are pretty much exactly the same.  Or is it the M7 bios that can only be put at 512k?

EvoxM7 would be the newest evox bios as it supports all versions of the xbox (even V 1.4 and V1.5 with the new focus video encoder chip)
if you have a v1.0-1.3 xbox i would use the X2 4977 bios tho (although if you store evox on your c drive you could always try the newer X2 4978.03 bios)(NB:the X2 4978.0x bios can not AFAIK be made to boot evox from anything but the C: drive even after i try editing the bios manually and in xbtool)

Yeah, i've also heard about problems with the newer x2 bioses wreaking havoc on 2.1's and 2.2's.  If you want to run linux, you can use cromwell if u want, but i'm running gentoox perfectly fine from my x2 bios.  M7 is the newest bios, but it was developed for the newer xboxes (1.4 and 1.5) because none of the other bioses would work on the tsop.  So I think the version you want is evox d6.

Can the evox D6 bios be made into a 512k file because i thought it was only a 1024k file?  I am probably wrong though.

You can use xbtool to change the size and many other features of the bios.

ok that is what I thought.  sorry for asking so many questions but should i use the newest version of FlashX to flash them or use evox to flash them?  And also in xbtool would i have to change the order of how the dashboard will load for the second bios so that it doesn't load evox first but instead loads gentoox or whatever other dash i put on?

Here's a screenshot for xbtool.  Yes, you can tell the bios which dash to boot from which partition.  I've never used FlashX, but evox has worked fine for me everytime.

Yeah, no problem.  In terms of linux, I would recommend gentoox.  It is the easiest for beginners and is updated frequently (new version was released today).

biggrin.gif        i want to put the evox bios in my second bank so i went into xbtool and edited everything the way i want it.  But I want to run only gentoox on these bios.  So in xbtool what .xbe should i have to boot first under the boot partitions and executables part?  Cuz if i put the evoxdash.xbe as first it will boot evox which i dont want to boot first.  Or will I have to put gentoox on a whole different partition on the xbox since it is so big?  Right now i only have the stock 8gb harddrive with only like a gig and a half left.  I will be getting a much larger one within probably a month or so.

Hey,

To run gentoox off of your hard drive, you will need to wait until you get a bigger hard drive because gentoox takes up 3.5 gb of space.  But once you do get a bigger a hd, you can choose to install it on your e or f partition.  So... the executable will be e:gentooxx.xbe or f:gentooxx.xbe

biggrin.gif    I ended up using x2 4977 and evoxM7 bios.  For anyone who reads this in the future I used flashX v1.2 to flash it and made 2 seperate bios files each being 512k instead of making a 1 mb file consisting of each.  As soon as I get my bigger harddrive gentoox is going on it right away.  Well thanks a ton again for all your help.  Couldn't have done it with out ya   beerchug.gif
