Ugh...does this mean the parallel cable I got was too long (shortest I could find was 6ft.), or does it mean that the guy who installed it for me did it wrong?

Could mean either. Did your chip come with the Cromwell bios installed on it (I think the last batches of X2Pro 2.0 and on did)? If that is the case and you get a frag with the chip enabled and MS Bios/Normal with the chip disabled then your D0 is correct and LPC points are bad. If you get the cromwell bios with it enabled and just can't find it with X2BM that suggests the cable or some connection issue (what version chip do you have - this would be real helpful).

You can remove the metal sheething on the chip's parallel connector by taking off the hex plugs with a needlenose pliers. That lets you plug it directly into a parallel port on another machine - no cable needed. Many times a 6' cable will work fine but the flash just doesn't verify. Port-to-Port at least takes the cable out of the equation.

If you get the MS Bios regardless of enabling and disabling the chip then the D0 point is not grounded (faulty install). When the D0 point is grounded the box looks for an alternative bios on the LPC points. If there is no bios or bad LPC contact you get a frag. If contact LPC and bios is present - you'd get cromwell or whatever else you put on there. If you are not fraging and not seeing the cromwell bios it is your D0 point.

I would talk to your installer and see what he/she suggests. However, are you absolutely sure that it's the MS bios? A lot of hacked bios' look like the MS bios. Did he say he was leaving cromwell on there? Either way, contact him and get it squared away as he either changed the bios for you or the D0/chip has come loose.

He said he was leaving the Cromwell bios on there because he couldn't flash it using the parallel port method, so I don't think it's one of the old bioses. I suppose the d0 grounding wire could have come loose during shipping, and I could probably get one of my local friends to work on it with me. Only problem of course is the proper screwdriver and the bit about the d0 point being the most intimidating part of the install. When you say you don't think it's grounded, do you mean that the grounding wire may not be screwed in or that the wire going to the d0 point itself could have come loose?

I greatly appreciate your help btw, and you're the first person here who's really been able to give me insight into the problem.

I'll tell you - if the xbox is loading the MS bios regardless of enabling/disabling the chip then the chip isn't installed properly - that's the bottom line. Once D0 is grounded it either finds a bios on the LPC points (Cromwell) or it frags - it never defaults back to the MS bios.

So what is causing this?

D0 point is not connected correctly: this could be that the wire attachement to D0 isn't connecting to the chip properly, something has come loose from the actual D0 point and needs to be resoldered, or perhaps the enable/disable mechanism may also not be connected correctly (I only assume that for it to work correctly everything needs to be attached otherwise there is no grounding).

You might have other issues too - I don't know but right now D0 isn't grounded and your box isn't going to load a bios from the LPC points.

If your up and running try using flashX to flash your chip. Most likely you will never need cromwell again so you can get rid of it, but you have 4 banks so it may be cool just to leave it on one incase you ever want to use/see it.

He's not up and running.

He only gets MSbios chip with on/off no difference no frag. Installer told him he couldn't get the chip to flash. No cromwell, no hacked bios, no working chip, no frag = chip not installed correctly or something came loose in shipping.

Well, thanks for the help. The guy who installed it left for Europe until August 11th, so it looks like I'll have to try and tackle this with the help of some of my friends who know how to solder.

Well, I opened up my Xbox last night, and sure enough, the d0 point wire wasn't even connected to the board anymore and must've come loose during shipping. Taking it over to a guy today to get him to solder it back on for me. $10 and a 40 minute drive though :/
