Title: Exploit Or Modchip?
Post by: Gman13 on January 02, 2004, 11:40:00 AM
Im thinking of modding my xbox and I want to know whether I should just get a modchip or use exploits. I've read alot about how to mod using exploits, and now im thinking of buying the stuff to do it. (router-$30, Action replay-$30, + renting 007-$5)

I know that modding the exploit way is more expensive (for me), but... what should I do... ohmy.gif

1. Should I just buy a modchip and install it?dry.gif
2. Is using exploits easier than installing a modchip?dry.gif
3. Which is safer and less likely to damage the Xbox, installing a modchip or installing Evox using exploits? dry.gif

depends on a few things... do you have soldering experience? do you have soldering materials? Personally I'd say that if you don't have either of those, your best bet is to soft mod... but I'd recommend the catfish installer over other methods... no router required.   <

Mod chip all the way.
Takes about an hour from start to finish if you have never done it before.  <

exploits all the way !!

router-$30 ? use a crossover cable instead 6 bucks at radio shack
Action replay-$30 ? got a extra usb plug setting around just make your own and download the software it's simple!!
renting 007-$5 ... you are gonna wanna find you a used copy you will need it if something goes wrong!! pick up a used copy at gamestop or a game store for 10 bucks !
good luck   <

If you're a fuckin idiot; modchip is for you.
If you have some interest  in tweaking and playing with things, and you can tell the difference between a 3-prong wall outlet and a molex power connector, I'd recommend an exploit.

i have had experience with everything, modchips, tsop flashing, audip and font exploit.

by far teh way to go is an X2 pro modchip preferably.

i am retarded when ti comes to soldering, and i have installed like 4 flawlessly.
the tsop is great allso if u can solder well.

fonts are gay. audio is safe but a waste.

I have modded about... 5 xboxes with a softmod and never had a problem.  If you are lazy (which is okay) get a mod chip.  If you don't mind readin' up on it (all in X-S fourms) then go for the softmod.  Exploits are a lot more safe then mod chips (if you back-up everything).  If you dont know what you are doing (solderin wise) you can seriouly F* up your xbox (i tried the mod chip, sqrewed up my daughter board and could only play two players up till today when my new one came in).  But either way good luck, and happy moddin'.  <

ok, I just bought 007 and a crossover cable, and now I need some kind of memory card. Any advise which is the best memory card to use and the cheapest? (Action replay, Gamekey-x...or is there a way to load up evox without having to buy a memory card?)

If there is a way to load it up without a memory card, how hard is it to do it? do I need to solder...(I have no solder skills or tools)

(im probably sounding really stupid  tongue.gif )

If any1 can help it would be greatly appreciated.!! Thanx

I suggest action replay. So far nobodys had a problem with it. If you have a friend that has a modded xbox and a mem. card then have him put evox on the mem. card. Then you borrow it and put evox on your box, then your set.  <

You can hotswap the hard drive to load a software exploit - I've done it that way 3 times now.  The memory card is probably easier, but you'll need a way to get the save on to it.  I have a friend that's used an Action Replay - or you can also load the save game hack from someone else's xbox that already has it (I keep it on my Xbox hard drive all the time for just this purpose smile.gif

I have always used the font exploit, but only long enough to flash the TSOP on the box.  If you're looking for a long-term software mod, I'd strongly suggest the audio exploit (no clock loop woes).

i can do everything that your xbox w/ Xecuter chip can do except go on live. and i dont care about live.

I agree completely.  Hotswap -> softmod -> raincoat -> TSOP flash is more trouble than a modchip (especially the first time you do it) but it's free (well, you might have to buy a soldering iron or some conductive paint to write-enable the TSOP if you don't already have one of those items laying around).  If you want an easy install or want Live, buy a chip.  If you want free and don't mind screwing around with stuff, the TSOP flash is the way to go.  Either way gives the same end result - you can play the same backups or use the same homebrew software.

I'd recommend you not use Action Replay.  I had nothing but problems with it.  I've read posts where people have gotten it to work, but when I tried using the 007 hack with AR, I kept getting Error 21.  I returned AR and bought a M$ card and made my own cable following Vintage Guitar's guide.  That worked great, no problems.  I read other people having the same problems with Action Replay as well.

This make your on cable guide your talking about, what is it?  I can't seem to find it.

Edit:
Nevermind, it seems you were refering to making your own USB adapter to use your XBOX controller on your PC.  Then putting the memory card in the controller and uploading the files to the memcard using Action Replays downloadable program.  Just thought I would clarify for the other people out there who didn't quite catch what was being refered to.

smile.gif I have had alot of fun using the exploit and the P.B.L. but after tinkering around with back-ups, homebrew and apps. I want a mod chip!! just because .....well I wanted a X2pro (LOL) I just ordered my X2 and gonna install it soon! The only thing I have to complain about for the exploit side is the B.F.M. bios's. Some of these bios's XBtool I have found can not create and you must wait for them to be released sad.gif So sometimes there is a waiting period on getting the newest bios... The other is that on a few games the bios work great with a mod chip but when there are used in a BFM format with the P.B.L. there dont seem to work? (Enter the Matrix,Crimson Skies etc.) but overall I have softmodded 6 xbox's and they work great !!! biggrin.gif my friends love it. There is no reason for me installing a mod I just always have to tinker with stuff! So if you are like me and love to tinker with stuff just get your self a mod chip if you dont always update and like to tinker with things a soft modd is fine  wink.gif

BTW the worst clock loop my friends ever had is when he lost power for 6 hours  sad.gif He let it loop overnight and it would not boot.. he brouhgt it to me and I used the "loopback cable" and it booted in 2 loops  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif
I would never worry about the clock loop if thats whats stopping some one from softmodded

Either way the exploit and the chips are awesome the xbox is the best console ever !!!
