Title: Woohoo, Xbox Fixed! Here Was My Solution

I had purchased an xbox off ebay in hopes of fixing it and reselling it. The seller said it wouldn't eject.  well they didn't tell me that it also didn't boot (no audio/video/eject flashing/solid green).

searched everywhere on what the problem could be.  Most said bad solder.  some said a LPC mod would at least make it run.  The ladder was true and the LPC did make the xbox function normal, but that wasn't good enough for me.  I tried just about everything and finally decided that either A) the TSOP needed a reflash or B ) the TSOP chip was fried.

well I finally received my homebrew modchip today, thanks to PCMERC (great guy, helped me with my email problem and didn't even have to!).  Installed in 1.5 hours, took my time (damn wires are small!).

Booted off modchip first time no problems..  turned off the mod, hit flash in evox for the original bios for the box and it detected the TSOP.  I was already so excited that I damn near pissed my jammys...  then the flash looked like it worked and the xbox turned off... crossed my fingers and turned it on..

The flash worked! the xbox is functioning as retail with no mod!

This is what worked for me... as for others I cannot be certain that all no audio/video/eject flashing/solid green problems can be fixed by flashing the TSOP with a homebrew but as I said, it did work for me!

as I sat here and wrote this.... I got done and went and turned it on...and IT DOESN"T WORK ANYMORE... son of a .... not even off the homebrew!!!   WTF!!!


I'll investigate later as I am TOO PISSED to do anything now!!!

did you take out the homebrew and then it didnt work?  You could have used a matrix or even a chameleon to reflash it ya know...(imo it would have been easier)

Sheep dip. I have a V1.0 with the same issue. Never modded never opened. Turns on green led, no eject if you remove vid cable it flashes orange as it should. Unfortunatly i dont have a solderless (or another modchip to test - I aint removing my cheapmod from my working box to test).

Could it be that the flash module is crappy and is corrupting itself. Hence how the issue occured in the first....

Can you try with the modchip in and see as that would be a valid solution - dump it into LPC mode and have it read from there.

Congrats on taking this on as MANY people have this prob. And please keep us posted on how your making out :beer: .

Ok....I might be speaking too soon again.... who knows... but as of right now, IT WORKS!....

after letting the damn thing sit there while I was mad at it for a few days...  I went back tonight to take a look at it...

it still didn't boot with either the homebrew or the TSOP....  upon closer inspection of the motherboard,  I found what might well have been the problem on this board.  There appeared to be a very teeny tiny solder connecting the last few posts on the TSOP chip itself...  now I have no idea how it got there, I am assuming it was there when I got the unit.  The only soldering I did on the top side of the board was D0 and to do that I only tinned the wire... no other solder could have touched the top of the board, at least not by me...  it was weird cus the solder almost looked like a very thin wire, not a blotch or drop like you might expect...  that's why I hadn't seen it till now...

So with some careful movements and some copper braid, I removed the solder.  Put the thing together and BOOM it boots off both the homebrew and the TSOP....

I tried multiple times...it seems to have done the trick...  So hopefully this ends my saga of the dead xbox I bought on ebay thus relieving me of lots of stress...

I will now stress test the system over the next week to ensure everything is ok...

maybe it is true about the solder on the board for a flashing green system.. again I have no idea where the solder came from or how I even got it booted with the homebrew and the TSOP once while the solder was still there, the unit looked virgin to me, it was owned by some lady...  beats me how this happened...


well I sign off happy and glad... the box is now playing an original copy of Splinter Cell booted off the TSOP....   GOOD LUCK TO ALL OUT THERE WITH THIS PROBLEM.... I guess just look for solder????

This seems to have done the trick...  The xbox is still functioning perfectly with and without the mod.  Plays games and boots to msdash.  It appears as though I've nipped this one in the butt!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You sir, have inspired me :D

Mid last year (2003) a friend of mine aquired a broken xbox. I can eject the xbox dvd, but i get no video/audio and it blinks red/green. Open the box up back then, no sighs of modifications (I'm looking for solder, now :D)

After getting bored I came back to the site to check things out, and I find tutorials for creating homebrew chips so I thought I'd get back into it and try to fix this thing..

I'm not overly experieced with this sort of things, but I am a software engineer with plenty of hardware experience (not engineering, though.. :( so I figured what the hell I'll give it a shot anyways. so here we go, wish me luck :D

PS, sorry for bringing up an old thread.. at least I actually used the "SEARCH" feature :P

So you're saying that you booted from the mod chip, and while the xbox was on, you disabled the mod chip, and loaded the stock bios? You can do that? I might have to do that.

only ones that you can do that with are non-LPC 29 wire mods. The LPC mods when booted disable the TSOP and when the mod is turned off the TSOP is still disabled.

yes A@ron is correct, only 29 wire mods will allow you to boot with the mod on, and when you switch it off, it will detect the onboard TSOP.

Hey congrats!

Persistence got you a (hopefully) cheap unit, even though you don't want to tell us the cost, I'll bet the power who asked you wanted to get an idea of how much you saved this way.
