I have to say that the xbox media player is way better than the PS2 one!!! that's the main reason i trash my ps2 out and get the xbox!!!!!!!!!!!! s...

Not absolutely sure but isn't the underlying code a heavily modified linux port from one of their open source media players?

Yes, the player is based on MPlayer, probably one of the best media players out there. There is also a Windows port of it (or was last time I checked, maybe they dumped the idea ). If a media file won't play proper on your PC, you're probably using some POS player (like Windows Media Player, has problems with everything). Possibly try BSPlayer (www.bsplayer.org) for video files, it has been one of my favorites for at least a year now.
