i tried gordian knot and i really want a all in one program to just put the dvd into the drive and ripp straight to divx.  dr divx did not rip a dvd the right way.  i tried dvd-to-avi and it does that.

I use FlasKMPEG and XMPEG(based on FlaskMPEG) among others, both are user-friendly with many options

If you want the best quality, use the Gordian Knot package (it's a collection of tools to do convert the DVD).  Other solutions provide noticeably worse results, but may be preferrable to those not wanting to learn all the aspects of video encoding.  Like said above, check out www.doom9.org; it is hands-down the most comprehensive resource on the web.

I have to agree there, goto Doom9 and check out the guides, i would use GordianKnot and also Robot4rip. Both work in harmony and guides can be found at doom9.

Another vote of Gordian Knot.  It looks complicated at first simply because it can incorporate tons of functionality but in reality I use only a few settings.  It provides much more control over video and audio quality (like for a movie you really love vs. one you don't mind having access to) and the results are better than any all in one program since GK is actually a compilation of some of the best stand-alone tools with a single interface.  I taught a friend to use it in about 5 minutes (not counting time to rip and create an AVI project).  If you are looking for quick convenience and don't want to invest any time whatsoever than another solution may be more appropriate but if you really want to do it right spending a little bit of time with GK and the tutorials will set you up perfectly.

Another point - I watch my divx on a large screen in 480p so quality is far more important when blowing a picture up that large - if you have a similar setup or plan to use these rips in a larger screen HDTV setting in the future you should take the time to do it right now since you will be mightily disappointed when you find out your good quality rip looks horrible when you move from a smaller standard tv to a large screen setup.

Gordian Knot cannot be beaten.
Just read the guides, overwhelming at first but very easy once you have done a few.

Yes, but it is not a real big effort.

You might wanna checkout fairuse.  Its a dvd to divx (and now xvid too) wizard-like app.  Haven't checked out the latest versions, but you might have to do audio seperatly and thats it. It'll rip/crop/resize/encode video in a few clicks only.

Good luck

Dude,

go to doom9.org and download gordian knot.

Run the program.

It provides instructions on how to rip and make a dvd2avi session file.  Tutorials step you through it.

I read and learned straight from the tutorials.  You can too.

I think an all-in-one solution is what you are looking for.  GK has tutorials just like xboxscene but as with all tutorials you have to be willing to read them and apply yourself.  If you have a specific question, feel free to ask but there is no way anyone is going to spoon feed an entire tutorial's worth of information.

DVD shrink rips the DVD to your harddrive, and it is incredibly fast (30 minutes for full movie).

After that you can use the DVDx app that comes with Xcopy to convert to any number of formats. This process takes a little longer depending compression, processors speed etc.

I will let u know when i need help reading a tutorial. i don't need someone to tell me that crap about reading anything. so is you don't have anything constructive to say or helpful, then don't say nothing.

You had said you had problems with GK but the other one worked.  Kind of vague so I incorrectly assumed you hadn't been through the tutorials since it's usually pretty straightforward except that they rip in PAL in the tut so their explanation for Force Film and removing interlacing in non-film sources is a little off IMO.  If you have a question feel free to ask - you can tell from this thread that there's a lot of people who use this software here.  If the alternative software is working and good enough that you don't want to bother any more with GK that's okay too.
