Title: Msft Copies Xbmp
Post by: X-ace on October 02, 2003, 06:24:00 AM
MSFT just launched their media center 2004. Interesting by itself, but see how much the start page resembles XBMP's default page:

C|net review of the media center.

(OK, I'll admit to not knowing what MSFT's previous version looked like, and so there is potential for inspiration to go the other way. My initial response was to credit the XBMP team though.)

I'm inclined to think XBMP's look was based on this MS product.  If you watch the demo video the menus work the same (except with animations), and the mp3 player and how the icons are set up are exactly the same.  It's can't be just coincidence.

I'm inclined to believe MS ripped off of XBMP.

I saw Media Center screenies long before XBMP took on that UI.  I don't have any disrespect for Team XBMP for adopting that look; in fact, I like that they went to such an extent to emulate the Media Center feel.

Exactly? Wasn't that the whole goal of xbmp?

"To make a media player that is just as good, if not better, than something that MS$ would actually release for the xbox". Basically they were going to build an MS$ like program, that does more than MS$ would ever allow!

Right.  My point was that MS didn't rip them off, they "ripped off" MS; but I tried to say it in such a way as to convey that I like what they did.

Think about how many more people would own an xbox if it came with the functionality of xbmp and could output in progressive scan for dvd and all media.  People would pay 3-400 easily for that functionality.  Of course, the one's most interested are those with large media libraries and quite often they aren't all 100% legal.  Still it would make it a far more impressive machine.

We all like what they did  biggrin.gif ... This is by far the most functional/useful app for the xbox.  beerchug.gif

And the fact that it could fool just about anybody into believing it was actual MS$ code: Priceless  wink.gif

me i tried to keep my xbox as close as possible to the MS theme when modding so i REALLY like that xbmp follows the media center theme
