Just got the XIR remote easy edition. Fitted it and it works a treat. It was easy to fit even though the web instructions are a bit rubbish. On the website it mentioned a purple and orange wire I think whereas mine was green and white. Made it a bit more tricky but I assumed the green wire was the dark one and it was fine.

As I watch media player downstairs it is a great help not having to go upstairs to switch the xbox on. Highly recommended.

Or do the controller on/off mod.

fast description follows:

Solder in a springloaded button in the controller. (solder to ground and the yellow wire conector)

In the xbox solder a wire from + on the powerswitch to the yellow wire and you are set...

Mod cost: 1$ and that includes wires and solder.

Works like a charm smile.gif

The xbox dongle is an RCA, try RCA/GE/THOMPSON codes.

Also the XIR remote is awesome. Well worth the $20 and easy to put in.

The Xir remote is starting to look good to me.  Everytime I turn my box off with the remote (evox/xbmp) I am always thinking of how much cooler it would be not to have to turn it on physically.  Think I'm going to send some funds.

Any recommendations as to the pro or easy?  From what I read on the function list they both seem to be able to turn the chip on/off (albiet soldering required for each).  Is this true and has anyone used this functionality?

The code is 0525.  As far as which, for 2$ more the easy kit is the shiznit.  I dont know how i went without this thing.  My house is big and now i can drink coffee in the kitchen and turn on the box in the Florida room.  You turn it off by pressing 0 and you can turn your chip (lpc) on and off by pressing select. Now ive done the dongle mod so now i have total remote functionality with no dongle and on/off features.  Damn the xbox scene rox.     beerchug.gif

sorry, this is what i have done pretty much.  Put the dvd dongle "IR eye" into my case, and the XIR mod from Green Giant and SquareL.  This is how you hard wire it.

on a sidenote i believe MICR0S0FT were going to release the remote with diffrent firmware that would turn the box on and off using the display button

i opened up the remote and on the pcb where the display button is it says PWR

Do what I do....get a pool stick and poke the on and off button....its saves energy from getting up.....for now....maybe later some genuis will come up with a solution in the program itself to actually turn it on and off without hardware modification.

Sounds interesting, but if this thing remaps "0" and "Select" on the remote, what happens when you actually need to use those buttons?

Anybody?

yeah good question !!!

The XBox DVD remote actually turns my RCA DVD player on and off using the Display button, so that's probably why the PCB says PWR.

ya, all it is, is an RCA remote for xbox.  You can find an RCA remote at Kmart with the exact same buttons and same exact same shape.

You should read the doorbell tutorial.  It's much simpler and cheaper.

Some applications might use 0 (like the TV Guide) and that could be really irritating. A good solution would be to still use 0 but you have to hold it down for say 3 sec. That would be safer as well as you wouldn't turn it off by mistake.

I believe there are issues with this solution.  In the IR world there are so many variables in signal reception that it is impossible to determine a hold vs. a press.  They looked into it before.
