This seems to be the only way alot of people can get XBMP to see the shares. It works really well on my end and takes up hardly any CPU usage so unless you're set on using Samba, give CCXstream a try.

When I was messing with Samba on Linux and XBMP I had to change from the default Samba security mode of user to share to get it to work.
I looked at my iBook's /etc/smb.conf file and the security setting is not there so Samba defaults to user mode.
Make the addition above to the /etc/smb.conf file and restart samba (or reboot if you don't know how to restart samba).
See if that helps you.
I would recommend ccxstream though as it is much faster and uses less cpu time. You also don't have to worry about changing Samba settings. If you have Samba shares on your machine and switch to share mode you will make it easier for others to access your files (assuming you are not running behind a firewall).

I tried a video too, but it was unwatchable. Just stuttered the whole time. Any tips?
it was encoded as a WM9 file from Cleaner. I think the streaming speed is the factor. Is there any way to control the ammount which XBMP caches before playback? And if so, are there any graphical representations of the caching?

I think the fact that it is a WM9 file has something to do with the stuttering. I've streamed tons of DivX files(some as large as 650mb) from my aging G4/350 and they play flawlessly. However, the Halo 2 WM9 trailer stutters like crazy. I'm gonna try putting it on the local XBox HD to see if it's just a matter of cache or something along those lines.
