Title: XBMP 2.4 Poll
Post by: SumDumGuy on February 24, 2003, 01:02:00 PM
Definitely Bug Fixes!!! XBMP is the GREAT!!! In fact I would not buy an XboX until I found out about XBMP. As soon as I saw it work, I got an XboX!!! New features are nice and all but I want to use XBMP as a serious user... Not a beta testing, constantly monkeying around, installing every new version in hopes of a fix kinda user... I think as is, it is the absolute best thing to happen to the xbox but I just want it to work like it should... in particular the smb and playlists...

Edit: edit comment about documentation. Just noticed there was new documentation out there... step in the right direction but could still use some improvments... But it is better...

Note to the Developers: You guys rock!!! Keep up the great work!!! Just checked currently the #2 most active project on sourceforge!!! I haven't done it just yet, but sometime this week I am going to make a paypal donation to your work... Keep it up... And Thanks!!!

Personally I would rather have more features then Bug Fixes. Their is always Bugs in Points and CVS Builds. You can fix the Bugs after the Point. smile.gif

MP3 Visualizations would be the best though.

PM? hehehe wink.gif Just givin ya a hard time... If I were good enough to debug their work then I might try to fix my problems but I have too much going on to even think about trying to debug someone elses code... biggrin.gif

I do. I use it to play mp3's on the entertainment center rather than my crappy computer speakers. I don't waste my xbox drive space by loading the mp3s on there, I play them over the network... I just need to get this playlist over smb bug worked out for it to be really useful to me...

I also watch and show family/friends our home videos and photo collections that are on my computer.

Occasionally watch a movie that I downloaded.

I kinda view this as a viable media center... (less the pvr). Media Center was a good idea but a poor implementation. It's just not practicle for the average family use... They should have made media center a set top box... anyway, This is like the best of all worlds.. My son gets a cool console and I get a better media center... (now if you have to push for new features instead of bug fixes... lets talk pvr on the xbox wink.gif wink.gif wink.gif heheh

I'd rather have the mp3 visualizations first, even tho it'll be buggy like hell smile.gif   THE must have feature for me.   Bug fixes can always come later wink.gif

We XBMP addicts can always download more cvs builds to get the bug'fixes'  tongue.gif

Tweak the controller controls layout for playback functions, for the love of god! XBMP is fabulous but this is still an issue! It would be so great to, for example, FFW or REW without using the damn Windows Media player interface and scrollbar!

an other example: FFW and REW during an MP3 playback is nearly impossible, it just goes way too fast

Well I said bug fixes. However, I do know that bugs are always being worked on and so is adding more features. I would like to see a good audio visualization, more files supported (Realmedia, Quicktime), and USB drive support. And maybe whoever does the CVS builds should do one with out all that network and apps stuff for those of us who don't want our computers pluged in to the xbox all the time and don't want XBMP as a dash replacement. Well the network stuff I can remove my self, but the apps I can't. And I think the USB drrive support should be pretty easy since XBMP is already loading all the drivers and codecs for the media files why not add one for USB support, so I can transfer (or watch) files easier.

there are some problem with the image when you encode the movie with the Pro features on Divx5.02, and i know that becausa movies encoded without the pro features wont show the blocks that are shown from time to time. The blocks are color blcoks but the colors are like the colors in the playing scene, it is like an small section would freeze and then play and again freeze again.... It doesnt happen all the time but it does bother...

and i dont know if this is due to XBMP but after watching part of a movie or the whole movie when you go to the main menu to boot up the xbox not all the options are shown in the menu.. EX: after booting i dont see the systen utilities or the launch menu option... and the skin i am using goes to default instead of the one i have set...

just letting you know smile.gif

I don't have any problems with the movies I encoded with the Pro features.

config.xml updated w/ "scrollysuffix" tag. This is the seperator to
indicate the break for the end/beginning of hte filename. XBMS fixes.
The FTP server FINALLY supports going to root dir! Use its new FileZilla
Server.xml file to make this happen. Skin.xml was updated with a few
changes. Lang-1.xml updated with MANY tuples for OSD. This CVS also
includes an update from MomDad to say "Programs" instead of
"Applications" when on that particular screen. CHANGELOG.TXT updated.

Lastly, one more bit of excellent news. There has been some progress in
acheiving audio visualization in XBMP. A developer (kris) has apparently
ported a visualization library (goom) it to the Xbox. However, it has
_NOT_ been implimented into XBMP yet. For more info/screenshots on Goom,
their homepage is is http://ios.free.fr/?page=projet&quoi=1 .

This was taken from the latest (24th) cvs release of xbmp!so this means not long till we see audio graphics and stuff like that so you better knock that off the poll as it IS coming

I have an idea that is better than a simple Poll!!!! Have the XBMP dev team setup their paypal donations so that when you make a donation the dollar value of that donation can be applied to a poll item... Then at a predetermined time they stop and look at the current results... which ever poll item had the highest dollar value that is what the developers focus on!!! Then they reset the results all back to 0 and the poll starts again!!! That way people willing to financially back the team are the ones that they are listening too...

Just an idea...

Think I might send that one directly to the dev team...

If only I could just play Geiss visualizations life would be so much sweeter! Kidding aside eye candy is a nice feature. Already I have to hand it to the XBMP team that your release rocks! Playing music and movies from stream is just the coolest feature on the box, period. Any new features or enhancements are appreciated!

On another note I found XBMP so cool that I'm replacing the Alpine DVD setup in my truck with an XBOX. Now how bout a touchscreen controller to work in the usb ports, lol!!!

Title: XBMP 2.4 Poll
Post by: SumDumGuy on March 03, 2003, 08:44:00 AM
So much for the Poll aye???? Looks like 50% of voters felt that Bug fixes were most important... What is the XBMP team focusing on? sounds like visualizations? Don't get me wrong, I think they are great... think they are doing a great job... hope they keep up the good work... But also think that if they don't want to know then they shouldnt ask???

I understand... Fixing bugs stinks... It is tedious, time consuming, its no fun and who gets praises for fixing bugs??? If you add a cool new feature everyone will be saying "SoandSo Added this NEW Feature!!!!!! So thank SoandSo for their hard work..." and you become a hero and blah blah blah... while the person focusing on bugs fixes some bugs and they say... "oh btw, that annoying bug has been fixed... Oh and SoandSo is working on another NEW Feature!!!!". Result? Everyone wants to be like SoandSo... forget the bugs, add some cool new feature, its more fun to code, its more rewarding to see a new feature than to see an old feature (work correctly), and all of the vocalized appreciation tends to be focused on the new features and not on the bug fixes...

I like new features too... I just think they should listen to the voice of the voters... People voted and debugging beat out visualizations 2 to 1... take a minute... stomp out all the bugs... get a really stable release with the current features... Then those of us who just really want a solid usable mp can have that and you can move on to new features and as you release newer versions just stop every so often to stamp out a new stable release... goto a beta/stable release system like many other dev shops... One is a stable version, the other verison is a feature rich beta version... as a beta version matures move it to stable then create a new beta with new features that are not yet stable... people have a choice... a few features behind and stable or bleeding edge and buggy...

Just my $.02

bug fixes seem like a good idea, i do get quite a bit of freezing, it has to do with browsing different sections while listening to music, or movies. Im  not sure ill see if i can figure out what triggers the freeze....what i really want is visuals, especially if we can use the winamp ones, and be able to download em without using the comp, that would be uber l33t

I'd REALLY like to see "auto-run" on insert.

A VCD should just play when you insert it, likewise, DVD, SVCD, MPEG and DivX.... heck, even MP3 collections and image collections should just crank up, once inserted.

Also, it shouldn't matter if the disc is UDF, XDFS, or ISO9660. XBMP should ignore the differences, as far as the user is concerned.

I happen to disagree with you on that one. Have you ever seen a Dvd scaled up to 1080i?? I
have and it looks DAMN good. In fact it smokes that same DVD at 480p. I am currently running

I would kind of like to have ripping capabilities in XBMP, such as mp3 or ogg ripping. So then i could put an audio CD in the DVD tray and store it straight on the HDD in a selected format. Similar to the WMA ripping in the M$ dash except choosing which format you would like. DVD ripping would also be schweet but i know how difficult that can be.
Thanks XBMP team and keep up the good work.

A few things I'd like to see:

1. To be able to seek with the analog stick (either) so that you can have variable FF/REW.
2. To use the controller/remote for all play controll. (Like DVDx where you don't have to pull up the little sub-menu on the bottom left)
3. When using thumbnails for mp3s and other audio (with no video), have XBMP display the thumbnail in full screen.
4. Audio visualization would rock.
5. Ripping capabilities.

Just my input...

XBMP is the best software for the X-box, commercial or free.

What I would like to see...

Make the FTP stuff easy to config so I can get it to work. No need for encrypted passwords.

Also autolaunch DIVX, DVD- movies, whatever is in the DVD-drive.... so the missus can just put a movie in and switch the xbox ON.

Allow for different visualisations for the MP3 screen savers, even to read in winamp one maybe?

More IMDB info so users can see

get the xbox to produce popcorn when an intermission break in a film is made.

What I would like to see is config.xml configurability within xbmp itself, perhaps under the "Settings" tab.

It's a pain in the arse having to configure it (even with XBMPed) on my PC every time I want to install a new CVS build.

Failing this, some sort of text editor within XBMP would be nice (I know that they've reportedly stopped working on new features, but hey, I can still ask!) so that you could configure any config file (evox.ini for example)

Oh yeah, and bring back drive browsing functions so I don't have to specifiy a drive/location for every type of media (in XBMP when browsing, you press B to go back/up a level and A to access a folder).  This used to be standard in XBMP 2.1, but the features has been lost somewhere along the line.  It was quite handy is all.

Just small things, but that's what I would like to see please.

And I agree 100% with all those who think that XBMP is by far the greates piece of xbox software on the planet.  I take my metaphorical hat off to all those who worked on it.  You are all gods amongst men.

Cheers,

-Steve.

I have only 1 Mp3 on it, and that was just to have it load the directory i pointed it to. I have a better MP3 player then the Xbox. It is meant to hook upto a home entertainment system. Its a Terratec M3PO. It takes a Hard Drive, and it also takes CDs. I can copy the Music from the CD onto the Hard Drive, or just dump it on the Hard Drive by putting it in hte Computer. Its currently got an old 5200rpm 20gig which is brilliant.

Here it is

Although, my box was different, but those are the features of it, its alot more convenient for me then using hte xobx (its got a display thing on it, and needs no Tv)

But Still, the Xbox rules for its media capabilities. Before i got that thing, i used to use my Xbox for MP3s. BUt i still store all my Xvid/DivX movies on it, i cant watch VCDs on CDR because of my Drive (Thompson)
