My first HDD was a 120GB, but i changed that for a 160GB as i ran out of room for my games. But like you i hardly play some of the games, hell others ive never played. I think a 40GB HDD would be about perfect for me, but i cant bring myself to do it, i have to store the games, even though i dont touch most of them |
im the same way, every month i got o EB and buy liek 5 games that are real checp, whhether ive heard of them or not, lol
i cant bring myself to get rid of any games, even ones ive played and i hate (ever hear of robin hood: defender of the crown?)
oh yeah, 160gb here, looking for a cheap 250 though
(4) 120's and (1) 160.
None of them have over 90GB used up yet.
I've got a 120, but I only have 1.2 GB left
Last night I going though my list to see what I wanted to delete to get Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance II installed, and I had one helluva time trying to figure out what I didn't want. I'll delete the single-player only games after I've beat them, but most of the games I have are multiplayer, to it gets kinda hard to decide if i want to delete them, even if they're aren't that good (godzilla sucks on single player, but destroying cities while beating up your friends is just plain FUN!)
lotsof those single player games i'm about halfway through, and i'll finish them SOMEDAY, i'm sure.....
yeah, right!
(i say this as i am playing halo through the single player campaign for the gazillionth time)
120 and i think ill be needing to get a new one VERY Soon i got like 40 left and ive had it for like 3 months. woops
stock
120 gigs and i couldn't imagine being able to use more. besides that's twice what i have on my pc
i got a 120gigs got 30 gigs left had it less than a month
120 Gb, and now full due to my inability to stick to one game at a time and finish it!
Also my laptop has only 30Gb, so I use my Xbox drive as a storage area for mp3s and vid clips.
You can never have too much space IMHO.
When I first modded my Xbox I had a 120 before the night was over I had 39 games on the Xbox with like 30GB left to spare, I know that Ill never play all the games but Im what you call a game whore I want all the games I can get even if they suck
same thing with music I have over 120GB of music on my computer which I havent even lessoned to close to half of it yet knowing more than half of it is going to suck. Anyways I just installed a WD 250GB and I have 160GB left which I plan to fill, once thats filled Im thinking about getting a 320GB, just think all the games you can have with that kind of size of a hard drive!
My WD 250GB is really quiet...

Think I will buy a 200+ soon.
i think we need to redo this poll, lol

Still have the 200? Wanna get rid of it?
When I originally upgraded my HDD, it was a WD 100Gb as the price difference between it and a 120Gb was too great to justify the extra 20Gb's.
I then upgraded to a 120Gb drive about 6 months ago as I got one at a steal and used the 100Gb in the PC.
Now I'm getting a 250Gb this week and selling the 120 to a friend.
It's not only for games though. I have heaps of emulator/movies, etc that take up a heap of space.
On my everday xbox I use a 12o but on my "system link only" xbox I"m gonna install a 40 or 60.

after about 250gb maybe alittle less
the data gets corrupted and can't be found so 250 is about the biggest workable HD for an xbox
you could always hook up 4 250gbs and get a terabyte tho
I bought myself a 120, I don't think I'll be able to fill it any time soon. Funny cause its bigger than my main computers HDD (80gb).

250GB here.
First was 10GB MS
Second 120GB Maxtor
Third 250GB WD
Getting another Xbox now going to drop another X2 2.3b Pro in with 320GB...going to call it the Movie Machine. (Nothing but DVD's are going on it)
anyone seen a significant difference with 2MB vs 8MB CACHE drives?
i got a 80 GB becouse they had a sale at the time (80GB for $49.99)
Hi
My first modded Hdd was a Seagate 120
But since progressing to having 4 xboxes in the house now I have added x3
300gig maxtors to them with the old 120 still in service in my workshop for test purposes.

Hey guys,
Im reading all this and it seems you can use any size HD? I see reference that you can only use up to a 137GB drive? Is this untrue? I have a v1.3 XBOX and will be putting in a new XBIT this week. I would like to put in a 250GB (but had thought I could only use a 120GB due to the limitations). Will this work? And any good ref sites to make sure to get a drive that works well?
Thanks
/t
You can use any size hard drive, you will just have to reconfigure some files to run a hard drive larger than 137gb. Not that hard and you can use your 250gb hard drive as a 137gb until you figure out how to access the extra space. As for the best brand, there are several lists on this forum, "lockability" will determine whether you can play on MSLive or not, but even if a drive isn't lockable, you can use it with a hacked dash.
all you need is a bios that support >137gigs, i believe you can put up to 2.1 terrabytes or something in em now with updated bios
I'm still using the WD 8gb hard drive that came with the xbox.I have 2 games on it and some apps with some room left over but i am in need of a bigger HD.
Plz do poll
I assume you mean 80-->119, 120-->159 etc.
It isn't clear where, for example, a 160GB fits with your current ranges.

Wasn't there a poll on this a week or two ago? Anyways, I have a 160GB Maxtor Ultra ATA 133. It's a pretty sweet drive.
man i just got a job so i'm gonna be doing alot of modding
hmm starting with usb or lights
desicions desicions...........
*200GB, 120GB, 120GB, 250GB
200Gb, well, as soon as this modchip is in anyway.... its a shame that my Xbox is going to have a HDD that is 20x bigger than the one in my PC.
I have a 160 gb right now, in a couple of weeks im putting the 160 gb in my pc and putting the one in my PC (80gb) in my xbox.. this is because I barely use any of it and i'm not sure if anyone else does this but.. if you beat a game or get bored of it, why dont you just ftp the game to your pc and save it to a folder, make sure you dont delete it... so you can store all your games that you don't play, or beat on your PC.. if there's ever a time that you want to play the game that you stored on your pc, just ftp it back to your xbox! (i'm sure a lot of people do this). My suggestion to people browsing this topic that are not sure of what size HDD to get, it's simple. If you have a lot of music, vdeos, or pictures, and of corse, games, and whatever else, get a large HDD (120-300gb). Or if you just want your games on the HDD i reccomend getting between 60-100gb, and do my method to store the games on your pc.. I forgot to mention, just to make sure that the games you have stored on you PC are safe, you can burn them to a cd-r!!
Good Luck!
120 GB with just over 65 GB left

I have an 80 gig HD (1/2 full)
I was wondering if you can store the games you don't feel like playing

With transfering them back and forth effect anything?

You sure can. I would use quix to make a iso for easy storage.
I just upgraded my box to a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 Plus 200 GB. It's an excellent drive; fast, quiet, cool-running and inexpensive (about $150 USD).
I use F for games that I will keep permanently (to avoid fragmentation) and G for music, movies, and games that I might not keep. That way I can easily reformat G when it gets fragmented without re-transferring up 129GB worth of games, along with the other up to 70 GB music and movies.
The Xenium made my HD swap totally painless.
Now do you really need all of that? Must be a porno-fanatic.
I've got a 250 gig Western Digital. I got alotta room to work with.

Just ordered my X2.3b lite and a 200GB HDD and the Star Wars bundle. I already have 90GB's worth of stuff waiting to get on that 200GB Seagate. Ah, a semi-portable multimedia jukebox will be so awesome.
Is there a good tutorial for setting up partitions?
320 GB (Maxtor).
It's my third Xbox, the first modded though. I figured that it'd be nice to have a backup of all the games, media and stuff at one place - my xbox.

I should probably mention I do keep my backups on my computers HDD until I feel I dont really need them. I could see how a big HDD could be very handy and I'm not trying to rant, rather supporting my own ideas
, I make backup copies on DVD of my games, even though they're also on the hard drive. The hard drive might 1-day crash & i could loose all those games, saves, videos etc.. So it's good 2 have a hard copy on DVD. I have a 120GB in my box & use it mostly for the newer games. I play, test, then burn them.
U can learn something from everybody

i have a 160 had it for a couple months and have like 80gigs left

4 320gb drives
2 120gb drives

I filled up a 120 pretty quick with DIVX stuff, the only game i had on there - morrowind was because it loads a LOT faster off the hdd!

Depends on the size of the games really. A game like the shitty Malice is about 750 MB. while 007 Everything or Nothing is around 3 GB. Just wait til the DVD9 discs come out and you'll be using a whole lot more space.
| QUOTE (grimlock @ Jul 26 2004, 11:04 PM) |
Some simple considerations would be: 1. Space: Where will you fit the disks? 2. Temp: It's gonna get awfully hot in there. 3. Mode of operation: Normally IDE disks are not hot-swappable. Turning them on/off on the fly is not generally recommended. Also, if the switch is not noise-free, you run the risk of damaging your disks and/or controller.
Of course, all the above do not apply if you plan to switch the disks while the xbox is turned off
PS. Anyway, since I had already voted some time ago with my stock disk, thought I'd mention I now have a 200Gb WD200JB installed. |

how do yall have less then 200gb?? i want a 250, 300...but i put all my movies and game Backups on it and music...and like everything...but wow i couldnt live with less...
sorry guys, was doing a search about harddrives and found this. kinda like what i'm looking for.
just got my modchip, now looking at installing the harddrive. trying to pick which one/size to use, or use multiples. just need to know the size of the average backup. i havent been able to do any yet as i just installed the chip 2 days ago. just dont wanna buy too small or too big.
40 in the xbox... only got it cause it was free... just now surpassed the 40 gigs of games mark. but i'm able to remove alot of files from the cd folders (demos) and fit it all on there. i keep all the full games on my pc hard drive which is a 250. i want to get a new one for it, and my freind has 2 200gb drives that i might be able to steal from him, as his computer never works right and is always dying and giving him problems.
i have 50 gigs of mp3s and and 35 some odd divx movies, and they just dont have room... all legal of course. easier to tote around on the HD rather than all the damn cds and dvds
Got a 250gb just put in, filled my 120gb way too easy
Where would one acquire terabyte drives? I can only find up to 300 gb drives.
Just out of curiosity....how can you people afford this!!! Haha I have a 160GB in my Xbox, and the only reason I do is because it was on sale for 75 bucks. I always read of people changing Xbox hard drives 2 or 3 times and I'm just amazed.
mine is just about 8 inches
i got a 120 GB being shipped right now. hope its big enough. shuold be....

80 gigs. I have 250 in my PC where I store games that I beat/probably won't play d= I just like to keep a healthy amount of games around for variety.
250 gigs, and I dont think I'll ever use all of it. Still Have 140 gigs left.
I just got a 250GB HDD, but I don't think I'm going to fill it anytime soon. I just got it because it was pretty cheap for a 250 ($119 at Fry's, with no rebate)
lookie my sig lol and it was cheeppppp
one box has my 120gb,used to be PACKED, but it's starting to get cleared up (50% now?), the other 2 are stocks, but both have sammys, so i just back up any games off of the 120gb, then play them in the other 2 xboxes, so it's great for lans, plus the way my house is set up, we got cat5's to all 4 tvs spread through the house, all going to my 8port router, then i just use xtoolbox to ftp between xboxes
I have a 250 gb drive in mine. It is already filled up. Unfortunatly the larger drives are just way to expensive. I only wish there was some way to set up a raid configuration.
Ive had an 80 GB installed since Feb '04 and ive never had less than 30 GB available. Games I dont play I just delete, and I go through my roms and delete all the ones i dont/wont play.
yeah, its pretty sad, i have more gigs on my xbox (160) than on my pc (100)
but then again, i have 3 drives in my pc, (including my old xbox seagate for my windows 2000 drive, works great)
but 160 gigs and im picky about what i put on it... all the classics of course, not that xbox has that many...
and the games i havent gotten around to beating..
or course, the GTA's...thief,halo, some system link games... and i got about 60 gigs left over for new stuff, not to mention i got lots of shit i wouldnt mind deleting.
also i have a text file right under my "xbox games" on my unbleashX dash i have a text file with all the games not on the hard drive, so i can just look at that to see whats missing and decide if i want to play it... yes, im that lazy.
160 gigs for 50 bucks too, i couldnt pass it up... now i just gotta get that damn rebate for it.
I WANT TO PUT A NEW DRIVE IN MY XBOX, HOW MANY GAMES CAN I PUT ONA 40 GIG DRIVE
Depends. games vary in size from less then a gig to over 6 gigs.
I have a 250 gig WD right now, should last me a while.
I rock a WD 120GB HD. It was the best drive for the right price over a year ago. I want to move up but the prices for the 200 and 250 are too high right now. I need the extra space for movies. My drive is filled right now but I have some Ridata+RWs to take care of the problem. The XBOX is such a great machine due to the scene and the apps.
250 maxtor (but im only getting 137 gigs out of it) anyone have a solution as to how i can get the rest of my space out of g:?
update your bios to one that supports +137 gigs
usually end in .67
I just got a 160 for like 60 bucks, got that in there now, might switch it with the 80 in my computer though. I don't put much stuff on mine (music, movies, a handful of games) so it should last me the better part of a while.
