Title: Hdd Unlock Without Xbox
Post by: iceuk on February 16, 2004, 02:22:00 PM
A Qucik Tutorial on how to unlock your XBOX HDD without the eeprom data & password

I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED TO YOUR HARDWARE!!

Stuff Required :

Live Info Beta 2  (team Assembly)
hdunlock.exe
hddisable.exe
Windows boot disk
Locked hdd

Step 1

With your pc turned off plug the power into the locked hdd (not ide cable)
Turn your pc on and boot into windows
Plug the ide cable into the locked hdd (VERY CAREFULLY)
Go to device manager and search for new hardware
The locked hdd should show up after searching finishs (will not show up in my computer)
Start live info beta 2, you will see some eeprom stuff (ignore it) you need to click on the ide device drop down list in the hdd info section (if the list doesn't work click on it then use the arrow key)
In the calculated password box you should now see a password made up of letters and numbers (40 approx)
Make a note of these numbers on paper and double check them.
Now you need to turn off your pc.

Step 2

Remove the ide cable from the locked drive (not Power)
Boot into DOS using your windows boot disc
Plug the ide cable back into the locked hdd (CAREFULLY)
Now you need to execute hdunlock.exe
The first option is to choose your hdd (Press the coresponding number)
Next option is enter the password (the one you wrote down)
It should now say done!.
Start hddisable.exe (you need this to make sure your drive will not lock again on reboot!)
The first option is to choose your hdd (Press the coresponding number)
Next option is enter the password (the one you wrote down)
It should now say done!.

Step 3

Reboot your pc.
It should now boot up into windows without asking for a password.
If it doesnt you have done something wrong!!!
If you are now in window your drive has been successfully unlocked.
REMEMBER YOUR DRIVE WILL NOT SHOW UP IN MY COMPUTER UNTIL IT IS FORMATTED.

Hmm.... Maybe next time you will backup all your data from your xbox (including the EEPROM)!

If you encounter any problems with this tut let me know!

Happy Unlocking  :D

Hi there.

Have you tested this?. It's well known that when you don't have an eeprom backup and u have a locked HDD you are screwed.

I test the little proggie (with my non-locked PC drives) and what I see is that the HDD password is different every time I load a different eeprom.

The password that liveInfo Beta 2 is giving us for a given HDD is the one that HDD is meant to have with NO eeprom data (or blank data). And I'm afraid it won't be the same as the one that HDD is currently locked with.

Sorry about my english.. but I think I make myself clear.

Just my two cents... but if this method does indeed work, you've make lots of people happy then.

See ya.

you don't need any eeprom data to do this!!

That eeprom part of the program is not used in the unlocking procedure!

leave that section alone i changed nothing and it worked for me

I have unlocked 2 retail seagate drives, 4 maxtor retail drives and a 80gb maxtor 7200rpm drive.

ALL WERE 100% SUCCESSFUL

I will post the result's as soon as i have had a go at unlocking it.

All i can say is that this proccess has worked for me everytime!

p.s my operating system is win2000 sp4

i tried the same trick with a Seagate xbox hd and no result. I can read the calculated password in Liveinfo. When i use HDDISABLE with that password in says: "device not ready"

i'm have XP. Would it have something to do with the OS you're running.

so you are confirming it worked then?

The 80G Maxtor may not have been locked, or, if it was, since it wasn't an Xbox original HD, the master security password was unchanged. M$ changes the master passwords on the XBOX original drives, so the calculated passwords and original manufacturer passwords don't work. Consequently the software provided passwords won't work either. They (M$) use Maximum Security mode to the hilt.

Iceuk, I am not saying your method doesn't work, I'm just saying it doesn't work everytime for everybody, so that makes it useless, essentially. But hey, if it works for you, then you can make some $$$ unlocking drives for folks.

Right..

Tried some unlocks of retail on 2 other pc's running windows 2000

hmm.. they would'nt unlock

Tried 3 bigger drives (80gb maxtor, 120gb seagate, wd 40gb)

They all unlocked successfully!!!!!

i have now made a full image of my magic windows 2000 machine what unlocked the retail drives!!

It looks to me now that this method will only unlock non original xbox hhd's on most peoples machines

keep posting, let me know how it goes

believe me i will NOT give up!

If you can do that, you can dump the eeprom data to unlock the HDD with ur PC or unlock swaping the eeprom with another Xbox... but that´s something we already know.

Let's see if we can find out if this method works, or the key for it to work.

so u have got the rom dump from your xbox that drive came out of?

you can boot a config magic cd and dump that backup on to the rom and unlock it..

you can also read the eeprom bin file which is on your pc to get the password.

Not really sure what your saying!! ... had a lot to drink!!!

Anyway.....

Good News..... ish!!
I spoke to some Linux programmers the other night about drive unlocking..

I told them the situation with the xbox and stuff..

They now have 3 retail xbox hdd's (had to travel 80 miles) and they are very sure they can build a prog to do the job..

The app will be built around the linux os.. ( wont make windows app.. they hate m$)..

so i will keep you updated..

Hey ICE - question for you. My kids just broke my XBox this past weekend and I think the drive is still intact (spins with power) - However the XBox is dead and wont boot. I bought another XBox and well the old drive was locked since the play XBL. So I am reading this tut and it looks like I am in the same boat. If I go through these steps and unlock it will I lose my data? If so then why not just put the drive in your PC and format it anyway? Or is it because you locked it your PC cant format it either. Please tell me I am not going to be SOL.

how broken is your xbox?..

you can have ago at unlocking it above but seeing some of the reports i doubt it will work...

You will not lose any of the data on it tho..

But...

if your in the uk you can send me the eeprom off the board and i will be able to get the key for you (if it is still intact!!)

Its bad - motherboard is crack - just the eprom and of course there is a chip out of it so I am sure its damaged. So is there anyway to unlock this drive then put it in the new box? I saw you said that some of the retail drive have issues but this is an WD 200G one. Those are iffy too?

Using this method I have unlocked a non-retail drive, when I had locked it with avalaunch's old (bogus) hard drive locking utility.
However, other people I tell this method to say that it doesn't work... I don't know if it's only non-retail drives or what.
It seems like the best one can do is brute-force the password, but that would take a while.

If the drive was locked with config magic, and the master password is teamassembly, then try atapwd to unlock it with the master password.   The xbox uses the user password, and that is derived from data on the eeprom as well as the model/serial of the HDD.  I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see how liveinfo could work with out selecting an eeprom.bin.  Also I assume that live info would only return the original user password that was originally on the drive.  There is a very in depth article on the xbox-linux sourceforge site  (More than one actually)
Anyways, hdlock/hdunlock/hddisabl use 20 byte key.  Xbox/atapwd use 16 byte key

I too have had this problem, my old modded xbox will not boot at all (it does the turn on and off 3 times thing with the mod chip out) and I locked the hard drive on there. I've tried following these instructions above. When I use a boot disk to go to dos and run hdunlock, type in the password that liveinfo gave me (the 40-digit number) and it says done. I've realized that any code you put in will say done.

I locked it with ConfigMagic FINAL (this is my 120g WD Hard drive), and I know their default password is TEAMASSEMBLY, but what does that do and/or is used for? When I try to run the hddisable program (or hdlock), type in the same long string, it tells me that it doesn't work. Are others having these same problems? Just to make sure we're all on the same page here, I want to unlock this hard drive because my new modded xbox can't boot to it because it was locked on my other machine.

Some other things I have tried:

I have that Unlockx program as well, but that doesn't unlock when I put the code in.

I've tried the Hot Swap thing with ConfigMagic FINAL and it was unable to unlock it.

I really should have never locked it in the first place, and I really should have written down that long password.

I am willing to offer the person who can tell me exactly what needs to be done (or even link to a page that explains it) $5 USD (via paypal or whatever) if I get my hard drive working again.

Thanks to everyone who takes the time to help people like me out.

Go to the downloads section on the main page www.xbox-scene.com and search for atapwd.exe and then use TEAMASSEMBLY as the master password. You'll be in good shape then. Don't pay anybody for free information.

QUOTE

The disk lock is a built-in security feature in the disk. It is part of the ATA specification, and thus not specific to any brand or device.

A disk always has two passwords: A User password and a Master password. Most disks support a Master Password Revision Code, which can tell you if the Master password has been changed, or it it still the factory default. The revision code is word 92 in the IDENTIFY response. A value of 0xFFFE means the Master password is unchanged.

A disk can be locked in two modes: High security mode or Maximum security mode. Bit 8 in word 128 of the IDENTIFY response tell you which mode your disk is in: 0 = High, 1 = Maximum.

In High security mode, you can unlock the disk with either the user or master password, using the "SECURITY UNLOCK DEVICE" ATA command. There is an attempt limit, normally set to 5, after which you must power cycle or hard-reset the disk before you can attempt again.

In Maximum security mode, you cannot unlock the disk! The only way to get the disk back to a usable state is to issue the SECURITY ERASE PREPARE command, immediately followed by SECURITY ERASE UNIT. The SECURITY ERASE UNIT command requires the Master password and will completely erase all data on the disk. The operation is rather slow, expect half an hour or more for big disks. (Word 89 in the IDENTIFY response indicates how long the operation will take.)

These sort of threads frustrate me.

This simply, flat out, will not work.

If it is working for iceuk, then he is confused about his procedure.

You CANNOT unlock an hdd without either the master or user hdd password.

Software, regardless of operating system, CANNOT "retrieve" the master or user hdd password from an hdd, you must know it.

If you do not have the eeprom data which was used to lock the drive, you are out of luck.... end of story.

--Artifex

PS: Some further technical details, taken from a good explanation on hdd locking, are below.  For even MORE technical details, refer to the ATA specification.

reading his procedure it seems he probably had his own eeprom loaded into liveinfo from some previous unlock attempt (and forgot it was loaded) and thats how he was able to generate the correct unlock code for his test HD

in short, this procedure (like others already in the tutorial section) will only work if you have a valid eeprom.bin backup

I have a stack of hard drive from xboxes that were taken out so we could put bigger hard drives into the xboxes, we are now trying to to use these drives in computers. also I have a 120 gig hard drive that was in an xbox bt I want to convert it back somehow to a PC hard drive.
Nothing I've tried seem to work. I haven't been around as long as some people but from my experience These drives cannot be unlocked. If anyone wants to PROVE they can if they record on video the entire process I'll host the file no matter what size. Also if they only have a VHS recorder they can send me the tape and I'll convert it.

I been around this scene for quite some time now and i wrote also some error tutorials (use search). The only way i once fixed a locked drive into a unlocked drive was that i 1st brought the locked drive back to the shop[ i bought it and said it didnt work. Then they gave me a new drive. And voila it worked.

No serious, i tried everything described everywhere and it just does not work.
Theres absolutely no way to unlock a locked drive without the eeprom or hddkey.

Anyway I have been working on the holy grail of unlocking HDDs w/o the key for some time now and currently I have blown up 3/4 of the drives I've experimented on.  Half of the surviving drives are still locked and 2 drives have been successfully read in a PC without access to the key (note that they are still locked and a reboot of the PC is enough to make them inaccessable again).
My most recent writeup is: HERE
There is a (new) thread dedicated to this topic HERE
