Yeah my V 1.0 box powered down one day after I moved it a few inches... I thought to myself "hummmm that isn't supposed to happen"... Unplugged it and plugged it back in and noticed that the AC connector was really loose.... Ripped out the PSU and low and behold... Both the Solder Joints where broken... I resoldered them and all is well..... I now don't take out the AC cord from the Xbox as I don't want it happening again and shorting something out....
And the Power Lugs supporting the connector is total BS.... I mean damn.... It's as if MS was just setting the Xbox up for failer.... I guess they want to kept people buying them, but if they loose money selling the actual hardware then I guess I don't see what their engineers where thinking when they came up with that PSU design... |
so the reason my plug fits really loosely is because the solder joints are broken? Bah, I thought I was done opening my xbox for awhile... and mine's also a v1.0
so let me get this straight, i can basically just solder the two points and i would be fine? and also i want to buy a solder iron not only for this but to solder other things as well, such as if i buy ram chips for the xbox and stuff like that, so what wattage soldering iron would i GENERALLY need or do i need a specific one for different jobs?
Theres nothing wrong with the design of the connection pins on the power supply. It is not a good idea to plug the AC power out there as it always causes a spike (Spark) down the PSU as you do it. The machine as with all modern electronics is designed to be left coupled to the Mains power permanently.
In practice all the PSU we see with damage in that area is caused by the machine being pushed back against the back of a wall or a cabinet causing permanet pressure on the input cable or constant plugging and unplugging.
Any soldering iron will repair the damage obviously use a bit of extra solder and it will be fine.

| its not the connection pins design we are talking about, we are talking about the connection pins having to carry the load of holding the connector in place. I have a 1.3 box here and the connector is fixed and rivoted to the board on either side of the connection pins |
That is the design of the connection pins isn't it. You just said they changed it on later versions.
I think they do not wire them direct as it is more cost effective to then supply the relevant Ac mains lead for the country that the Xbox is shipped to other wise they could have loads of xbox stacked up with say 3 pin plug on the mains and orders needed with a 2 pin plug.
Possibly a lot of it is many people do not treat the xbxox as sensitive kit of electonics so consequently stuff gets physically broken and like you say by the v1.3 they realsied it and modified the design of the input socket.
ok i soldered the points like you gusy said but it still turns off, but it doesnt wiggle anymore like it used to, it was loose on the solder point it self but i soldered it and its not loose anymore but it still turns off out of nowhere, i think it might be the solder i used this solder isnt the real thin solder, its kinda thick almost thick as a nail...maybe its the solder?
its the solder points on the bottom, the two....pins i guess....that are for the power cord are soldered to the power supply board, and when you unplug and plug back in a lot it gets worn out and loose, i tried to solder mine, but i dont think i used the right solder, i used thick solder maybe thats why ?
Before you resolder it. Scrape the coating off the track that goes to the 2 pins. If you scrape about 5mm off then when you solder also make sure the solder runs onto the copper track for each pin as well, just in case there is a break in the print to the connection socket.
im still having trouble with the xbox v1.0 power supply..i soldered the points which the two prongs of the power cord are attached to the powersupply i unscrewed the thermistor which is on the powersupplys heat sink and screwwed it back in...i still have problems of it turning off...i even wiggled teh cord in the back pretty hard and it doesnt poweroff so that means its somethin else i guess anyone have any help comments?

This may sound stupid so ignore me if it is and u allready done this.
But have u made sure the fan is working so the box aint overheating.
no thats a reasonable theory, but yea my fan is plugged in and set to normal speed 20% and my temps are normal too, but its not the temperatures for SURE because after like a WHILE when i havent used myxbox and everything is cool (temp wise) and i turn on the xbox it would turn off, and then i would turn it back on and then it might turn off right away or it might turn off while im in mid game after a few turn ons and offs it would eventually be stable and stay on but it is very very very annoying especially when you make progress in a game where you cant save much...
