your xbox sill shut down if the cpu temperature reaches 71ºC (160ºF)
I have an xbox that i have softmodded. The EvoX dash has recorded a high temp of about 152 degrees F. Is this too hot? How hot is too hot?
thanks,
papaholmz
I have a WD120BB HDD in my box now and the normal temp it runs has gone from around 50 to 54. What exactly is a normal/good temp?? I took the top off the box and put a 14 inch room fan on top of it. It now runs between 46-48. What fans/permanent cooling methods would y'all recomend???
Well, even though i wouldnt want mine running that high, it isnt BAD,
BUT
I would at least do the 12V mod or buy another $6 12V fan or put a 40 mm under the HDD blowing AWAY towards the heastsink for the back fan to pull it out if you really want it to be much cooler.
Hmm, well I'm gonna get a 80mm fan soon, if possible also a fan with a LED, since my xbox is in some sort of closet for all sorts of Electronis devices, like dvd player, xbox
, it is already not in the most perfect situation for cooling, and since my dad "reorganized" it, my xbox is almost onto the ceiling and it doesnt lose as many heat as first. First I had about 56 degrees, with some time playing games from HD, Now I already have 60 and above within about 15 minutes.
definatley isnt good
most consumer electronics will be rated for an external ambient maximum temperature of +40 degrees celcius or so
if your xbox is pulling 60 internally at room temperature (of say 25 degrees) then it's going to break sooner or later.
I cant remember where the temperature probe is exactly in the xbox, i suspect its measuring one IC or another
a good rule of thumb is that if you cant hold your thumb on a component that has no heatsinking for more than a few seconds, its waay too hot and it will need cooling. and if you cant hold your thumb on a device with a heatsink for more than a few seconds, put a bigger heatsink on it or cool it another way
to cool my box a little i've cut out the jewel and bunged some mesh in, i'm really too lazy to put a bigger fan or mod it much more right now, but i'm getting temps of around 48 running games, and thats a 1.1 xbox
seriously i'd look at some extra cooling, read the tutorials.... the 80mm fan is a good compromise if you like a quiet xbox. an 80mm 12V fan is better, a bit noisier but cooler!
your xbox wont fail overnight so dont panic, at 60 degrees though, i wouldnt expect it to last for the warranty period!
....they test component lifetime by running them in artificially high temperatures for a time - say, if its specced to 40 degrees, and 5 years they may run it at 100 degrees, it fails in a month then some mathematical relationship would give a expected lifetime at 20 degrees, maybe 1 week at 100 is equivalent to 2 years at 20 or something like that,
not entirely accurate, but gives you an idea
Yes i had already figured out it was way to hot, so I'm first gonna make sure my box get's back at original point, and as I said I was planning on getting a (LED/Neon) Fan of 80mm. And about the warranty don't worry, according 2 manual it's only 1 year, and I already openen my Xbox, so warranty is gone anyway.
I agree with scooby
ok, but being in the electronics industry, i certainly wouldnt be too happy selling devices with those kind of temps inside them, at room temperature.
just imagine a hot day, or if you decide to have the heating on a fair bit, an extra 20 degrees above ambient room temperature would start screwing up some of the less tolerant bits on the mobo, notably the hard drive for a start
40 degrees ambient, added to the heat generated by the hard drive itself makes for at least 80-90 degrees, that'll fry it sooner rather than later.
CPU temperatures of mis sixties is, admittidley little cause for concern, silicon juctions will start to fail at half that again, the CPU may last (say) 4 years instead of 10 due to accellerated deteoriation (electron migration / tunneling)
if everyone says its ok, then fine, its ok, thats what MS have allowed the xboxes to do,
anyone any returns stats on these things?, going by their records of software development I wouldnt be too surprised if this wasnt a partial oversight
yank the heatsink and lap it, then use artic silver thermal paste. with the fan at 12V mine doesnt break 43°c after several hours of use.

What are the average temperatures for the xbox cpu and motherboard? CPU temp should range from about 40º-65ºC (104º-149ºF) Motherboard temp should range from about 33º-49ºC (90º-120ºF) |
You're fine.. don't worry..
The best cooling solution for you is to get it out of that console cabinet or whatever you have it in. Put it on the rug in front of your tv
Well, it's in a more open space now, and it's already 10 degrees down to about 51, 51 after one hour of Unreal Chamionship, but still getting a 12v fan with LED's so I have the nicest looking xbox at the LAN party soon.
I get 53-54 C on my 1.1 with standard 70mm fan. With 12V mod CPU reaches 46-48 C, MCPX is at 34C (wow), but... With 12V mod I can fucking hear my Xbox, when I'm in another room. I tried 2 original 70mm fans, and I tell you; that 12V mod is sick and not worth a....
. Get better 80mm fan.

If your ambient temp is 25, and your in a room 20 degree's higher than that (45oC) That's pretty damned hot, and the last thing I would be doing is sitting down in front of a television playing X-Box.
Although I agree that cooler is better, there is a noise vs cooling factor (unless your using peltier plates, or some kinda liquid cooling solution etc) and really, in two or three years, the next incarnation of X-Box will be out, and we the only things these ones will be doing is sitting in a closet or functioning as part of a cluster server.
If you have the money, invest in cooling, if you don't, don't worry about it, your component life may be shortened, but will you really be using your X-Box in 3 years? Will you even be using it in 2 years? Consoles are becoming more and more like PCs lifecycle wise.. Remeber how long Intellivision lasted?
What is a good temp range for my Xbox cpu?
How accurate is the reading in Evox?
I'M not to sure about the ideal temp, but i would suggest taking the heat sink off and putting some good compound under it.
I was just wondering what the recomened range in temp is for a hard drive and CPU.
I am running a 7200 seagate what would be the recomened fan speed.
