Title: Beats Of Rage
Post by: VampX on November 06, 2006, 11:10:00 AM
I just tried running Final Fight Apocalypse 2 and beatsofragex_v4 could not run it,
there's a source on xbins and it looks like it could be for V4.

The SDL source can be downloaded here, it was released on July 30th and it looks like the most recent version.

Looks like i'm not the only one hoping for an update.

Any coders willing to update Beats of Rage?

I doubt it, its been 8 months since they released their first (and only) xbox port and that one only included 4 player support.
i read some talk about someone who was going to look into it, but nothing seems to have happened.

I have many connections in the BOR scene and am sure that I can get a hold of the latest source if someone's interested.  I'll do what I can.

hmm I really thought that I read quite recently some of those in the bor forums were working on it now as X-port has no plans for any further upgrade.

As of yesterday, the OpenBOR engine has been updated to 2.0050 and the source is available at www.borgeneration.com.

Apologies in advance, VampX, if this is redundant to your link above as I can't access BOR Generation here at work.

I think because of this (from Borgeneration forum/general talk/everyone must read/):

I have gone in and revamped our banned address list to stop spam from hitting our registration servers. For the most part we should be ok for now.

However, make sure that you and your friends can still access our forums. If not then let us know.

What I have done here is blocked out companies that offer users to use proxy address instead there real ip address to mask who they are. If they must be sneaky to get in then i don't trust them anyway. User your real ip addresses!

On the plus side of things.... banning these unwanted spammers... should keep the forum from crashing or slowing down..... but thats just a guess.

Nothing works right now except the original Beats of Rage.  Any other mod you try will crash.

Sorry Slybeast but that is not true at all. I have been playing a ton of games on it. What I did notice is that I made a folder on my xbox drive called BOR. I dumped in the files and went to launch it. What happened is that it went right back to the xbox dash. I took a look and noticed that this new bor update HAS TO HAVE A specific folder name.  In fact after clicking the default.xbe file, it makes the folder for you wherever you have it stored (in my case e:/games). The folder it creates is called "OpenBor". I then just transferred over the files from one folder to the other. ALSO MAKE SURE you have the original untouched BOR.PAK game in the pak folder for any mods to work, but again this update and playing mods does work

Let me clear this up...

Any other mod besides the original Beats of Rage will crash at some point, probably not long after the player select screen.  So yes, other mods do work, but are unable to be completed due to crashing.

All clear?

well I hate to really be the thorn in your side, but I have been playing some mods quite a bit past the character selection screen without an issue. I was also reading yours and other follow ups on the BORgen boards.
Maybe their is a 128 color pallet bug, but saying ALL MODS do not work/cannot be completed is stretching it a bit.
Either way its a start and Im sure the issue is something that can be ironed out in future versions

No, no thorn at all.  If you've got something working, post which mods you tried and were able to play through to the end, and also how you have them set up on your Xbox so I can forward your results to the appropriate person.

Thanks.

For anyone that (cares & still) has access to a SEGA Dreamcast, umm, just launched "The Beat Down" (beat 'em up collection) that has 6 good BOR mods plus others content on a single disk!

It's at ® U'*** Gamer! and also, some big torrent place.

Edit: I, as well, have gotten, a multitude of different mods to work on the XBOX...

Hey Slybeast,
  I was able to perfectly play though crisis evil part 1 (completed version not demo) without any issues at all. I have the games at their default setting. The only time I really change any options is if their is a screen size issue.
 To be honest I have mostly been trying out various demos and full games playing some for quite a bit without any problems at all. Crisis evil was the only full game I did go through and again no issues. I hope this may help with future versions/ironing out the bugs in some way--
  My xbox layout in case you need the info is as follows:
soft mod via splinter cell exploit, unleash X dash

That's interesting.  Hyper Final Fight 2 crashes for me almost immediately after the select screen, and you played it through to the end?  You're using the recently release OpenBOR 2.0052 by SamuraiX, right?

Please join the forums over at BOR Generation and post these findings under the appropriate topic.

Slybeast,
     what forum on the BORGEN would you want the findings posted? Under the general xbox forum or the one listing this new beta release with the 128 collor pallet bug?

I too had hyper final fight 2 crash shortly after game play begun, perhaps Nemo1985x is not using the latest non xport version?

Well I have sent the source to nes6502.  Though I haven't heard from him in over a week... I do believe he is working on the crash issue as I don't own a modded xbox to test on and debug the issue with a linker.  So, I would imagine he is progressing as he would have the ideal setup for debugging.  So... who knows... perhaps you guys will get a build soon enough.....

As for SlyBeast..... I wish there were more devs working with me.... as when I decided to start working on the engine full time there were 3~4 devs along side.  Now its only me handling 4 different platforms with a crap load of inhereted bugs!  But I am only one man and my schedual hasn't slowed down either so.... don't quit on my just yet.   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Man, I can't wait until this D&D game is finished! Long ago I too was making a D&D BOR mod, I ripped a bunch of bosses and enemies from D&D and KoD, and other games. Just as I was moving along with it, I lost all that work in a hard drive failure; I didn't make backups!  And I haven't really messed with it since. And now, here coms BonusJz, with a hell of alot better mod than I was doing! I'm overwhelmed by how much work you've put into it.

Questions-
First, the big question- Can you estimate a release time?

Is the elf in it? I just love the elf. happy.gif

What games are you using music from? Anything besides the D&D games?

Do you think it's difficult for the average player? Either I suck at fighting games, or some of those BOR mods don't have enough 1ups in them. tongue.gif

About how big should the download will be? It looks huge.

How are the arcades in Poland?

Oh, and MAKE BACKUPS!!! For the love of god, make backups!

Depends-is not so easy (like D&DTod,D&DSoM)

So far round 30MB (I'm try to optimize everything)

I'm not sure who runs the show there anymore.  A lot of major players have left the scene or lost interest altogether.  You might try contacting Mr. Q.  See if you can get into the site by using The Cloak and send him a PM.

Lots of great features was added recently along with update of xbox. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

But i think he have still the same problem - messing sound(if more than 3 sfx are played at a time (IMG:style_emoticons/default/uhh.gif) ) and problem with pallet (if game use more than 128 colors with connection with remaps (IMG:style_emoticons/default/uhh.gif) ). I'm sure that here are people that have experience  and knowledge of programing on Xbox and i have big favor to ask that you check the source code and maybe optimize it for Xbox.
Also if you cannot be yourself but now someone that can ask him - please
Maybe is only some wrong/missing line or something like that

SX can update xbox ports with every new release ,we need only the good/hard base on witch openbor be standing .Thanks in advance for help and support

Zip with source code

Also i make trailer for Dungeon&Dragon if you want to check it out

It shouldn't be missing sound effects.  That was corrected some time ago, back before BOR Generation was around.  I thought the palette bug had been corrected too.

Post by: BonusJz on February 17, 2007, 10:43:00 PM
No , not missing but messing/broken/crashed (for me that happens when 3 or more sfx are played at one time). So can someone confirms that he experience problem with sfx (in me demo of MS there are loots of sfx played at one time {when charater shooting) so by easy to hear that - if that happen for you)

So again please confirm that bug.
Thx in advance

No - this is next reason way we need someone skilled enough or so nice to look on Openbor source code and make them Xbox optimized
(drive is for me minor problem as i don't have big HD (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)  but sound messing makes me crazy (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grr.gif))

Lastly, VampX I go by SamuraiX on most forums.....  I'm the one who brought XPorts port up to date and ported OpenBoR to PSP and much more things related to OpenBoR.  People have offered to help and I've sent them the source but it seems life consumes them and I can understand.  So while I updated and merged XPorts code to my SVN SourceForge Account without ever using my own xbox for testing.... It seems I will need to take it to the next level myself and mod the box myself and test all my changes myself.  I sure didn't like coding blind but I didn't do too bad.... the thing does run....(IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

We don't need anybody.  I will do the unimaginable and soft-mod my xbox since I use the 360 full time these days to go on xbox-live.  I will sort out the remaining issues with this current platform!

That's good news.  Again, I am here to help as needed (but if you're going to soft mod your Xbox you probably won't need my services  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) ).  Question: Is it doable, as far as what you're capable of, to add HD support to OpenBORX (at least 720p)?  I just bought an HDTV and I'm quickly discovering that anything running at a resolution of less than 720p looks like crap.

Brief off-topic alert: By the way, I just bought a 360 & hopped on Xbox Live myself.  My gamertag is SlyBeast69.  Add me if you like, I play a lot of Lost Planet and Gears of War online.  This goes for any other board regulars that would be interested in getting together for some online gaming.

As for 720p Scaling yes I can..... but my technique would NOT be the most optimized one.  I've never written any Intel MMX code (XBoX Scaling Code is based on Intel MMX SNES Emulator).  But I'm pretty sure XBOX has plenty of horse power left.  Probably one of my first changes after the palette issues is rewriting the sound engine code.  As its serial based I believe.....  need to look deeper but if that is the case I will rewrite the code as a thread and that should keep the sound clean as it will share cpu cycles with sound and engine.

Original Engine Source 320x240 -> Final MMX 2X Scaled Source 640x480.

Now I could do the following just to try out....

Original Engine Source 360x240 - > New Engine Scaled Source 720x360 -> Final MMX 2X Scaled Source 1440x720.

Any attempt at adding HD would be appreciated by not only me, but others as well I'm sure.  If it can't be done, it's not a deal breaker.  Good luck.

Personally i'd love to see HD also. If it can run without any hiccups...then im all for it. There's a fair amount of endusers that would appreciate this.

Of course we appreciate ANY work you do for our scene. smile.gif

Add video selector to Xbox port and you can be sure that i add them to my games (IMG:style_emoticons/default/muhaha.gif)
(still i think that action is more intense on normal screen)

BorGeneration forum is down - here is new site :

LavaLit

I also found great program for PC - Flicker Fucker! that greatly sharpen picture (if flicker filter is set to 0) also on default.xbe of OpenBor port (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)
(search xbox-scene or lavalit - its fucking great program)

this is great news smile.gif i just discovered all this a few months ago and its pretty much the stuff i have been dreaming about for years as a street fighter fan. i literally had a dream one time about a side scrolling street fighter game  love.gif

i tried it on my pc first and all went well, but an update somewhere along the line killed my joystick functionality and i havnt messed with it since (no time either). i also tried strider x on my xbox and was amazed. have played it through a few times now in 3 player mode. i really like the xbox version over the pc one because of the ease of multiplayer. im glad you are going to spend some time with the xbox version smile.gif good luck with your xbox mod. (also be prepared to use it more often smile.gif 4 player mame/kawa-x/snes will never get old, for me anyway)

BonusJz - thanks for the link to LavaLit. just tonight i found that borgeneration was down and was thinking there were no sites left out there, so i googled 'bor forum' and got a link to this thread smile.gif cant wait to see your mods. im really looking forward to vampire.

No.... I have a 1.0  and the reason I wanted a modchip was for the debug bios linking for development.  Probably can be done other ways but i wanted the easy route if there is such a thing.

But to be back on topic....

On my private branch I have everything running smoothly!  I did notice there was a few bugs that no-one had reported.... shame on you my fellow bor modders!  Like Intro, Scenes and some Cinematics are not being played properly.  Well I am investigating those issues.  Plus  I have finally merged the game library and it is now a shared source with the rest of the other platforms.  Trying to keep things as clean and portable as I can.  This will also make it easier to reproduce issues on other platforms as well.

Its been a tough road cleaning up OpenBoR on all platforms!  I still have to cleanup the XBoX platorm as there is soooooooooooooo much unecessary code and soooooooo much optimizations can still be done!!!!!

Lastly, yesturday i was playing Final Fight Appocolypse 2nd -Ed.  and my question is that one of the mods that crash during in-game play as i made it to the to second level without any issues.  If so..... it would seem all the code clean up and bug fixing by uTunnels and myself are starting to pay off as we by accidently might of fixed this bug......(IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Great - I waiting for release to see this optimization  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/love.gif)

There will be an official release this weekend that will contain all platforms!  Having the modchip/debug bios payed off as the in-game crashing is fixed!  Rock Stable!  Oh and fixed a few other bugs too.... and it seemed that some mods were running close to out of memory.  So now xbox uses sprite flipping technique that I ported from my PSP work.

Now I have been busy with GP2X but now it is running stable, optimized and without issues.  Oh and I forgot to mention I ported over the SDL/Windows version to Linux and compiled it under RedHat in like < then 2 Minutes the port was up and running perfectly if there are any Linux users here.

Geeze I've ported/supporting way to many platforms....lol

PSP, Windows, Linux, Gp2x, Dreamcast, XBoX and Dos

Well stay tuned... for the release.

Well there was no release this weekend.... But there is a bright side to not having a release......  I rewrote the Controller I/O code for XBoX.  Originally it was in pretty piss poor shape and I will leave it at that....   So I stripped it down back to the root XBoX calls and rewrote the damn thing and what do we have now.......

Full 4 Player support with Left Analog/D-Pad directional and 12 Button Configurable Support!  Oh and every controller will display its port "Joy 1 - Joy 4" when configuring so you don't get confused.

So.... this also fixed the intro and other startup issues.  I'd have to say the xbox port is starting to come along now but is still in the darkages compared to my ports (especially my golden nugget psp port).  But now that i've modded my xbox...  It will get there.... since i did spend money for a chip..... lol

Next step is to look into the audio/video code and probably rewrite those as well.

So its going to take a while.... as I would like to strip each I/O function back to its root because just looking at the code....  its just screaming for help!  So much unnecessary code for no reason...........

Not Sure if I will release an Official Build today or within the next few days....  But if you would like to try it out and get a copy you know where to reach me.

Official Release v2.0691 is now out!  Just so you know please delete your old settings.sav since the redesign of the controller interface.  Oh and you are no longer limited to any hardcoded path...   But use all the included files in the distribution!

Here are the release notes from my site over at lavalit.com

Ladies and Gentlemen may i Introduce you to Official Release v2.0691

Please note that if you do repost this information on another site... do not change the contents of this post!  And also do link back to my site so that new comers can find more information about OpenBoR.

Well without further hesitation......

By SX:

1.  Dynamic Animation Frame Memory Manager (No more Frame Limits and Also reduces memory by HALF!!!)
2.  Memory utilizations in system options menu (shows how much memory is being utilized by your mod)
3.  Controller I/O interface redesigned for PSP (Thinking of wifi mulitplayer next on the list).
4.  XBoX now uses Sprite Flip Technique.
5.  XBoX now supports 4 Player Control.
6.  XBoX now stablilzed, no more random crashing!
7.  XBoX hardcoded paths removed default.xbe anywhere with the included folders!
8.  GP2X now RUNS!
9.  GP2X now uses Sprite Flip Technique.
10. GP2X now uses Filecaching for faster file loading.
11. GP2X now uses open2x dev environment.
12. GP2X now uses SDL Hardware acceleration
13. Unified Libraries for all platforms!
14. New LINUX platform Identical to Windows version took me a whole 2 minutes to port it!

However the Linux platform is not included at the moment until i get to work since its the only place were i have a linux machine available..... But don't tell anybody.....

Delete settings.sav for both PSP and XBoX due to new controller layout!

New or Updated Commands

knife and playshotno can now both be used together!

Character's text file under command anim.

quakeframe:
--positive means old style quake.
--negative value means new style extreme quake.

Next 2 go under levels.txt

timeicon - is used as the lower layer for the countdown of the timer.  That means while the digits are counting down they are on top of this icon.  You modders can now draw a nice little box with the word time or something of the sorts instead of the default white box.

timeicon  path/to/icon.cfg  x y

bgicon - is used as the lowest layer.  That means its used for masking or whatever technique you choose.  Player(s) or Enemy(s) status will be placed over bgicon.

bgicon  path/to/icon.cfg  x y

By uTunnels:

1.  Script Engine!
2.  Free Command system removed since we have script engine!

New or Updated Commands

blockade as a spawn entry command refer to link:
http://www.lavalit.com/forum/index.php?top...3.msg265#msg265

blockade {position}
at {position}
It works in a direction-both level, set the left most edge.

And scrollz command:

scrollz {min} {max}
at {position}
This command sets min and max z autoscroll position, only works in direction-both/left/right levels.

Indivigual Palettes per level.
I've made some dynamic palette in each level.

That is, you can set up to 40 palettes in each level using command palette.

palette {path_to_a_act_file}
palette {path_to_a_act_file}
palette {path_to_a_act_file}
palette {path_to_a_act_file}
......

Similar to panels, they are indexed, 1st is 1, 2nd is 2, ...etc

You can use setpalette command as a spawn entry, that is

setpalette {index}
at {position}

set index to 0 will change back to normal palette.

I planned to add this command in frames, but I'd leave it to see if it can be easily done by scripting. If so, i think you can made some background effects by changing default palette in mid-level.

Bug Fixes:

1.  Enemies cant throw stars
2.  Unsummonframe kill the summoner.
3.  Enemies can run between walls even if there\'s no gap between them.
Adjust enemies/npcs\' speed while chasing, now they use normal speed.
New command maxwallheight {int} in levels.txt. Now players wont spawn onto a wall that is higher than that. It is default to 1000.
Hard checking for player spawn, so they won\'t spawn into holes even if the holes overlap.
4.  Bug Fixes to Attack functions.
5.  Air special is back!

By Tails:

1.  GP2X now uses mmuhack.
2.  nograb 2 on player to prevent him to grab any enemies or player.
3.  I will try to repair blockratio code(is the one that is doing the problem on block).
4.  Add all Darkbor features.
5.  Repaired weapons code, now it dont cut animation anymore.

If I'm missing anything my fellow dev's let me know so i can update this post.

You can grab OpenBoR-v2.0691.rar in the Engine Section from the Download Center!

Forgot to mention that you can delete menu.gfx, settings.sav and openbor.cfg and use all the included files!  That means menu.pak within Paks folder.

But I have a question why can't i edit my own posts to fix typos and such here?  Only the last post by me is editable if no-one posts after it.

SumolX,

Would it be possible for you to modify OpenBOR to run from the F drive on the Xbox?

Currently it only seems to work from E:\Games\OpenBOR and I want to store and run it from F:\Emulators\OpenBOR.

Thanks.

That is correct in the last official release I removed all hardcoded paths and made them relative.... so you can place it anywhere you like.  Its nice being able to test my own code and not waiting for responses from testers not that waiting for testers is a bad thing. I just love testing my own changes is all.  So much more can get done quicker!
