Title: Openmugen For Xbox(a 2d Fight Engine)
Post by: sakir2000 on October 28, 2004, 01:38:00 PM
Hallo my name is Sahin Vardar aka SakirSoft from the OpenMugen team.

OpenMugen is a redevelopment of elecbytes M.U.G.E.N and it is opensource.
For some reason elecbyte has stopped the development of M.U.G.E.N and so we are now redevelope it.

It exist more then 1000 charackters and stages for this Engine(look at www.mugenation.com).

OpenMugen will also aviable on XBOX and so the XBOX will have 1000 of popular 2d Charackters like from streetfighter or other fighting games.

It enables you to create your own 2d Fighting Game.
You own Stages, chars and screen motives.

But remember it is in the beginning stages and it also a beta.
We need a web master. If some one have time and motivation please tell us.

You can find the beta at http://sourceforge.net/projects/openmugen/
and ouer poor web page at http://openmugen.sourceforge.net/

OpenMugen is designed to be platform independent.
Also it works on Linux Windows and XBOX.
But no bins for the moment for the XBOX because of the XDK but when the OpenXDK becomes better then i will use it.

Sahin, ap hindi bulata hai?

If you didnt understand that its ok, just trying to see if I was correct.  onto the topic at hand, THANK YOU SO MUCH!  You do not kno how happy I am to see this.  We really need to Port Mugen to the XBox, so many people wanted this.  Here is a suggestion from an avid fan:

Keep all settings the same (such as how you add stages, characters and screenpacks) to keep things simple and easy especially for htose who ahve used Mugen in the past.  Also if possible, allow for Mugen created characters to work on this port (dont know if that would work as it is a recreation)

THanks a lot and I cant waiy!  Good luck!

Thanx kollision

Of course MUGEn chars will be playable.

OpenMugen will be mugen with all it features and some other new features.
The most importent of them will be the network playing option.

But remember it is a beta and in the development. But i work hard to get it to work.

I think it will take 6 month to bring it in playable state , maybe less ;-)

Youre welcome

Were you able to read what I wrote?  Man, this is crazy. network play.  However, how would that work?  Everyone is going to be having different characters and such.  Is there going to be a thing that checks each persons data and stuff?  And I thnak you for your hard work, where would we be without it?  No mugen hehe.

No sorry i was not able to understand your "ap hindi bulata hai".

For the Network Playing i have too concepts for it.

The first and the best (for me) is to release OpenMugen Online Packs.
A online pack is a set of chars by a them like Street Fighter them or a Dragon Ball Z them.

So if you want to play Street Fighter chars online you must have the Online pack.
Because evryone with this pack has all the same chars.

The second and more advantages idee is to have a main server wich loads all the chars  from each mugen player to its hard disk and then uploads the chars to players which they not have. But this would be very expensive for me.Because i will need a very fast server with a lot of free hardisk space.

But first it is importent to bring OpenMugen in a state like the Orginal M.U.G.E.N

Hi there Sakir,

What I was asking is if you can speak hindi.  I thought maybe you were indian because I saw your name.  I am not indian but I can speak some hindi.

your online pack is a great idea.  I have a slow internet connection on uploads and I would help if I could.  Im stuck with DSL, so you probably know its upload speed is not very fast.  Unlike cable...Maybe you might be able to get sponsered and get a server?  I dont know how easy this is but it could be a possibility, or prolly someone who likes mugen could host it.

I personally would like to see a SF pack.  Have you seen Evil Ryu and the Evil Ken versions?  Well the main site that has it is down, but heres a site that has his pics http://www.angelfire.com/ca7/plas/mugen/do...il_ken_ryu.html

I knwo I shouldnt be going ahead, as there is a long way to go, but this is just exciting.  Are you the only one coding this?  Prolyl theres some coders out there that oculd lend a hand if they wanted.  Thx a lot for your work Sakir and take care.

HI kollision and thanx for you interrest in this project.

Yes i am the only person who codes for this project.
The whole source is from me  cool.gif

And i am a turkish male wich lifes in germany not hindi.

As a good programme my intenstion is to use as less resource as possible.
And so i will do it in the online option in OpenMugen.

OpenMugen is rather simple as todays Top games like Doom3 and will not use so much bandwidth. My goal is to bring OpenMugen playable on a 56K modem.
But DSL will be defenitiv working for it.

It is amazing of how much infromation can be stored in 1KB

I hope i can handel the different Verison with each other in online mode.

PS. Does anyone know about a port of the SDL_net SDK for XBOX?
Title: Openmugen For Xbox(a 2d Fight Engine)
Post by: kollision on November 05, 2004, 06:02:00 AM
Ahh Turkish, cool, sorry about that.

Do you think youll release the source when its all done, so other programmers can dabble in it, or its going to be all private source?

What did you mean by the 1 KB?  What stuff can be stored in it?

What I think would be cool, if you would like to add, is a tag team multiplayer, like the 2 vs 2 but with 4 ppl or 3 if theres 2 ppl on one xbox and 1 on the other.  Also perhaps a tag team arcade mode with 2 ppl online.

Again, I hope maybe someone can jump in in giving you a hand, especially with that question you asked.  I think the unprofessional would know a lot about that, as his game is going to be online.  Its in the sticky.  Please let us know of any impoirtant stuff regarding Openmugen, we are waiting in anticipation.  Thanks so much again!

PS. Does anyone know about a port of the SDL_net SDK for XBOX?

I beleive HCl, the person that ported Open Transport Tycoon for the Xbox, has a modified SDL lib for the xbox on his site that supports SDL_Net.

EDIT: Here it is http://titania.student.utwente.nl/xbox/

lantus has a port of sdl for xbox. Im sure u can talk to him on his site he has the source.  As for open xdk... it has a long way to go. It would be better off if you just made it able to be compiled by the orginal xdk for people who have that... instead of waiting who knows how long for open xdk to work.
Title: Openmugen For Xbox(a 2d Fight Engine)
Post by: sakir2000 on November 05, 2004, 05:30:00 PM
I have already compiled it with the lantus SDL port but i think there is not SDL_net port for it.

I will check it.

QUOTE

I mean information for Networkplaying.
Imagine 1KB up/down speed.
In this 1KB it is possible to store the Players position state and so on...

I only want to say that i will do my best to keep the bandwidth usage of OpenMugen at a minimum.

QUOTE

Of course i will compile it with the XDK but with no offical bins.

Geesh, thx a lot man!  You are right, this will definitely run on 56 K!  I have nothing to worry though, im on broadband.  Yes....

This has got to be on the best ports ever (when it comes out).

Also, did you check out the Evil Ken and evil Ryu from Mugen Institute?  Those have to be the best characters ever made for mugen.  Check out there main site here: http://www.reubenkee.com/httpdocs/MI.htm

And you can get lots of characters, new and old at this forum:
http://mugenguild.com/forumx/index.php
It also has from SF3 and MVC2.

The port is not the problem.
First i work on the Windows version with the  Dev-C++ compiler wich is the GNU C++ compiler and is ISO-C++ conform.

So OpenMugen is multiplatform compatible and compilable on every Platform with an ISO-C++ confrom compiler and a SDL port.

So there is nothing to port  biggrin.gif it must only be compiled on the platform.

And of course the Windows and linux version comes out.

I wanted to get started on some stages and the game intro Im kinda new to mugen so im not sure what the old version supported

the game intro and character endings will it be in avi/wmv/xmv and the stages what resolution and how many colors can it support?

Sakir, are you going to be integrating different types of characters in it?  For example, are you going to have Street FIghter characters in with Dragonball ones?  Just stating my opinion, but I dont think that would be cool.  Ud have one sticker sized goku versus a giant ryu.  You think your gonna be using characters that all look similar in graphics?

The Orginal Mugen was/is a DOS game so there is no support for wuch avi/wmv/xmvv files. And intros are realised in other ways.

The orginal reselution of Mugen is 320 X 240 @ 16 Bit.
So this not a standart today but OpenMugen use some garphic filters to produce a better image. So the reseultion of OpenMugen is 640 x 480 @ 16bit.

A higher reselution or more colors are nonsence because the soure image is 320 x 240.

It is like in Mame the games are desigen for low res and then stretched with graphic filters.

OpenMugen use the same filter  biggrin.gif

You could always boot up epsxe and capture all moves from tekken into sprites,
and then make your own 2D tekken game.

why anyone would want to do that i dont know.. i've seen it done with Mortal Kombat 4 characters and the outcome was very.. ugly. ph34r.gif

No offense takin Zas, thanks for the apology cuz I kinda took it the wrong way, thanks again.

However it is possible to make your own Tekken fighters (althought this would take time editing every sprite).  I know its not what your looking for, but its an option and the results, if your good at it, are really nice.  Just take an existing sprite and edit it to how you want it, its really surprising to see things people come up with.  Such as:

http://dcvsmarvel.studiosmh.com/

Theres even more original work out there than this, but this game looks promising.

This is going to be the best homebrew / Port ever made. Mugen with online playability... Maybe you could add a feature to share characters  over the net kinda like Trading cards. Have you looked into X-link Kai support  since it's already integrated into a few Dash's already it might make it alittle easier for you. Man I can't wait for the release. Mugen is a fantastic app - I hope there are options to download hundreds of characters in one go rather than having to get each one individually.

Anyway, I love this on the PC, very happy to hear it's coming to the Xbox. Want to know how to make this better? Integrate the app with Xlink Kai so we can play against each other

Keep up the good work!

Title: Openmugen For Xbox(a 2d Fight Engine)
Post by: sakir2000 on July 03, 2005, 12:40:00 PM
I am not realy sure about a 56k but hey we are able to try it so we have to find out.
When it is possible to play Ego Shooters or other things over the net why not a fighting game.
The problem is not the bandwidth , the problem is the ping time.
But when you play over lan there is no problem about that.

But we will figure out how to do that multiplayer thing over net.

there's so many sites and re-codes of mugen on the web, does anyone have a working site with lots of characters? and a win/dos working mugen engine? i've used it before but that was WAY before it was abandoned. i'm thinking on making a mini/pocket faust from guilty gear. i remember the character creation was insanely hard when i first heard about it.

When the platform has an network connection yes.
A psp version why not when some one port it and when SDL is aviable on the PSP.

By the way it was the last update for the next 5 weeks.
I go on vocation.

Then why did you say "might as well just err buy win 98 and download the old mugen"
Winmugen is an official Mugen build thus exactly the same as the one you were going to play on 98.
its just newer and it runs on XP.

Great!

I wonder if the future versions will be able to run my 6GB sized personal Mugen build biggrin.gif (which was a headache to put together over the 'years').

Probably will as Mugen doesn't load all characters into RAM but initialization will probably take time as it takes around ONE MINUTE! on first run to start on my Athlon64 3400+ PC with 1GB RAM ph34r.gif

Yeah guys i am back from my 5 week vocation in turkey.
5 Week full of sun and fun. And i am ready now for openmugen.

I see that here is a demand of the xbox version of openmugen.
Should i release it under xbins????

OpenMugen is well going.I hope i will have enough time for this project to complete it.
Damm i want to play OpenMugen.Yeahhh!!!!!

I saw some questions about compatibilty.
OpenMugen uses the lastets Mugen standart( Linux/ winmugen ).
To use old chars it will be a converter program aviable.( not yet and don't bug me for it please)

SakirSoft
ohh by the way Linux and win32 bin are aviable on the website.

Looking forward to it!

I never really tried MUGEN till you announced you were bringing it to xbox, so over the past 5 weeks I've been building my own fighting game out of it.... and on the PC it rules...but Xbox S Controller and Digital Sound will make it 10 times better, that and playing it on the 42" screen instead of the 19" monitor.

Does OpenMugen support extra coding in character.def files?
And does it have a frontend to select different games / mods?

Can't wait to find out  biggrin.gif

Cheers to you buddy  beerchug.gif

For now my first priority is to get OpenMugen's engine to get full working with all his controllers and triggers.
Menu, screen pack and stages are not on my list yet.
But they are the easy part of ther project.Once the engine works fully i will add them.
Be in mind that i am the only coder and that i can only work on openmugen when i have time for it.
This month i will have time for it and will continue my work.
Things are going well and it is fun to code openmugen.

Also the xbox version will be tha same as the pc version.
And the beta will only support 2 characters.

Mortal Kombat characters, all with new abilities, which i hate.. >_< QUIT ADDING MOVES PEOPLE!!!

Wow, I can already imagine having an "Ultimate Street Fighter" game that has every street fighter character from the entire universe of games...like blend everything from Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3, and Street Fighter 3 third strike... probably be a good 75 characters to choose from. I'll start working on the character select screen... So will this support Dramatic battle? (2 vs 1, 2 on 2 teams 4 player etc?)

Time to start thinking of titles..

since i have collected tons of evil characters i want to make a street fighter mugen game called, street fighter: good versus evil, or something like that and have all the good versions of the characters able to battle evil versions of themselves smile.gif

ken vs evil ken etc. i could even have my own story line going on... like bison has made clones of all the good characters and they have to fight them all or something crappy like that lol. i love mugen!

but.. but.. i did exactly the same as they did with their dark ryu's/ken's/chunli's/guile's
i made his normal clothes darker with psp!

maybe i should add a darkened avatar of him but with like.. eerie red eyes! (i could use Mspaint like they all do!)

thats what i'll do, my Dark Terry Bogard will be much better then their dark ryu's!

as a matter of fact as soon as Dark Terry is finished i'm gonna put him against all the dark ryu's that were ever made!
all 100000 of them!

The Mugen "scene" is full of whiners and lamers. VampX has hit the nail on the head with the most prevalent problem in the scene.

Anyway, if you want evil, I will give you the epitome of evil muhaha.gif

with nice friendly colors like pink and yellow and light blue.

Haha, yeah, Watch Mode is loads of fun but some very powerful characters have poor AI code so even though they are more powerful than their opponent, they get beat in watch mode.

You think Dark Chun-Li is crazy but have you tried Motaro (UMK3)?

Just like in MK, he deflects ALL fireballs and his moves take off tons of energy ph34r.gif

The only problem with Mugen is that lots of characters have infinites and mixing chartacters from other games makes everything so unbalanced tongue.gif

Some shots from the Motaro vs Dark Chun-Li match wink.gif

Greetings all.  I am a huge fan of mugen and have been reading/keeping up with this thread since its inception.  I have no coding/ripping/animation abilities so I have just kept my mouth shut and have enjoyed reading the progress.  I LOVE the cover art - Exquisite!  I am excited about his release.  THe reason I have decided to speak now is that I have a suggestion/favor to ask -- if at all possible -- of the coder.

Is it possible at the main menu of this application (once its all completed) to have a scroll feature that would allow the application to automatically load different characters/stages/stories from different folders?  For example:  Have a title:

All characters
(then subtitle)
Xmen vs whatever
(then subtitle)
blah blah vs blah blah

etc.. etc...  So that mugen character collecters such as myself can automatically load different "mugen games" without having to redistribute every character we want to be avaliable.  I hope this is clear.  Of course it would be up to the user to organize the characters into the folders of their own xbox and make their own subtitle groupings, but I was just wondering if it could come precoded this way?

I have about 30 gigs of bandwidth to spare on my server . I would also love to build you a simple portal\forum based site . All I would ask is that you buy a domain . And if whoever did the graphics for the cover could build me a header that would be awesome .

Also I would like to know is openmugen even playable yet ?? Or is the old non open source version of mugen better ??

Pm me if you are interested in free hosting .

I really want this for my arcade machine  beerchug.gif

QUOTE

It openmugen is playable with the two KFM chars. But it is not fully playable like mugen yet.Remember that openmugen is work in progress.
And most parts of openmugen are done.

Here a status.

Sff file 99%  ( cointains the images of the player )
Air file 99%  ( stores animation and collision boxes)
Snd File 99% (sound file )
Cmd File 99% (stores the command )
cns 50% ( Finite State Mechanism = FSM)
act 100%

Stages 0%  ( easy to implement )
Menu  0%   ( easy to implement )

50 % of triggers works and over 41% of the controlelrs in mugen works.

http://openmugen.sourceforge.net/
in the download section you will find the Win32 and linux bin.

Currently the old mugen is better.
Be in mind openmugen is not just a clone of mugen it will be better and you have the chance to improve it.
Its opensource and crossplatform compatible.

Just thought I'd share a little sumthin sumthin i've been working on ready for the xbox release.

This character is nowhere near done yet (around 10%), but I've already programmed in his moves and have designed all of his special moves too... just gotta draw em and put em in order!

May I present to you, the first Xbox based MUGEN character -

MASTER CHIEF!

If OpenMUGEN is being coded to be as compatible as the current WinMUGEN then it will have no problems supporting the CVS2 characters out there.

Its more to do with the game engine code than the graphics/models/sprites of the characters themselves wink.gif

This is going to piss off some capcom fanpeople... but you know it's true.

QUOTE
Yeah cause people will be like "hey we can make crap like Capcom Fighting Evolution too!!"

Anyone can make a new capcom fighting game .... just toss in some old chara with mabye + 1-5 new characters. using all old sprites.... (must have ryu) ken if you want too. also chun li or sakura can be added for female side <.< pick sakura tongue.gif oh and a must have since ssf2 akuma has to be hidden boss , secret chara , can be shin or plain.

and there you have it a new capcom fighting game.

i must say i don't hate capcom.... i do like street fighter... but when i put it up to king of fighters that brings something new each and every year... it makes capcom look alittle weak even mortal kombat been doing more then capcom since mk4... they added new character nice game modes... new system witch i don't too much like but is alot fun then the old simple one.

i ave to say as much as sf3 seem new... it just took stuff from the old game... characters seem to almost have the same fighting tech as old ones like the boxer.

The edge enhancement filter in Mugen/WinMugen is horrible and I'm wondering whether you will add Kreeds 2xSai double res filter to OpenMugen?

If someone can help me, I will love you forever.

I had never heard of Mugen before this... and now I'm more excited than ever. I've recently acquired the program, as well as a few really well made characters. However, it seems that more are nearly impossible to find.

SOMEONE, please, is there a website out there that has collections of WORKING characters? Every site I find either doesn't work, doesn't exist, or is not in English (and also doesn't work anymore). How can a tool this powerful that's out there on the web just seemingly die out?

If you know of a place with collections, or if YOU have a collection you could share for WinMugen, I would greatly appreciate it. Please let me know or PM me. This is simply the coolest thing ever. I'm EXTREMELY excited about OpenMugen.

if you check a couple posts back you will me and some other people posting a ton of mugen site links.

and the reason Mugen is dying is because 90% of mugen creators are buttmonkey's who think they create "art" by ripping sprites.

and because they think they create "art" it has become a pretty vocal rule in
many a mugen forum that "thou shalt not host other's creations"

and "if a godly mugen creator dies or loses his internet acces/webspace then the
character will forever be lost since thou shalt not host another man's character"

also making a website filled with characters is punishable by death! since those
websites are called "warehouses!" and a warehouse is evil because they host
characters without the godly spriteripp.. i mean artists permission.

so yeah.. check some posts back and you will find a good collection of links.

It's not dead but it does seem like it... this project was started over more then a year ago and only 3 pictures was shown on the site from a tv. sadly no beta or even a small demo.

Mostly if you wanting to play mugen download it for pc... becuase it will take along time before the xbox game comes out. i my self don't think it will be out before this year ends.

(so far quake3 has shown more promiss of a release.)

Guys remember one thing.
The PC version is equal to the xbox version.
I am developing it crossplatfrom compatible.
One source code for different platforms.

If you want an XBOX demo grap the source and compile it for XBOX.
But may be i will release it on xbins.

By the way i am the only one who is working on the project.
So you could supprort my by saying nice things like "Yeahh super project ", "We belive in you" or you make an donation , a big donation  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif

PS.
The i did some mor nice progress on OpenMugen.
On the time when the PC version is ready the xbox version is also ready because of the same code.

Yeah but you gotta understand that there are many fakers out there,
it would be nice to actually see OpenMugen running on our Xbox'es even if its just a beta..

I say release a beta and i'm pretty sure once news of its release hits the frontpage of Xbox-Scene
we'll be seeing some new people here, of which some might even be skilled at programming and willing to help with OpenMugen.

I my self still have all my mugen stuff from the old one rar in a file over a gig.

waitting be used for the xbox or pc...

Someone had a bunch of tutorials and such, and he got pissed and deleted them all off the forums.  Now we can't edit old posts because of it.

Really the links wasn't removed by people like capcom and snk... mostly the never too much cared about mugen people... I am sure they don't like it when there characters been used but the never went out of there way like sony does...

Mostly  it's becuase people just get bored with mugen and stop supporting it... and peoples sites end up dead. so far mugen hasn't showed too much that is new. it's only been ported to windows added a few stuff that dos did not have.

Also when mugen was ported alot of characters wouldn't work for windows right so some needs to be ported or you need to download the windows mugen type of the character.

if your looking for chara mostly the best time to get them is when they come out , try searching google for mugen forums there are a few good forums with alot of release. i wont give out any sites but you should find some that way... not all sites are english.

ok i found winmugen and what can i say,THIS PROGRAM RULES,man its amazing its got 2 vs 2 at the the same time,i had some cool characters, like from MK and they even do fatalitys!!!and 100"s more

sakir2000 if you can port this to xbox you would be a legend,i suggest not to even worry about setting up a network for online play, because no one will use it
id rather see it released early with no network code

this will be the best homebrew game on xbox by a long way

keep up the goodwork sakir2000 beerchug.gif

also someone who has the beta vertion.can you please dump it some where permanent so all the mugen xbox fans can try it out, thanks

Just to keep the enthuasiam alive I have decided to release my collection of Mugen characters.  ITs nothing remarkable that you couldnt find by browsing hours yourself, but nevertheless its about 150 or so characters that will most likely add to a lot of peoples collections.  I've released it torrent style.

you can find the torrent at segahubs.com or ********** not on xs *  the torrent name is called mugencharacters.7z

I would love it for other people to do the same.  I would be nice to add to my collection too.

Awsome man!!! Finally a guy who shares his characters. Some of those mugen guys are anal about their characters. Anywho ill look for the file But would it be against policy to post the direct link? mugen is not illegal. nor are the characters. sao i would feel that a link to the torrent files is totally legit.

Again, thanks!!
Title: Openmugen For Xbox(a 2d Fight Engine)
Post by: ephesith on October 26, 2005, 07:08:00 PM
well I named one of the prominent torrent sites and xbox-scene bleeped it out so it seems like they dont want me to put a direct link.  Any way go to segahub.com  its a great place/community for dreamcast/psx etc...

you will have to register with the tracker to d/l torrents.

these characters are by no means "mine"  as in I didn't create them. I only compiled them.

anyone who doesn't want to share their creations/collections are very very sad for many reasons.  If you spend all that time making it. Then by god let the world know.  Isn't that want communities like this are all about?

You would think so but the MUGEN community ARE NUTS exept for the coder sakir2000. I've been to their forum and they treat you like dirt. i cant believe sakir2000 is coding this for them. Most are rude and stuck up. I wouldnt do jack for them to be honest. its sad with all the people in that comunity sakir2000 is the only one making this engine. even though this is mainly a pc project. and were lucky enough for him to make a xbox port. with all the websites of mugen I have found, Only one person steps up do this amazing project.

You know.. Sprite ripping and audio ripping and coding a character is alot of work,
thats why i dont understand why these people arent working together..

like make a MugenForge website where people can upload packs of ripped sprites,
then when someone wants to make a new version of that character they wont have to
go through the whole tedious sprite ripping thing again.

but noooooo lets all guard our spriterips like crazy, how dare you even use my character in a mod you're making!
I demand it to be removed!! grr.gif  grr.gif

Seriously thats why Capcom doesnt see Mugen as a threat, buncha uncoordinated monkey's  laugh.gif

but like i said, a nice site where people can share their uncompiled characters, that would be the answer.
no more "oh noooes it doesnt work with the current mugen version and the author has fallen of the earth again!" kinda crap.

Sourceforge but for Mugen characters/stages.

It wasn't source, it was a .xbe. That could get this whole project shut down. While the elitest comments do need to stop, so do the people that say he needs to "give a bit back to the scene". He's working solo. He's doing nothing BUT giving back to the scene.

Hmm some times i ask my self why i do all this stuff ....
By the way i do not code it for the mugen community its self.
I do it because i love 2d beate'm ups and i love mugen.
Also i the mugen communty is not the same as mugen was alive.
In the best time of mugen the internet was full of many mugen related sites and members were nice and frendly.

But i realy thinking about a donationg link for openmugen to get a bit more motivation biggrin.gif

About the xbox version.
I will be able to compile a legal *.xbe with the OpenXDK from coustic.
But i have to wait until they make it more complete.
But respect for those guys. They do/did a good work with the OpenXDK.

well a couple of posts back there was this whole fuss about the xbe being uploaded, so i guess that kinda answers your question.

and yeah maybe i was being elitist, but come on.. the upload link was just a couple pages back, and still people go like "where do i download it?"
no mention of the link being dead, they just didnt even bother to look.

so yeah my post was kinda mean, but i didnt mean it like that.

if i'm an elitist for actually bothering to check up on OpenMugen enough so that i
was able to download the beta for the week it was up, yeah then please call me an elitist.

As for sakir2000, you rock man, and yeah Mugen used to be about creating and sharing, (and naked mai shiranui's!)
and hopefully with OpenMugen these days will come back and people will feel more passionate
about it all instead of being so over protective.

I give you my thanks (and a nice donation the moment OpenMugen allows me to set up my dream match of SF2 Vs Fatal Fury 1)  ;)

and i hope that like OpenMugen people will also make their characters OpenSource. (well uncompiled anyway)

You sir rock.

Also i wish to give credit to the openXDK team (or person)
its people like you who spend their time creating something awesome
and for that i give you the same thanks i just gave sakir2000.

Have either VampX or Perfect Dark tried making a character yet? I seriously doubt it. So far the only way I've found to rip sprites is to play the game in an emulator and do a screen cap. Making sure you get every frame of every move is almost overwhelming. Right now Im working on a new Omega Red and I'm over 80 frames and that's only some of his regular ground moves. I still have regular air moves, both air and ground specials, his super moves, his blocks, his hits, and his dizzy. Can't forget his sounds now can you?
Some people do a little more then just download a character.
To try and bash some one because they want to guard their work is retarded. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see a spot where you could get sprite rips but I think it'd only be right if you had to trade for them or something, so people would appreciate exactly how much work goes into ripping a full set. lol and I can imagine if there was a site for it people would start complaining, "Well why can't I have your mcm project?? I only want to edit it a little..."
Oh, yes lets hear it. "You're just a selfish jerk for keeping stuff to your self" or how bout the argument, "sakir2000 is willing to do all this work and give it away, so should the sprite rippers!" I never said I wouldn't share my Omega Red sprite rips with people. But what I wont do is let people have the edits I do to them. If some one doesn't want to share, that's on them. If sakir wanted to pack it up and call it quits would you knock him? and on top of that, most people DO share their characters. Do you think it's so horrible that's all they share? Do you think it should be mandatory for them to share the source of their work? Would you put any one down if they didn't share the source code to their projects?? It's not needed for you to enjoy their work so don't complain if they don't offer it to you.

I hope sakir2000 keeps up his great work. Hopefully by the time we see MUGEN on the xbox I'll have Omega Destroyer (name still in the works) finished and we can all enjoy it on the xbox. beerchug.gif

Well open-mugen for any platform isnt finished and is a long way from being finished,I really cant see this happening before christmas, and may be not at all...

why not port win-mugen instead of open-mugen? we need xport or other skilled people to look into this, because i cant see sakir2000 doing it soon/ever

Have you even read this thread? obviously not, if you did you would know a beta has already been played on xbox. all thats really left would be to fix any bugs and add customizability. and you would also know this is exsacly what no one wanted to see. OMG why cant we just port winmugen!
Simply put openmugen is open Source winugen is not. if it was there would have probably been massive ports already. now please try actually reading and doing some research before you post something like this again.

i am using x dsl linux  and linux mugen
and so far it's ok.

but the memory limitations can hnder it.
but music works and some characters work.
for the must part i need to find out how to use a controller
with it.

I had it running under x-dsl also. The speed seems good but I also couldn't get the controller to work with it and well, using the virtual keyboard isn't that great for the fast action type games. Now, if only I had a keyboard for my xbox...

First I must say that this is an awesome idea. I read the entire thread and I must say that I am impressed! Keep up the good work sakir2000!!!  I cant wait to see this! There is even a Naruto MUGEN for those anime fans! (Pretty awesome! Who would win? Kakashi or Ken?) LMAO!

Got a question on the network play though! Any chance of making it System Link Copatible? That way people who use VPN services such as hamachi or tunnelling services could start up a game together (not to mention at an actual LAN party or in a LAN environment.) Just a thought though! Keep up the good work man! Im rooting for ya!

i have a question....

the videos you been showing over and over are they from the xbox one or the pc ver.

if they are from the pc ver then why are you showing them.. even if there some crazy person out there who wants to see them they could just download the pc ver and play it.

if it's from the xbox ver then it looks like it is kind of almost done so why an't it getting released or atlest giving a good beta out.

They are from the PC version. They were shown because some people didn't know what Mugen is. I guess the videos were put up to show those without the knowledge.

The Mugen community is still very alive with new character releases still happening. Recently a few characters from SNKP's new game, NeoGeo Battle Coliseum were released.

Hopefully this will get sakir motivated to finish? a little competition?

Anyway, i'm thankful for a working linux dist.

Those screenshots above were taken by me from my personal Mugen build. I tried a stripped down version with less stages and characters on XMugen-linux v0.1 on the Xbox and it functioned exactly like WinMugen on my PC except for some error message I got once about the video mode and the pad not functioning properly sometimes because of the JoyToKey problems.

Just so you all don't know, WinMugen is based off LinMugen so the compatibility is pretty much the same between the Windows and Linux versions.

There is one big issue and difference between Windows Mugen and Linux (Xmugen) Mugen versions.

Linux Mugen is case sensitive whereas the Windows Mugen is not.

This is documented here:

There's really not much to try, it was only a Kungfu Man Vs Kungfu Man demo,
so the only thing you could do was battle them against eachother but lifegauges
didnt work so there wasnt much to do..

dont expect a full mugen where you can add characters and stuff,
it was just kungfuman and you couldnt add anybody else.

for me.. i loved seeing it on my xbox cause it showed me there was some good progress being made,
but for the standard gamer who just wants to "play" with mugen.. i wouldnt bother.

VampX who's still looking forward to a finished OpenMugen someday,
so that he can make his classic crossover game "Fatal Fury 1 Vs Street Fighter 2"

Xmugen is the $hit right now.

i got it working to the point where we might not
need open mugen. but i shouldn't say that
cause i am looking forward to this release
since it's open source. everything seems to work
great with the right setup.

Yeah no dis to Alg5 (who just made a wonderful port of an old application) but I'm still looking forward to OpenMugen.  Although it will prove to be a challenge to level the playing field, network play would be awesome.  Considering that the mugen (xmugen, winmugen) is nothing more than a hacked beta, it would be nice to have a completely stable engine that others could eventually modify and add new features as time goes by.  Right now if mugen doesn't support what you want to do, too bad, its not gonna happen.  But a new improved opensource engine would allow for infinite possibilities...

after having played xmugen with my friends i am thinking
net play will be a bad idea. evil, mo-02, broli, and other characters are so powerful
that it will really mess up balance. someone can relate to what i am
trying to say but that's my opinion also how will openmugen be more stable than xmugen?
do you mean crashing which has been fixed for xmugen?

it's goingto be a while before openmugen comes for xbox so lets
look at the pros and cons of both.
Title: Openmugen For Xbox(a 2d Fight Engine)
Post by: Nemo1985X on February 22, 2006, 08:54:00 AM
Net-play could work , but there would have to be a unified way of renaming exsiting characters..
Only then could we (in the infamous words of P-Diddy) play together.

it's really easy to get it to work.

step 1 get all the files.

then make a dir in the root of E:

should look like:

E:mugen (don't rename this folder for anyreason)

once you have this made put all the mugen files in there.

Step 2

if you have xdsl running and you have the linux.cfg thingy of booth xmugen and xdsl
just combine them  with a simply copy paste method and save.

makre sure the cgf file is in the root of the E: drive with the ird-loop.gz

step 3 if you have the gentoox loader or any xdsl loader( a simply xbe file)

load up linux

when it loads up you will see fatx. choose it
and xmugen should be an option there.
load it up and the screen will go black and all the linux code will pop up.

once all the patches and drives load up it will ask you to change the res from 320x280 to 640 etc
32 bit.

from what i have tested you need to have a usb keyboard or hitting
Y on the controller will crash mugen.  i used my wireless leyboard and hit y on it instead.

mugen loaded right up. hit f1 and the game is yours.

step 4

have loads of fun

wasn't quite that simple for me...I had to edit the mugen.cfg file a bit to get it to work properly on my setup.  But it works relatively crash free for me now...  biggrin.gif

Not necessarily.  Sakir said he would work on it as he had time over his holidays (which are probably far inbetween).  He also gave out his sources, so anyone could finish what he started.  He was to the point that he had working betas for PC, so might not be that much more to do, who knows.  As interesting as the online aspect would be, I'd by far prefer to have a Mugen with more features and capable of running natively on the xbox, not just an "emulated" one like we have with Xmugen.  Posting here in the asbsence of Sakir doesn't mean that this is dead.

The demo isn't much to brag about.  It was only one character whcih you couldn't change and a generic training stage.  Its only purpose was to show that the person had succesfully copied Mugen.

Yip right i have released a new demo.
I had a bit of time and coded a bit for openmugen.

In this version you can test your chars with openmugen.
Some works other doesnt works.

Now for the xbox part.
I lost my XDK so i cannot compile it.
But the source code should be combileable on nearly all platfroms.

For now the CVS source is not uptodate.I am realy thinking about the opensource aspect of openmugen...

you can get the current demo on

Wrong Mugen thread, you are interested in Xmugen which you can read more about in the Emulators forum.
(which is actually fucked up since Mugen isnt even an emulator so why the fuck is there a mega thread about it in an emulator forum?)

anyhoooooooo Openmugen is written from scratch and does not involve linux, its a rewrite of the old mugen engine.

The Feature of OpenMugen

I know everyone is wondering about OpenMugen and the opensource part of it.
As for me i don't see any good reason for me to keep it opensource.
Since i joined the OpenMugen project i was the only one who worked on it.
The whole source code is written by me.
As for me am a poor 21 years old student and my Mom and my Dad have debts
and things are not getting better for us.
I worked hard for openmugen and i learned a lot form this project by my self.
I thinking about a way to earn money with this.
So i will not publish the code anymore to the public. I love and support opensource projects but i am not in the condition to spend time for openmugen for nothing.
Maybe it will be available  via advertising support or in different versions.
I was thinking about tree version. Of  course it will be a free version avaible but only with software rendering and some other things but it will be full functional. Also i thinking about a commercial version with 3 different rendering modes( Software , Direct3D , OpenGl).
And in the feature you can purchase a license to sell you own fighting game via the engine.

Currently i am planing to call it ShugenDo.

So stay tuned.
Keep in mind there will be a free full functional version of ShugenDo so don't worry (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

So sorry but life is not a peace of cake ....

Here the current version of ShugenDo

Look, I have a kid, I'm broke, and I was laid off.  I still give back to the Linux scene.  We all benefit from open-source, and we should try to give back.  I feel sorry that this guy is in a bind.  But I doubt that he will make money off this project directly.  I doubt many people are going to pay and register this.  Those are the facts.

If you start a project with the promise of open-sourcing it, then you should keep to that.  What he should do if he wants to make money as a programmer is learn C#, .NET, DirectX programming, etc. and then look for a job doing those things.  That is where the money is.  If he wants to profit directly from this project, then his best bet is using it as an example to a company that wants to hire him.

Given the game is supposedly so close to completion, opening up the code would allow others to debug, and help him finish the task.

Ultimately that is his choice, and he is entitled to do as he chooses.  This is just my opinion.

your probably right that most people woudnt pay for it...

but that is something that will be decided when openmugen is finished and people get to try it...

I for one would for sure pay for openmugen if I could play it on xbox just as Xmugen and play it online vs others.... but only if online functions worked, and they would have to work well otherwise your right... no one.. NO ONE would buy it then...

but I am truly looking forward to some note on this project and also online functionality ...
but for now I keep on dreaming about it... and waiting ... and playing Xmugen

Is it still going to be ported to Xbox even with the fee?  Or has the Xbox aspect been canned?  I'd really like to see what kind of frontend setups (like my current UnleashX menu) will work if it is ported.

I have made a port of this to the XBOX today compiled from the old 2006.03.02 source. I need to do some debugging on some of the crash dumps. If anyone can explain a little more the structure of MUGEN, as far as loading character and stuff please advise. I am not that familiar with the game setup, all I want to see is a Ryu v Scorpion battle.

Currently working hard to get this project finish after it i will think about the opensource concept of it

Well thats good news i guess.

my opinion towards this is still the following :

Opensource = Donation
Not opensource = New elecbyte situation waiting to happen and i would never start work on my own mugen game
if i knew it could never be tweaked to my own needs.
oh eh.. No Donation.

Ohhh wow long time since i check this forum
Good to know that some people are still interrested in this project.

Yeahh im currently struggeling with the opensource idee of this project
and you know the reason why.
But this is not my firt priority probelm.
First want to finsh this. The code itself is still very portable i also added a plugin system for the graifc part.
So all system can use their own grafic API for rendering and are not forced to use slow software rendering.

I i love opensource and supports them.
But opensource also have some disadvantages for me.One of my fear is that openmugen would have 1000s of crappy clone compilations and people would be confused.
The second is i can't beleave how much money some one makes with crappy litle shareware games.

Ok maybe donation would be my rewards but can't believe that people will spend money for openmugen.
Also maybe i can figureout an advertising modell or some thing like that.

If you are going to try and commercialize this then there will be alot of legal responsibilities on your part. It would be your responsibility to make sure nobody can use your engine to:

display any copyrighted material
use any character that has been copyrighted
play any copyrighted music

Think of the RIAA, these game companies have lawyer's just sitting around and doing nothing. If you are making money off their copyrighted stuff (mugen is nothing without character's) even though you didnt create the character's, it is your engine, they will go after you.

Open source would be best because an idea like this would never die as new things would be continually added. Also a donation system would work best (i believe). If we ever got an xbox version of openmugen, that works and has tag team matches, i would donate some $$

Why people are sticked to this money point ?

OpenMugen is still open. The only thing is that i did not update the the srccode on the project site.

Also maybe i will upload my current src code.
Only thinking about the pros and const about this.
Its a long time since i began to develop it.

Since then i was the only person who develop the whole code by myself.
The reason for me to put it opensource was to work in a team.
Nobady wanted or was able to help me ....

OpenMugen or lets call it my project will be still free. But can't see any good reason for opensource but thinking about it.

Its a shame that since now i never saw OpenMugen on the PSP  because i have no PSP.
Kinda ironic for me.The author never saw his own program (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
Currently my finacle status is not good , so i was thinking about all this money stuff.....

Ok its late i go off
I have  to finsh my project, thats my first priority.

meanwhile enjoy some vids

sakir2000, you do what you have to do. Don't let any outside pressure make your decision for you.
If you need the money set up a website with as many advertisements on it as possible to host the files, And set up as many ways to donate as possible. I personally wont use paypal, so if that's the only option you'll be missing my donation.
The vids are great! Keep up the great work man.
Hopefully you can use this as a stepping stone to get an awesome job. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Sakir, I know things are busy for you, and probably hear this 50X a day, but at what % of completion are you?  I was under the impression that you were just duplicating the original engine, and then would add new features from there.  So far from what I've seen, you have progressed pretty far with the characters, but either haven't started, or haven't displayed any stages working in the new engine.

Also do you have any idea of what if any speed improvements your engine might provide?  I like to think that using a dedicated engine rather than the current "emulated" mugen via Linux would run much better on normal xbox's (128mb ram xbox's run mugen flawlessly).  Any idea on when you might release your latest compilation as a new beta for the xbox?

Yes I too am curios of your efforts sir.  I applaud your continued work on this.  I own both an XBOX and PSP and I would love to see you not give up.  I think Odb718 had best suggestion I know the starving thing does wear kinda thin...

Hey, sakir2000, I found this topic on google and have to say you're doing a great thing making an XBox version.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) MUGEN seems like a great game, I personally have a piece of crap computer and can't play it. I can't wait for it to be done!

OpenMugen was renamed to Shugendo and thus got its own new thread.

*prays for lock so we can all move to the correct thread in the future* (IMG:http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/8505/smileyprayrl3.gif)
