I guess the Country its made in isnt too important as someone stated theirs was made in Mexico.

Just go to the mainpage of xbox-scene.com and look through the versions link at top. From reading the boards, most Samsung Xboxes were made between October and Late November 2002 and is made in China
I noticed that some people had samsung boxes made in August but it was made in Mexico. The thing is try to make sure your Xbox is made after August. That will be like 70% (guess) that it is NOT a V1.0.
I got my xbox used, not refurbised from gamestop local store. Refurb units has the date covered up with a different sticker. But its mostly luck so shop around.

Heh sorry, I ment box as in the packaging box. I did my assumptions from the date, manufactuer, etc. and I lucked out.
But I think there are really clues out there that will allow you to pick the right xbox version. There are a series of info that you need to follow, though I dont know 100% yet. But you need to consider the following:
1) Date (after 8/2002, before 12/2002?)
2) Lot No. ( mine was 0246, maybe the larger numbers are the later productions, i.e. no samsung dvds)
3) Country (Mostly China, but one person said theirs was made in Mexico)

On PAL Xboxes, the guts of the unit can be determined from the 8th and 9th digits of the serial number, in other words the first 2 digits of the 5-digit section (that's right, no need to open the box!)
Codes found so far are:-
21 - Thomson DVD, Western Digital HD, 1.0 PCB
23 - Philips DVD, Seagate HD, 1.1 PCB
24 - Samsung DVD, Seagate HD, 1.1 PCB
30 - Philips DVD, Seagate HD, 1.2 PCB
More codes to come as I come across them!

Because Samsung Drives cost less. It's all about the quotes for the parts. I mean PS2 have changed parts 7 times to lessen the cost.

I think it's all hit and miss, and only really tells what ver it is 1.0,1.1,1.2 the other stuff is luck or the batches which have come through..
Heres a different one can you work it out...

If you go for a 24 model, try a lower number, like a 240, 241, 242 or 243. The ones in this range that I've come across are all Samsung/Seagate/1.1 machines.

BTW, philips drives are good too. I have a philips in one and a samsung in the other. Both actually read everything about the same... You should have at least tested the philips you received...

Because wenn the factory orders a set of players they come in containers. Ever heard from the FIFO method. First In First Out. A lot of factories work that way.
We can only be sure if everyone post that codes. And it is possible that the place of manufacturing and the team that manufactored is does mather. They all pick the drive out of the same container.
But there are always people wo know things better, without correct understating (numbers and info).

Well you can, but this is actually giving people a pretty good idea which systems has the Samsung drive beforehand.
That is, I guess with the info here people can be 75% confident that if they get a system with those dates and numbers that theyre getting one with a samsung WITHOUT having to open up the box.

anyways, I just got a replacement box from best buy today, and I didn't know it til i got home and read through this forum completely, but i apparently traded a v1.1 thompson for a v1.1 samsung. (thanks for the pics of the trays! i havent cracked mine open yet since i am waiting for thie xecuter 2.1L)
I used to work there, so I had some of my friends in the Media department go through all the XBOXs that they had looking for the latest manufacture date, just for shits and giggles. the one i got was mfg 2002-12-06, srl 24905. i saw lot numbers on the other XBOXs mfg mid to late 2002-11 and earlier. this one had a different style label with no lot number like the others. i also dont see where the country of manufacture is specified.
well, that was fun. im sure that im telling you guys something that you already know, but i hope i helped someone.

The guy was nice enough to let me check the tray before I bought it, and YES, IT'S A SAMSUNG!
A word of advice: check the box to see if it's made in china. Those are almost always a samsung. If you see a 24 in the serial number and its made in china, you can be 75 % sure its a sammy.
Oh, and btw, I tried finding what I wanted in Electronics Boutique no luck. The sales guy went as far to tell me that no Xbox's were made in China (cause the only thing they sold was made in Mexico). He even told me he's never seen a single xbox with holes in the drive tray... I was about to buy one from there but thank god I changed my mind!

0246 was my Lot too. I got a Samsung. And your serial number is a good one too. Chances are it will be a Samsung...but dont take my word for it though...its still a bit of luck.
Carefully open the seal (use a hairdryer to remove the tape so it doesnt rip) and see for yourself.
You can tell its a Samsung when you eject the DVD drive and it has 3 holes instead of he U-shaped hole or an upside down lightbulb-shaped hole.

Either way, you dont need a samsung to mod, but it will make your life a lot easier. And you wont need a DVD burner.

Can somebody PLEASE take a few shots of the tray of a Samsung drive so we can all see what everyone's talking about. A picture really is worth a thousand words:D Maybe even throw in a picture of a Phillips/Tompson drive tray to show the difference.
I'm pretty sure I have a Samsung because I have two thumbsize holes but I'd like to know before I void my warranty. By the way, mine was from a Toys R Us, has the 246xx number, made in Mexico, and mfg'd on 11-23-2002 if anyone was curious.

It was interesting to see that they had some really old units and some really new units all on the shelf side by side. The great thing about my local CC is they use the plastic stap security devices so the Xboxs aren't under lock and key. You can go through the boxes and pick the one you want.

I first bought one separately to see if it had a Samsung DVD Drive, and it DID. BUT then I bought the other 4 that HAD SAME LAST 5 numbers in serial number, SAME Lot number, SAME Manufacturer Date, And SAME TEAM!!!
Only 3 out of those 5 had the Samsung DVD Drive.

I bought all of them thinking that I will get SAmsungs in all of them, but unfortunately I didn't. This means that the Factories even install different Drives to the XBOXs in the SAME Days!!!
This is really bad.
