You can still play your cd-r collection by streaming from your CD-ROM drive on your computer to XBMP/XBMC on the xbox.

I have a samsung dvd in my xbox and I can read just about ANY cd, even the cheapo cdr's.

But isn't it true that Samsung won't read DVD+r   (plus r)?

which drive is best suited to read any brand of DVD+r ?  (since I have an 8x DVD+R writer)

No,almost none of the Xbox consoles will read a backup on a cd-r,all backups must be burned to a cdr-w or dvd-r or dvd-rw,also some dvd+r media works as well. Games can be burned to a cd-r,but must be recopied to one of the above media types in order to play.

You can make back-up copies on CD-R, but you'll never get them to work in X-Box; even if you mod your X-BOX. Now if you can make an real 1 to 1 copy on DVD-R or DVD+R then yes you can paly them on X-BOX.

If ignorance is bliss.. you are one happy fellow.

Reading the newbie forum is a laugh sometimes.. watching the blind lead the blind.

Honestly.. is you know something and can help.. then please do so.. but do not spread mis-information plz.

http://forums.xbox-s...indpost&p=90761

I wrote that 18 months ago.. and it still works.

You can make backups on CDR.. and with high success rates.

However.. only 12-15% of all of the xbox games would fit on a CD as is without tinkering with them.

I recommend using DVD-R media and tools like craxtion to get more than one full backup on a disk. Save money.

However.. if someone would like to place some of the smaller games on CDR.. don't mislead them with false information.

my modified xbox plays cd-r backups flawlessly. and by deleting unneeded stuff in a game you can bump that percentage up to 20-25% of games that are able to fit on a cd-r.

I would also like to add that Dvd+r has played on all of the 3 xbox's that I've owned. I have a Samsung drive in my modded box and I had a phillips or a thompson in the 1st box I owned(not sure which one) don't have it now.The newer box that I have that isn't modified I believe has a Samsung also.I've never had a problem with DVD+r with movies or games.I've also been able to use certain cdr's especially with XBMC(Xbox Media Center) viewing divx movies.

Some brands of cd-r will work in the thompson drive. Mine reads cd-r media that are a specific tone of silver-blue on the bottom of the disc.

Hi all..

I see that this topic has gone on for some time, and would like to add my 2 cents.

OK... for all of you who think that you CANT use CD-R.. You are all WRONG!!

You can use CD-R and you will find that if you DONT burn at the full speed of your burner (%50 works fine every time for me), MOST XBOX's will read them.

As for the percentage rate of games that will fit on CD-R, well that has risen aswell due to 800meg CD-R and the use of Quix and the Avalaunch dash.
I use UnleashX my self but boot to Avalaunch for ISO creation, uploading using Qwix.

For those of you who dont know, Qwix incorperates a cross link file scanner.
This finds duplicate files that are some times written to the game disc to make it larger than a standard 4.7 gig DVD (meaning you cant it up as we only have 4.7 gig blanks ATM) and removes them when creating an ISO.
In 1 case,  I found that a game was 4.9GB, used Qwix to create an ISO and removed the cross linked files and then became small enough to fit on CD-R.

I further looked at the games folders and found that they had place the audio/video clips repeated 5 times in 5 diff folders. Sneaky ay???

Try them both for your self and you might find that you will save some cash on DVD's!!!

Ok.. another alternative is to get ISO Craxion and burn multiple games to one DVD and use the menu maker incorperated.

Here is what i do,

Grab ya self Nero Burn, you can get a trial version Here

Open Nero -->Audio CD -->Nero Express
Drag your mp3(s) you want to make a cd from and drop it/them into the Nero Express window.
Burn to a CD-R

You should now be able to play using XBMC or MS DASH.

good news for every one with the "crappy Thompson drives"
they can be slightly moddified to cd-r and most formats. it takes someone with a bit of knowledge of electronics and an ohm meter a couple of hours to make it read other media including cd-r's. if anyone is interested pm me and i will try to find the tutorial. this method will however void your warranty, and dont blame me if you hurt yourself...lmao

i thought the pot-tweaking was only to make the drive better at reading formats that may work on occasion, not formats that it can't read at all?  from what i gather Thompsons can't read CDRs.  I'm a wrong about that?  Cuz that's why I swapped it out for the 616T (now I can't read DVD+r).

Actually my xbox can read my backup cdr's just fine. The trick is this, make sure you burn your cd and make it a finalized session or CD with roxio or other cd burning programs. Also Put in a game first then take it out and put in the cd and go into the audio cd option. Then you can place your songs on your box.

I do not know what the heck people are spewing here but guess what Sammy's read it all i have 2 and they read CD-r, CD-RW, Originals, DVD-R, DVD-RW. DVD+R, DVD+RW. it reads everything for me. Maybe you all are writing stuff to them in the wrong way i suggest you use HSDEMONZ guide to burning Media that way you get it done correctly.

It's easier and cheaper to try a couple different brands of cd-rws than it is to replace the Xbox DVD-ROM. However, if you can't get it to read any CD media, swapping Xbox DVD-ROMs is as easy as unplugging the old one and plugging in the new one.

If that doesn't work, try this:
1. Take out the Xbox DVD-ROM.
2. Put in a PC DVD-ROM. Plug in the IDE cable, but you'll need a molex Y-splitter to splice power from the hard drive for the PC DVD-ROM. Ignore the yellow cable that plugs into the Xbox DVD-ROM.
3. Power on, flash your BIOS, do whatever you need to. The PC DVD-ROM will read anything that it reads normally, but it will not read original Xbox game discs.
Here's the full tutorial with pictures:
http://www.xbox-scen...es/swap-dvd.php
Read over this one too, it's almost the same thing without pictures:
http://www.xbox-scen...es/dvddrive.php

Then when you're done flashing your BIOS and doing what you need to do with CD-rws, simply reverse the whole thing, and stick the Xbox DVD-ROM back in for reading originals.

Sorry I didnt answer your question before CHADTECK, I have only jumped to these forums a few times recently due to RL issues.

In one XBOX (v1.1) I have a Samsung, and the other (v1.4 a MS refurbished xbox) has a Thompson.

I have never ever had a problem reading "LASER PLATINUM" CD-R in either of the drives.

Im not sure if its due to the fact that the XBOX with the Thompson drive is a refurbished unit from MS but it works and was only $179 AUS!

It reads a little slow though, but fast enough to play music and vcds.

Kain17.... If your planning to buy an XBOX, you can't tell, in anyway, what drive it has installed untill you void your warranty and open your xbox or use an exploit.

It seems that "most" units made in 2002 have samsung drives. I have seen a samsung drive in an early 2003 unit aswell.

I look for "REFURBISHED" XBOX's' that were made in 2002 and have been refurbished by MS and purchase those at a cheaper price. At the moment, they are selling here in Australia for $161.

Most have Samsung drives, but i have had 2 that had Phillips drives, so obviously they had faulty Samsung drives and hence why they were refurbished.

I just got a new X-box today. (Long story short, Hurricane killed my v.1.1) has this drive. And, currently. I'm going to call this bull.

Of course, I've only tried one of my CD-R's (Memorex) in it, but still. It doesn't read everything

You can tell it is a Samsung drive when you open the tray.
It has two extra holes in the tray about the size of a thumb width.

I agree, I've burned a couple of games to CD-R and played them successfully.  Although the only problem is sometimes the drive doesn't pick up the track and thinks there is no disk but usually works 1/3 boots.

Just to throw a wrench in the works, I "settled" for a Phillips 1.0 system and found it to work fine any any CD-R media that wasn't blue.

I helped a friend mod his 1.1 Samsung and it wouldn't read hardly anything (including DVD-r's, and rw's).

(Oh, and yes, I only burn at 2x ... although the phillips still reads at a 6x burn)

If you have a phillips drive and you wanna get it to read any CD-R, just tweak the pot a bit.  It was easier for me to remove the top of my phillips drive and turn the pot 1/4 of the way (and it reads everything I throw at it) than tearing up a PC-DvD-Rom, and cutting up my case to make it fit, etc. And I pot tweaked several phillips drives and they are still going strong.

To those wondering if they should tweak their pot: if you are at all familiar with tweaking PS2 drives, you should know that the Xbox drives are constructed with much higher-quality components.  As long as you take caution in tweaking the potentiometer, you're far less likely to damage the drive than you would be with a PS2 drive.

There probably will never be any games that can fit themselves on a single CD.

There are many a game that fit on a single cd, for instance Monopoly Party, The Sims, Smashing Drive.

i think he was referring compatible as 'the orginal games and files' and not supposed to be compatible to "dixv, backups, etc"

No,almost none of the Xbox consoles will read a backup on a cd-r,all backups must be burned to a cdr-w or dvd-r or dvd-rw,also some dvd+r media works as well. Games can be burned to a cd-r,but must be recopied to one of the above media types in order to play.

There is a possible solution thought.

If you install a PC DVD/CD-ROM drive to your xbox you can read almost all media.

Here's the tutorial : http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/dvddrive.php

yes, that is true, but if you do that, doesnt that take away your option,to play a original xbox game? I was under the impression, that a PC dvd/cd rom would not play nor read a real Xbox game.

Correct, according to the guide you will need to disconnect the ide cable from the pc dvd-drive and reconnect it to the Xbox dvd-drive to play original games.

I know I'm whining about an old post... but since it is in the FAQ section, many will hold it as gospel...

Is simply not true.  Many will NOT read CDR.. but many WILL.  There are no numbers to support that claim.  Modded XBOX's purchased at XBOX launch, and ones purchase last week part of the new SEGA Pack have both had some success at reading CDR.

Don't discourage people from trying.  The Low Cost may outweigh the slight, and sometimes slower load time of the CDR burn.

what I don't understand is how you actually get the game to fit on the CDR.

Most games are what, 3-4 gigabytes, right?

Well, it's probably more in the vicinity of 1.5g. There are some that are bigger. There are also some that a way smaller, though. And, then there's techniques like downsampling or ripping, of course. #

And for the record: even (some) non-modified, stock Philips drives can play (some) CD-Rs. You just need to experiment a bit; also be sure to know exactly what media you're testing. Trying rebranded stuff that is based on the same dye probably won't help too much.

Yes most games are 3-4gb but some aren't and some can be split up to run on multiple cd-r's.

nope, to my amazement there are alot of games that will fit on a CDR. Seems as if they've jus wasted the space on the DVD's  dry.gif .

i have 2 modded xboxes both with stock phillips drives and they both love durabrand cd-r from wal-mart. if you have a xbox with a phillips drive your in luck, but if its a thompson drive dont even bother.

Say WHAT? I always burn my romsemu's to no-name CD-R and they always work. Also Kill.Switch works off a CD-R. Just try burning at a slower speed. Like 4x works good.

So slower speed helps? Cause i cant get a cdr to work, thoug i only tried one brand. And i got no mods done to my xbox yet, but is it still possible to listen or cdr audio?
