If one person helps just 3 people, then those 3 people help three people, and so on and so on, this world would be GREAT.

look at my diragram : http://members.lycos...69/pics/1-3.bmp

Just at the THIRD generation, FORTY people are helped!!! If we were to continue this, at the 10th Generation, (time for some quick math, 1+3+9+27+81+243+729+2187+6561+19683+59049=88573), 88573 people are involved and 88572 people are helped!!!

And Blind Samurai went way up and beyond just helping a fellow gamer out.....

It's gone, I tossed it in a  rare fit of rage. this was over a month agao, I just felt like an ingrate coming back here. Truth be told, it never worked 100%. The rumble didnt work, and looking right on the left stick had no analog, it just went full bore. I never wanted to complain because I was so grateful for the hard work. But, I'm real sorry. I dont have it anymore.

...

Haha, I was being sarcastic. I didnt literally open the window and throw it out. I tried to play with it despite the sticks being bsuted but it was impossible. I ended up just throwing it in the barrel. It was really depressing, actually. It was like losing my Xbox.

laugh.gif )

After desoldering both thumbsticks I stared at the design of the controller and the way the thumbsticks are set up for a good deal of time. Finally, I figured out the method I will reconstruct it.

My method involves cutting the terminals of the thumbsticks shorter (much shorter) so they dont reach all the way through the controller motherboard to touch the terminals on the backside. They are just long enough so they fit in the hole and will secure the thumbsticks so they wont flop around. Then, I plan on soldering a very fine wire to each of the 28 terminals (2x 14 terminals per single thumbstick) then running it through the holes and soldering it to the correctly inversed side on the other thumbstick. Currently I am in the process of cutting and stripping two ends of 28 pieces of fine wire approximately 4 inches each (very very very tedious and meticulous).

For pictures, see:
http://www.freewebs....controller.html
Thank you Blind Samauri
Specifically, see the very last picture of the controller stick with the terminals. Those suckers got cut so far down that they are approx. 1/2 the thickness of a penny. That way they fit inside the controller motherboard, but without making contact with the pads at the bottom.

Krevco's controller may very well be done by the end of the day (no promises, I've got to see how long it will take to cut/strip the 28 pieces of wire as well as resolder them). So far it looks highly promising. smile.gif

Ill update everyone later tonight.

PS - Krevco, this controller will definately rumble too smile.gif Ill make sure all functions work 100% before sending it out to ya.  biggrin.gif

ATTENTION: I NEED YOUR HELP!!

I am in desperate need of heat shrink tubing to continue this project! It needs to be very very small. It has to fit around 26AWG wire. Which is approx .05mm (very very tiny). If anyone has any of this or could even buy this (if you ever wanted to donate to this project, spend a few bucks on ebay or on the internet and get this so I can continue this project!) then it would be much appreciated. So far, my only obstacle is getting tubing for these wires so they dont touch the points.

Anyone who can help out and donate a few bucks in the form of tubing, please PM me.

Thanks

Thank you to Blind_Ninja for that picture.

Basically each of those tiny wires has to be soldered on to each of the pins in the last picture, except much much smaller (because they have been cut down). Also, all the wires have to be soldered straight onto the pins. They cannot be soldered to the sides of the pins, it has to be on long pin and wire (not a big glob of solder and a wire stuck inside of it) or else the thumbstick base wont sit in the holes on the controller motherboard. They wont fit in so it has to be straight through.

If you want to help out, please see the post before this one about the heat shrink tubing.

Thanks!

Anyways, status is still the same. I am waiting for scooby to send heatshrink although he has been banned for some reason sad.gif

KREVCO - Recently, while hacking up my controllers, I cracked the jewel that I was going to use for your controller. The dome has a crack in it. Will this be ok? I dont have any other controllers to use to replace the dome with as I am donating my only extra controller. Hopefully this will be ok, but let me know if its not. Everything else on the controller looks sexy as usual (and then some).  ph34r.gif

I've got some heatshrink I'll donate.  But I'll warn you: this stuff is TINY!!!  The label reads "24ga", but that's the actual wire diameter it will cover (not including the insulation).

Try to slip this heatshrink over a piece of 30ga wire with unstripped kynar insulation, and it will *barely* fit if you tug on it.

So unless you're using 32ga or smaller wire, I don't know how useful this will be.

PM me if you're interested.

Due to a handicap I am unable to play games where you aim/look with the right thumbstick and move with the left thumbstick. Some games (like Halo, Timesplitters and Ghost Recon) allow you to switch the functions, some do not. rather than miss so many games I want to play, I am offering $50 to anyone who can make the mod for me. I need a southpaw controller made of the original Xbox control (the Duke). (NOT the S-TYPE)

What I mean is reversing the functions of the sticks so the right stick does the left stick function and vice versa.

I will pay $50, or a new game of your choice... plus the price of the controller.

If youre interested please IM me at mizzirf1  thanks.

u have to break the connecs on the circuit board, and jump them all to eachother. but the sticks arent lined up the same, so it will take a lil trial and error.

are you taliking about just switching the left thumsick with the right thumbstick and the right thumbstick with the left? Casue that would be too hard. Or are you talking about changing the directions that the thumbsticks go?

The actual physical sticks will not be touched or moved at all, just the functions they perform need to change (a much bigger job).

This is very possible, and i would be interested in helping out however I am extremely busy atm. This would be a good trial and error project with a broken or defective controler (nothing else really has to work, just the sticks).

It would be a matter of jumpering the 4 (IIRC) contacts for each stick to eachothers contacts then disabling the origional contacts (cutting the traces).

If nothing comes of this in 5 weeks, repost it and I should have some more time and will be able to see what I can do (I don't know how many layers the origional controlers pcb is, could be even harder (raising the sticks from their contacts so that the traces (internally) can remain intact.

If anyone does undertake this, pm me if you need any help.

I already desoldered the stick bases, so far. Tomorrow I have to get more wire so I can remap them and see if they will work.
My first thought was to make connections between the pins of that small chip, that I think regulates all signals in the controller,  but not having enough knowledge on what it does, I dropped my first plan. About just rewiring the connections, if it is to be done, than the original traces must be cut. That is the major problem. Tracing all the leads is actually quite troublesome, so that plan also falls off.
Anybody has any other ideas on how this might be done or have any info on that signal chip?

QUOTE (WireX @ Sep 27 2003, 06:50 AM)
I have a simple idea, but it depends on how the controlers are set up. If it is only a double sided pcb, then it is simple to cut/rewire any traces needed (I can't check as it is 12:40 and I only have stypes around me), however, if it is a 2 or 4 layer pcb (as I assume it is) then a little more crafty solution will have to be used.

My idea as it stands:

Lift the sticks from their traces. Get very fine wire (as small as you can get) and solder however many wires it is to the sticks pads) then insulate the traces and place the stick back down (may need some adhesive to stay into place).
If you do this for both sticks pads, along with the sticks themselves, it is only a matter of flipping the leads. You could even use a switch (based on the number of pads) so that the controler could be whatever the user wanted to choose.

The difficulty with this idea is to keep the control sticks in their origional position while keeping them away from the solder pads. I don't know what kind of clearance we are looking at, but I don't think it would be too hard to do.

That is what I am currently trying to do. Only on my experimental S type, to see if it works. My idea is to bend the pins that are responsible for controlling, bend them parrallel to the board, and insulate, so they don't touch the board. This would have to be done to both of them. And then do the rewiring as WireX described. The  thumbstickes would have to be raised maybe about 1mm from the original position though.

An interesting update. I managed to rewire the left thumbstick controls onto the right thumbstick. But I get interesting results while was testing it. First game - Halo, usually I use left thumbstick for up, down, left-right strafing movements and right thumbstick for looking around. Since I rewired only left thumbstick, theoretically I should be able only to move up, right , left and down, BUT the movements are reversed!!! Because if you notice, left thumbstick is positioned on PCB with the small button up, and right thumbstick is placed with that button down!!! So what this means, when I press up on the thumbstick Master Chief moves back! And when I press back he moves forward!!! But situation gets worse when I press left - right! Since I did it on my S controller as an experiment, I had to desolder the little motion thingy in order to remove the left trigger, so I could get to the pins of the left thumbstick. But situation gets worse with left-right movement. I usually use left trigger for jumping in Halo, since I removed it I should not have jumping at all, right? Wrong! When I press left, Master Chief TURNS (!) (Not strafes as he is supposed to!!!) left and down and jumps at the same time!!!!!! Same goes when I press right, only in other direction.
I will inspect my solder job again to see if I have any shortings, because that's probably why the looking+jumping thing comes up. But even if I have that fixed, I will need to reverse the pins, since just straight rewiring won't work.
Just thought I would tell you about my progress so far. I will try to post pics, but don't guarantee for sure.
Also, does anybody have a high-res pic of Original controller? i would like to see how the pins of thumbstick bases are located. I suppose they are also reversed.

God why not just make a new pcb (printed circut board) and take the old chip from the old pcb

pcb kits are easy to find

I can get one from fry's

someone should help the fello gamer out cuz not being able to play those great games is just  sad.gif sad

the xpads pcb board doesnt seem that much hard to remake with the modifications biggrin.gif

Oh and this could sell if these boards were made

I don't really think that that would be the easiest way to do it.
Why? Printed PCB costs about the same to manufacture as a new controller plus all those small components have to be resoldered again into new PCB and the main thing is that it has to be designed first!!!  The design has to be almost like M$ one, with modifcations made for specific purpose, and this would possible if only m$ released the schematics for their controllers! That way we could just modify the schematics how we need, but still manufacturing, soldering all components over ......I don't say that it is impossible to do, it's just very difficult and complex!!!

MS rep kinda sounded like a asshole...but heres what he said.

Question: Hi. I ran into someone who loves to play xbox, but he cant very much. He has nerve damage in his right hand. He is looking around for someone to help him make a controller that will work for him. Basically, he wants a 'southpaw' controller type. Would MS be able to help at all?

So I called up MS and asked them about getting a controller with the left and right thumbsticks reversed.  The rep said he didnt know know of a part number or anything that specific, but that he did think MS made them and that I should look into contacting a store that carries Video Games, Consoles, like Electronic Boutique, EB Games, etc.  I would think that the original poster Krevco has made a search of such places already, but since there are about 5 + stores not 2 miles down the road and its a Saturday, Ill go check them out and see what they say.  If they do, Ill let you know of anything I find, and prices, and even if the company would be interested in making a good name for themselves with a gaming coummunity by donating one of them , if they very well exsist.  Let ya know what I find out.

I know that there are no companies that put out a southpaw controller, BELIVE me, I searched my ass off. There are 2 companies that put out programmable controllers, but both have such poor analogue sticks that they are more harm than good. It's kind of like a sick tease. I had a guy take a look at this and he mentioned something about not having to do just the 4 ways and swap them, but about there being an extra 2 or something that had to have something done..I dont recall..

anyway..Im so happy to hear about the progress. Dont worry about rushing, It sounds like you are making insane progress already!!

Ya know, I am a hardcore gamer - HARDCORE. I post in multiple forums, I have thousands of posts. I read websites religously, I even attended E3 this year. It is the most heartbreaking thing for me to follow a videogame from announcement to release, only to not be able to enjoy it because of this controller obstacle. I have to read about people enjoying the game, all the glowing reviews, all that stuff. Some developers are thoughtful enough to include controller options, others unfortunately are not.

I have had the bad luck of being stuck with this horrible nerve condition, but now I might finally be able to play these games I have been pining for. I have been asking about this for well over a year from Teamxbox, to IGN, to Gamespot, to GamingAge. And you guys have cracked the case for me in a matter of days. I am speechless, and I am SO FUCKING grateful. This means so much to me that if you knew, you simply would not believe it.

I play a lot of video games as most teenagers do nowadays, I also spend a lot of time on the internet as most others do. I probably spend about a fourth of my time at the website http://forums.xbox-scene.com researching ideas for my xbox and playstation. I recently came upon an article about a man who had a severe nerve damage in his right hand who went by the alias 'krevco'. Even though he loved playing video games he couldnt due to his nerve condition. He decided to post an inquiry on the site asking somebody to modify a controller for him, not an easy task, for a mere 50 dollars. Amazingly people started posting right away and a user going by the alias Blind_Samurai started on the controller right away, soon tons of people jumped into help. The website Customxbox.net offered to donate a controller for free to help, people offered every idea they could think of, made every attempt necessary and spent hours of time making this controller for someone none of them knew nor had met in real life. The time that this project was proposed and executed is incredible to even fathom.

Allot of gamers have a bad reputation of being uncaring lazy anti-social slobs, but would an uncaring lazy antisocial slob that had no respect or care of the outside world except what existed inside of his 51 inch plasma flat screen do this. I can think of many instances where most people would shun this off because it would take to much work but these people actually stuck together to finish this project and I think that people need to realize this.

Topic location: http://forums.xbox-s...&t=107624&st=90

Thank you for taking the time to read this summary and please consider it for a possible article in the paper.

I await a response tomorrow morning. again mad props to blind_samurai and anyone else who helped out.

I've been following this thread since it started and was about to get out my tools when samurai got his working, anywho it's really great to see this kind of thing happening on this forum.

Usually i post here for a few weeks and maybe try to help some poeple out, then get flamed by someone i'm trying to help and leave for a while. Seeing this kind of thing happening reminds me that there's a whole lot more to these forums than pricks just 'using' the forums when they break something and never giving anything back.

QUOTE (WireX @ Sep 28 2003, 02:03 PM)
To all those who want to try this for the hell of it

why don't you try something really tricky. Lift the sticks, then solder wire going to a switch (would have to be one of those ones with like 6 contacts for each position) then solder wires to the sticks going to the switch.

You could have a convertable controler, and have a real purpose for it. This way any southpaws (I know a few who prefer it) will be able to use it the way they want, and other will be able to use it normally.

Now WireX has a good idea!!! Since the main objective of this topic has been accomplished, why don't we try to take on another challenge? I woud say definitely yes, this should be even more interesting........

Each thumbstick, when desoldered from the PCB has 10 legs, I tried to not solder all 10, but then controller gave me wrong controls, so I assume all 10 has to be in contact with the PCB. So how would it be possible to switch between them? First I think I have to tell the process of how reversing controls in detail, so people can do it also, and from there we think on.

1. I completely desoldered the thumbsticks using solder sucker for bug blobs and braid for small.
EDIT: I also put some electrical tape on where the thumbstick was to prevent the bent pins shorting something out.
2. I bent each thumbstick's legs 90* = they became parallel to the conroller PCB.
3. I cut 20 wires (If you don't have any good at hand, like I did,  IDE cable will do  laugh.gif ), and stripped both ends leaving about 5 mm of bare wire coming out.
4. Then I took each thumbstick and soldered the wires to each pin. NOTE: Separately from PCB, nothing was done to PCB at this time!!! Don't solder the 4 wires to the metal carcass in which the thumbstick resides, I think it is used for grounding and should not be bothered.

Here comes a little more complicated part, I will try to describe as in detail as I can, sorry if you get confused.

5. First I decided to wire left thumbstick to the right one. So all soldering was done from the back of PCB. That means the way I wired the thumbstick was mirrored. You know when you solder anything from the back, it has to be mirrored or you won't get the original results.
6. After that, the wire should've long enough for you to take and place the left thumbstick into the rightthumbstick's place, how to position it you will see by locations of the small button, but you have to put the thumbstick in reverse!!! Or othervise you controls will be all in reverse!
I will try to post pics later, to make it more clearer......

So far, for making a switch my idea was to use something like a rotary switch, but those are so big and bulky so I don't know which other to use...

Tis a great thing going here, but might I also suggest maybe lookng into why the game makers that dont have the option to switch controls couldnt be pursuaded into making it so for future games. I am sure there are other gamers out there that would gain something from this.  Maybe not to the degree Krevco will but it could be a great thing to do for other gamers. maybe a x-s petition or emails to the game makers whatever just a suggestion.  Again great job guys... wish I had come across this earlier so I could have participated.

switching ic. in my technical calss we used an ic which had 18 pins in total. 5 input, 10 output, 2 v+ and one ground. we wired a battery to 2 of the input pins and 2 led's to every 2 of the output pins. now if voltage was supplied to the one v+ pins it switched one diode on, if to the other the other switched on.

can't explain it well but there should be ic's with more than 5 inputs and 10 outputs. then only a really small switch is needed

Yes! That is exactly what is needed for switching purposes!!!
Could you research more on that issue? Like what's the correct name of that IC, than it would be pssible to contact electronic manufacturer's and find the right one, that would be awesome....

Ya know, thats what pisses me off the most!! I went to E3 this year. I SPECIFICALLY asked multiple devs if they would be supporting the southpaw option. I remember a clear conversation with the producer of Freedom Fighters, and he said he had heard my complaint from other gamers and would definitely be putting in the option.

He didnt.

I also talked to the Splinter Cell devs, Deus Ex 2, Thief 3, Far Cry, COnflict Desert Storm 2, Call of Duty, Men of Valor..and others. I asked them all about this issue. And all of them agreed that it is only a few hours work to program the keymaps and craete the menu options. Now I'm willing to bet only a handful of them go throught with it (Both Splinter Cell 1 and Desert Storm 1 did NOT offer the option).

I mean, Im not even a lefty..but I would assume there has to be some pissed off lefties out there somewhere.

AWESOME!! HaHA..while the last thing I ever ask for is attention, I think that upping the rep of gamers, especially the superstars on this board, is really a good thing. I hope it sees print and maybe shines a  light on this site. Well done!!

About the switching sticks option..you guys dont have to bother with including the functionality of switching it back to default. I have a few extras. But if you do it a sa side project, I'm sure it would be useful to some people. Maybe an item for sale on customxbox.net? I bet it would sell a few units. I sure would have bought 1  wink.gif

I just ordered Splinter Cell from EbGames!!!  I never thought I would be able to play it, and now it's on the way!!! HAHAHA!!111oneone

alright so we'll need an IC that can take input from up to 10 points and output them to another 10, and also change 10 completely different points at the same time, at the flip of a single switch.  I'm pretty sure this kind of IC does exist, but i'm not sure exactly what kind it is.  Blind_samurai did you find (as I did) that 6 of the 14 points seem to just be linked to GND?  I suppose that those 6 (or maybe just one of them, i'd have to make some measurements) can just be permanently grounded, and the other 8 are the only ones relevant to the function of the stick?  It's possible that only the 3 points on the 2 sides of the sticks are all that is relevant to directional movement.  My theory is that these 3 points measure the force in both the x and y directions (kind of like the triggers work in just one direction, it's the same premise).  I'm going to try and ground the sticks to a common GND point and see if the function remains the same.  I'll also test where the 2 points that i didn't mention lead.  All of this will have to wait until tomorrow, though, since it's late now and i need some sleep.

Edit: Exhaustion + Typing = Typos

Yes, mirx999 I have noticed that thing too!!! Most of the wires on the stick are ground! Today I am going to try it, and maybe it would be possible to use just a switch with 6 inputs & 6 outputs (or even less depending on results of testings!) for each thumbstick. Of course 2 of such switches would have to be used, but in that case no IC would be needed...Thanks for the note...

Scan-C keep us posted on that IC!!!

I see that you are talking about that IC,
I think its an USB HID Controller, like this one:
http://www.cypress.c.....d Peripherals

Some fit guys most be able to programm such a thing, but M$ uses some own protocolls.
I started a tread about this, but no response that time.

ot: is it possible to put the 4 Wires to the outside and plug them on a Aracade joystick?
I know the 4way work like the d-pad, but is there a way to switch between anaolog and digital on a selfmade arcade stick?

rolleyes.gif you fail to realize that even if they fit in each other's slots, their behavior will not change.  just switching them doesn't work.  the sticks have to be connected to one side of the PCB, and come out the hole on the opposite side.  it's not as simple as you think (though it IS pretty easy)

Hehe, seemed SO EASY to me at first, just solder here and that's it I thought, but ended with a shitload of wires insted..... laugh.gif ....but still works though......

Aite, you cover my ass from uptop, take out the terrorists as me and akindbro4u rush into the highway tunnel.  Cover our asses or we'll die, there's lots of terrorists in that level.  Then, you come down and rush in with us (get a good pistol though).  Yeah!

Does R6: RS support headset?

I would like to continue the project and see if we can make the reverse sticks when messing with the controller chip on the PCB or installing a switch to choose between reverse or normal......

Anybody interested in researching this matter farther?

Well when I first tried to solve this challenge, I directly resoldered contacts in the controller itself. I will set up a quick webpage to show the pics of early mods. The method I used required just soldering.....and you couldn't switch back to normal controls....plus there was a shitload of wires to stuff into the case......
What I try to do is maybe tinker with traces that come from the controller chip on the controller PCB and that way all that has to be done is just resolder traces.......
The second part is maybe making a switch to switch back to original controlls.....
I know the software part might sound tempting, but I don't know anything about coding and such.....

I'll try to post the website with pica ASAP just to show how I did it....

http://www.freewebs....controller.html

Well, that's how it came out.....not really pretty.....

Can you get some good closeup pics of the Circuit board around the sticks? (eventually I'll take mine apart again)

what we can use is simple tristate devices, or busswitches..... very easy to setup, shouldn't be too hard to create an IC for too.   One setting all 8-9 wires go to the right pad, next setting they go to the left. (and same for other pad).

To do it properly though, you'd have to cut traces, and then resolder to the existing traces, or resolder back on the IC's (a bit more challenging).

Sorry, but I those were the only pics I took while I experimented on my controller.... sad.gif
After that, I soldered everything back to normal.

What I was thinking at first just to reverse the controlls is to sacrifice my already veteran controller and trace where each trace (from the stick) goes to which pic on the chip on the back of the PCB. The idea for this method I got from this tutorial http://www.xbox-scen...a-connector.php
If to find the right pins, all that has to be done is lift up certain pins ( most likely 8) and rewire the traces under them. I think it would be much easier than all the wiring like before....

yeah, I'll agree thats the easiest way of doing it.

but if you want to make it reverseable (ie with a switch to go from normal to soutpaw) then I still think using a few tristating chips is the best way to go.
