Title: Shoutcast Expansion Poll
Post by: >lys< on October 10, 2004, 11:34:00 PM
Any comments?

I was just thinking today (sounds like bragging, I know). Our shoutcast support is rather cumbersome - I'd like to expand it a bit if there is any interest. Keep in mind we've also got tons of other things to code, like the .50 engine, proper UI toolkit, total rewrite of the entire Ava codebase...

By the way, this poll also covers REGULAR PLAYLIST SUPPORT in Avalaunch... So if you want a decent mp3 player with playlist support, please vote accordingly smile.gif

I use the Shoutcast feature almost exclusively while in the dash.   I like being able to switch between different stations.  For example, most of my stations are alt/modern rock and video game music stations (i.e. Gaming FM).  Two totally different types of stations, but I like them both.

The only thing I would like is being able to name the stations. Being able to select "Hard Rock 1" or "Techno 3" rather than seeing a bunch of numbers would make it much easier for those with lots of stations to be more organized. Other than that I think it works very well and a whole new UI player type thing isn't really needed.

I think the ability to bring up some sort of list of stations you have on your XBox and then choose which station to change to might be handy.  If you put more than a few stations on there is can get a bit annoying cycling through the stations... especially since Ava launch tends to lock up if you cycle too fast.  Right now you basically have to wait for one station to connect before cycling to the next.

Indeed an easier way to cycle through stations would be nice. However, there are things that other feel are more important:

- "Random" halts
- Fix the resizing and some locations for the rest of Avalaunch when in higher resolutions
- Eliminate the use for EvoX by adding some new features (ie: flashing and chip control)
- Clear out the Bug Report topic as much as you can

"Random" halts
These are being addressed, as we're currently rewriting the entire codebase. We're aiming for more a robust approach to all our classes in the reimplementation. For most of the code, this is the third rewrite.

Resizing
This won't be an issue. The current user interface was just a temporary debug interface. A new UI toolkit is under construction, and everything will resize neatly in the fabled .50 release smile.gif

Flashing/chip control
We have no plans to integrate these things into Avalaunch. You have specialized tools to do this for your chip anyway.

Bug report topic
We have our own internal bug tracker where all these bugs are registered. The topic here is just an easy entry point for bug reports from users. It is being cleared for each new release.

I hope this answers most of your questions. Serious posts deserve serious answers. smile.gif

lys, you're my new best friend.  smile.gif

I know you guys are working hard, I just like to bust your balls every once in a while. I'm told it builds character.  tongue.gif

Busting balls doesn't build character, only a great singing voice rotfl.gif

To tell you the truth, I had never used shoutcast or any other streaming music service until I discovered yours.  I run a recording studio, and most of my PC and/or MAC functions have been recording and mastering, updating, yadda yadda yadda.  I was extremely impressed with your implementation of this service in your dashboard.

Of course, like most others, I tried out XBMC and was blown away.  Obviously, we can't compare apples to oranges, because both AVA and XBMC have seperate functions (and NEITHER is a lemon).  However, I am willing to bet that a very small percentage of people exclusively use XBMC as a dashboard, the greater percentage falling with AVA or the competition.  XBMC makes a great multi-media application, but I still don't get the warm, comfortable, fuzzy, "welcome home" feeling that I get when AVA comes up!

So... I think that your challenge will be to keep the interface "style" while combining a slick, non-redundant approach to your shoutcast interface.  Personally, I would appreciate naming stations, having the station name displayed in the corner somewhere, and underneath, maybe a short scroller that lists off Song Name, Artist, and etc.  (ala XBMC, but simpler.)

Having modded 4 boxes now, but still reletively new to the scene, I appreciate the intense amount of work you folks put in to your interface, and am willing to wait for the continued quality I've come to expect and accept in your dashboard.

This might seem like a strange shoutcast feature request but:
could you make the music output be 2.0 pcm instead of the AC3 signal that avalaunch uses?
This is the way XBMC does it (PCM) and it sounds much better on my 5.1 system, since it can apply dolby pro logic to it (sound systems can't apply dolby prologic to AC3 signals, at least not mine).

I MUCH prefer avalaunch to XBMC but right now shoutcast sounds better on XBMC for the above reason (stereo versus room filling surround).

Weird, I know, PCM sounding better? In this case, yeah.

I think you better focus on the main parts of Ava instead of integrating things like DVD & MP3 players. It's beginning to look like windows this way which makes it only more complicated. It's a dashboard, not a Mediacenter. smile.gif

Its a shame we wont see this, as its a fairly popular opinion when you ask ava users what thay want. The flashing feature in evox makes it far easier when im tinkering with my bios and on the older chips they didnt have all this nice new usb malarkey :|. Would be nice if i could ditch evox once and for all.

I know I voted, but strengthen your existing codebase before expanding into other things especially with the fact of your being able to use XBMC and other tools to do what you want otherwise.

That is unless you wish to supplant XBMC and any other tool .

Ava + Shoutcast is a true joy. I use the Shoutcast feature playing in the background almost as much as I actually play games.  I typically only listen to one or two stations, so the current way that it works is find by me. In fact, I was quite tickled to find out that the play button on my newly purchased DVD/Dongle remote cycles between the stations. Beautiful.

My only complaint, though, is that there is no song information! Extremely frustrating. I'd much prefer a way to display the artist/title/channel. Especially the artist/title. XBMC shows this info (even though I have yet to find a skin I like for XBMC that shows this info nicely).

The previous comment about pcm vs. AC3 is worth noting too. I'm not there yet, but eventually I'll be playing through my receiver, so the surround quality will be an issue. For now, though, the Shoutcast song and artist titles are my biggest wish for  the mythical .5

also on a side note:... it would be nice to be able to configure stuff in the dash on the fly instead of having to edit the avalaunch.xml file ... this might be alot to ask i aint sure but it sure would be a nice feature and a feature i would like to see near or at the top of the list to do ... cause me personally i would rather have this feature over support for mp3/shoutcast stuff.

thanks for your time and keep up the good work wink.gif

I like it, and use it... but the truth is... overall I am just not in the dash long enough to listen to a lot of music.

Currently if I want music or shoutcast I jump into XBMC anyway so I voted focus on .50 instead. I'm contemplating running XBMC as my dash actually. The Project Mayhem III on the latest CVS is really nice.
