It's a very cool feature and I've downloaded most demos so far.  Was kind of tempted to buy Marble Blast Ultra, but TBH I'd rather pay for and play full Xbox titles.  Besides I have Mame on my PC and Xbox1 to play this kind of stuff for free...

I think you should add the option, "It's OK, but I've only bought Geometry Wars." or something to that effect.  If they ever add the old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from the Genesis/Super Nintendo era, I'll be all over that though.  And maybe some Street Fighter.

Edit: Misspelling...

I think it's great in concept but can be and will be much better in 6-12 months.

And yes, I have bought a couple games, but to be honest I lost interest in them quick.

I think there should have been an option "It's okay and I have bought a game or two but it could be better."

Than again... As I already said.... It will be better. Much better. Forget SF2, I can't wait for Ultimate Mortal Kombat!

I've had my 360 since day one and I just bought my first games on there this weekend.  I bought Uno, Geometry Wars and I got a code off ebay for Bankshot Billiards 2 for $5.  All the other games are not worth the price they want for them.  If all were $5 I would probably buy Marble Blast as well.  Uno is fun, simple and keeps you occupied for hours.  I'd probably like GW if I were better at but for $5 it's not bad.  Bankshot is pretty cool too, but not worth the $15 they want for it.

I'll buy Lumines when it comes out unless the want like $50 for it.

XBLA is unreal, I just hope MS raise their 50MB limit so companies like SNK would be more keen to come on board and release their games.  Hell we could even get Daytona on there if they raised the max to their upcoming MU size of 256MB.

I love it! I read that 100 MS points equals 88 cents. So game that cost 800 MS points is about $7.04. I don't think that is too high. If they keep the games at that price I don't have a problem getting them. I have MAME and the other EMUS on my XOBX1 but I find myself getting more enjoyment out of my 360. I really like the HI DEF upgrades and the SWEET sound that the 360 produces for these games.

I have paid for geometry wars, uno (happily), wik (just for the multiplayer, which i never play (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) ) and smash tv (accidentally, my finger slipped, literally! but its fun with a friend so thats ok).

Uno is so fun. You can play for hours without noticing. What else is cool about it, is CHICKS! The first few nights i had the game, i played at least 1 chick a night. It was great, good to c the women getting into games! It seems to have died down now though, the game is losing its hype unfortunately.

My score in GW is 558k, i got it kinda randomly, no lead up, just did really well one day, now i can get 400k max.

But yeah, XBLA is awesome and can't wait to c it grow. I'd love to see jump n bump. It'd be perfect, as anyone who has played the game would know. If you don't know about it, google it, get it. It'd be sooooo perfect!

Just send MS' arcade department my idea. It has to be done, its just such a mad game.

I thought is was interesting, for about 5 minutes.  Not my type of game - that's how I could not buy it smile.gif  Marble Blast Ultra on the other hand was awesome!

I agree... For those who didn't notice, this person is stating that Geometry Wars was only interesting for about 5 minutes to them. Some people might not get that by the way the quote is below the post.

Anyway, like I said I agree. I don't know why everyone says Geometry Wars is a must-buy. Nothing is a must-buy because nothing is everyone's "cup of tea" shall we say. I didn't care much at all for Geomotry Wars, either, because it's just not my flavor.

I can still recognize that it's a good game, and I have to admit, all the 2D graphics and particle effects look wonderful in HD, but I've never liked those types of games.

I've bought Guantlet, Smash TV, Marble Blast Ultra (though haven't had an urge to play it since the day after I bought it -- or something like that), Uno, Bejeweled 2... I think that's it. If I could, I'd sell MBU and B2 to some other XBL player for 1/2 their points each, but unfortunately MS won't let us do that.

I understand why they won't, but it sucks. It's for the same reason, really, that no games on the Arcade are free -- it's because the developers of them need money! If I remember correctly, MS charges you/your dev team $10,000 or something to make a game and submit it for their review to be sold on the Live Arcade (an OXM issue maybe 3-6 months ago said the exact figure and $10,000 is what I recall). So obviously, they won't make money if the only copies of their Live Arcade games being sold are used ones.

Peter Moore was asked in a post-E3 interview (the video has been posted by Team-Xbox and such) in some 'snack room' (a very unprofessional area) a ton of questions - one of which was "What if I am done playing one of my Live Arcade games and will never play it again and want to sell it and my rights to it to another person on Live arcade and/or give it to a friend or a family member via Live.... Why can't I do that and will you be looking into that down the road?"

Peter Moore was stunned at the question and after a pretty long pause said that it was a very good question and that it would make sense for us to be able to sell one of the games we've bought off the Live Arcade but unfortunately the logistics and such would make it very complicated and he doesn't foresee us ever being able to do that.

Well I don't know about you guys, but if I can't sell it, I better be able to bring it onto my next Xbox console. I was pissed when I couldn't transfer Xbox Live 1 Arcade games I had bought onto my Xbox 360! I mean, why not?

Oh well... At least I have enough money to where this really isn't an issue for me anyway.

Where did you get the idea that MS charges developers to do games for Arcade? They don't charge devs to do games, they PAY devs to do games. But they are very choosy about what games they will allow on the system.

I have a buddy doing a game for Arcade and he told me that they do things in different ways, but basically its like any publisher. For games that MS publishes (Uno, Geo Wars, etc...) they pay for the development. If it is from another publisher (like Popcap, for example) that publisher pays for the development.

But MS doesn't charge to put content on the service.

Of course the games aren't free -- they cost money to develop, whether MS is paying or the developer is paying. You need to pay for office space, computers, net access, tools, dev kits, salaries, etc... These games are a LOT cheaper to make than something like Oblivion, but they still get made by people who have bills to pay and noone works as hard as it takes to make a good game for free.

As to not being able to re-sell Arcade titles, why should you be able to? You can't re-sell downloaded music from iTunes, or any downloaded games on the Web. Every single Arcade title has a free trial mode so you don't ever have to buy anything without trying it first. If you try it and don't like it, don't buy.

They charge for the certification process... basically that is there so random joe's off the street don't submit 100s of random things. So if you submit something you're SERIOUS about it and feel that it has at least the potential to make that much money.

ROFL. As I said in my post, an OXM article from about 3-6 months ago was talking about how for $10,000 you can make your own Live Arcade game. My figure may be wrong as it strictly from memory, but it said any person in the world can make a game for Live Arcade -- All they have to do is pay MS the money for the toolset and what goes along with the process (MS hosting it on their servers, their bandwidth / MS handing the transactions of credit cards / MS certifying the game / Etc.). This is all according to the article, not me.

Basically it was saying to me, the reader, and/or you, the reader that if you want to make a Live Arcade game, you can. Not only that, MS encourages it. However, you do have to come up with a small amount of dough (again I think it was $10,000) to give to the big M$. This doesn't even guarantee that your game will make it on Arcade - this just means they will provide you with the necessary tools, again, according to the article. It's *you* who has to make the game, a good game at that, too, and a secure one -- MS will not certify your Live Arcade title if it's incredibly lame in their eyes (unlike Sony -- the PS1 had over 2,000 titles -- 80% of which weren't even worth looking at for most anyone).

The article talks about how MS encourages this not only so that they can make more money by offering more games in the Live Arcade, but because of one main factor: The high development costs of making a game these days are insane -- millions of dollars, and yet 9 out of every 10 console games released fail to make a profit once everything is said and done -- licenses are paid to the console manufacturer, legal fees, employee wages, marketing, manufacturing, etc). The article discussed how back in the Atari and NES days, if you had a PC and an imagination, you could single-handedly make your own game and MS wants to make this an affordable thing to do again!

So there's your answer.

Sure, YOU get paid if you make a game for Live Arcade and it gets put up -- but you won't get 100% of the profits.

****** On a side note I want to say I don't know why big companies like EA aren't taking better advantage of the new capabilities of live. Madden 2006, for example -- all of the achievment points could be gained within hours. Also, why not come out with a ton more Themes and GamerPictures to sell - No, I'm not saying we need more for every sports team, but EA could easilly do this for any IP (Intellectual Property) they have, such as Medal of Honor. With the new Airborne game coming out for that series, they should already be offering themes and gamerpictures for it - they could make more money I'd imagine by doing it sooner rather than later - especially if a game that has a lot of hype ends up being a boring, dull game. I also hope they REALLY start to take advantage of the Achievments. The best company to take advantage of the Marketplace and Achievments, to this date, imo, is the dev. team behind PGR3 (bizaar or whatever it is, I forget).

I think it is a really cool option. I have picked up several of the games and pulled down a couple demos. After the next update I will be getting more demos.

So far I purchased..

Geometry Wars (hardcore and very hard for me)
Hardwood Spades (very hardcore)
Uno (just loads of fun)
Feeding Frenzy (That fish game, actually pretty difficult)

I am sure I will be getting Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. They could charge $30 bucks for Street Fighter and I would cop that with out a thought!

give me street fighter or mortal kombat, something worth the over hundred or two spent on the franchise, and i might be willing to dish out another $10 or so for the online capabilities... cant wait to kick some of your asses.

i see the future!

do you just not read the front page of xbox-scene?  they have a big competition thing going on right now to create your own xbla games.  They provide the tools and tutorials and alot of other stuff for free and whoever wins it gets a big entertainment setup or somethin

and xbox live has/had arcade?  I never had it so I don't know, I thought it was a xbox 360 thing.  Crazy, learn something new everyday   happy.gif

Its cool, but I don't like the fact that we have to buy them. I wish we could accumulate points through playing games, and just time spent on the console would give you a few points here and there. I feel like MS is trying to squeeze too many bucks outta me. I havent even purchased a game though, so I can't say how much of a cost it is. But I just know I would like there to be other ways. Like tournaments or something, more xblive matches you win, you could score some points, etc.

I like all the demo's they release for free. Thats pretty damn cool of MS to do for us. However, they should keep up to date with the trailers, and does anyoen else notice it takes forever to download any of the hd trailers, or games for that matter. I havent even downloaded a game yet, its just rediculous. I cant wait to download in the background. hd content is gonna bog down the net ... tongue.gif

edit::
I'm only on my free month of xblive, and I don't know if I'll sign on for gold after, only because, playing games is not too important to me. Sometimes its near impossible to find a match online for a game anyways... so its pretty dissapointing in that respect. Also, its pretty bad that they haven't updaetd the compatibility list in a long while... I wanted to play ESPN NHL 2K5 the other day, and it wouldnt let me .... I upgraded and than it told me incompatible... like... what gives MS... your a bunch of assholes for that one! I'd like to see some more games added to taht list soon... fack.. im actualyl quite pissed at m$ now... The other thing, once you buy an XBA game, if you delete it, can you download it again for free?

They're the best games on the system so far :D

Not counting, perhaps, Oblivion and Ghost Recon 3...

I'm looking forwards to more great and cheap Live Arcade offerings, Lumines should be good at least. Buying them is easy, maybe even TOO easy (just how far did MS go securing the credit card data and everything? It is a one-two-bought -procedure...).

Although sadly my 360 just departed for germany for repairs, so no Geometry Wars or Zuma for a while. I really, really hope MS gets it fixed soon.

I agree with you!!  If they put 1 and 2 on here for XBA, it would be great.  I'd buy both of them.  I'm a big fan of Geometry wars, and Kudos to BillyBlaze for hitting over 101 million.  It's only a matter of time until K4RN4GE comes back over the top.  I can't even score 1 million, but yet I'm still addicted to Geo Wars.  I can hit 500K almost every time.  My highest score is 644K.  I think I'm in 13,800th place on the leaderboards.  I'm off to play it now smile.gif

XBLA is one of the most integral portions of the 360 for MS.

In fact, the industry is starting to pay A LOT attention to these new revenue streams, because for them, in many cases, it is equivalent to found money.

They know they aren’t cannibalizing on their mainstream business, but at the same time, they're able to nickel and dime a little extra from the hardcore gamer in many cases, and in other cases, they are attracting a fresh demographic, the "up-until-now" disinterested gamer.

I was at e3 this year and there were more than one workshop about attacking the "casual games" market.  "Sieze the minute".     smile.gif

Look for it to expand heavily in the next 3-5 years.   Considerably.

Just my 2c    happy.gif

yeah, the arcade is bringing a hell of a lot of new gamers to the xbox. in the ps vs xbox war, it will make a huge difference. i know of a lot of people who have a 360 mainly for the arcade games, and i know a shit load more who will get a 360 after the first time the price drops, just for arcades

if sony doesnt have a system like this, then i can see a lot of 'casual gamers' switching from playstation to xbox simply for the comvience of being able to download games

I've only purchased Uno and Geometry Wars which were both $5. I would have purchased some other games if they were $5 instead of $10 like Zuma for example.

I've been very happy with Uno, the online multiplayer mode is excellent. I think Geo Wars would have been better if there was a multiplayer online mode like Mutant Storm.

Hexic came with my hdd and I\'ve purchased Uno and Zuma.  i like Uno a good deal, and i liked Zuma the game and thats why i bought it, but it\'s kind of combersome on the 360, and difficult to \"get good\" at just cause of the whole controller setup.

Just thought I'd point out that "I could care less" suggests that there are other options which you would care less about, so the correct way of saying it should be "I couldn't care less."

I have paid for geometry wars, uno (happily), wik (just for the multiplayer, which i never play sad.gif ) and smash tv (accidentally, my finger slipped, literally! but its fun with a friend so thats ok).

Could be made with xbx1 easily ( SDL )

sorry if this has been posted already ( can't be fecked to read 5 pages of opinions on a poll) but doesn't the fact that around 700 people don't know what arcade is demonstrate something about the intellectual decline of this site? No offense, just a thought.

Well... not necessarily. That just shows that either lots of people are trying to be funny by picking that option or that lots of people actually have never seen or played an xbox 360 ever before therefore not knowing what the xbox live arcade is. Because how else would people realy know exactly what it is?

meh, just a thought.

Edit: and yes... please, new poll??

i initially got the impression that M$ where going to release full xbox360 titles on live marketplace (full game downloads like Ghost recon:AW and PGR) shame they haven't. is this because of hard drive transfering etc?

Shouldn't it be "I couldn't care less"? If you "could care less" then you care about it. Right?

ive always thought that. I have a couple friends that say that, and everytime i just want to punch them in the face and scream "SAY IT RIGHT MORON" at them...but i don't, they would probably get upset.

this guy said it best... marble blast ultra has kept me from regretting to purchase my 360

and i think he means more real games not arcade games. I've been pretty dissapointed by the 360 lineup thus far.

Hahaha, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who gets annoyed when somebody uses it incorrectly. I've made it my mission to correct everybody who misuses it and they get annoyed at me.

I think it's great!

Especially for the wife factor.  Since she doesn't LIKE to sit an play lengthy intense games that require tons of time and a high level of coordination to master.  Or, just for those nights you're just too lazy to bust out a can of whoop ass and still need something to pass the time.  It WOULD be nice if they were a bit cheaper, or if MS decided to offer a freebie every now and then (since I'm a cheap ass, and all.)
