The 120GB 7200RPM Maxtor Drive at BestBuy last week and CompUSA this week for 99 after rebate is lockable.   The model number is L01J100.  It is marketed as a 100GB drive with 20GB free.  I believe it is actually a L01J120 inside the box.

This is the drive kit that I bought from BestBuy ($85 after MIR, 10% discount and taxes).  This drive is fast, quiet and lockable.  No overheating problems whatsoever, it actually runs pretty cool just like the original 8GB WD.

The L01J100 is the kit number but the actual drive model# is 6Y120L0.

phew, i think this is the drive that i got biggrin.gif

Since I haven't been able to find a complete list of harddisks and the ability to lock them I think it's a good idea to compile a list so that if someone wants to buy a new hd he/she knows what will / won't lock and won't lose money by buying a hd and find out by trying.

Please reply to this message with the Brand, ModelNumber, Size, RPM, Buffersize and Lockability of your harddisk.

My hd is

Maxtor, 4D080H4. 80Gb, 5400, 2Mb, not lockable (tried with ConfigMagic)

Isn't a 7200RPM 8MB Cache drive special edition? Don't think they exist w/out that title. All 8MB drives are labeled JB (J for 8mb cahce, B for 7200RPM). WD1200BB is a non-special edition 2mb cache.

BTW, my friend just bought a WD1200JB and it wouldn't lock. Fun stuff sad.gif

From what I gather the WD SE 120gb OEM drives don't lock (some people claim to have locked it but most say it can' t be done), but the boxed, retail WD SE drive appears to be OK.  Don't hold me to that, but it's what I gather from about a month's worth of research (not actually tested though).

Just bought a Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 120Gb 7200rpm 8mb Cache ATA133 Hard Drive - OEM (6Y120P0) and I understand it DOES lock.  Will confirm on arrival and installation.

Cheers,

-Steve.

Sorry to spoil the great list of drives on this post, but I have to confess something really stupid.
(and I know I am going to regret asking this) but what does it matter if a drive locks or not? When you say 'lockable', what does this mean? The reason I am asking these stupid questions, is I was thinking of putting a bigger HDD in my xbox, but havent got a clue where to start! Can it be a standard HDD that would normally go in a pc, and if so, does it have to be formatted in any particular way(before or after it is fitted)? Any help here, or directions to a tutorial on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

The L01J100 is the kit number but the actual drive model# is 6Y120L0.

i bought the same one this week from compusa 120 - 40 mail in rebate which is 80+tax. very nice
but inside my package came the 6Y120P0 which is an 8mb cache version  :D
and as reported before it is lockable

Got a couple of collegues, that say a drive beyond 130GB, will not work in an XBox. Is this true?

uhh.gif
They also say, that you should take a 5400 rpm drive, as 7200 will overheat. Is this true?

As for the answers to the two questions above, if you feel to answering, could you explain what the right answer is and why?

Tnx,

Your first question:

I have a Maxtor DiamondMax 9 Model 160GB 6Y160L0 which works fine in my xBox. Perhaps the limitation indicated by your colleagues is the 137GB barrier present in the IDE controller. Ie. My 160GB drive, reports as 137GB. This is a known issue.

2nd Question:

I have no heating problems with the above drive, and it is a 7200 RPM version. This is not true when it applies to myself and my HD. But other HDs may give off more heat then others.
Hope this helps.

Now - on to the original topic -

Maxtor DiamondMax 9 Model 160GB 6Y160L0 w/2M Cache - LOCKABLE!

Absolutely it helped. It solved my contemplation whether I should get a certain amount of time invested to get a 5400 rpm drive the size of 120GB. Which I do not intend to do now.

Next week I will get an Xbox. Now I know what it will cost me. Still not really sure about the Mod chip.....X2 or Matrix.

Thanks!

This drive has been locked by Wasteil, dz1 and others.

Perhaps I am doing something wrong?  I originally prepared the hard drive using Slayer's 2.0 (didn't try to lock it at that time).  I recently decided to update it to Slayer's 2.1.  I copied all the info off the HD, used new install option on Slayer's menu, rather than upgrading, and copied games, etc. back on HD.  Everything works fine.  I tried using Config Magic to lock the HD, but no luck.  I tried using HDLOCK.EXE, but got a single minus sign under the S, which supposedly indicates not an ATA66 or better HD, etc.

Any opinions, or suggestions?

I have a question on the Maxtor 6Y120P0.  I just bought a bare drive, meaning no cables or software.  Are these things necessary when attempting to lock your drive.  I guessing all you need is the drive.  Thanks for the info in advance.

I have a Maxtor 4R120L0 (OEM).  I have been unable to lock this drive.  ATAPWD says that it doesn't support ATA-security.  I've tried it on _several_ computers with different models and brands of motherboards.  I've also tried locking it with Config Magic.  Config Magic also tells me that the drive does not support locking.  Has anyone been able to get this drive to lock.  If so, how?  Is there a problem with locking OEM drives that does not exist with retail drives.  I was under the assumption that they are the same hardware with a different label.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

As far as i know and have ever seen the only differance between OEM and retail is the packaging. And try using ConfigMagic Final, and not one of the older versions, you might have better luck.

You could try...

Maxtor 4R120L0
Samsung SV1204H
WesternDigital WD1200AB

Those 3 are all 120GB and 5400RPM.

Or you can keep checking this harddrive list website someone made from this board, its pretty good and im pretty sure it gets updated as new information comes to light thats not in the list.

2.) IF it is the drive that matters, stay away from MAXTOR... i dont know if it seems like it to you, but a lot of them claim to be "unlockable"   rolleyes.gif

3.) For god sakes, get a 7200 rpm drive... there is no point to search for a 5400. They are becoming hard to find, and besides, there's no point.  I dont think anyone with a 7200 rpm(there are lots of us) has had any problem with overheating.  wink.gif

4.) Western Digital RULES!  Have always used them, always will... No problems with anything EVER.  biggrin.gif

By the way, my WD1200JB (7200rpm 8mb cashe) locked on the first try.  Maybe my first hunch was wrong, and I did just have a "hit," but that seems strange to me.  dry.gif

I would just stay away from OEM drives.

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. When an item is an OEM version, it means that the item is sent to where it's being sold without logo-branded packaging, and may contain less documentation and software than the retail version.

There is no differance in hardware at all, you just save yourself a few ยฃยฃยฃ's from not getting a fancy box and maybe a driver CD, Cable or Manuals. But as we're talking HDDs none of those things matter.

Sorry I know its off topic, but I laughed at this. Like a manufacturer will support you in installing their drive in an XBOX ;-)

the support is here always the same because our local rights say so.
btw. you have anyways at first to go to your dealer where you bought the drive
(in german you have 2 years of guarante from your dealer, even if the manufacturer
gives only 1 year !)

have fun  biggrin.gif

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

btw. for those with "?" at their post ...

just send me the full specs (rpm, buffer, program, size and especially the FULL MODEL type
(wrong: ibm desktar 75 ... right: ibm dtla 307075 i.e.) as

FORUM PM --> NOT HERE AT THE FORUM AGAIN PLEASE !!! THANKS !!!

and i will update the list ...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i will also update the list when specs are missing but the model type is avaible,
but only when i've got time to look at the manufacturer pages some time

green = specs complete
yellow = program missing

Whoever said that a JB may not lock because it is run off the Hard Drive may be right, accessing data from the hard drive and locking it at the same time may be a cause for them locking, If all slayers installer people lockking the 1200JB did it off the CD (as is the case for the slayers installer, in fact it does not copy configmagic to the hard drive when installing)

IBM 180GXP 61.4GB UDMA100 - OEM (HD-009-IB)
IBM's latest generation 180GXP 60.4GB hard drive has a 2MB cache for enhanced performance.

- Rotational Speed - 7200 RPM
- Interface standard - ATA-6
- Average seek time - 8.5 ms

Just swaded through the list and the 15 pages and it's either there orjust missed it (skim reading tongue.gif), anyone know if this drive can be locked.

By the looks of this I reckon all IBM drives can be locked looking at that data sheet and wading through the 15 pages.

Hitachi Deskstar 120GB (model IC35L120AVV207-1) ATA100 7200RPM Hard Drive w/8MB cache.

Locked successfully using Config Magic Final.

This drive is identical with the IBM Deskstar 180GXP 120GB as Hitachi has taken over IBM's desktop HD Business. Hence all IBM Deskstar's are shipping now as Hitachi Deskstar's.

The "-1" at the end of the model number signifies an 8mb cache model which are only available in 120 & 180Gb flavors. The 2Mb cache versions should also be lockable.

Samsung drives are nice and quiet and don't run that hot (very similar to Seagate drives in noise levels, but Seagates tend to run pretty hot).

FYI for everyone, it's not called "Lockability" it's called "ATA Security Mode"

Like I said last time, "lockability" is a perfectly acceptable casual term we use.  Tell you what, next time you say your hard drive is IDE I'll correct you and point out that technically it's ATA, not IDE.

Maxtor 160GB 7200RPM HDD - locks like a champ with ConfigMagic (noticed that a previous post said that it was NOT lockable).  Runs quiet and usually you can find GREAT deals on them at Staples.  Found mine for $69 at Staples.com BRAND NEW, that's cheaper than most 60GB or 80GB HDDs.  Staples processed and shipped the drive the same day I ordered it (back in June, 2003).

Seagate 80 GB 7200 RPM 2mb(i think 2mb) - LOCKED EASILY WITH CONFIGMAGIC!

Here is some things to know for people in search of a hard drive for their xbox and things from my experience. Ok, so I saw this awesome deal at Fry's Electronics here, a Maxtor 120 GB 7200 RPM 8MB cache for $80 after rebate!!! I was like "WHOA!" and got it. So now with all my hard drives i have a maxtor 60 GB ata 133, seagate 80 gb ata 100, and maxtor 120 GB ata 133. I realized that this maxtor was just too good for my xbox and i don't have many games for xbox so i don't have a use for a big hard drive. but the 120 was extremely hot when i was formatting it and the seagate stayed cool all the way through. I suggest this drive and probably seagates to anyone for an xbox.

QUOTE (rkat @ Aug 31 2003, 05:29 AM)
Short info: Samsung SpinPoint SP0802N not lockable
(seems so)

detailed:
I used an unmodded xbox, installed (using hdd swap) Linux first and got the hdd-password. Also installed one of these "standard" xbox hack dashboards (after restoring the original xbox-hdd content, again using hdd swap) and created the "backup", which gave me the exact same hdd-password. Connected the xbox-hdd again to a pc. "UnlockX" told me the xbox-hdd was lockable/locked (no surprise). Unlocking with the obtained password worked. Then locked it again. It still works in the xbox as intended, so everything is ok. I duplicted the content of the original xbox-hdd image to the SP0802N hdd and run UnlockX. It told me this drive was not lockable. Using atapwd I set a master-password (just in case something went wrong to be able to get rid of the user-password and the content of the samsung-hdd, highly recommended!). Back to UnlockX, which again told me the samsung-hdd was not lockable. Anyway, I set the obtained password (using UnlockX). Atapwd recognized the user-password was set. After a reboot the drive was locked (as expected.) I could unlock it again with UnlockX (which told me the drive was unlockable). Then I locked it again and replaced the xbox-hdd with this locked samsung-hdd. Unfortunatley the xbox seemed to agree with UnlockX and did not accept this harddisk. (Showed the error very early after switching on the xbox, which - as far as I remember - indeed means hdd could not be unlocked.) I tried this procedure a few times more, locking the samsung drive with hddlock, too, but never had any success making the samsung-hdd work in the xbox.
After reading about config-magic, I'm tempted to try this, too (have to get it first). However since UnlockX seemes to be right about the "hdd is not lockable", I asume it's right.
So it's interesting to see, that a hdd can be locked but it still lacks a feature that tells that it really does support locking (which prevents it's use in the xbox).
Haven't checked the complete ata-reference again for a possible reason of this (and could not find the source code for UnlockX, which could give a hint why it recoginzes a hdd as unlackable.)

I'ld love to read what you think about this.

im not even going to bother readin this....lol laugh.gif

Official email from Western Digital:

Question:
This [Western Digital 120GB Special Edition] paticular hard drive is hit-and-miss on whether or not it can be locked. I have locked western digital drives, but this one is "not lockable". However, there are other people with this drive that are able to lock it. These drives must be shipping with slightly different firmware versions. Is there a way I could update the firmware on this drive to enable locking? Thank you.

Answer:
All of our drives follow ATA security features and are lockable. It is up to the software that you are using to recognize it in order to lock it. We do not recommend that you do this nor can we support you in doing so. Many times, the software will fail to unlock the drive once it is lock if something goes wrong.

Is there a lockable drive list with possible SKU numbers?

How do people like the 5400 RPM Maxtor 300GB drive?  I always wonder the longevity of the slower drives?  Think 7200 have better components less the Cashe?  Like heads parking/retracting?  Wish Gartner group or consumer reports had a case study.

I have had one drive go bad on me and it was less than 4 months Maxtor 120GB 7200 8MB cashe.

SKU numbers are generally specific to one specific store.   Two different stores would usually not use the same SKU number.

Perhaps you meant UPC numbers?  Or maybe exact model number?

Western Digital WD2000 (200GB)
7200 RPM w/8MB cache
Model WD2000JB-75DUA0.....does not support locking.

Used Configmagic,HDLock, and UnlockX,all report the same thing....Drive does not support locking.
This appears to be related to Special Edition drives with 8MB cache since I have not yet run across a WD drive with 2MB cache that wouldn't lock. The SE's seem to be hit or miss as to whether they will lock.So stay away from the WD's with "JB" in the model number.

They said if we are having trouble getting one to lock, we should contact our software support.

To SNAAAKE:

You need either a modchip or exploit to use any programs or dashboards not made by MS.  When you say "online", I assume you mean "XBOX LIVE".

You CANNOT use XBOX-LIVE with a modchip or exploit or a different dashboard.  Try it and they ban your XBOX.  (If you have these, disable them before connecting to LIVE)

If you mean XBConnect instead of LIVE, then YES, you can use whatever dashboard you want to (if you have the chip/bios or exploit)

It's not even an issue of whether the software is compatible.  The software asks the drive if it is lockable.  The drive says "no".

It's not the software saying the drive can not be locked, it is the drive saying the drive cannot be locked.

The software will go ahead and send the lock commands to the drive, even though it does no good because the drive won't accept lock commands period - regardless of the software.

This is a case of false advertising.  Their website clearly states that all their drives are fully ata compliant and fully supports locking.  The tech support says the exact same thing as well.

There are probably tons of people who don't know much of anything about computers, and the techs are bombarded with stupid questions.  How do I install a hard drive?  How do I install Windows?  How can I connect the hard drive to my microwave?

They probably assume that all people are like this, because 90% are.  So, they give everyone a "canned" response about how "their drives work fine, you need to contact your computer specialist."

Hi, can someone tell me if I can get my modchip out, lock my HDD and it would still work?(Boot to exox and everything...)

You cannot take out your modchip and still use evox unless you are using one of the font/audio/gamesave exploits, which you are probably not using because you have a modchip.

Without a modchip/exploit, you can only use programs endorsed by MS for use on the xbox with the original discs only.

So the answer to your question is NO!

WOW! That will hold a LOT of "goodies"!

Too bad about not locking.

I bet the XBOX is probably the only device in the whole world that requires a locked hard drive to operate without modification.  blink.gif

Is there a PC tool that will confirm lockability?

I have 4 x WDC 120GB (8MB) SE hard discs (2 older, 2 newer) and I'd prefer to check them before formatting.

Is that possible? Many thanks

Never mind, read the FAQ:

Hello,

Just installed a new drive and it locked fine in ConfigMagic Final.  The drive is a:

Maxtor Ultra Series 120GB
Kit#:  L04P120
Drive#: 6Y120P0
7200RPM, 8MB Buffer, UATA133

beerchug.gif

is this the same drive best buy has for $139 - $60 in rebates?  (L01P120)
I went all over Maxtor checking out the site, and what I got was this is the same drive as L04P120 - forget about getting any info on lockability! smile.gif
UPDATE:  I shelled out the cash ($139 - $20 more than my xbox!) and bought the drive/kit - turns out it does in fact have the 6Y120P0 drive that has been confirmed to lock (many times in this thread) so after $60  in rebates, you have yourself a shiny new 8 meg cache 120 gig drive!  (got it at bestbuy)

I've locked 5 different WD SE 120GB 7200RPM 8Mb, All with config magic.  All of which were purchased with in the last six months.  I'm not saying that who ever has tried and could not get theirs to lock is just doing it wrong, but that I've had pretty good luck with the ones that I've come in contact with.  Has anyone found a constant pattern or guide to why some of these drives lock and some don't?

Maxtor Diamondmax Plus9 120Gb, 7200rpm, 8Mb cache locks fine.

Also, for those running Maxtor drives, there's a util you can download from maxtor (setacm.exe I think) that lets you make the drive a lot quieter. I can't hear mine at all now, whereas before the head seeks were pretty loud!

More good news,

Maxtor 6Y250P0 250GB 7200RPM 8MB ATA133 is Lockable.

This is the drive I mentioned in the kit earlier...  CM Final reports it as a 6Y250P0, but Maxtor says it is a 7y250p0, so YMMV.

It is also SUPER quiet.  The xbox fan seems to be louder than it is.

As a bonus, this drive also comes with a FREE ATA133 PCI card for your PC.

Howdy,
I recently contacted a Maxtor Tech Representitive and asked the following question:

"Could you tell me if the Maxtor 4W060H4 is "lockable" (ATA Security Mode)?"

He then responded:

"Any of our drives are "lockable" as far as using a DOS command or thru the operating system. "

So I guess the Maxtor 536DX 4W060H4 is "Lockable."

If I am wrong given the Tech Reps. response, let me know.

Thanks,

My dad and  i have locked a hard drive with the auto slayer(just came out yesterday). We did that and i still couldn't get the regular dashboard to work. We  messed up the two dashboards and now NEITHER of them will come up on the TV screen. With and without the modchip on neither of them will work. Our hard drive is locked also. IS there ANY way that we would be able to unlock the hard drive. or possibly load up the xbox by the cdrom and use the slayer to completely reformate the harddrive so we can start over?

**CONFIRMED WORKING**

Locks and unlocks easily with EvolutionX dashboard and Config Magic.

Running on Xbox 1.1 with Xecuter 2.2 Lite Plus modchip installed and flashed w/ EvolutionX M7 EjectFix BIOS patched for LBA48 - all space allocated to F: (~243GB).  The drive is pretty quiet, even with the cover removed from the Xbox.

System works fine with Xbox Live when drive is locked, modchip is disabled, and booted to standard Xbox dashboard.

THe 12v locks it at 100%, no matter what, but does not require a hacked bios

But you'd need a hacked BIOS to use the HDD, so not much point in physical modding, really.

OK now I'm getting miffed.  I have read several reports that the Maxtor 6Y080L0 80Gig drive is lockable yet I am unable to lock mine.   I have tried it in 2 different v1.0 boxes with ConfigMagic Final and always get the message of "Locking Not Supported" .   I am also still using the stock IDE cable. Could this be the problem?  Do I need to swap out to an ATA133 cable to get this drive to lock?   Has anyone that locked this drive done so with the stock cable?    Could it possibly be an issue with v1.0 boxes or the Bios? I'm running X2 4977  on both boxes.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Western Digital WD1200JB [special edition] 120 GB hd. 8mb cache, 7200 rpm. LOCKED with no problems. i think the only reason anyone had trouble with it is they didnt do it with config magic final. my cuzin bought this same on in MI and his locked perfect to. with a v1.0 xbox. i did with v1.1 and his bro did it with v1.2. so i say its completley lockable.

Hey guys, I'm kind of a newbie and just want to clear things up...

I'm interested to change my HDD and I'm doing a little search...
I've read a tutorial on how to change the HDD using evo-x. It didn't say to use some kind of program to lock the drive. Can anyone tell me when do u lock the drive and how(that depends on which HDD you have choosen?), using that method?

And something else: with your experience, how many GB do u recommend on the new HDD? I think about 120GB(not to get in trouble dividing in 2 partitions), but I'm giving it a second though for a larger one...

To lock the drive, you use a program called Config Magic Final, which comes on the slayers disk, downloadable from 'the usual places'.

Just rea dthe tutorials at http://tutorials.xbox-scene.com for details on swapping hard drives. Just make sure you pick a lockable HD if you ever wanna use Live.

What does ConfigMagic say the model# is for that drive?  Just out of curiosity.

Maxtor (OEM drive from Target-Sale mail-order $300) model 4A320JB  320GB 5400 rpm LOCKING NOT SUPPORTED according to config magic.  Slayers 2.5 & X2-4977.06 bios.   Since I don't care about LIVE I'm not going to risk killing my drive trying some more ways of locking it and I think the answer would be the same anyway.   296GB usable on F  biggrin.gif
Been running a week now with 85 games and lots of room to spare.
