Title: How-to: Web Browsing On Xbox 360
Post by: SilentWatcher on November 28, 2005, 05:33:00 PM
My quick tutorial on browsing the web/running programs on your 360. no mouse though (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

CODE

Running Programs and Web Browsing From Xbox 360
by The Watcher (Silent.Watcher at gmail.com)

Through its Media Center Extender fucntionality, the Xbox 360 acts as dumb terminal to your Windows Media Center 2005 PC.

Aside from streaming video, it can also run additional programs and plugins, found in the "More Programs" heading on the Media Center main menu. Note that none of these programs are running directly on the Xbox- they are all running in some form on your PC. However, we can exploit this feature to run additional software(like web browsing) on the Xbox 360. Currently, there is no way to have mouse support using the 360 controller or media remote- however, the controller can be used as a keyboard.

To add an entry to the "More Programs" listing that will show up in Media Center on your Xbox:

1. Go to the directory C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Media Center\Media Center Programs
2. Create a new text file with the name of the program you want to run(For example Browser.txt)
3. Put the following line in your file:

If you want to do web browsing on your Xbox 360, you can simply enter a URL. To open a program, enter its exact path. For example:

4. Change your file's extension from .txt to .mcl .

In Media Center on your 360, go to More Programs and select the file you just made.

Enjoy web browsing on your 360! Or try to see what other programs from your PC it will run.

Am I the only one that actualy tried this?  When I go to More Programs after I've done this, I don't have any new item.  I can check or uncheck them in the settings, but i'm not able to launch any of the ones that I added...

yes ive tried it, i used vlc to maybe try and stream apps, but as stated there is no mouse support, so i couldnt run anything...although when i did try to run it, a message popped up with your usual "this program may not be safe to run, are you sure you want to run it?" and i noticed that i could navigate using the d-pad and the left thumbstick and it would highlight like you would using a keyboard and the tab function and i was able to tell it to run...but then after that i couldnt highlight anything else...

well it definetly works, too bad theres no cursor of any sort.  Tried logging in to listen to my streaming radio from sirius.  Got an error that it wasn't designed for remote control interaction.  Is there special tags that will allow a cursor to be used with the remote?  Screenshot below:

The SDK page on extenders. Maybe someone can get something out of that? Well, probably not, since it doesn't really say much. You could look at the rest of the sdk though.
BTW, what's the deal with saying MS?

Got this running perfectly first try,via VMWare, and was reading xbox-scene on my 360 lst night..  What I'm wondering is though, is there a way to fill the screen with the webpage?  or is there at least a way to code a page that will fill the whole screen rather than just center column..

In the pictures on page 1 it looks like google's home page  fills the screen, the google results dont' fill the screen though.. Let me know if you know how to fill the screen with the page..

Do you every think M$ will make a browser without WMC being involved?  It would be a pretty nice feature. A little worthless but cool.

Yeah I checked that out, you still need Media center.

I really do not get all this requirement to have Media Center Edition installed. Makes no sense to me. Typical MS. They do something and more times than not, it ends up being crippled by requiring some other element you may not have, really need, or want.

There is no valid reason why the 360 shouldn't be able to use XP (or any system for that matter) to draw data from.

I suspect we'd end up needing someone to write some sort of MCE emulator layer to fake the 360 into thinking it's talking with MCE but is really talking with any other OS.

Think about it. Why should the 360 care where the data is coming from as long as it's formatted correctly?

Forcing us all to run Media Center Edition when we have no interest in using our PC for recording TV and such makes little sense to me.

Then there's the whole Vista question. Is the 360 really going to be less functional under Vista or is Vista going to essentially include MCE-like hooks. If so, then clearly MCE is not, at the core, truly required. It sounds like it's just a current limitation just begging for someone to figure out a way around.

I'm told that music streamed from a MCE system includes things like album art and the like. We had all that with XMC streaming from any source on the older Xbox. God this annoys me.

Right on. x360 crippled media capabilities are a big joke.

Im sure people have thought of using this as a hole, but has anyone tried putting in one of those explorer boxes that shows the contents of ur C: or something? I remember seeing one on a website trying to convince me that my computer was vulnerable.

If we got one of those going we could see files on the various drives of the 360, unless it only showed the PC drives as the 360 is just a terminal.

Anyway, just an idea

!!!!  Working Browser on XBOX360  !!!!!

In doing research to write an app that allows web browsing I found someone who already done it.

It is called MCE Browser.  The software is freely given by the developer.

http://www.anpark.com/software.aspx

It take a little getting used to but it works!

It comes with a favorites list which I imagine is customizable...I will look into it later.

You CAN "tab" between links with the remote (I used the one that is puchased seperately with the keypad. I will try the media one later.)

Basically, you start at a site.  Push the down arrow to select the site.  Click "ok" to lock the site.  Now you can scroll the page with arrows or tab links with the ch/pg button.  Hit enter to follow the link.

To unlock the site hit "back" once, then you can use the location (favorites), back, forward, stop, zoom, etc.

Look like its built with js, vbs, and ocx.

Can't wait to see what I can learn...

NOTE: I did NOT make it. I just found it so please give credit where credit is due.

Enjoy.   pop.gif

What we really need is some way to be able to use a USB keyboard while in the Media Center on the 360.
