Title: Gentoo-xenon-minimal-2006.1 Livecd
Post by: Cpas on March 29, 2007, 04:26:00 PM
Hi,

I have tweaked a little the official "install-ppc64-minimal-2006.1.iso" gentoo iso so it work on the 360. This livecd is a minimal one, no x-server and you still need a serial adapter (could change soon since it use the readcd binary from felix, if someone manage to put this in a modded shader). I'm still working on some more cool stuff actually.

The ftp where the file is hosted allow 50 users so if you can make some mirrors ..
You will find more info on the free60.org website.

ftp://linux360:[email protected]/
http://www.free60.org/

Here is the readme :
CODE

gentoo-xenon-minimal-2006.1
***************************

This is a liveCD for Linux on the Xbox 360. It is based on the official gentoo
minimal installer named install-ppc64-minimal-2006.1.iso with a few changes to
boot on the Xbox 360 (codename xenon).
Currently, Samsung drives aren't supported, but it will work if you can load the
enable0800 ISO just before loading the cdreader binary via serial.

How does it work ?
==================
Burn gentoo-xenon-minimal-2006.1.iso.
Upload the cdreader binary via serial, this will open the xbox dvd drive.
Put the gentoo-xenon-minimal-2006.1 CD in the drive.
cdreader will automatically start the xell bootloader located at lba 0x20 on
this cd and boot the Linux Kernel.

Where to find more info on Linux for Xbox 360 :
===============================================
http://www.free60.org/
Free60 is a project towards porting GNU/Linux, BSD, Darwin and related
open-source operating systems to the Microsoft Xbox 360 video game console.

Thanks to :
===========
- Felix alias tmbinc, coded the cdreader binary and xell bootloader, without him,
  nothing would be possible.
- Stonersmurf, did the ISO mastering and gave his help and support on a lot of
  things, many thanks to him.
- The free60.org team.

Cheers,
Cpasjuste.

seem to have discovered a few small things worth noting

i am connected via serial

i am using the original (crwl360) patched kk disc

dvd drive is flashed w/ 5.2 xtreme

when i receive the "xe" prompt i insert the enable0800.iso cd...the drive goes in to mode b...makes the ticking noise

i send the readcd.bin file...it sends ok..but the code is not executed

i have to send the original (crwl360) hello.bin file and then the readcd code is exectuded

the kernel loads and then hangs @ the second ata1 line...is it looking for a hdd? (duh..i just thought of that..guess ill connect a sata drive)

CODE

Are you sure that that isn't just for hacking the beast via serial?  This new exploit's nfo mentions nothing about different drives.  It simply says (paraphrase) burn it, it ejects, stick in the live cd.

first of all nice work to all involved (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I have patched the game and burnt the gentoo live cd, everything seems to work great, you can see the penguins on the top of the screen and linux loading up then when it seems like its done it says thank you for using Gentoo Linux and does nothing else. If i leav it like that after 5 mins or more the screen goes black....

Am I missing something????

I'm have the EXACT same problem. The only difference is that I inserted the enable-0800 disc before kingkong.

Edit: And I have A orginal HDD connected. I've also tried sending xell directly, but the result is same. Next thing would be to unconnect the dvd after xell is loaded and use tftp.

I guess the Samsung User should, for now - for Linux, flash back to Xtreme 3.3.
That should work then, shouldn't it?

Of course that would mean that they should perhaps better stay away from XBOX
live. But hey, they want to keep their kernel version, so they can't play live any-
way...
Title: Gentoo-xenon-minimal-2006.1 Livecd
Post by: tmbinc on March 30, 2007, 09:50:00 AM
the issue when the readcd code doesn't execute is that it probably misses the 16 'x' at the end - the hello.bin has  them. so just add xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx to your readcd.bin (be sure to edit as binary, of course), and it should work.

Reprogrammed with willem programmer back to xtreme 1, xtreme 2 and the latest without the need for a enable800 disc but sadly i just get a black screen.

Did i f**k up or is this normal ?

What needs to be altered to bring the samsung the state it can read the Livecd ?

Where did you get a blackscreen ?
Can you load games with the xtrem 1 or 2 (to be sure that the flash is correct) ?

Ps : Like tmbinc said, i forget to include the X at the end of the readcd binary :x, so "echo "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" >> ./readcd.bin" should make the work.

I dont actually get to boot in to gentoo, it goes all through the process of loading up with all the ok's to the right of the screen but it dont load up a desktop or anything. I just get the writting at the bottom saying if you have any problems using gentoo then report it the exact same way or something to that effect, then at the very bottom it says thank you for using gentoo..

I still have the penguins at the top of the screen. It then sits there then after 5-10 mins not actually timed it to be honest then the screen goes black....

Not sure why i dont seem to be able to fully boot it unless im totally missing something.

I thought i would at least have a desktop lol.....

this did not work either

it still hangs in the same spot

it might be worth mentioning that i only leave the enable0800 cd in just until i hear the mode b "ticking" then i send the xell_rom.bin (from your site cpas wink.gif ) and insert the gentoo cd @ the same time

if i leave the 0800 cd in for too long the system crashes and the xell loader isnt executed of course

will you please post or pm me the link to the xell loader w/ the delay for the enable0800? you posted it for warp on xboxhacker but neither one of my home computers will connect to the site ?

edit: i got it to work smile.gif but will you still please send me the delayed xell? the time it takes the drive to go in to mode b is about the exact same time the box takes to crash

I was asking to XBHpringle but anyway (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

You have not read a lot, there is no desktop on the minimal live cd. When you get the message its done loading (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
I think you are using a compenant cable, and we forget to say that there is no fullscreen with component output so some part of the screen are missing. If you have a vga cable use it you will see the command prompt.

@k0mpresd, sorry but you do it the right way, its my mistake someone said me that it was working but this person must have forgot to say that it hang. I think for now we need to wait XBHpringle answer to see how it goes with a firmware that dont have the firmguard, or wait c4eva to make a compatible firmware.

Ok, I haven't seen this covered anywhere... do you need a HDD for this?  I just picked up a pre-own 360 today, had one of the old kernels (2xxx) and a Hitachi DVD drive.  No HDD was included, I figure it will be easy enough to get one once the 120's hit.  Have updated it to the correct kernel for the exploit but still need to get in there and flash the DVD for media checks.

Confiming both xtreme 1 and 2 not working..
i just rushed trough the thread... i posted this in the kingkong exploit thread :

QUOTE
I'm looking intoo it....

i'm thinking about making a hardware switch for 2 different flashes,

flash nr.1 with a xtreme firmware to load the KK disc

flash nr.2 with a 0800 firmware to load the Livecd

In other words... removing a part from the xtreme firmware and switching to nr.2 just before the tray is popped to load the Livecd.

Who knows maybe it works

Or.. using two drives and use a simple SATA switch to switch between te xtreme and 0800 drive.

OOO fun things to do
Will post results this afternoon or night.. i'm kinda fckd from some btch aching my head

Hi ive been loking at the samsung dvd drive problem and think i have came up with a solution.

put a 0800 enable disc and live cd on 1 disc.  biggrin.gif

the drive reads a certain sector and if that sector has a certain code it turns to 0800 mode.  blink.gif

why not just make the live cd and patch it so it is also an unlock disc.

(hope the sectors dont cross)  ohmy.gif

Do you think it is possible???

Kernal: 4532
ODD: Hitachi 47dj + xtreme 2.2

Works perfect. Really interesting stuff. I got the linux kernal to boot with the modified king kong iso + shader.bin. And from what i'm reading above this minimal version does include a GUI. I'm not good with linux but I just plugged in my USB keyboard and tried punching in commands but just kept getting bad command. Keyboard works perfect! The screenshots of Linux of the 360 are displaying it with the GUI so is there any way I could add it to the live cd?

Congrats and kudos to all the people that made the "impossible" torch.gif "possible"

or even if someone adds a wait period to the shader file.
so the code delays for say 30 secs befor loading from the disc

I cant edit my posts??? wonder why

send the modded xell loader via serial

it has a delay because it waits for an input from the user to select tftp or cd

It works flawless. My only question is I don't have an HD TV any reason why (or way to fix) it's almost like the desktop is too big for my tv and i can't see the sides/top/bottom. I'm assuming it's just this or VGA? Anyone have this problem and/or a fix for this?

Yes, you need a HDTV or a monitor.

Yeah, as burgerbee was pointing out, I think most of us are running Ubuntu now instead, at least I am. Running it off the HDD beats a Live disc any day  smile.gif

Also the minimal doesn't have a desktop and requires a serial port to use, so a lil dated now that we can do it all from disc.

I only want to backup the CPU key, ect..., what I am looking for in a "minimal" linux is no need for keyboard, ect, just load kk exploit, put in linux disc, linux is loaded and gets all the keys, dumps, ect and puts them on either the HD or a USB keydrive without any user interface via keyboard or any nonsense. Is there anything close to this?
