Title: 7.1 On 360?
Post by: JMan8108 on June 13, 2005, 09:31:00 PM
I luv my 7.1 setup sooo much but the back two channels barley ever get to pump there cones for a nice workout. Since the 360 is all geared twards HD and the newest technology, my question is sometime will the 360 go 7.1 compatible? Halo 2 was amazing on 5.1 alone, I just cant imagine something on the same level with full 7.1 and some nice 1080. Just my lil hope and 2 cents worth

BTW- got my 360 all reserved up today smile.gif

in one of the m$ 360 videos i saw they said all games will support at least 5.1 so that leaves the door open to some games being in 7.1 i am sure at least some games will support it if not all smile.gif

The Nintendo Revolution will supposedly support 7.1, but no HD  blink.gif

Somehow doesn't seem to make sense.

All Xbox 360 games must be in 5.1: Standard...

It could be higher..

I assume that the Revolution will support 7.1 through Pro Logic IIx seeing as a few games on the Gamecube, well at least one does support it.  I am very impressed with some games on the Gamecube using Pro Logic II.  I too would think that some games on the 360 will support 7.1, but I personally prefer 6.1 over 7.1 seeing as you have a direct rear speaker.  It sounds better to me anyways.  We will just have to wait until 8.1 comes out and that will trump both 6.1 and 7.1 seeing as that takes both the advantage of 6.1 and 7.1.

*general ?*

does 7.1 add that much over 5.1?

i mean, i can see it making a little difference, but if you already own a damn good 5.1 setup would it make that much of a difference if you got a 7.1? (and do they make them with wireless speakers, after the one we just got, i dont think ill ever want to run the wire's again)

In my OXM (Official XBOX Magazine) Jay Allard said that some games will support 7.1 with 5.1 as standard.

Yes, but sadly there's no true 7.1 out right now. Pro logic and Neo just simulate it from a a non 7.1 source. The highest right now is 6.1 with DTS:ES Discrete. This is a true 7 channel system, all with their own sound being generated for each speaker.

Dolby Digital EX is just simulated 6.1 like Prologic IIx and Neo. It takes information from the 2 surrounds, and picks pieces from each to put into the back speaker.

The PS2 should definently offer higher then 6.1 because of it having HDDVD, which will have audio sources that are higher then 6.1 discrete.

I think this is more of a question of if the devs want to spend the extra time to implement this or not.

I can't imagine there is much difference in the programing between 5.1, 6.1 and 7.1

If I had to venture a guess it would be more along the lines of developers not seeing any added profit from the extra cost in licensing fees for the Dolby and/or DTS 6.1/7.1 formats

I would kill for DTS support on the 360.  I don't feel the need for a second rear channel just yet, but just to have 6.1 support would be great.

Here's a quote from the Jeff Henshaw interview http://www.winsupers...x360_inside.asp

"Hi-def to us means more than just the graphics resolutions we've been talking about though. It also means how people hear the game. On Xbox 360, every single game will support Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound at a minimum. Many games will go higher than that, will use 1080i graphics and 7.1 channel surround sound. But 720p and 5.1 channel surround sound are the minimal hi-def visual and audio aspects of Xbox 360. So hi-def is really that first key pillar for us."

There's your answer folks  smile.gif

that's a good interview, lots of new info in there  beerchug.gif

Now the only question is which Standards of 7.1 will they be including...

considering DTS :Neo6 is based on advanced analog stereo signal I imagine any developer could support that if they desired regardless of what MS offered...

Also considering they requiring support of DD 5.1 the 6.1/7.1 DD standard is probably also supported.

Heck I wouldn't be surprised if they supported everything... and I hope they do.

5.1 is plenty good and thats quickly becoming the standard.  not everyone has 5.1 now and i don't think a lot of ppl will go with 7.1 anyway cuz of the amount of equitment already avalible for 5.1 systems.  even if it did suport 7.1 most of us would just be like   damn that cool   and play games in 2,2.1, or 5.1 anyway.

I wish games would support DTS-ES!  Man-o-Man would that rule.  I can't believe Digital Theatre Systems isn't interested in licensing to console games.  I don't know what it is about DTS that makes DD seem ... impotent, but the sound is so much richer.  I suppose the real reason is disc space.  If there is a DD track and a DTS track, that leaves no space for anything else.  Unless we get HD-DVD....

The Xbox has the capability to realtime encode DD 5.1. For example a 2 channel MP3 played in XBMC will be encoded by the southbridge into Dolby Digital 5.1 in realtime smile.gif . This is at a bit rate of 384/448kbs. DTS is around 768kb/s. There would not be nearly enough bandwidth to realtime encode DTS just yet...maybe xbox360 will be able but doubt the DTS guys would be interested.
I really hope Xbox360 supports realtime DD5.1 like the xbox. This is one hell of a feature if you have a DD5.1 capable reciever.
