Title: [freeboot] Xbr -> Freeboot Without Your 5xxx/6xxx/7xxx Full Dump
Post by: Pacotera on April 19, 2010, 12:22:00 AM
Ok so after lots and lots of users asking about installing freeboot without a full dump (for those who bought a x360 with XBR already installed or simple lost the backup) and no answers i tried and got success.

This is what i did (and you should do but remember you need the files from the SAME MOTHERBOARD as your x360!)

I have a Jasper 16mb with XBR installed:

- First i booted into xell/xellous (with eject) and copied my CPU KEY

- Executed flash360 with a pendrive connected and made a full backup of my XBR3 nand

- Using 360 Flash tool already configured with my own CPU KEY and 1BL key (google for 1BL key) open the image.

- Extract SMC and Keyvault (just click on the extract button and select those)

- You will get 4 files. Rename KV_dec.bin to KV.bin and SMC_dec.bin to SMC.bin.

- Copy those files to the freeboot folder "DATA"

- Following freeboot's readme copy all files from 9199.zip to "DATA" folder aswell

- Now you will need the files below from a donor nand. Thanks to Skevus for his files (extracted from his jasper 16mb 7xxx backup).

      - crl.bin
      - crl.bin.meta
      - extended.bin
      - extended.bin.meta
      - odd.bin
      - odd.bin.meta
      - secdata.bin
      - secdata.bin.meta
      - smc_config.bin

- After that run the following command on cmd:

 ibuild.exe c freeBOOT -c [console] -d data\ -p [cpu key] -b [1BL key] bin\image.bin bin\fuses.bin

- A image.bin file will be created on "BIN" folder. Rename it to updflash.bin and copy to the root of your usb drive.

- Using flash360 flash the file to your x360 (i received a "not zeropaired image" error but ignored and all went fine)

- Thats it!

Please try and post back it it worked ok. I tested with 0.032 release of freeboot. If anything goes wrong you can always flash your XBR backup using LPT/USB

Remove the 1BL key. That is not allowed.

 Did your 360 ever work???

smc_config.bin is esential and very Consol specific....

P.S you get your smc_config.bin by extracting your original Dump with ibuild witch is included in FreeBoot 0.032...

ibuild gives a error message, when i try to run it with my 6712 image
(i used the command from the readme)

QUOTE
ERROR: Data in block 0, page 0, plane 0 is corrupted.
ERROR: Unhandled exception.

Uhm block 0,page 0... ? Is this the date ? Maybe i changed it and forgot to rechange, its 2004-2007.

Edit: changed back to -2008 and now i get

QUOTE
ERROR: Data in block 47, page 50, plane 0 is corrupted.
ERROR: Unhandled exception.

Well, i guess ill just rewrite it, solder r3t6 and update to 7371

Nah, I wouldnt reccomend trying this unless you have an lpt to reflash

I tried this and a few other methods that i figured out. It only works on 1 or 2 xboxes that i tried it on. The rest get christmas lights, rrod or e52 errors.

This is because the ldv values from the orig must match the freeboot image. Ive tried changing them via flashtool. Doesnt work.

Ive got a usb flasher, so dont worry.

I tried it a couple more times, but i either get E72,E79 or no vid at all with green lights.

Went back to xbr3 now... unfortunatly i only have 1 backup of my original nand left, which seems to be corrupted plus:
I dont feel like soldering to those spots right now.

It looks simple enough but I've got a few questions ;-)

I have a Jasper 512MB and my original NAND dump is 7363. It's currently runing XBR3. Ibuild extrakts all files from the original nand without any errors. I also used 360 flash tool 0.92 to extract KV.BIN and I'm planning to get SMC.BIN from the XBR3 image I flashed.

The KV_DEC.BIN (16384 bytes from 360 flash tool) and the KV.BIN (16368 bytes from ibuild) are the same EXCEPT for the first 16bytes which are missing from the KV.BIN that ibuild extrakted.

These are the file sizes I got from ibuild and the SMC BIN from 360 flash tool:
2,528       crl.bin
4             crl.bin.meta
16,368     extended.bin
4             extended.bin.meta
16,368     kv.bin
64           odd.bin
4             odd.bin.meta
1,024       secdata.bin
4             secdata.bin.meta
12,288     SMC.bin
131,072    smc_config.bin

Is this normal? Can I use the files that ibuild extracted and the smc_dec.bin from 360 flash tool?

TIA

This is my problem exactly, I followed the tut but can´t continue because ibuild won´t let me build the image with an oversized kv.bin. I tried removing 16 bytes of 00´s, but ibuild then crashes..? and it crashes when i remove the first 16 bytes too..

Running win7 x64

I was gettting the same error on my xenon, if you remove the first 16bytes from you kv.bin it should work.

If anyone has the files for a 256mb jasper can you send the to me as i have lost my orginal nand dump.

If anyone needs the files for the xenon i have uploaded them here...

"ibuild.exe c freeBOOT -c xenon -d data\ -p CPU -b 1BL bin\image.bin bin\fuses.bin"

Whats going on..?

Hehe, rookie mistake;) allthough it didn´t do the trick, I´m not getting an error anymore, but Ibuild just seem to work for a moment and then just goes back to, F:\freeboot..
Is there a sign of progress when it´s working correctly?
Since there´s no new image in /bin/ I´m quite sure something isn´t as it should.

I´ll keep at it. thanks.

EDIT: There´s something weird with my original dumps ( I do have them) because I just built a freeboot image from the backup I used as a donor, and that seems to hold up ok..
I have 5 dumps from this problematic box, running 3 of them through Nandcompare v1.2 reconstruct I get the message "All blocks were found matching in at least 2 nand images. Save reconstructed nand?" which results in "0 unrecoverable block(s) found." I remember doing that for my XBR image, and that worked out fine.
This seems a bit more picky though..

I did that. Once the first 16 byte have been removed correctly(!), the kv.bin's are identical and the image builds fine. However, I'm still unclear whether the smc_dec.bin from the xbreboot image can be used.

If the flashed image fails to boot, can I use Xellous to load linux and re-flash with a working image?

I used the smc_dec.bin renamed to smc.bin from my xbr image and it worked fine. If it does fail you can always use your lpt/usb to reflash your xbr image.

Would anybody happen to have the files for a Zephyr? I'd really appreciate it if they were uploaded somewhere. I got a donor NAND from my friend but it has bad blocks and I can't extract the files I need in 360 Flash Tool.

Also, is this method recommended? I see conflicting posts here and on other boards.

The above worked fine. I removed the first 16 bytes in the KV.BIN so both were identical then created and flashed the image. All working well. Thanks for the instructions!

IT WORKS!!!

I can hardly believe it! After giving my freeboot frustrations a rest I decided to try again and I had to delete the first 16 bytes from my KV.bin for ibuild to work. Used Flash360 and I was completely expecting to spend the next 45 min reflashing XBR through my LPT cable and swoosh, green lights.

This was on a Xenon with XBR3 bin, no orig.bin used. SMC_DEC and KV_DEC extracted right from XBR bin.

Follow exactly what first post says, delete 16 bytes from KV if ibuild complains, actually works!

Go to download.com and search for hex editor.
I downloaded a free one called HxD.

After you run HxD, open your KV.bin file you created and highligt the first row of code. Each row of code is 16bytes (32 hexadecimal characters grouped in 2s). Hit delete, it will warn you that the file size will change, then just save and exit.

Has anyone else noticed the image.bin file is all FF's for about the last 12%.

This time I'm using nandpro to flash another xenon and I've got error 300 from block 385 to the end, 3ff.

It seems to boot up anyway so I guess this is all normal. I wonder if next time I can just stop nandpro after Bl 385 and save some time?

the last part of the nand is called the spare area and it is there for bad blocks.

the last part of the nand is called the spare area and it is there for bad blocks. It should be 32 blocks long, so 84000 bytes, or from block 3df to 3ff.

Hey, can you clarify something. When you said he made a full backup, are you speaking of a full original backup from premod, or a full backup from xbr3?

I followed a guide instructing me to do the old only backup first 2 mb method, long short short I have a working xbr3, but ended up without a full original nand backup.

perhaps I am crazy, but it seems like peeps in #freeboot seem to think that there is no need for an orig at all, and that simply dumping the current xbr3 image with flash360 will do the trick ?

If you don't have your orig.bin and just have your xbr3.bin, you do also need the donor files from some other orig of same board version. You put the donor files in the ibuild data folder plus your two files extracted from your motherboards XBR...

one question about Smc_Config.bin, i made a Nandbackup with Flash360 and opened it with 360 Flash Dump Tool, i extracted the smc and kv, but there is no Smc_Config.bin inside the image, there is only a config.bin inside, is that the correct one and i just need to rename it? I have Donar files.

cHarOn

Update: Ok found it out already config.bin is not compatible, but if you extract your sbr nand backup with ifconfig then you will get the Smc_Config.bin file smile.gif

I just flashed my 360 with this tut thanks alot Pacotera. Here is the data folder for my falcon i used right before the final image.bin build in ibuild (should save a few falcon owners alot of time and don't need to update to 7371). Not including the smc.bin or kv.bin which you have to get from your xbr backup image anyway. Link for data folder. I want to also tell people that the default patches for free-boot are the Xbox1 compatibility not the trainers compatibility. And Pacotera didn't say but when i flashed with Flash360 i flashed it without keeping the config and kv from xbr (B button i think).

To clarify on my late night ramblings, I meant without any original dump or donor nands. Perhaps it contains donor nand files in the background and I don't know, but freeboot toolbox maker is magic smile.gif Fed it a key, and it build a new image for my box, no hassles, works great (aside from xvid)

Just a piece of advice - if you're using flash360 to write the new image and your existing XBR installation is working fine, remember to select the option to KEEP the KV and config of the existing install. You don't need to overwrite these if they're working and it reduces the risk of getting it wrong.

The second system gets a 3RR with secondary error code of 0022 when I try on a second xenon system I have. I have posted some screen shots of some bad blacks that the second system has that the first didn't. I didn't do any remapping because the guide doesn't say to.

fortunately I'm keeping my lpt cable hooked up until I get this figured out. I just reflash to my xellous/XBR3 flash every time it Red Rings.

update.

I've tried following the normal freeboot instructions using an orig.bin nand dump that I did when I first JTAG'd. I got the same error. I've tried easy freeboot and I've tried flashing with xellous too. All same results.
