Ballmer Talks Natal, Says Blu-ray Add-On for Xbox ComingPosted by XanTium | October 22 10:04 EST | News Category: Xbox360 |

From gizmodo.com:
In the first segment of our exclusive Steve Ballmer interview series, the Microsoft CEO and I talk about Natal, the blurring of console generations, and the surprising assertion that "you'll be able to get" Blu-ray add-on drives for Xbox 360.
When I asked Ballmer about adding Blu-ray to the Xbox, he said: "Well I don't know if we need to put Blu-ray in there--you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories."
Though he says it with certitude, the timing of any kind of Blu-ray accessory is unclear. Could he have mispoken? Certainly. However, when I asked Xbox spokespeople about Ballmer's revelation, they responded: "Our immediate solution for Blu-ray-quality video on an Xbox 360 is coming this fall with Zune Video and 1080p instant-on HD streaming. As far as our future plans are concerned, we're not ready to comment."

Can I have it ?
Seriously, though, if you PS3 is "collecting dust", then won't a blu-ray addon for the 360.... also "collect dust" (since you obviously aren't watching movies with your PS3)?

the 360 is too frekin loud for a br player and sucks too much Watt, Id rather buy a stand alone player for like 100-150 bucks than get an external br drive for the 360.
So now its kinda too f***in late for that br drive, they didnt want to bring it out when everyone wanted them, now the stand alone players are cheap enough for everyone to get one.
ms fucked up this one, they can kiss my ass now

It'd use a different drive, the HD-DVD add on wasn't loud at all.

You could argue that a Blu-ray drive for the 360 would double up as a BD drive for a PC.
That would be the main reason for me to get it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Hopefully they'll have sense & sell it quite cheap, maybe around £50 (seeing as it's only a ROM drive).
But seeing as this is Microsoft, i wouldn't expect to see this at retail for any less than £90.

Correct, the HD DVD Rom drive wasn't loud, but the 360 is quite loud for movies.
Heck, even the PS3 is loud when playing a movie on a DVD.

Mine was doing that, I busted it out this week, and its not to bad, just getting used to the controller sucks.
been playing resistance 2, killzone 2, and little big planet. I have like at least 7-8 games for ps3 and barely ever touch it.

I know what you mean - i've got LBP & Killzone 2 but just can't get into them - idk why.
+1, the controller sucks.
-
Meh, blu-ray.
Now Natal news is what I'm excited about. Breakout on natal is gonna be bad-ass.

Same here, but you gotta have it if you want to play the good games that are PS3 only. Killzone and resistance were awsome, so is unchartered 2

It's about frakkin time they decided to release a Blu-ray player. If this is true, I am extremely happy.

WAY too little too late. Almost everyone who is interested in BR have picked up a ps3 slim. If MS would have come out with this at or right before the ps3 slim, it would have severely hurt sony. Now it won't even make as big as dent as the HD-DVD addon. If MS would have simply broke this news before the ps3 slim launch, it would have made a big difference. But instead they stupidly denied it.

I'd stick with a stand-alone player. I don't believe the quality of a blu-ray addon would be that great. Is it even possible to transmit losless audio over a USB? As far as I know, it has to be done through HDMI. I was never able to get it over a coax or optical cable myself.

I would think so, especially considering that a lot of recording studio's DACs use an usb interface.
I wonder if the Blu-ray annoucement has anything to do with project natal? While I know M$ said they would never require/release an upgrade attachment for games, since project natal is coming out there may be a chance that there will be blu-ray versions of natal games?

It can be done if the 360 itself will decompress the data from the disc (and it will). A blu-ray has a transfer rate up to either 8 or 11MBps (I can't remember which). If it's 11MBps, that's a transfer of 88Mbps through USB. USB 2.0 has a max theoretical transfer rate of up to 480Mbps, way more than what is necessary for bluray.
To address what you said about HDMI and audio... Keep in mind, by the time the data reaches the HDMI cable it has been decompressed to it's full glory. Something that can reach up to a theoretical 10.2Gbps. Optical and Coaxial cannot handle lossless audio because it was designed that way. The transfer rate is way too low, and it simply cannot handle that kind of data. Again, not because of the physical equipment, but because of built in limitations from when Sony and Phillips created those Digital InterFaces.
Might have been a form of control, may have been a lack of foresight.
Edit: BTW, most studios use Firewire, although USB is catching up rapidly.

According to Major Nelson this whole thing is all a big misunderstanding and there are no plans for a 360 Blu-ray player.
QUOTE(Major Nelson @ Oct 22 2009, 03:02 PM)
We have no plans for Blu-Ray on Xbox 360
During an interview yesterday, Steve Ballmer was asked about Blu-Ray and the Xbox 360. I wanted to clear something up. Steve was referring to Blu-Ray accessories for the PC. As we have said in the past, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360. In fact, the future of home entertainment starts very soon when Xbox 360 becomes the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies. With a library of thousands of TV shows and movies to choose from, Xbox 360 owners can instantly watch the movies they want, when they want, in the highest form of high definition.
